Occupying a small shophouse half the size of their restaurant, the intimate space is minimalist yet cozy with whitewashed concrete walls, wooden shelf displays of trinkets like retro cookie jars and cooking memorabilia, and a corner dedicated to fancy cutlery and artisan baking goods for sale. But don't expect to get too cushy because apart from a table and a few chairs outside, there aren't any dine-in options.
Apart from the usual croissants and baguettes and focaccia, the in-house bakery here does hearty bagel sandwiches with fillings like salmon and dill, turkey bacon and egg, grilled cheese and grilled vegetable. Desserts include death-by-carbs option bagel ice cream sandwich with homemade vanilla ice cream and fruit, nut and chocolate chips. Just like their predecessors at Lab SG, they're pretty big on dessert drinks like the earl grey float that sees a dollop of their home made early grey ice cream on a root beer or Coke, virgin lychee mojitos and caramel apple fizz.

This includes breakfast foods such as homemade granola, fruit and yoghurt bowls with walnut crumble and agave nectar; speciality grilled sandwiches such as Prosciutto & Truffle on Ciabatta and Watercress Egg Aioli on homemade Brioche. Almost everything on the menu is made in small batches and made from scratch – from the artisanal breads to the aioli, tapenade, jam and chutney, to the cakes and pastries; it is Plain Vanilla’s philosophy to present heartfelt comfort food made in the philosophy of home-cooking. They focus on refining classic, familiar flavours, eschewing artificial ingredients and preservatives, relying instead on the natural flavours of the best and freshest ingredients.
The 800 sq. ft. café sits 20 people comfortably around communal tables designed by Nathan Yong - of FOLKS FURNITURE and co-founder of GRAFUNKT – in collaboration with the IGC design team. Envisioned as a little botanical oasis nestled in the heart of the store, the café is capped by lush ferns and greenery from local florist Triceratops.
At a glance, the synergy between In Good Company and its collaborators – Plain Vanilla Bakery, illustrator and artist Kuanth, Hoiming, Magpie, Math Paper Press, Nathan Yong, and Triceratops – seems as much about sharing a like-minded philosophy as the coming together of a creative clan. & why is a new cafe inspired by the delicatessens of New York.
& why aims to diversify the available styles of cuisines that are Halal in Singapore, as up till only recently, the selection has been quite limited to mostly regional culinary offerings. The food and drinks they serve are all Halal. Everything is prepared the Halal way and they are fully Muslim-owned.
It is called & why... as a play on New York's initials and the ellipsis are there for you to continue it with your own ideas. It is to signify an interaction between the cafe and you, a two-way street.
& why serves cuisine that is premium on the palate yet filling and fulfilling for the appetite, such as sandwiches and salads. The mocktails and brewed coffee at & why... are also refined and cater to delicate tastes. All their breads and pastries are baked in-house by their chefs.

Mad About Dolce: Creamy Café Dolce tainted with hazelnut chocolate bringing out its richness. Could be a favourite for those with a sweet tooth.
Ladies should enjoy the Mademoiselle drink; a watermelon base fused together with Lussory white and a dash of lemonade soda to provide a refreshing sensation.
The good people of Selfish Gene Café (SGC) are proud to announce the opening of Selfish Gene Patisserie (SGP). Located on level 2 above the café at 40 Craig Road, SGP is a patisserie with a difference – they serve plated desserts focusing on familiar flavours with modern presentation.
During the conceptualisation of SGP, their challenge was to present themselves in a new improved concept, but yet to retain their core culinary philosophy of homemade, quality food that appeals not only to the palate but also to a sense of familiarity. Finally, they decided to develop their core strength in making things from scratch and move their existing pastry preparation upstairs. In doing so, everything seemed to fall into place and SGP was born. SGP will operate independently from SGC as the concept and style of service differs. SGP will offer table service and present more interaction between the patisserie and customer.
After several months of testing and recipe development, SGP is proud to present seven different plated desserts. The desserts menu is ordered in increasing intensity of flavour starting with the light & fruity and leading to the more intense & robust ones. Some of the mentionable desserts include a Japanese inspired Soya which harmonises soya ingredients with tofu cheesecake, red beans, homemade mochi, red miso caramel and green tea ice-iream. There is also the Ginger featuring warm candied ginger pudding topped with a luscious sticky toffee and accompanied caramel ice-cream. All cakes and ice-creams/sorbets are made in-house.
SGP will serve as an event space for private/corporate events, meetings and product launches. In addition, they hope to be able to do pop-up dinners with guest chefs in the near future. And so, selfish Gene continues to evolve.
