Stewing during months of closure due to Singapore’s circuit breaker measures, Barbary Coast has reopened its downstairs venue, Deadfall, with new menus, new vibes and new hours.
Expanding beyond the initial opening menu, Deadfall II offers a comprehensive all-day dining menu with delicious, affordable and approachable dishes. Starting with snacks and bar bites under “Today’s Pickings”, highlights include the highly addictiveFive Dolla’ Slider (you guessed it, S$5++) with lamb merguez on a Deadfall bakery bun, dressed with Tzatziki and baby rocket, and the indulgent Spinach & Artichoke Dip (S$14++) with baby spinach, roasted artichoke and Cynar cream cheese. For heartier fare, options include original favourites such as the TTW Sando (S$17++) with a choice of smoked ham or beef pastrami served on a tater tot waffle with salsa roja, Chef’s sauerkraut and smokey cheddar and the House Nachos with a choice of chili con vegetarian “carne” or beef carne (S$12++ for small / S$25++ for family size), toppings and bottomless queso. The food menu also features new additions such as the 200g grass-fed Australian Ribeye (S$28++) served with chimichurri, andPoutine (S$12++), the Canadian dream with golden fries, smoked cheese curds and beef jus. Those in the know may opt to order off the “secret menu” – you’ll have to ask to find out more.
The drinks menu has expanded to offer eight affordable, creative cocktails which stay true to the original colour-inspired concept, alongside a selection of classics from around the world (all cocktails at S$20++). For a more interactive experience, ask for the paper fortune teller menu, aka “The Click Clack”, which offers a fun way to choose your colourful cocktail based on your mood and desires. Cocktails are accompanied by the “Beer, Wine and Grog” menu offering a curated selection of wine and prosecco (all glasses S$16++, all bottles $60++), Billecart-Salmon Brut Champagne (S$100++ per bottle), ice-cold draft beer (S$6 / S$10 NETT) and canned beer and bottled cider (S$14++).
As the sun sets, the casual, open-air café and pub transforms into a more intimate, hidden away venue with one central entrance to facilitate safe check-in and contract tracing. Guests can enjoy table or bar seating for groups up to five, all with safe distancing measures in place.
Deadfall at Barbary Coast is now open from 3pm Monday through Friday, 4.30pm on Saturdays (still closing at 10:30pm due to government restrictions) with power points and free wi-fi to facilitate remote work during the day. In accordance with Singapore’s phase two reopening requirements, Deadfall will close at 10:30 p.m. nightly. Takeaway is available while kitchen is open, with dinner service from 4.30pm to close (Monday through Saturday), with lunch service from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. (weekdays) and dinner service from 4:30 p.m. to close (Monday through Saturday). Delivery options are only available through Barbary Coast’s website from 3 – 10pm.
Barbary Coast Ballroom, located upstairs at the dual-concept venue, will follow with a reopening slated for August.

Singapore Philatelic Museum will be closed for redevelopment to refresh the museum’ infrastructure, content and offerings to enhance the visitor experience for Singaporeans. This will be a major redevelopment since SPM’s opening in 1995. The museum will be closed to the public from 18 March 2019, and is expected to re-open to the public in 2021.
Dedicated to showcasing Singapore’s rich philatelic heritage, SPM uses stamps as windows to introduce Singapore’s heritage and culture, as well as our connections to the world. Located at 23B Coleman Street, the building that houses SPM was formerly part of the Anglo Chinese School, and later the Methodist Book Room. SPM was officially opened on 19 August 1995 as a project of the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore. Since 2000, the museum has been managed by National Heritage Board.
Redevelopment works at SPM will include essential infrastructural upgrades to the museum building, as well as a revamp of the permanent and changing galleries to improve visitor experience.
During its redevelopment, SPM will continue to engage the young through travelling exhibitions and education programmes at pre-schools, primary and secondary schools. It will also continue to organise signature events such as the annualNational Stamp Collecting Competition and Draw My Stamp Story Art Competition. Grand Shanghai is helmed by Master Chef Jacky Tang, who brings with him 28 years of experience working in award-winning restaurants and hotels across Singapore and China and is known for his distinct talent of using innovative new techniques to tease out authentic Shanghainese flavours. The restaurant’s new menu is a celebration of the freshest and finest ingredients, incorporating influences from Hong Kong, Beijing, Sichuan and Singapore.
The extensive menu features a tantalising mix of Shanghainese specialities, dim sum staples and a selection of crispy, tender barbecued meats. Each dish is carefully arranged and presented to resemble exquisite works of art, in a celebration of taste and visual flair.
Elaborating on his culinary creations, Master Chef Jacky Tang shares: “The conceptualisation of these dishes was as much about staying true to Shanghainese cuisine as it was about bringing a superior dining experience to the table. By using premium ingredients from around the world and employing contemporary techniques, these traditional recipes have been updated and elevated to reflect the extravagance of Grand Shanghai.”
Adapted to suit local tastes, the new menu features lighter flavours to complement the Singapore weather as well as the addition of more varied spices. Duck also features heavily in this iteration of the menu for its richness of flavour. Start with the Light and Shadow Crispy Duck – a twist on the traditional beef version – paper-thin slices of duck that shatter into delightfully flavourful shards with hints of wasabi, deftly placed on an intricate Osmanthus syrup sculpture that provides a sweet finish to the dish.
The Grand Shanghai Tea-Smoked Duck, at once crispy and juicy, is served with soft, pillowy handmade buns and presented in a chamber of tea and osmanthus smoke for an infusion of earthy and floral notes with maximum visual impact. For a novel combination of the Peking Duck and the popular Shanghainese lamb wraps, try the Spiced Crispy Lamb – well seasoned cubes of charcoal-grilled lamb with a crunchy cumin and paprika crust, served with a lightly warmed pancakes, scallions, cucumber and a garlic soy sauce for the slightest suggestion of heat.
Other standout signatures also include seafood offerings like the refreshing Fresh Sliced Abalone served cold with a tart pomelo vinegar and sake jelly that beautifully enhances the briny abalone; and the Deep-fried Yellow Croaker Fish with Roselle Sauce – slices of lightly deep-fried fish accompanied by a side of homemade pickled onions marinated in roselle jus for a delightful sweet savoury contrast.

The Gallery is organised into six zones, tracing Singapore’s response to climate change, our water management strategies, zero waste initiatives and efforts to keep Singapore clean, green and sustainable, including investments in renewable energy.
The interactive panels and multi-sensory exhibits will appeal to the young and old. There are also interesting artefacts such as a porcelain figurine presented to Dutch economist Dr Albert Winsemius in 1993 after he famously lost a wager, with Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his team, that the Singapore River could not sustain life.
