Gallop House No. 5 (Atbara) is Singapore’s oldest surviving colonial era or black-and-white bungalow. Built in 1898, it now houses the Forest Discovery Centre @ OCBC Arboretum, which showcases Singapore’s forest ecosystems, and highlights the importance of conserving them. Through a series of interpretive and interactive displays, visitors can enjoy a bird's eye view of Singapore’s diverse forests, and learn about the Gardens’ historical role in conserving them. Highlights include a photographic installation of forest trees, family-friendly displays and videos featuring three distinctive forest habitats found in Singapore, and their unique flora and fauna.
The Forest Discovery Centre @ OCBC Arboretum will also host the Singapore Botanic Gardens’ Tropical Forest Ecology Research programme. This programme reprises a historical role for the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which dates back to the late 1800s. One of the Gardens’ early superintendents, Nathaniel Cantley, was tasked to survey the forests in the Straits Settlement in 1882. His report led to the demarcation of the first forest reserves in Singapore in 1884, in order to prevent the ecology and climate from further deteriorating.
Complementing the Forest Discovery Centre is the OCBC Arboretum, which is a first-of-its-kind high-tech arboretum in Southeast Asia. Opened in October 2019, the arboretum plays an important role in the Gardens’ conservation work, housing and displaying the Gardens’ growing collection of rare dipterocarps.
Tengah Air Base Medical Centre (TAB MC) was conceptualised as the next-generation Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) Medical Centre, incorporating technology-enabled efficiency improvements as well as extensive medical centre process re-design to enhance patient experience and deliver high quality medical care to our airmen and women.
Its infrastructure was designed to support a full spectrum of medical operations, including pandemic outbreak response or mass casualty scenarios. It was also designated as a medical innovation testbed for novel concepts and initiatives aimed at improving healthcare service delivery. TAB MC's official opening will lead the way with technology-enabled efficiency improvements and a keen focus on service quality and patient experience for future RSAF medical centres.
Taking lessons learnt from previous experiences with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and H1N1 influenza, the TAB MC incorporated pandemic-specific infrastructural and technological features. This forward thinking spring-loaded TAB MC's medical response following the COVID-19 outbreak.
A 5.6m high waterfall takes centre stage in the newly-rejuvenated Yunnan Garden at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore that now seamlessly integrates with the Chinese Heritage Centre and an expanded Nanyang Lake. Comprising themed mini gardens and nature trails, the new space is now even more inviting for students, staff and nearby Jurong residents to visit and explore the various scenic spots it has to offer.
Built in the 1950s, the Yunnan Garden was a key attraction of the Nanyang University campus, the land on which NTU Singapore is now situated. With the just-completed revitalisation effort, the Yunnan Garden is seamlessly integrated with the Chinese Heritage Centre and an expanded Nanyang Lake. More than 1,000 new trees comprising over 80 species have been planted in the Garden, enriching its biodiversity. Other enrichments include a new 5.6-metre-tall waterfall, themed mini gardens, a boardwalk, a new stormwater management system, and Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the Garden.
The result is a 9-hectare heritage precinct – bigger than 12 soccer fields – that preserves the Garden’s legacy while enriching it as an educational and recreation hub, making it a go-to place not just for the NTU community, but also for the residents who live in the wider Jurong neighbourhood.
NTU Students’ Union President Bryan Michael Chiew Sen, a second-year Public Policy and Global Affairs student from the School of Social Sciences, said: “The new amenities in the Yunnan Garden are a refreshing addition to what we traditionally know as a heritage area with historical significance. With the rejuvenation, the Garden is now an invigorating break away from the classroom, and an attractive spot for students to have social gatherings. The spruced up greenery makes the Garden good for deep conversations and long strolls, which I’m certain will be beneficial for students’ mental well-being.”
Learning about plants and the environment is also part and parcel of a walk in the Yunnan Garden, which is designed around sustainability principles. The plant varietals in the mini gardens have been carefully chosen for their educational values, be it for their use as renewable energy sources or as sustainable alternatives to plastics, or their ability to remove pollutants from the air, soil and water.
The water features in the Garden are designed to create a stormwater management system that purifies rainwater before releasing it into larger ponds and reservoirs through drains and canals.
Integrating these lessons into the Yunnan Garden experience is part of NTU’s commitment to raising awareness about environmental sustainability.

Climate change is anticipated to worsen the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue. It facilitates the spread of mosquito vectors, viruses and epidemics. There is thus a need to continually innovate and design sustainable solutions to deal with these environmental public health challenges. Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) has established a new, highly automated facility that will allow researchers to eventually increase their production capacity of Wolbachia-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquitoes by more than 10-fold, compared to its previous production facility.
This boost in capacity is critical for NEA’s plans to scale up Project Wolbachia – Singapore, in preparation for future deployment of the novel vector control technology. The new facility, located at Techplace II in Ang Mo Kio, was officially opened on 2 December 2019 by Dr. Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR).
NEA’s Project Wolbachia involves the release of male Wolbachia-Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to suppress the urban Aedes aegypti mosquito population. Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue, chikungunya and Zika in Singapore. When the released male Wolbachia-Aedes aegypti mosquitoes mate with urban female Aedes aegyptimosquitoes that do not carry Wolbachia, the resulting eggs do not hatch. Over time, continued releases of male Wolbachia-Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are expected to bring about a gradual reduction in the urban Aedes aegypti mosquito population, and hence lower the risk of dengue transmission. Read more about this project here.

This new 2-hectare test facility will support the Centre of Excellence for Testing & Research of AVs – NTU (CETRAN), which was launched on 1 Aug 2016 to spearhead the development of testing requirements for AVs. Together with CETRAN and its partners, LTA will work towards developing the necessary standards and testing regimes for the safe deployment of AVs on our public roads. As there are no existing international test standards or international certification bodies for AVs, CETRAN will anchor Singapore’s position as an industry leader in supporting the testing and eventual widespread deployment of AVs.
Jointly developed by LTA, NTU and JTC, the centre in the Jurong Innovation District will be managed by the Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERI@N).
In order to be integrated onto public roads, AVs need to be tested on their communication with other vehicles, road infrastructure as well as dispatch and routing systems. To facilitate the testing of AV navigation controls in a real-world environment, the test centre is designed to replicate the different elements of Singapore’s roads, with common traffic schemes, road infrastructure, and traffic rules. The circuit also features a rain simulator and flood zone to test AVs’ navigation abilities under different weather conditions.
To monitor the progress of AV testing, LTA has installed a network of seven 360-degrees close circuit television (CCTV) cameras at strategic locations across the test centre. Real-time footage from these cameras will be streamed back to the AutOnomous VehicLe MonItoring and EValuation SystEm (OLIVE) at LTA’s Intelligent Transport Systems Centre. Through OLIVE, LTA will be able to integrate data from AVs and the CCTVs to evaluate the readiness of AVs for public use. Please refer to the Annex for the Test Centre’s layout and detailed features.

Pixel Studios by The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) is the first dedicated facility in Singapore to spur the next generation of digital content creators and media professionals to explore innovative ways of content creation and storytelling.
Spearheaded by IMDA and managed by Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), the 25,000 sq ft space located at the Pixel building in one-north, is one of IMDA’s PIXEL (Promising Innovations and Experiential Learning) innovation spaces.
By providing a full suite of facilities and resources backed by capability development programmes with industry partners, Pixel Studios aims to build a community of creators and create opportunities for collaboration across the creative ecosystem.
Collaborative areas, production and technology tools at Pixel Studios will support content creators to experiment and innovate with content and technology. Facilities at Pixel Studios include thematic spaces that can double up as sets for filming and production purposes. For example, meeting and seminar rooms are dressed up as a vintage diner, a kopitiam-themed area with a stage for meeting and presentations, a bar-themed area, a kitchen studio, a relaxation corner and screening area, hot desking spaces, and make-up and changing rooms.
The space will also cater to a larger community of game start-ups. They will enjoy more physical space, with an approximate forty per cent increase in floor area compared to the former Games Solution Centre’s premises at Block 71.
Production and technology tools to support experimentation will include a green screen studio equipped with professional video equipment, editing tools such as video post-editing, recording and audio post-production suites; VR/AR gear, as well as game engines.
To grow the community, digital content creators and professionals interested in creating experimental content or pilots, are welcome to explore and use the space by submitting a proposal on the official website, www.IMPIXEL.sg.

Designer Thomas Heatherwick has completed a university building in Singapore made up of 12 towers that resemble giant parsnips.
London-based Heatherwick Studio collaborated with local firm CPG Consultants on the Learning Hub, a new eight-storey teaching facility at Nanyang Technological University.
To avoid creating "miles of corridors linking box-like lecture rooms", the building was designed as a cluster of tapered towers surrounding an expansive atrium. The idea was to combine learning facilities with social spaces including balconies, gardens and open-air corridors, to encourage as many opportunities for staff and student interactions as possible.
The 12 towers, which each taper inwards towards the base, accommodate a total of 56 oval classrooms. According to the designers, the non-hierarchal round shape – without any corners or obvious fronts or backs – will encourage more collaborative learning.
Clad with curved concrete panels, the towers feature irregular horizontal stripes that were created using 10 adjustable silicone moulds. This texture lends each tower the look of a root vegetable, although the designers liken the appearance with wet clay.
Balconies extend around the inside of the towers and get larger towards the top of the building, offering views into the atrium. This space is naturally ventilated, allowing air to circulate throughout.
The towers are raised off the ground on 61 angled concrete columns, each featuring an undulating surface texture, and small areas of planting surround many of them.
Meanwhile, the concrete walls surrounding the stair and elevator cores slotted between the towers have been embossed with over 700 drawings by illustrator Sara Fanelli, depicting images from science, art and literature.
The project forms part of a wider campus redevelopment for Nanyang Technological University which, with over 33,000 students, is one of Singapore's largest public universities.
The new facility in Ayer Rajah Crescent can house more than 900 employees and will be used by the company’s mobile storage R&D team in Singapore.
Named "The Shugart" after company founder Alan Shugart, the R&D centre will focus on the development of 2.5-inch small form-factor hard drives, hybrid drives, firmware, software and technologies.

Born in the year of the rabbit (which explains his choice of restaurant name), Chef Matthew has always been fascinated with cooking since young. Unlike most award-winning chefs, Chef Matthew kept his training local within At-Sunrise Global Chef Academy without any overseas apprenticeship. Similar to Heston Blumenthal, he picks up ideas from his travel experiences and interaction with people.
A combination of classic French techniques along with a touch of Asian and Singaporean flavours, Chef Matthew creates seasonal menus inspired by the 7 characteristics of ‘ENSOPHI’: Exotic, Nostalgia, Soil, Ocean, Pristine, Heritage, Impression. Each element represents a poetic and artistic expression of his dish.
Sourced from little-known boutique vineyards from all over the world, wine labels to pair with each course range from familiar regions like Barossa Valley, Australia and Bordeaux, France to newer regions like Nahe, Germany and Colchagua Valley, Chile. Watch as resident mixologist Aidil shakes up house crafted cocktails and international favourites to kick-start your meal. Enjoy Happy Hour specials and live music from Thursday to Saturday evenings.
With Chef Matthew’s forte in creating and designing, he made a full renovation to the space. The intimate 30-seater indoor dining room is formed around a semi-circle with floor to ceiling glass windows for a 180° view of the city. Complete with an open kitchen concept, diode branches of stars imprinted in the ceiling, and Chef Matthew’s sketches and art sculptures collected from his travels, the stage is set for a gastronomical and artistic experience. The outdoor rooftop terrace seats 26 but offers ample standing space for large-scale events in a lush alfresco garden setting. Chef Matthew has plans to set up a vertical garden around the steel façade. Sip some wine, savour the food and soak in the ambience. The Rabbit Stash offers a multi-sensory dining adventure with a feast for all senses.

The good people of Selfish Gene Café (SGC) are proud to announce the opening of Selfish Gene Patisserie (SGP). Located on level 2 above the café at 40 Craig Road, SGP is a patisserie with a difference – they serve plated desserts focusing on familiar flavours with modern presentation.
During the conceptualisation of SGP, their challenge was to present themselves in a new improved concept, but yet to retain their core culinary philosophy of homemade, quality food that appeals not only to the palate but also to a sense of familiarity. Finally, they decided to develop their core strength in making things from scratch and move their existing pastry preparation upstairs. In doing so, everything seemed to fall into place and SGP was born. SGP will operate independently from SGC as the concept and style of service differs. SGP will offer table service and present more interaction between the patisserie and customer.
After several months of testing and recipe development, SGP is proud to present seven different plated desserts. The desserts menu is ordered in increasing intensity of flavour starting with the light & fruity and leading to the more intense & robust ones. Some of the mentionable desserts include a Japanese inspired Soya which harmonises soya ingredients with tofu cheesecake, red beans, homemade mochi, red miso caramel and green tea ice-iream. There is also the Ginger featuring warm candied ginger pudding topped with a luscious sticky toffee and accompanied caramel ice-cream. All cakes and ice-creams/sorbets are made in-house.
SGP will serve as an event space for private/corporate events, meetings and product launches. In addition, they hope to be able to do pop-up dinners with guest chefs in the near future. And so, selfish Gene continues to evolve.
