Singapore’s latest mall library will open in VivoCity on 12 January 2019, promising book lovers here an exciting new venue with the latest features and services. The public library will offer conducive reading spaces for patrons of all ages set against a splendid view of Sentosa. To fit its location and help patrons locate it easily, the library will be named Library@Harbourfront.
The library, which will be situated at level three of the VivoCity shopping mall, will be conveniently linked to the HarbourFront MRT station, which is connected to the North-East and Circle lines, and the HarbourFront Bus Interchange. “We want our libraries to be as accessible as possible, so that more patrons of all ages can make use of the library to read and learn,” said the National Library Board’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Elaine Ng.
The library will be relocated from Bukit Merah Central. The present Bukit Merah Public Library will cease operations from 1 December 2018. After the library has moved out, the community’s grassroots leaders and a few social service organisations will provide a variety of services and programmes at the site. These will include a mini-library and reading corner supported by NLB.
To continue to serve the reading needs of Bukit Merah residents, NLB has also set up another 12 reading corners in the area in the past year. The 12 mini book hubs offer over 5,000 books and 250 seats in total. These corners cater to residents of all ages, from children and students, to adults and seniors.
On top of the reading corners, NLB will look into bringing one of its MOLLY mobile libraries to the area fortnightly, to provide residents with additional books and programmes. With this service, they will be able to borrow and return library books conveniently.
Leading up to library@harbourfront’s opening, residents will also be treated to special preview tours of the new library space. The tours will be held one week before the library officially opens in January 2019, allowing them to have a first look at the new features.

The estimated completion of the new Punggol Coast MRT Station is slated for much earlier than the original 2030 timeline to support growing developments in Punggol North.

Punggol Coast MRT Station (NE18) is a future underground station along the North East Line (NEL) just off Punggol Road. Expected to be completed by Year 2023, it will take over Punggol MRT/LRT Station as the northern terminus of the NEL.

Singapore's desalination journey marks a major milestone with the opening of the Tuas Desalination Plant (TDP). This is the country's third desalination plant and the first to be owned and operated by PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency.
The TDP is a strategic infrastructural asset that will boost Singapore's desalination capacity from the current 100mgd to 130mgd, meeting up to 30% of the country's current water demand. By 2060, desalination is expected to meet up to 30% of Singapore's water needs then.
The TDP is a compact plant, occupying a footprint of 3.5 hectares. It can produce up to 30 million gallons a day (mgd) (or 136,000 m3) of drinking water, equivalent to the water demand of about 200,000 households.
TDP boasts of many firsts. Besides being the first plant to be owned and operated by PUB, it is also the first desalination plant in Singapore to adopt a robust pre-treatment process that combines Dissolved Air Floatation and Ultrafiltration1. Such a combination helps to reduce membrane fouling when treating seawater of varying water quality, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.

The revamped Sustainable Singapore Gallery at Marina Barrage presents an overview of Singapore’s commitment to sustainable development. While there are exhibits that chart the milestones which brought about the high quality living environment Singaporeans enjoy today, the focus in many parts of the Gallery is on the challenges ahead and the steps people in Singapore need to take together as a nation to keep the country smart and green.
The Gallery is organised into six zones, tracing Singapore’s response to climate change, our water management strategies, zero waste initiatives and efforts to keep Singapore clean, green and sustainable, including investments in renewable energy.
The interactive panels and multi-sensory exhibits will appeal to the young and old. There are also interesting artefacts such as a porcelain figurine presented to Dutch economist Dr Albert Winsemius in 1993 after he famously lost a wager, with Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his team, that the Singapore River could not sustain life.

PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the enhanced conveyance system of the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) Phase 2 to mark the start of construction works.
A super highway for used water management, the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) was conceived in the 1990s as a long-term solution for Singapore’s used water collection, treatment, reclamation and disposal needs.
The deep tunnels in Phase 2 will connect to the existing deep tunnels in Phase 1 serving the eastern part of Singapore and the public sewer network to create one seamless integrated system. The whole of Singapore will be served by the DTSS when Phase 2 is complete by 2025. Used water will be conveyed from the DTSS via gravity to three centralised water reclamation plants for treatment, before it undergoes further purification to produce NEWater, or discharged into the sea.
The new Tuas Bus Terminal, located along Tuas West Drive is integrated with Tuas MRT Depot, sitting atop the depot building for more productive use of land, and has access ramps for buses leading to Tuas West Drive and Tuas Link 4.
This new terminal is part of LTA’s ongoing efforts to upgrade our bus infrastructure to better serve the needs of commuters. These efforts include constructing new bus interchanges, upgrading existing ones, as well as refurbishing the facilities at older interchanges.
The new Tuas Bus Terminal is equipped with two alighting berths, and one bus-stop style boarding berth to accommodate boarding and alighting activities. It features a priority queue zone and barrier-free toilets to better cater to the needs of the elderly and less mobile. There will also be enhanced facilities for bus captains and staff, including dedicated staff toilets and a staff lounge.
All four bus services currently operating from the existing Tuas Bus Terminal, i.e. Services 192, 193, 247, and 248, will operate from the new Tuas Bus Terminal. With the new terminal, these four bus services will no longer call at Bus Stop 25411 along Tuas West Drive.
Canberra Station is a new MRT stop on the North-South Line. The North-South Line is Singapore’s first MRT line – parts of it were open in 1987 – but a new Canberra Station will be added to it in 2019.
As the elevated station is being “tagged” onto an existing line, construction will be challenging as the planners have to be mindful of working hours and work spaces.
When the new station opens in 2019, residents in the vicinity will have a direct connection to the MRT network, without the need to take a bus. Commuters travelling towards the city centre or Jurong East will save up to 10 minutes of travelling time.
To better facilitate commuter movement and enhance accessibility, Canberra station is designed with five entrances, with one connected to the new housing estates across Canberra Link. An elevated link bridge to be built across Canberra Link will enable commuters to directly access the city-bound train platform. The new station will also have covered linkways to bus stops, pick-up and drop-off points as well as bicycle parks.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the first three civil contracts for Circle Line 6 (CCL6) totalling S$1.75 billion. Works on these three contracts are expected to commence by the end of 2017 and complete by 2025.
The 4-kilometre CCL6 will have three stations, and will close the loop for the Circle Line (CCL) by connecting HarbourFront Station to Marina Bay Station. When the CCL6 stations of Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward are completed in 2025, the CCL will have a total of 33 stations, including 12 interchange stations with other MRT lines. It will also expand the rail network to areas such as Spottiswoode and the southern edge of our existing CBD.
With CCL6, commuters will enjoy a direct route between areas in the west like Pasir Panjang and Kent Ridge and key employment areas in the Central Business District, as well as upcoming developments in the Marina Bay area. Commuters travelling from areas like Paya Lebar and Mountbatten will also enjoy faster access to the retail and office centres in the HarbourFront area.
As an orbital line, CCL enhances overall connectivity and capacity, and strengthens the resilience of the MRT network by connecting the existing radial lines and creating multiple routes between stations. For example, a commuter travelling from Jurong East to Marina Bay will have the alternate option of transferring to the Circle Line at Buona Vista Station.
To cater to future needs, Kim Chuan Depot will be expanded to almost double its capacity from 70 to 133 trains. The integrated depot will also house 550 buses, which will allow us to optimise land use. The expansion of the depot will be completed at about the same time as CCL6 in 2025.
The Downtown Line 3 (DTL3) will open on 21 October 2017, making it the longest underground and driverless MRT line in Singapore, surpassing the 35.7km Circle Line (CCL). The completed DTL which will be 42km long will facilitate direct travel from the north-western and eastern areas of the island to the Central Business District (CBD) and Marina Bay areas, providing greater connectivity to residential, industrial and lifestyle enclaves.
DTL1 with six stations from Chinatown to Bugis opened on 22 December 2013 and DTL2 with 12 stations from Bukit Panjang to Rochor opened on 27 December 2015. The DTL3 Extension from Expo to Sungei Bedok, an additional 2.2km, will open in 2024.
The 21-kilometre long DTL3 comprises 16 stations and is the longest stretch of the Downtown Line to be opened. DTL3 includes three interchange stations at MacPherson, Tampines, and Expo. The MacPherson interchange station links DTL3 to the CCL, while the latter two stations connect the line to the East-West Line (EWL), providing commuters greater accessibility to the rest of the island and significantly shortening their travelling time. There are eight Civil Defence shelters on DTL3, namely Geylang Bahru, Bedok North, Bedok Reservoir, Tampines West, Tampines, Tampines East, Upper Changi and Expo.
The first 10 stations from Fort Canning to Bedok North have achieved their Temporary Occupation Permit status while final fitting out works are currently in progress at the last six stations.
This project marks another step towards water sustainability. When completed in 2020, it will produce up to 30 million gallons of fresh drinking water per day.
Leveraging its close proximity to the sea and reservoir to enhance water supply resilience, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant is poised to be a lush green gem along the Eastern Park Connector Network with its innovative design.
Keppel Infrastructure Holdings Pte Ltd (Keppel Infrastructure) and PUB, Singapore's national water agency, have unveiled the innovative design of the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant, Singapore's fourth desalination plant, at its groundbreaking ceremony conducted recently at the Marina Barrage.
The first of its kind in Singapore, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant will be a large-scale dual-mode desalination plant in Singapore that can treat both seawater and freshwater. Depending on wet or dry weather conditions, water is channelled either from the Marina Reservoir or the sea to the plant, where it will be treated.
The plant also achieves multiple uses of land, with underground treatment facilities and 20,000 square metres (sqm) of open green space on the rooftop for community recreation.
All of the plant's water treatment equipment will be located underground, topped off by a gently sloping green lawn as its roof.
The desalination plant will also incorporate environmentally friendly features such as rainwater harvesting. Rainwater collected will be used to irrigate the green roof and support the facility's water features and landscaping needs.
4 MRT stations on Tuas West Extension will open on 18 June 2017, cutting down some commuters' journeys by up to 35 minutes.
The four above-ground stations which are beyond the current Joo Koon station are Gul Circle, Tuas Crescent, Tuas West Road and Tuas Link. They are part of the new 7.5km Tuas West Extension, which is expected to serve 100,000 commuters daily, in particular the many workers in the Jurong and Tuas industrial estates, who will see their journeys shortened.
For as an example; a journey from Ang Mo Kio to Tuas West can be cut by about 35 minutes from about 100 minutes currently, to 65 minutes with the new extension
The Tuas West Extension project also includes the construction of the Tuas viaduct, which opened on Feb 18, and a 26ha integrated depot.
There will be a preview of the extension at an open house on 16 June. All four stations will be opened to the public from noon to 8pm.
Built in the 1990s, the Pang Sua Pond in Bukit Panjang is a stormwater collection pond that collects rainwater runoff from the surrounding areas before the water is pumped to the Upper Seletar Reservoir for storage and treatment.
After a 30-month makeover project; the revitalised Pang Sua Pond under PUB’s Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme was officially unveiled on Saturday 25th March 2017.
The new boardwalk around the Pang Sua Pond is set to become a community focal point, connecting residents to facilities in the vicinity. Visitors can take a stroll on the 480m-long timber boardwalk that is suspended 7m over the pond. There are two lookout decks that offer panoramic views of the waterfront and a multi-purpose stage for outdoor performances.
Pang Sua Pond is also home to Singapore’s second-largest man-made floating wetland system, after the Sengkang Floating Wetland in Punggol Reservoir.
The fifth NEWater plant located at Changi has launched yesterday. The plant spans 49,000 sq m, and produces enough water to fill 92 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
NEWater, a pillar of Singapore's water sustainability strategy, is high-grade reclaimed water. Produced from treated used water that is further purified using advanced membrane technologies and ultra-violet disinfection, it is ultra-clean and safe to drink. With the opening of this fifth plant (jointly developed by a foreign and a local company), Singapore's NEWater capacity increased from 30 to 40 per cent of the Republic's water demand of 430 million gallons per day.
A new bus interchange will be opening in Tampines on Dec 18, offering residents more bus services and improved connectivity. It will also have features that are elderly- and disabled-friendly. Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that the new interchange is part of the authority's efforts to create a more inclusive and family-friendly public transport system.
Connected via a 250m barrier-free sheltered walkway, the new bus interchange will complement the operations at the current Tampines Bus Interchange. In line with the Government's move to improve first-and-last-mile connectivity for public transport, Tampines Concourse Bus Interchange will also have 40 bicycle lots for commuters who cycle there.
