This month, SPRMRKT joins a new neighbourhood – the verdant and idyllic Dempsey Hill, with an inspired space and a new cultural-culinary experience through dining, retail and art.
2012 saw the beginnings of the lifestyle F&B brand in a shophouse on McCallum Street favoured by city dwellers as an oasis to the hustle and bustle of CBD life. Eight years later, SPRMRKT has grown into a familiar neighbourhood name; from the bustling central business district to the riverside respite of Robertson Quay, quaint Cluny residential area, and now, at the heart of the Dempsey Hill lifestyle enclave.
Just like its name without the vowels, SPRMRKT is about simplicity, focusing on what matters. At the heart of it is responsibly sourced ingredients prepared meticulously to let their natural flavours shine; warm, friendly service centred on the diner; a showcase of carefully sourced gourmet brands from Singapore and around the region with the aim of giving back; and thoughtful collaborations that support young artists and creatives.
Another reason to drop by SPRMRKT at Dempsey Hill is the house-baked goods fresh from the oven, enticing with their lingering aroma. The range varies daily and includes breads, pastries and tea cakes, as well as must-haves like the Olive Oil Cake and Chiffon Cake in flavours of lychee, strawberry and pandan.
Exclusive on the weekends, listen out for the ice cream man ringing the bell as SPRMRKT at Dempsey Hill brings a little nostalgia to the neighbourhood with the Durian Semifreddo Wafer Sandwich. The frozen semifreddo is house made with luscious D24 durian pulp cocooned in a crispy wafer with vanilla and caramel notes; great for on the go or at the breezy veranda.

Following an ambitious rebranding exercise, homegrown Italian restaurant and bar operators The Cicheti Group has transformed the 1,500 sqft of prime F&B space along South Beach Tower’s retail piazza that previously housed popular modern Australian restaurant Fynn's into Caffe Cicheti. This marks the third Cicheti concept to join the group’s cohort of beloved Italian outfits, which include rustic chic trattoria Cicheti (2013) in Kampong Glam and contemporary pasta bar Bar Cicheti (2018) off Keong Saik.
At this modern-day osteria, fresh, bright flavours found up and down the coasts of Italy are served up at their uncomplicated best. By delving further into these coastal traditions, where tastes are characterised by their lightness and simplicity using the freshest ingredients that embody life along the shores, chef co-owner Lim Yew Aun expands on his culinary affinity with Italy’s diverse foodscape beyond Venice and the broader Mediterranean that’s underpinned his heartfelt brand of cookery since the first Cicheti. Best enjoyed with sommelier-partner Ronald Kamiyama’s curation of quality, quaffable wines that are fun, juicy and approachable—and a special emphasis on non-alcoholic beverages for the discerning non-drinker. The setting, dreamed up by restaurateur Liling Ong and Amsterdam-based interior designer Simone Königshausen, reimagines Fynn’s foliage-filled aesthetic with a fresh coat of dark emerald paint, light tropical prints and charming, bistro-style patio seating, lending a new lease on life to an intimate space that now inspires dining both day and night.
“We had such a good run with Fynn’s and made so many amazing friends along the way. On the other hand, we’ve established such a delicious goodwill with the Cicheti brand, and finally found our way with wines when we opened Bar Cicheti last year. We created Caffe Cicheti not to take away from what Fynn’s has built, but to continue building its legacy as part of the Cicheti family,” explained Ong, who first set up Fynn’s together with her cousin Aun in 2016, three years after they opened the first Cicheti.

Fresh ingredients, hot pans, and sharp knives are Derek, David and Andy’s beliefs in bringing delicious food to the table.
Diners are eating top table food at accessible prices. They are often delightfully surprised by the juxtaposition of seriously good food served in a relaxed no-airs restaurant and a $$ menu.
With its chef trained and grounded in fine cuisine, soups are mirepoix-prepared from scratch, as with the sauces, stocks, and jus where roasting, sautéing and blending are de rigueur in their preparation.
Whether it is the medium done London Broil Flank or Poached Egg Pancetta Carbonara, multiple techniques are used to retain the original flavours of the ingredients, fragrance of the vegetables, and to deliver the desired texture of the dish.
These made from scratch, no pre-mix approaches are what brought the chef and three partners from different backgrounds together. Alvin Tan hailed from 8 years cooking in fine French and European kitchens; Derek Ong has F&B management experience, whilst David Lim and Andy Li are from Design, IT & communication worlds respectively. A common thread runs in their diversity: they all love food, honest unpretentious, delicious food at decent prices.
A space became available in the relatively untapped but emerging nosh locale of Little India, especially with the much anticipated opening of the Rochor MRT Station.
The three foodies saw the potential for a landmark restaurant, firmed up the restaurant concept and exactly one month later, the new generation eatery, Roots Kitchen Bar, was born.
Behind the scene, renovations began immediately. With a classic brick & mortar decor, walls were peeled at the corners and lined by iron grills and edgy lighting frames. The undressed tables and service evoke a casual, friendly atmosphere. With rustic cellar vibes, the place beckons ‘Welcome’ to diners where they can feel right at home having a meal or drinks.

The Nagano Pork with Braised Cabbage side fights nose to nose with the London Broil Beef Flank in winning over meat lovers’ hearts.
For dessert, the Banana Bailey is the Chef’s unique take on the humble bread and butter pudding which has invariably garnered ‘must try’ recommendations from guests.
At the helm of the kitchen, Chef Alvin Tan, began his culinary career in the fine dining kitchen of Les Amis au Jardin, on to the Boathouse at the Fullerton where he started as chef de partie and quickly rose to be chef-in-charge. He was then headhunted out of Singapore 2 years ago to Velassaru, Maldives, where he was in charge of a signature restaurant.
