Timber Actually has a new store at The Grandstand which supplies wood – mostly from Singapore trees - to residents and wood enthusiasts in Singapore. Yes, you read that right!
Their customers are hobbyists, DIY-ers, wood workers, wood enthusiasts, homeowners, restaurants, cafes and many more. What all of them have in common is that they want to be part of the whole ecosystem: processing and using as much as they possibly can from local trees.
You will have noticed that there are loads of trees here in Singapore. What you probably do not realize is that along Singapore's roads are many trees (including African Mahogany) that are sourced to make premium furniture-grade wood. Local trees are often felled to make way for urban development as well as to keep us safe where they pose a risk to the community. Timber Actually is licenced to gather these fallen logs and bring them to their yard for processing.
Logs are first cut into regular plank sizes and then dried out within Timber Actually's in-house kiln in order to reduce the moisture content of the wood. Kiln drying is a standard practice in wood production mills and serves to efficiently bring the green lumber moisture levels down to "workable" levels. Excess moisture in the wood can cause major issues including warping and twisting.
Once the wood is dried, Timber Actually it can be customized into bespoke pieces for carpenters, DIY-ers, home-based woodworkers and homeowners.
The logs are put through several processes before they are ready to be transformed. The logs will be cut to regular plank sizes. After which, they will be subjected to drying inside Timber Actually's in-house kiln. This is to reduce the moisture content of the wood. Kiln drying is a standard practice in wood production mills and serves to efficiently bring the green lumber moisture levels down to "workable" moisture content levels that will not end in the myriad of problems that can be caused by excess moisture in the wood. These problems include warping and twisting.
With the wood now dried, they are ready for you. Whether you are a carpenter, DIY-er, home-based woodworker, or homeowner, Timber Actually is around to assist.
