The Botanical Art Gallery is housed within Singapore Botanic Gardens' second refurbished conserved building, Gallop House No. 7 (Inverturret), which was built in 1906. The gallery highlights the vital role that art plays in the scientific documentation of plants in Singapore and the region, as well as how art can inspire renewed appreciation of the natural world around us. This will be Singapore’s first permanent display of botanical art, where visitors will be able to see a selection of the Singapore Botanic Gardens’ collection that includes more than 2,000 botanical paintings, as well as hundreds of sketches, line drawings and photographs. The display will also showcase various art forms, from original watercolours and ink drawings to prints and printing blocks.
Some of the iconic artwork on display includes the oldest dated painting in the Gardens’ collection completed in 1890, of Phaius tankervilleae, an orchid which grows in freshwater swamp forests, as well as an illustration of Durio singaporensis, which is commonly known as the Singapore Durian.
Visitors will also be able to try their hand at the various techniques involved in botanical illustration, such as sketching, mixing colours, and composing scenes. The activity room also offers sweeping views of the forested areas surrounding the house.
The Botanical Art Gallery will also feature changing exhibitions that complement the Gardens’ permanent artwork collection. The first show, ‘Plants in Print’, will showcase a collection of rare books that records the development of early colonial botany in South and Southeast Asia. Local artists such as Shubigi Rao and Weixin Chong have also been commissioned to offer creative responses to these books and produce a series of contemporary artworks.
Gallop House No. 5 (Atbara) is Singapore’s oldest surviving colonial era or black-and-white bungalow. Built in 1898, it now houses the Forest Discovery Centre @ OCBC Arboretum, which showcases Singapore’s forest ecosystems, and highlights the importance of conserving them. Through a series of interpretive and interactive displays, visitors can enjoy a bird's eye view of Singapore’s diverse forests, and learn about the Gardens’ historical role in conserving them. Highlights include a photographic installation of forest trees, family-friendly displays and videos featuring three distinctive forest habitats found in Singapore, and their unique flora and fauna.
The Forest Discovery Centre @ OCBC Arboretum will also host the Singapore Botanic Gardens’ Tropical Forest Ecology Research programme. This programme reprises a historical role for the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which dates back to the late 1800s. One of the Gardens’ early superintendents, Nathaniel Cantley, was tasked to survey the forests in the Straits Settlement in 1882. His report led to the demarcation of the first forest reserves in Singapore in 1884, in order to prevent the ecology and climate from further deteriorating.
Complementing the Forest Discovery Centre is the OCBC Arboretum, which is a first-of-its-kind high-tech arboretum in Southeast Asia. Opened in October 2019, the arboretum plays an important role in the Gardens’ conservation work, housing and displaying the Gardens’ growing collection of rare dipterocarps.

As part of the Ministry of Education’s continuing efforts to support students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), Pathlight School will operate a second permanent campus in Tampines from January 2023. This was announced by Second Minister for Education, Ms Indranee Rajah, during her visit to Pathlight Campus 1, where she also recently officiated the opening of its inclusive worksite.
Established by the Autism Resource Centre (Singapore), Pathlight is a government-funded Special Education (SPED) school, which offers the national curriculum to students with moderate-to-severe SEN, and students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). To address the growing demand from students with ASD who are able to access the national curriculum, the new Campus 2 will provide about 500 additional primary level school places.
The new purpose-built campus will be located at the site of the former East View Primary School at Tampines Street 91. The site was selected based on the geographical distribution of Pathlight’s current demand, and the site’s close proximity to mainstream schools such as Junyuan Primary School and St Hilda’s Primary School. Such physical proximity will enhance opportunities for interaction through joint activities, between Pathlight students and their peers in mainstream schools.
To support learning for Pathlight students, the new Campus 2 will have infrastructure provisions similar to mainstream primary schools, plus specialised facilities to cater to the needs of students with ASD. These include an Indoor Sports Hall, a daily living skills room, and therapy rooms.
Currently, Pathlight has two campuses, with about 1,400 primary, secondary and vocational track students. The interim Campus 2 will continue to serve its students when the new Campus 2 starts operation in January 2023.
MOE will continue to monitor and review the demand for SPED school places, and will work with Social Service Agencies to provide sufficient capacity to cater to the needs of specific student profiles. Please refer to the Annex for more information on MOE’s ongoing efforts to meet demand for places in SPED schools.

Did you know that more than two-thirds of the current Bishan town was once occupied by a cemetery and a village? Since the 19th century, Bishan was a Chinese burial ground called Peck San Theng. The Cantonese community was in charge of Peck San Theng, with more than 50,000 graves spread across the region. Kampong San Theng was the main Chinese village then.
The new $700,000 heritage gallery tells the story of Kampong San Teng.
The 560 sqm gallery held its official opening on 3rd June.
Admission to the gallery is free. It is open from 9.30am to 4pm every day except on public holidays.

Although the best architectural minds came up with the 'nest' concept as a nurturing ground for students, it is the valuable inputs from over 100 teachers that have added a personal touch to the design of this 21st century school. Brainstorming, discussing and pooling in ideas from best practises and correct practises in the industry, their dedicated team of teachers indulged in an in-depth and meaningful discussion for over three years to ensure that the right facilities are put in place for the overall benefit of their students during the making of the school. The result is a labour of love and true dedication of these educators who insisted on only the best for their students and made sure they got it.
The revamped Sustainable Singapore Gallery at Marina Barrage presents an overview of Singapore’s commitment to sustainable development. While there are exhibits that chart the milestones which brought about the high quality living environment Singaporeans enjoy today, the focus in many parts of the Gallery is on the challenges ahead and the steps people in Singapore need to take together as a nation to keep the country smart and green.
The Gallery is organised into six zones, tracing Singapore’s response to climate change, our water management strategies, zero waste initiatives and efforts to keep Singapore clean, green and sustainable, including investments in renewable energy.
The interactive panels and multi-sensory exhibits will appeal to the young and old. There are also interesting artefacts such as a porcelain figurine presented to Dutch economist Dr Albert Winsemius in 1993 after he famously lost a wager, with Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his team, that the Singapore River could not sustain life.
Admission is free to the 1,618 sqm gallery. Free guided tours are available for booking through PUB website. Read more about the gallery and its different zones here.

Drum Tutor at The Grandstand offers an extensive and engaging drumming program that caters to both kids and adults through it’s own curriculum for students across all levels. All That Jazz Dance Academy, one of Singapore’s top dance schools, has recently opened its second studio at 10 Winstedt Road.
Since its inception in 2014, All That Jazz Dance Academy has provided students of all ages with a high standard of artistic dance education to inspire and foster excellence in the arts. At its studios in Forum The Shopping Mall and Winstedt Road, students are offered a wide variety of popular dance classes like Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, Lyrical, Mommy and Me, Musical Theatre, Acro Dance and Twinkle Tots.
Vicky Lee Ward, Director of All That Jazz Dance Academy, started the academy out of her desire to share her deep passion for dance with others. She wanted to provide a safe and loving space, where students can learn dance and feel at home in the studios. To Vicky, dance is not just a super fun activity, but also one that can transform lives by building character, discipline and confidence.
The academy has grown significantly with students ranging from two-year-olds to adults, all united by their love for dance. The decision to open a second studio was made as it was getting pretty full at its Forum location. The space at 10 Winstedt Road was chosen due to several reasons – the spacious studios, the lush surrounding greenery, the cozy feeling of the community at Winstedt and the convenience of the location as it is close to Newton MRT station.
Compared to the Forum branch, the new studio at Winstedt Road boasts larger studio spaces. The comfortable waiting lounge is also much bigger, and there are a lot of new classes offered at Winstedt.
With their recent expansion, All That Jazz Dance Academy hopes to continue to inspire more dance students with positive experiences in its studios, with the teachers and staff members. Ultimately, All That Jazz plans to collaborate with more dance institutions and the entertainment industry to provide their students with more opportunities to pursue dance at a professional level.
New students of the academy can enjoy a free trial class at its new Winstedt Road studio. For more information and to sign up, visit here.

Two Cognita schools in Singapore – Australian International School (AIS) and Stamford American International School (SAIS) have collaborated and their world-class Early Learning Village boasting a 50,000 sqm campus is now open. Located at Kim Chuan Lane, the innovative new shared campus has been designed specifically for children aged 18 months to six years old and is the first in the world on this scale for Early Years education.
Among the shared facilities between the two schools in the Village are various multifunctional spaces thoughtfully designed with young children in mind, such as a 20-metre swimming pool which adapts to the competencies of the little swimmers – 10 short horizontal lanes for beginners, and four longer lanes lengthwise for more confident swimmers, and an indoor, air-conditioned gymnasium for their acclaimed SMART Steps specialist physical education classes and after-school enrichment.
Inspired by the world-famous Reggio Emilia philosophy incorporating the environment as a third teacher in its architecture, interior design and curriculum, the Village represents a revolutionary step in early childhood education where this age group is the first and only thought. The campus is designed by award-winning Bogle Architects in collaboration with Gary Moore, Professor of Environmental Behavioural studies at Sydney University, and Rosie Long, a Reggio Emilia Early Years Education specialist, to include specific architectural and design elements that elevate the early learning experience.
Each corner of the Village caters to the growing and developing child, with changing discovery spaces attached to every classroom which empower young learners to play to their strengths and interests. Their learning experience also extends beyond the classroom where they can choose from specialty co-curricular activities such as gymnastics, ballet, sports, drama and language-learning, amongst many others.

D-Flat Studios has expanded its music education business from a 400 sq ft operation in Tiong Bahru to an additional 2,100 sq ft educational space at The Salvation Army @ Family Hub on Tanglin Road. Founded in 2012, D-Flat Studios is a music school specialising in piano, vocal and musical theatre education.
The Tanglin Studio boasts 5 differently themed learning spaces, and a recording studio. A large common area greets students and parents when they first enter, and this space is also used for theory and musicianship classes.
The Studio distinguishes itself through experiential learning. Students are taught the language of music, and are encouraged to apply that knowledge across a spectrum of instruments. Chiefly, aural and musicianship are basic fundamentals in their pedagogy, using the piano and voice as an aid to learning music. The objective is to give them an understanding of the aural landscape they live in, complementing their academia by encouraging them to develop their cognitive abilities.
The Studio currently teaches students from 4 to 89 years old, and offers free trial classes.
