The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the first three civil contracts for Circle Line 6 (CCL6) totalling S$1.75 billion. Works on these three contracts are expected to commence by the end of 2017 and complete by 2025.
The 4-kilometre CCL6 will have three stations, and will close the loop for the Circle Line (CCL) by connecting HarbourFront Station to Marina Bay Station. When the CCL6 stations of Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward are completed in 2025, the CCL will have a total of 33 stations, including 12 interchange stations with other MRT lines. It will also expand the rail network to areas such as Spottiswoode and the southern edge of our existing CBD.
With CCL6, commuters will enjoy a direct route between areas in the west like Pasir Panjang and Kent Ridge and key employment areas in the Central Business District, as well as upcoming developments in the Marina Bay area. Commuters travelling from areas like Paya Lebar and Mountbatten will also enjoy faster access to the retail and office centres in the HarbourFront area.
As an orbital line, CCL enhances overall connectivity and capacity, and strengthens the resilience of the MRT network by connecting the existing radial lines and creating multiple routes between stations. For example, a commuter travelling from Jurong East to Marina Bay will have the alternate option of transferring to the Circle Line at Buona Vista Station.
To cater to future needs, Kim Chuan Depot will be expanded to almost double its capacity from 70 to 133 trains. The integrated depot will also house 550 buses, which will allow us to optimise land use. The expansion of the depot will be completed at about the same time as CCL6 in 2025.
In addition to greater convenience for commuters with seamless transfers between the new air-conditioned bus interchange and the Bukit Panjang MRT and LRT stations, commuters using the new Bukit Panjang ITH can expect new features to enhance their overall journey experience. The new ITH will also feature several technological innovations to improve workplace safety, for example, a traffic management system to detect and increase bus captains’ visual awareness of bus movements within the bus parking area.
The Bukit Panjang ITH is the first integrated transport hub operated by SMRT Buses, who has invested significantly to ensure a positive travelling experience for commuters using the new ITH.
The Bukit Panjang ITH will take on a different look and feel, with its design and function planned around three key themes: Commuter Centricity, Workforce Oriented and Community Bonding. Please refer to the Annex for a summary of new features at Bukit Panjang ITH.
One of the few features unique to this hub is that commuters can soon borrow items such as portable USB charger, shopping trolley and an umbrella when they travel through the Bukit Panjang ITH. To borrow the items, commuters need to go to the WeCare Shop located near the bus interchange at the ground level of the connected Hillion Mall, also to provide an identity card (to be scanned) and a contact number. They may keep the items for up to three days, after which SMRT employees will contact them to return the things.
The Bukit Panjang ITH is fully equipped with barrier-free facilities which makes it convenient to take public transport, especially for commuters with mobility issues as well as commuters travelling with young children and prams. For example, graduated kerb edges are installed at all boarding berths to facilitate boarding and alighting of buses by passengers in wheelchairs. Bus berths and lifts have also been braille-equipped for the visually impaired.
Priority queues and accompanying seats will also be demarcated for seniors, less mobile and expectant mothers to rest and wait at, so that they can be accorded priority boarding for their buses.
All new and upcoming ITHs and Bus Interchanges developed from 2014 are also designed with standalone nursing rooms which comes with diaper changing amenities and a wash basin.
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officially opened The Island Defence Training Institute, a new training institute at Clementi Camp on 31st July where up to 18,000 active soldiers and national servicemen (NSmen) will be trained in counter-terrorism and homeland security.
A further 15,000 personnel every year will undergo training for other island defence roles.
The training will focus on further developing individual skill sets acquired from the SAF's current urban operations training, and adapting them to homeland security operations. The training will cover: (i) scenario-based simulation and live-firing for homeland security operations; (ii) search and arrest procedures to be undertaken by SAF personnel; (iii) knowledge of legal powers and rights of private defence; and (iv) retractable truncheon drills. NS units will undergo refresher training during their In-Camp Training (ICT) so that their skills are kept current and they can be readily deployed for operations.
To ensure that training is realistic and effective, the IDTI will leverage training technology such as Judgmental Video Simulation Training at the Infantry Gunnery and Tactical Simulator, which has been updated to include multiple homeland security operations scenarios. Conducted in 50m ranges, this training puts soldiers through simulated homeland security operations scenarios, and exercises their ability to decide to shoot or not depending on whether the target is friend or foe. This increases operational readiness by allowing soldiers to exercise their thinking and decision-making processes in a highly immersive environment, and better prepares them to manage complex homeland security operations.
Coca-Cola which has a global portfolio comprising more than 500 brands, unveiled a new S$79 million storage and distribution centre in Tuas on 19th July.
The 6,000-sqm facility, is located right across the road from Coca-Cola’s concentrate plant, and is designed to drive efficiency and support the company’s growing business in Asia Pacific.
Coca-Cola’s concentrate plant and distribution centre in Tuas are both operated by Pacific Refreshments Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Coca-Cola Company. Together, they will produce and distribute more than 200 different concentrates for brands such as Coca-Cola, Fanta, Schweppes, Heaven & Earth, Sprite, Pwerade and Minute Maid.
The Downtown Line 3 (DTL3) will open on 21 October 2017, making it the longest underground and driverless MRT line in Singapore, surpassing the 35.7km Circle Line (CCL). The completed DTL which will be 42km long will facilitate direct travel from the north-western and eastern areas of the island to the Central Business District (CBD) and Marina Bay areas, providing greater connectivity to residential, industrial and lifestyle enclaves.
DTL1 with six stations from Chinatown to Bugis opened on 22 December 2013 and DTL2 with 12 stations from Bukit Panjang to Rochor opened on 27 December 2015. The DTL3 Extension from Expo to Sungei Bedok, an additional 2.2km, will open in 2024.
The 21-kilometre long DTL3 comprises 16 stations and is the longest stretch of the Downtown Line to be opened. DTL3 includes three interchange stations at MacPherson, Tampines, and Expo. The MacPherson interchange station links DTL3 to the CCL, while the latter two stations connect the line to the East-West Line (EWL), providing commuters greater accessibility to the rest of the island and significantly shortening their travelling time. There are eight Civil Defence shelters on DTL3, namely Geylang Bahru, Bedok North, Bedok Reservoir, Tampines West, Tampines, Tampines East, Upper Changi and Expo.
The first 10 stations from Fort Canning to Bedok North have achieved their Temporary Occupation Permit status while final fitting out works are currently in progress at the last six stations.
A&W – which stands for “Allen and Wright” has confirmed to local press on Tuesday (4 July) that the company is on track to expand in Southeast Asia, including in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
According to the company's CEO, Kevin Bazner, A&W has already built an office in Singapore in 2016 to prepare for Its expansion and is currently looking for “real estate for a flagship company restaurant in Singapore”.

Going car-lite in the Jurong Lake District (JLD), Singapore’s second Central Business District, is now easier with the completion of a 15km dedicated cycling path network.
JLD is the 8th intra-town cycling path network in Singapore. This is part of the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) long term plan to progressively construct dedicated cycling path networks in all HDB towns to enhance first and last mile connections.
With the new cycling path network, residents can cycle more safely and seamlessly from their homes to public transport nodes or their offices in the vicinity. The cycling path network will also enable families and groups of cyclists to explore the scenic Jurong Lake Gardens all the way to Taman Jurong via the existing park connector.
By end 2020, the JLD cycling path network will also be integrated with the neighbouring Taman Jurong estate, which will have its own cycling path network.
To complement the cycling path network, LTA has been increasing bicycle parking facilities in JLD. The bicycle parking capacity at Chinese Garden and Lakeside MRT stations has been ramped up by close to 50 per cent since 2014, bringing the total capacity at both stations to more than 600 lots. LTA will continue to monitor the demand of bicycle parking in Jurong, and look at enhancing the provision of parking facilities at various locations such as the major transport nodes.
Following JR Vending's well-received Chef-In-Box VendCafe pilot project (jointly facilitated by Spring Singapore and the Housing Board) at Anchovale Drive, you can now find their new branch at Ang Mo Kio MRT station.
VendCafe's concept is about a cluster of vending machines which dispense hot meals around the clock.
A 3rd VendCafe will follow very soon this month and it is located at Lakeside MRT station. Both the Ang Mo Kio and Lakeside VendCafes will open from 7am to 11pm daily.
Ang Mo Kio MRT station's VendCafe has over 90 food and beverage options for any hungry or curious people. The ready-to-be-dispensed meals are cooked and packaged daily at a central kitchen, and will be replenished twice a day by an on-site staff member.
