Homegrown fragrance brand, Scent by SIX, has launched an open- concept scent bar at Jem mall in Jurong East. With its two other boutiques located at Bugis Junction and 313@Somerset in central Singapore, this new presence in the west enables Scent by SIX to reach out to a wider community.
In conjunction with its foray into the western shopping enclave, Scent by SIX will be introducing a new scent collection: Sleep, Returns. The calming scent is infused with fragrance intelligence, ‘Sleep Accord’, by Japanese Fragrance House, Takasago. Data from a global study of ‘Sleep Accord’ indicated a positive experience for its panellists, with improvement in sleep quality and duration.
With a prime spot at the entrance of Jem mall on the first level, the new scent bar welcomes shoppers to discover its collection of home and personal fragrances created over the past years since its launch in July 2016.
To optimise the customer experience, touch points were identified for an ergonomic flow. In terms of the ambience, the idea of wellness and care is similarly showcased in the new space as it was at the 313@Somerset boutique. The appointed designer, Clara Yee, Creative Director of In The Wild explains the design concept: “The new scent bar by Scent by Six is an open and fluid space with a porous boundary, allowing guests to stumble upon and wander through the space that sits at a busy intersection at the entrance of Jem. The palette of soft sandstone pink, textured stucco walls, and luxurious brass, balance earthly tactile comfort with a touch of sophistication. Just like the flagship Somerset boutique, the scent bar at Jem exudes a home-like hosting experience, creating islands over which to have conversations, linger and discover the scents.”
While the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has brought upon challenges such as the temporary closure of Jem mall in May, which delayed renovations for the scent bar, Jason Lee, Founder of Scent by SIX remains optimistic. “There is no better time to take the leap of faith and expand the business than now. Moving forward, running a business in this climate will be the new normal. We have complete faith that our government will manage the situation well and continue to support local businesses sustainably,” he opines.
In keeping with its mission to use its scents to heal, soothe and delight one’s mental wellness, Scent by SIX introduces its latest scent, Sleep, Returns. The design for this collection draws inspiration from the Six of Swords tarot card. It depicts a state of transition, leaving behind what was familiar and moving towards calmer waters by moving forward. “Sleep is a fundamental human need and a good night’s rest is essential to maintaining our mental health. We understand the struggles of those who are not having a good night’s sleep. With our new scent collection, we bring them hope for better sleep,” says Jason.
As it did last year with its uplifting scent, Hikaru, Scent by SIX will be donating S$10,000 from the sales of Sleep, Returns to the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH). Through this partnership with SAMH, Scent by SIX aims to raise awareness of mental health issues, particularly depression, and the importance of taking care of one’s mental wellness. The funds will be donated to the association to help individuals with mental health issues.
In August 2021, Singapore Airlines announced its collaboration with Scent by SIX in creating its signature scent, Batik Flora. The scent includes floral notes from six flowers in SIA’s batik motif: aquatic ginger, common dianella, seashore purslane, simpoh lak, utania nervosa and white kopsia. Batik Flora by Singapore Airlines will be progressively introduced at key customer-facing SIA locations from October 2021, starting with the SIA Service Centre at ION Orchard. Customers will also be able to enjoy this signature scent at SIA’s redeveloped SilverKris Lounge at Singapore Changi Airport terminal three. Batik Flora will be available in a collection of reed diffusers, pillow mists, and an eau de toilette fragrance. The collection will be sold exclusively on KrisShop.com from October 2021.

In commitment to its new direction of using scents to heal, soothe and delight one’s mental wellness, homegrown fragrance brand, SIX, has launched a multi-sensorial boutique at 313@Somerset. Designed by local artists Clara Yee and Gerald Leow from In The Wild, the boutique is a representation of Founder, Jason Lee’s vision of creating a sanctuary for customers to take a break from their busy lives.
Covering a space of 550 square feet, the boutique is designed to enhance the customer’s journey through visual, audio and olfactory stimuli. The allure starts from the exterior façade of the boutique enhanced with SIX’s signature ambient scent to pique the interest of passers-by. As they step into the space, elements of the interiors emanate a gentle calming vibe, complemented with a curation of spa- esque music to lull them into a state of bliss. “We invite our guests to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy mall into our sanctuary; to take a breather, unwind and just be – in the moment,” says Jason.
Likening the interiors to that of a cave, Clara Yee, lead designer and Co-Founder of In The Wild, explains the design inspiration: “The space references the contours of a cave through a variety of textures and an earthy calming palette of natural materials. The ideas of wellness and care are displayed with the stucco walls of sandstone pink, pistachio greens and soft, rounded edges. The new SIX boutique is designed to be an intimate respite to soothe the senses.”
Zoned into areas of ‘consciousness’ and ‘memories’, the space is a hybrid of retail and homelike hosting experience, with art objects to discover throughout. Like a personal collection, each item within the space, from the textiles to the floating forms are like responses to memories and reflection. “To achieve harmony and bring positivity into our lives, we sometimes need to tap into our deeper senses. The artworks loosely reference Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, inviting us to be free from relying on just our five senses,” Clara expounds. The accomplished young designer and entrepreneur made waves when she was recognised by Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2016. Clara was also the artistic designer behind Singapore Tourism Board’s Singapore: Inside Out, an international multi-disciplinary showcase of Singaporean talents in the fields of design, music, literature, food and performing arts.
Since its inception in July 2016, SIX has been making strides within the scenting industry with an expanding collection of fine fragrances, DIY scent kits, and a home scenting range. From a humble collection of three scents (123 Tribeca, 1724 Puka and 27 ̊F Biei), SIX now boasts two product lines. They include the SIX home scenting collection of diffusers, nebulizers and pure essential oils, two additional scents (Eclat and 2065 UJONG), as well as a DIY scent kit.
On the commercial end, SIX has been undertaking ambient scenting, creating bespoke labels and conducting scenting workshops for luxury brand names such as Piaget, Lexus and Ritz Carlton. In 2019, SIX established its first standalone boutique at the newly revamped Funan Mall and was commissioned for its ambient scenting. The same year, the SIX product line was included in Singapore Airline’s Kris Shop catalogue. SIX was also commissioned by our national carrier to create a bespoke scent that was used on perfume tags boxed inside purchases. Later that year, SIX collaborated with Eu Yan Sang to create the world’s first Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perfume, using traditional herbs.
In 2020, SIX launched its second standalone boutique at Bugis Junction. In view of the work-from-home phenomenon following the Covid-19 outbreak, SIX created the uplifting, Awakening home diffusers, where ten percent of sales proceeds were donated to the Courage Fund by Community Chest. SIX also launched a new line of essential oils and disinfectant sprays. In November 2020, SIX partnered with the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH) to raise awareness on mental health issues, with the creation of the Hikaru collection. Ten dollars from each product sold, with a total targeted amount of S$10,000, will be donated to the association in support of its ongoing efforts to help individuals with mental health issues.

With the closure of its flagship tze char eatery at Hillview Avenue in June this year leaving fans scrambling into the city for their New Ubin fix; an upscale restaurant in the city centre CHIJMES cluster and a hotel restaurant in Zhongshan Park didn’t feel quite the same. Plans were already set in motion by its proprietors, the Pang family, to find a new space that could house the brand’s signature tze char eatery concept. The components were unique to its plight – an amalgamation of years of moving around oft offbeat locations, most famous of which were its Sixth Avenue, Sin Ming Industrial Estate and its latest Hillview Avenue incarnations.
The formula is as bewildering as it is exact. An off-the-beaten-path location accessible at best by car, far flung from the city and tucked away into the forgotten crevices of Singapore. It’d count the likes of paint shops and auto- repair businesses as its neighbours, and its cuisine best enjoyed in a nondescript outdoor canteen setting that has no business serving choice rib-eye cuts, kaya toast on baguette with French butter, or premium Bordeaux in Riedel glasses – but do so anyway. Here, New Ubin’s brand of rustic roots and kampong essence, which it serves its ‘Truly Singaporean’ cuisine with, fares exceedingly.
Today, that recipe has been exacted to a tee, and with all previous moves, comes with its own set of upgrades. Located on the ground floor of Space@Tampines, a commercial property along Tampines Industrial Crescent flanked by furniture showrooms and inflatable air dancers, is the 5,700 square feet New Ubin Village. The University Cultural Centre (UCC) at National University of Singapore (NUS) has re-opened with more than a fresh coat of paint - with state-of-the-art production infrastructure, a new atrium and new spaces for bringing the arts to the campus, creating opportunities for creative expression, discovery and exchange.
The University Cultural Centre's $20 million renovation lasted six months.
A new multi-purpose atrium space that can hold 120 seated or 220 standing has been added to the arts complex on Kent Ridge Crescent. From Sunday, 14 January 2018, three new roads in Bidadari estate will be partially opened to serve the upcoming developments in the estate. The new roads are Bidadari Park Drive, Alkaff Crescent & Woodleigh Link
With the opening of the new roads, three new signalised junctions will also be commissioned in the area to regulate vehicular and pedestrian movement.
Among the three new roads, Bidadari Park Drive road is a major road that will serve as the main transportation spine of Bidadari. It will eventually traverse the full length of the new estate, from Bartley Road to Upper Serangoon Road, serving residents throughout the estate.
Running alongside Bidadari Park Drive is Bidadari Greenway, which extends from the northern to the southern end of the estate. Featuring lush greenery, the 1.6km-long Bidadari Greenway will form a “green spine” connecting the housing developments to the Bidadari Park. It will be lined with rest spots, commercial and social communal facilities, creating opportunities for more community interaction. Pedestrian and cycling paths running through the greenway will also enable residents to walk and cycle seamlessly in the estate.
