NParks developed and curated the St John’s Island Trail to encourage public appreciation for its rich biodiversity and the history of St John’s Island and Sisters’ Islands Marine Park. The trail is part of NParks’ outreach initiatives on marine biodiversity under NParks’ Nature Conservation Masterplan, which consolidates Singapore’s biodiversity conservation efforts to help achieve Singapore’s City in a Garden vision.
The 2.8 km St John’s Island Trail comprises 15 stations marked with signboards that serve as both station markers and educational resources, highlighting the diversity of flora and fauna as well as the island’s colourful history.
St John’s Island is rich in local history. Since 1604, the island was marked on explorers’ maps. The island was planted extensively with crops in the mid-19th century, before it became a quarantine centre. In 1948, parts of the island were converted into a detention centre for political prisoners such as C. V. Devan Nair, who later became Singapore’s third President. From the 1970s onwards, the island has been mainly used for recreation and is popular with beach-goers and picnickers. Today, it serves as a base for marine research.
When you are on the island, try spotting Singapore’s tallest bird (1.15 m), the Great-billed Heron. It uses its dagger-like bill to spear large fish. This species is locally critically-endangered due to habitat loss.

The inviting entrance of Sea & Blue beckons with its nautical nuances of blue, orange and white. The wooden bottom of a boat, complete with oars, sits in the middle of the ceiling and is surrounded by ‘waves’. The maritime theme continues with five dinghy-inspired booth seats in the front of the restaurant and the walls are decorated with different creatures of the deep like whales, dolphins, fish, crabs, squid and starfish–giving diners the feeling of dining under the ocean!
The seating capacity of this cavernous restaurant totals an astonishing 350 and also consists of several private rooms and a function room.

Two Cognita schools in Singapore – Australian International School (AIS) and Stamford American International School (SAIS) have collaborated and their world-class Early Learning Village boasting a 50,000 sqm campus is now open. Located at Kim Chuan Lane, the innovative new shared campus has been designed specifically for children aged 18 months to six years old and is the first in the world on this scale for Early Years education.
Among the shared facilities between the two schools in the Village are various multifunctional spaces thoughtfully designed with young children in mind, such as a 20-metre swimming pool which adapts to the competencies of the little swimmers – 10 short horizontal lanes for beginners, and four longer lanes lengthwise for more confident swimmers, and an indoor, air-conditioned gymnasium for their acclaimed SMART Steps specialist physical education classes and after-school enrichment.
Inspired by the world-famous Reggio Emilia philosophy incorporating the environment as a third teacher in its architecture, interior design and curriculum, the Village represents a revolutionary step in early childhood education where this age group is the first and only thought. The campus is designed by award-winning Bogle Architects in collaboration with Gary Moore, Professor of Environmental Behavioural studies at Sydney University, and Rosie Long, a Reggio Emilia Early Years Education specialist, to include specific architectural and design elements that elevate the early learning experience.
Each corner of the Village caters to the growing and developing child, with changing discovery spaces attached to every classroom which empower young learners to play to their strengths and interests. Their learning experience also extends beyond the classroom where they can choose from specialty co-curricular activities such as gymnastics, ballet, sports, drama and language-learning, amongst many others.

Net-Zero Energy Building (NZEB@SDE) will be a new addition to the existing three buildings of the NUSSchool of Design and Environment. The new building, which will be completed in early 2019, will function as a living laboratory to promote research collaboration with public agencies and industry partners.
With a gross floor area of 8,514 square metres, it will house a mix of research laboratories, test-bedding facade, design studios, as well as teaching and common learning spaces. It will also include a 3D Scanning Laboratory, the NUS-JTC Industrial Infrastructure Innovation Centre and the NUS-CDL Smart Green Home.
Conceptualised by the NUS School of Design and Environment, the NZEB@SDE is designed to be climate-responsive with net-zero energy consumption. The six-storey building will feature a range of green building designs, such as harnessing solar energy, hybrid cooling approach, natural ventilation and lighting.
One key aspect of the NZEB@SDE is its contemporary architecture design which demonstrates a deep understanding of the tropical climate of Singapore. The design concept incorporates a large overhanging roof, which together with the double facades on the East and West of the building, shade it from the sun’s heat and provide a cooler interior.
The building design also makes use of the architectural concept of “floating boxes”, where its shallow plan depth and porous layout allows for cross-breezes, natural lighting and views to the outdoors. Weather permitting, rooms can also be opened to natural breezes, and air conditioning is used only where it is needed, reducing the electricity usage of the building. The result is an architecture that seeks to offer a deeply biophillic experience that connects NUS staff and students to the campus’ natural surroundings.
NZEB@SDE is also designed to consume only as much energy as it produces. This is made possible by harvesting solar energy using more than 1,200 solar photovoltaic panels installed on the roof. On days when there is insufficient solar energy, the building will draw energy from the power grid. Over the course of the year, the net amount taken from the grid will be zero – achieving net-zero energy consumption.

Each collection projects a sense of mental toughness and a vibe of poetic romanticism mirroring the hedonistic rebelliousness of Guns N’ Roses. The Container is a tapas and cocktail bar that draws inspiration from the elements of earth, air, water and fire. It is also one of two specially curated concepts – Aburiya Japanese Wagyu Yakiniku and The Container Wagyu Tapas & Bar which are located side by side, right next to the iconic Singapore River on Boat Quay, offering a comprehensive Japanese Wagyu experience.
In Hokkaido, wagyu farmers all have a second ‘home’.
At the end of the day, they will gather in old, used containers which are converted into informal ‘bars’.
It is at the bars where they share anecdotes about their day’s work and their family (or how some miss theirs who live in other prefectures). They enjoy small plates of wagyu dishes, served up along with sake and beer. Sometimes, the farmers take turns to prepare their hometown wagyu specialities.
Laughing, bonding, over their stories. A place of camaraderie and friendship. This is a celebration of life. The Container is inspired by this experience.
At Aburiya, you will embark on a real Japanese Wagyu beef journey in more ways than one. Presenting to their customers a unique experience with two specially curated concepts – Aburiya Japanese Wagyu Yakiniku and The Container Wagyu Tapas & Bar are both located on Boat Quay, right next to the iconic Singapore River.
As believers of the “nose to tail” philosophy, the people behind Aburiya and The Container respectfully ensure that they use all the cuts of the Japanese Wagyu beef which they import to Singapore from their partner farmers, to minimise wastage and also to showcase the various unique cuts of the beef.
At Aburiya, they pride ourselves in delivering the perfect yakiniku experience.
They also import their own ‘bincho’, also known as ‘white charcoal’, from their own source. A Japanese tradition for yakiniku, grilling Japanese wagyu over ‘white charcoal’ imparts a special flavour to the slices of wagyu beef.
Located on the second storey of a Boat Quay shophouse, Bee Bee's is the oasis in the CBD with a view of the Singapore River and skyline. Named after the matron of his life, 22-year-old Bryan Kishore emptied his bank account to open up Bee Bee’s, a Tiki cocktail bar with elements of Peranakan fare - a beautiful fusion of Malay and Chinese cultures, and each one's favourite ingredients and cooking techniques. Get ready for nights filled with swagger, spice, and bad advice.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officially opened The Island Defence Training Institute, a new training institute at Clementi Camp on 31st July where up to 18,000 active soldiers and national servicemen (NSmen) will be trained in counter-terrorism and homeland security.
A further 15,000 personnel every year will undergo training for other island defence roles.
The training will focus on further developing individual skill sets acquired from the SAF's current urban operations training, and adapting them to homeland security operations. The training will cover: (i) scenario-based simulation and live-firing for homeland security operations; (ii) search and arrest procedures to be undertaken by SAF personnel; (iii) knowledge of legal powers and rights of private defence; and (iv) retractable truncheon drills. NS units will undergo refresher training during their In-Camp Training (ICT) so that their skills are kept current and they can be readily deployed for operations.
To ensure that training is realistic and effective, the IDTI will leverage training technology such as Judgmental Video Simulation Training at the Infantry Gunnery and Tactical Simulator, which has been updated to include multiple homeland security operations scenarios. Conducted in 50m ranges, this training puts soldiers through simulated homeland security operations scenarios, and exercises their ability to decide to shoot or not depending on whether the target is friend or foe. This increases operational readiness by allowing soldiers to exercise their thinking and decision-making processes in a highly immersive environment, and better prepares them to manage complex homeland security operations.

Conceptualized by award-winning bartender Sam Wong, Chikin’s drinks menu boasts a bevy of up to 20 different cocktails, with a majority of 15 being house-made signature cocktail infusions. As Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay turns 15 this year, the national performing arts centre will be adding a new venue to its stable, enabling it to create more unique Singapore stories and shared experiences for society through the arts.
To be completed in 2021, the new building situated along the Esplanade Waterfront will feature a flexible theatre which can seat about 550 people and an outdoor activities plaza integrated with popular dining outlets at the Esplanade Annexe.
This waterfront theatre hopes to inspire our young and nurture the next generation of artists, by commissioning and producing more new works by Singapore artists and companies and taking them from home to the world stage.
With the new 550-seat waterfront theatre, Esplanade will be able to:
Develop and present a wider range of quality arts programmes for schools that inspire and challenge the young; develop in future generations empathy, curiosity and creativity; and provide them new perspectives on different cultures and our society.
Allow Singapore’s promising community, youth and traditional arts groups, especially in theatre and dance, to take that next step to reach a wider audience along Esplanade’s busy waterfront.
Work closely with both Singapore and regional artists to create new works and to take these artists and works beyond Singapore.
Present a greater diversity of leading artists and productions that inspire, given that, a majority of works produced today for major arts festivals are for a medium-sized space.

Nature reserves are protected areas of rich biodiversity that are representative sites of key indigenous ecosystems. To safeguard the native flora and fauna in these areas, there are special restrictions on the activities that can be carried out.
As part of a holistic conservation approach, some nature parks have been established on the margins of the Nature Reserves to act as green buffers.
The National Parks Board (NParks) has unveiled plans for a new 67-hectare Rifle Range Nature Park, which will serve as the southern buffer park for Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and is expected to be completed in 2020
The 67-hectare Rifle Range Nature Park is located at the southern end of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. As a buffer park, Rifle Range Nature Park will help to reduce visitorship pressure on Bukit Timah Nature Reserve by providing interesting alternative venues for the public to enjoy nature-related activities.
Being next to the nature reserve, Rifle Range Nature Park provides complementary forest habitat for biodiversity from Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Surveys indicate that native flora species growing in the nature reserve can be seen at the fringe of the nature park. Visitors may be able to chance upon native fauna species such as the Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica) and Horsfield’s Flying Squirrel (Lomys horsfieldii). Native crabs, frogs, fishes and snakes can also be seen in the slow-flowing sandy streams.
Visitors will be able to experience the canopies of a regenerating secondary forest through a Sky Garden. It is an elevated walkway that provides a seamless experience from Beauty World to the Sin Seng Quarry.
The former Sin Seng Quarry will be sensitively enhanced to support the rich biodiversity in the area. The quarry was once one of the deepest quarries in Singapore (55 metres at its deepest point), but has since been backfilled. It will be transformed into a freshwater habitat with alook-out point for visitors to appreciate marsh birds.
Hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty will also be added to give visitors a chance to learn more about the history of quarrying in Singapore and the heritage highlights within the site.
Aerial rope bridges across Rifle Range Road will be provided to allow animals to move safely between Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Rifle Range Nature Park. The first such bridges in Singapore, they aim to restore the ecological connection between the two forest habitats.
