In commitment to its new direction of using scents to heal, soothe and delight one’s mental wellness, homegrown fragrance brand, SIX, has launched a multi-sensorial boutique at 313@Somerset. Designed by local artists Clara Yee and Gerald Leow from In The Wild, the boutique is a representation of Founder, Jason Lee’s vision of creating a sanctuary for customers to take a break from their busy lives.
Covering a space of 550 square feet, the boutique is designed to enhance the customer’s journey through visual, audio and olfactory stimuli. The allure starts from the exterior façade of the boutique enhanced with SIX’s signature ambient scent to pique the interest of passers-by. As they step into the space, elements of the interiors emanate a gentle calming vibe, complemented with a curation of spa- esque music to lull them into a state of bliss. “We invite our guests to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy mall into our sanctuary; to take a breather, unwind and just be – in the moment,” says Jason.
Likening the interiors to that of a cave, Clara Yee, lead designer and Co-Founder of In The Wild, explains the design inspiration: “The space references the contours of a cave through a variety of textures and an earthy calming palette of natural materials. The ideas of wellness and care are displayed with the stucco walls of sandstone pink, pistachio greens and soft, rounded edges. The new SIX boutique is designed to be an intimate respite to soothe the senses.”
Zoned into areas of ‘consciousness’ and ‘memories’, the space is a hybrid of retail and homelike hosting experience, with art objects to discover throughout. Like a personal collection, each item within the space, from the textiles to the floating forms are like responses to memories and reflection. “To achieve harmony and bring positivity into our lives, we sometimes need to tap into our deeper senses. The artworks loosely reference Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, inviting us to be free from relying on just our five senses,” Clara expounds. The accomplished young designer and entrepreneur made waves when she was recognised by Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2016. Clara was also the artistic designer behind Singapore Tourism Board’s Singapore: Inside Out, an international multi-disciplinary showcase of Singaporean talents in the fields of design, music, literature, food and performing arts.
Since its inception in July 2016, SIX has been making strides within the scenting industry with an expanding collection of fine fragrances, DIY scent kits, and a home scenting range. From a humble collection of three scents (123 Tribeca, 1724 Puka and 27 ÌŠF Biei), SIX now boasts two product lines. They include the SIX home scenting collection of diffusers, nebulizers and pure essential oils, two additional scents (Eclat and 2065 UJONG), as well as a DIY scent kit.
On the commercial end, SIX has been undertaking ambient scenting, creating bespoke labels and conducting scenting workshops for luxury brand names such as Piaget, Lexus and Ritz Carlton. In 2019, SIX established its first standalone boutique at the newly revamped Funan Mall and was commissioned for its ambient scenting. The same year, the SIX product line was included in Singapore Airline’s Kris Shop catalogue. SIX was also commissioned by our national carrier to create a bespoke scent that was used on perfume tags boxed inside purchases. Later that year, SIX collaborated with Eu Yan Sang to create the world’s first Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perfume, using traditional herbs.
In 2020, SIX launched its second standalone boutique at Bugis Junction. In view of the work-from-home phenomenon following the Covid-19 outbreak, SIX created the uplifting, Awakening home diffusers, where ten percent of sales proceeds were donated to the Courage Fund by Community Chest. SIX also launched a new line of essential oils and disinfectant sprays. In November 2020, SIX partnered with the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH) to raise awareness on mental health issues, with the creation of the Hikaru collection. Ten dollars from each product sold, with a total targeted amount of S$10,000, will be donated to the association in support of its ongoing efforts to help individuals with mental health issues.

An establishment steeped in culinary history, the 1-Group introduces Zorba, The Greek Taverna – a unique Greek experience that brings authentic dishes with age-old traditions from the azure Mediterranean Sea to sunny Singapore. Sitting along the waterfront of the Singapore River in Clarke Quay, Zorba aims to transport guests to a Greek isle with nourishing simplicity set along the picturesque riverbank.
Taking pride in their culinary traditions, Zorba presents a selection of crowd-pleasing dishes from appetisers, pristine seafood and meats, and tempting desserts. Rooted in Greek heritage and culture, Zorba sources its traditional ingredients direct from Greek suppliers.
A signature option at Zorba is the extensive selection of Greek’s Mixed Grill Platter ($88). This hearty sharing platter includes cheese-stuffed bifteki, pork gyros, chicken and beef souvlaki, lamb chops and Loukaniko. Perfect for sharing with friends and family of two to three, this platter, and served with a side of fried potatoes, salad, and tzatziki. Another substantial dish is the classic grilled platter of Souvlaki ($20) that showcases juicy grilled meat skewers served with chips and tzatziki salad. Zorba's version features the traditional Greek selection; Argentinean air-flown Black Angus striploin, Iberico pork, and Brazilian chicken breast. The meats are marinated for 48 hours in a proprietary blend of spices before being grilled to perfection, making for a full-flavoured and tender bite.
An all-time favourite, the Htapothi Sti Skhara ($30) features a heritage recipe from the isles of Greece. The octopus is first tenderised by hand as the chef beats it with a smooth rock, after which it is sprinkled with salt water and rubbed with the same rock in a circular motion until the tentacles curl up. The octopus is then slow grilled atop a low-burning charcoal fire with sea-salt and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, for a delicate smoky char.
Other noteworthy grilled items include Tsipoura ($32), which utilises sea bream flown in from Greece. The ancient Greeks held the sea bream or 'Orata' (Italian for 'golden') in high regard due to the golden flecks in its eyes, and it was frequently offered to the goddess Aphrodite for its attractiveness and meaty flesh. Keeping the seasoning light and clean, the fish is drizzled with lemon, garlic and olive oil and grilled on a plancha for a meal worthy of a deity.
Aside from pristine seafood and quality cuts of meat, the Greeks are equally known for their saccharine desserts. Fit for any sweet-tooth, Greek Baklava ($12) presents a rich sweet flaky pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and held together with honey. Another dessert staple includes Yiaourti Me Meli ($8) - Greek yoghurt with lashes of honey and crunchy walnuts.
Along with the great tasting food, Zorba also serves Katogi Averoff wines from Metsovo by the bottle to further enhance the Mediterranean experience.

Wildseed Café at The Alkaff Mansion is an offshoot of the original that opened at The Summerhouse in 2017. This second Wildseed is a floral café offering all-day dining of pastries and cakes created by the accomplished 1-Group Executive Pastry Chef Jasmin Chew, with brunch on weekends.
Alfresco seats in the courtyard, amidst tall leafy trees, some as old as the mansion, imbues the café with outdoorsy vibes.
Wildseed is a social hub: a charming, instagrammably picturesque nexus where friends meet friends, families spend weekend outings, and strollers unwind on an exploration of the hill park.
There’s artisanal coffee by Avanti and a fine selection of teas; even a play area for kids. The café will organise regular family- and pet-friendly activities and events as well as kids’ workshops – it’s the perfect place to luxuriate in nature, and watch the day slowly unfold in the soft dappled sunlight under the shade of grand old trees.
UNA finds a new home on the second level of the newly-relaunched Alkaff Mansion. A rich patina of romance washes over the restaurant, from the lovingly restored ebony-hued timbers of the pitched ceiling and floors; to the gorgeous, contemporary lighting feature showering down like silver and crystal rain; to the extraordinary view like a tropical mirror of the rolling green hills of the Basque country.
The floor plan centres on a spacious dining hall, with 2 private rooms easily created through sliding glass panels if privacy calls. Adjacent to the main hall is the UNA bar and dining porch, where an aperitivo can be sipped while taking in the view before or after dinner.
UNA is a homage to the art of gastronomy and living well. Its Spanish roots are wedded to the dynamic individualism of Basque cuisine, resulting in a menu of Basque-inspired dishes and popular favourites from the former establishment crafted using the best produce sourced locally as well as from the Basque and Spanish regions.
Among the signatures are Fideua De Calamares (squid ink Spanish noodles paella with crispy calamari), Pulpo A La Parrilla Con Papas Arrugadas Y Mojo (tender octopus grilled over a charcoal fired parrilla grill accompanied with baby potatoes and a coriander and paprika sauce).
There is also the rich and comforting Paella De Chorizo Y Habitas (classic family-style paella slow cooked with savoury chorizo, fava beans and aromatic saffron), Paella de Mariscon (classic seafood paella with bomba rice, prawns, clams and mussels, enriched with generous touches of saffron) and the evergreen Cochinillo Asado (Spanish crispy roasted suckling pig).
The desserts present decadent Spanish sweets such as Chocolate & Olives, Arroz con Leche de la Abuela (a fragrant Spanish rice pudding served with sherry grapes and a sherry reduction) and Classic Churros, served with spicy pecan chocolate sauce.
At UNA Bar & Lounge, a selection of tea infusion cocktails complements the food.
Living life with gusto, UNA takes diners into the romantic heart of the Basque.
Nothing manifests Basque vibrance like pintxo culture with its air of hedonistic, after-hours revelry. Located on the ground level of newly-relaunched Alkaff Mansion, TXA Pintxo Bar is the first and only bar in Singapore singularly dedicated to this experience. The letter combination ‘Txa’ is unique to the Basque language, forming the sound ‘cha’ which incidentally occurs in Hokkien to mean ‘noisy’, and in Cuban inspiring the dance cha-cha.
Pintxos (pronounced pin-chos) are small snacks served in bars to accompany drinks; and the bar-hopping culture this engenders is also referred to as pintxos. To eat at TXA is to be immersed in the uninhibited buzz of a pintxo bar in the Basque country. It is loud, fun and authentic.
Drinks include Spanish beers, wines and ciders. At the bar is a selection of signature cocktails based on wine, designed to complement the flavours of the pintxos, such as the Tinto de Pintxos created with red wine, pisco, and sweet vermouth as well as The Mansion created with brandy, Grand Marnier, cherry liqueur, and angostura bitters.
The lure of the pintxo culture really gets under one’s skin at TXA; and a stream of Basque-related activities aims to get people even closer.
Free-wheeling TXA is the vibrant soul of the Basques.
A culture needs a home and a proper theatre. The house on the hill, with its beauty and mantle of history, was ideal. The Alkaff Mansion is today a multi-concept Food & Beverage destination housing the Basque-centred TXA Pintxo Bar and UNA, while also housing all-day floral café Wildseed Café – each distinct and embodying a different character.
Restored and relaunched, Alkaff Mansion has become the centre of Basque culture and lifestyle. The greenery and hills, the visible coastline, echo the Basque homeland; the history and architecture, the centrality of food and social life, further the parallels.
The Alkaff Mansion celebrates, indeed flaunts, all things Basque: capturing its verve and heart; showcasing its produce, cuisine and wine. It does this in truest authenticity through a profound partnership with Basqvium, keeper, curator and tireless advocate of Basque cuisine and culture both in and outside Spain. Hand-in-hand with Basqvium through the shared platform of Basque Culinary Institute, 1-Group unites key facets of the essential Basque to create The Alkaff Mansion.
The deep synergy reflects into the experience in multiple ways, seen and unseen: through the rare Basque wine and spirits served in-house, the exclusive Basque produce and authentic Basque flavours, all the way to the Basque members within the team. The cuisine especially benefits from the inclusion of Basque chefs, Marta Elvira Segalés and Silvana Pascual Romero, into 1-Group’s own Spanish Cuisine Development Team which also comprises 1-Group’s talents such as Head Chef Tom Kung of UNA. Day to day, these key members of this development team also take personal care of kitchen operations at The Alkaff Mansion, so that research and theory becomes real; materialising in plate after plate of Basque cuisine on the plate of The Alkaff Mansion diners.
Seated on its hilltop, the Alkaff Mansion has witnessed the passage of time for a hundred years. This 2-storey Tudor-style building was built in 1918 by a member of the prominent Arab family, the Alkaffs.
In 2005, the Alkaff Mansion was accorded conservation building status by the URA, ensuring its key architectural features would be preserved for posterity. Following a number of years when it was left vacant, the mansion was again restored in 2011 to become an Italian restaurant until 2016. The second makeover cost another S$5 million.

The 4,030 sq ft Singapore outlet is the brand's second in Southeast Asia following their Kuala Lumpur opening in 2017.
Taking the phrase “it’s a bit of a stretch” quite literally is Say Chiizu – the irresistibly Instagrammable Hokkaido-style cheese toast that has taken Thailand by storm with its ‘pull-factor’, and is now set to ‘pull’ in the fans from Singapore as well.
Proudly owned by Say Chiizu Pte Ltd in Singapore, the brand will open its first outlet on 15 January at VivoCity and Singaporeans can expect more stores dotted throughout the island in shopping malls such as White Sands Shopping Centre, 313@Somerset and The Clementi Mall in the first quarter 2018. Aside from takeaway kiosks, the brand will also be opening a café in central Singapore in February, this year. There are plans to open 10 outlets by the end of 2018.
A cut above the rest, Say Chiizu’s famous cheese is made with specially imported Japanese milk, thus resulting in a deliciously premium flavour. It is then mixed with a blend of fresh cheeses such as mozzarella to create the optimum texture for that unmistakable ‘cheese-pull’, while staying true to the brand’s emphasis on using ingredients with no additives or preservatives.
The brand’s commitment to making ‘your smile their happiness’ is evident in its ultra-stretchy cheese pull and bright cutesy package, modelled after one of the co-founders’ nickname ‘Bear’. Snugly wrapped in a ‘kawaii' (Japanese for ‘cute’) sunny yellow ‘bear’ sleeve with a smile made up of the Japanese words for ‘Say Chiizu’ the cheese is served between crisp slices of pillowy homemade Hokkaido milk toast while remaining invitingly melty within. Customers can expect a subtle savoury-sweet flavour in every bite that will satisfy all dairy cravings.

Density brings to you the first-ever frozen custard store in Singapore - for a super-premium ice cream experience.
Sporting an industrial-chic look with grey cement flooring and walls, lowly hung light bulbs and refurbished metal furniture from a vintage store, Density's interior décor draws its inspiration from the industrial look of the Chicago 1933 World's Fair, which introduced frozen custard to the greater public.
Frozen Custard contains only half the amount of sugar of a regular frozen yogurt. Because of its low overrun and high butterfat content, there is less need for sugar. This makes them a healthier dessert choice, as frozen custards are lower in calories and sugar and uses natural ingredients such as milk and egg yolks.

Embodying IHC’s vision, the four-storey IHC building is an iconic, unique and sustainable building that blends both traditional Indian as well as modern architectural elements. The architectural design for the facade of IHC is inspired by the “Baoli” (or Indian stepwell), and seeks to create an urban forum for the celebration and appreciation of Indian culture.
The diversity and multi-faceted nature of Indian culture is also captured in the use of a translucent shimmering façade to create an impression of IHC as a “shining jewel” in the day, and the transformation of the IHC into a “glowing lantern” of the Indian community with the lighting of the colourful façade mural at night.
The IHC adopted an inclusive curatorial approach under the guidance of the IHC Concept and Content Sub-committee; and defines Indian in the pre-modern context of the subcontinent. Thematic permanent displays and/or special exhibits as well as programmes at the IHC will showcase various communities from the subcontinent with ‘lived histories’ in Singapore. In addition, memories and accounts of the community have also been captured.
The IHC’s permanent gallery storyline revolves around five themes arranged chronologically to span the time period 1st century CE to the 21st century. The themes present, through artefact and interactive displays, the long history of interactions between South and Southeast Asia as well as the experiences of South Asians in Southeast Asia (especially Malaya); Singapore in particular. They narrate the history of the migrant community and their contributions to Singapore.
The legendary steakhouse, Morton’s, has unveiled a refreshed and contemporary new look following a 3 month renovation.
16 years since the restaurant first opened its doors in Singapore, the time-honoured main dining room, three private dining rooms and Bar 12.21, have all been transformed to reveal a fresh, bright and contemporary space, which exudes sophistication.
The restaurant façade now features French windows which offer an inviting glimpse of the revamp through Bar 12.21 and on to the main dining room beyond. With its lighted bottle display and contemporary chandelier light feature, the chic bar makes an ideal place to rendezvous for aperitifs of signature MORtinis or sample a selection of over 60 whiskies, bourbon and premium spirits.
Over in the main dining room, the use of crisp white paint on the walls is elegantly contrasted against the use of dark wood accents seen in the cornices, window frames and the screen panel features. This is offset by the accents of warm colour tones in the vaulted ceilings; gold in the main dining room and pale blue in the private dining rooms, as well as the use of various textures throughout, such as the brickwork effect stone tiles which frames the showcase kitchen. With a distinct Art Deco feel to the overall design, the restaurant now benefits from a real sense of space - the accumulative result of the removal of the partition between Bar 12.21 and the main dining room; the new wall-to-wall windows that stretch the length of the main dining room; the creative use of mirrors and clean contrasting colour palate, all beneath the warm glow of the bright sparkling chandeliers.
The three private dining rooms, each space unique, follow the clean and contemporary look, and feature distinct pale-blue vaulted ceiling with a cloud mural. New cutlery and glassware completes the overall redesign, not to mention the cherished pig-shaped tabletop oil lamps which have been lovingly restored, and now utilise eco-friendly tealight effect lights.
Oenophiles are sure to delight with the introduction of 52 wine lockers, where you can keep bottles of their favourite vintages, or alternatively, choose from the extensive wine list - many of the bottles which now grace the new showcase wine wall.
The Bar & Billiard Room at Raffles Hotel marks a new era with its return to a storied and sophisticated, yet relaxed bar and lounge specialising in whisky, original and imaginative cocktails, craft beers and high quality cigars.
Noted as the oldest existing bar in its original location in Singapore, the Bar & Billiard Room will now present up to 400 curated whiskies alongside an entirely new cocktail list and bar menu.
With a beautiful room and outdoor covered terraces, the unique and historic setting at Bar & Billiard Room naturally lends itself to the new evolution. The Bar & Billiard Room will also serve as an everyday meeting place as well as for special occasions.
Christoph B. Nyfeler shares his 16 years of whisky experience as Raffles Singapore’s Resident Whisky Expert. Of the 400 hand selected whiskies, many are limited editions and directly imported for the bar. The whisky list boasts a strong Scottish presence with a good selection of American bourbons and Japanese whiskies rounding off the collection.
To add special interest, Christoph will host whisky events such as whisky appreciation masterclasses and whisky dinners regularly. He can also create exclusive whisky pairing menus for groups and corporate events of up to 20 people. You can share your individual taste preferences with Christoph who will then customise a dinner menu where courses are paired with different types of single malt whiskies.
Equal attention has been given to the new whisky-led cocktails created by Raffles Singapore Restaurant and Bar Operations Manager Randolph Velasco and his award-winning bartenders. With special skills and knowledge of infused liqueurs and house-made bitters, the team have based the bar’s new concoctions on classic cocktails with a modern twist in Menu highlights include the BBR 1896, a nod to the year the Bar & Billiard Room was established. The complex cocktail is a delight for the senses; the bourbon is first fat-washed in butter for a creamy mouth feel and savoury flavour, mixed with Angostura bitters, smoked with chamomile tea leaves for a subtle, floral aroma and finally garnished with a slice of orange peel.
The Old Nick was a favourite tipple for navy officers who needed some liquid courage before heading out to sea. The Bar & Billiard Room’s version is a combination of Scotch whisky, thyme liqueur, Dom Benedictine, orange and lemon bitters. The comprehensive cocktail menu encompasses other base spirits such as gin, tequila and vodka as well. Look forward to the Miss “H”, Randolph’s take on the ubiquitous martini featuring kiwi, Cointreau, lime, and muddled kiwi fruit.
Bar bites include a selection of sophisticated nibbles and more substantial sharing plates. An array of cold and hot dishes can either be enjoyed as an accompaniment to drinks or as full-fledged meal. Menu highlights include Crabmeat Cigars, shredded fresh crab meat wrapped in vine leaves.
For a sweet finish in keeping with the bar's theme, Chocolate Whisky Stones are available in three different flavours – dark, milk and white chocolate. The chocolate is first melted down and infused with whisky before being placed in moulds to resemble the whisky stones commonly used to chill the spirit without diluting the drink.
The Bar & Billiard Room also houses one of the five original billiard tables from the turn of the century and you are invited to have a game over drinks. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the bar will feature live jazz.
