Olivia Burton take inspiration from vintage and catwalk trends to create a range of stylish and covetable accessories. Olivia Burton pieces are feminine, fun and collectable. Its concept store is now open at ION Orchard.
The British accessories brand was founded by best friends and ex-fashion buyers Jemma and Lesa, who met on their first day at the London College of Fashion. They bonded over a love of design, a passion to start their own business and a mutual struggle to find a watch that they wanted to wear.
Lovers of vintage, the pair would trawl through antique markets to find timepieces, but, whilst beautiful, the cogs would often stop and start. After graduation, the girls went on to pursue successful careers in fashion buying, clocking up time at diverse fashion brands such as Topshop, ASOS and Selfridges. All the while, the idea of going it alone was gathering momentum until the day in 2011 when Jemma and Lesa made the leap, quit their jobs and set about creating their own beautiful, unique watches from the kitchen table.
Named after Lesa’s great aunt whose spirited approach and energy was a huge inspiration to the girls, Olivia Burton debuted its first collection in September 2012. Its covetable, collectable styles, which now include a striking jewellery line-up, are inspired by vintage finds and the latest catwalk trends.
Designs are brought to life at the brand’s pretty East London studio, where Jemma and Lesa work closely with their small team to ensure every piece is tweaked to perfection. Think intricate hand-illustrations, beautiful references to nature and must-have colour palettes.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has launched Southeast Asia’s first-of-its-kind advanced maritime energy test facility.
The S$8 million research facility aims to be a platform for scientists and engineers to develop innovative eco-friendly maritime technologies, such as scrubbers and alternative energy sources. Scrubbers are devices that curb harmful ship emissions.
Such clean energy solutions are aimed at delivering cost savings and competitive advantages, as well as enhance the reputation of maritime companies for championing sustainable technologies.
For example, shipping may be recognised as the most fuel efficient mode of freight transportation, but it is also known to use fuel which emits harmful atmospheric pollutants. The facility, called the Maritime Energy Test Bed, will conduct research and development in areas such as alternative sources of energy, fuel additives to increase energy efficiency and technologies for cleaner emissions.
To achieve this, the 1,500 square metre facility comes equipped with a 1.5 megawatt diesel ship engine, which can run on most of the conventional liquid fuel types for energy research. It will also be installed with advanced sensors and monitoring devices to facilitate research in energy storage, noise pollution and waste heat recovery.

The latest dining addition to Tiong Bahru is House of Peranakan Petit, a modern and intimate Peranakan setting along Eng Hoon Street - a former Peranakan enclave. Established by the House of Peranakan Group of restaurants, this third branch is borne from a desire to offer top notch Peranakan heritage food in an area that has forgotten its Peranakan roots and inundated with hipster cafes.
Established in Katong in the 1980s, the House of Peranakan Group of restaurant is a pioneer in Nonya cuisine, managed by a pure Peranakan family for more than 30 years. Inspired by his mother’s culinary skills, Bob Seah wanted to share his family’s culinary culture with others. He established Peranakan Inn in the 1980s, one of the earliest Nonya restaurants in Singapore housed in a charming pre-war Peranakan shophouse built in 1937, which is still serving piping hot Nonya cuisine in claypots today.
Over the years, the restaurants have received accolades from the Asian Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. It has hosted distinguished guests from past Presidents to overseas dignitaries. The most recent VIP was Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of the Kingdom of Thailand.
Chef and owner, Bob Seah, is 75 years and a serial restaurateur. He is still cooking and establishing new restaurants at this age, and he makes it a point to go to the market every morning to get the freshest ingredients for the restaurants. This is the true meaning of active ageing!
A pioneer in the Peranakan food community, Bob has created many Peranakan-inspired dishes such as Selar Sambal Fish stuffed with Rempah, Nonya Crayfish, Assam Prawns and Long Beans Sambal. He also introduced the concept of serving home-cooked Nonya food in claypots 30 years ago!
Proudly conceptualised by Chef and Owner, Bob Seah - a fourth generation Baba who had watched his Nonya mother cook, and his daughter Bee Leng, – the menu at House of Peranakan Petit includes traditional Nonya dishes such as Ayam Buah Keluak, Nonya Chap Chye, Garam Assam Fish and Itek Sioh. In addition to that, Bob has created several Peranakan-inspired dishes such as Scallop Lemak, Crayfish Nonya Mee, Bob’s Pork Bun and Curry Crayfish.
Are you a fan of the reality TV show MasterChef? Well, the inaugural winner of New Zealand MasterChef, Brett McGregor, came all the way to House of Peranakan Cuisine to learn from Bob how to cook the Babi Assam. They are probably the only Nonya restaurant in Singapore that serves this rare and unique dish of belly pork flavoured with belimbing (sour fruit), beanpaste and traditional spices.
There is a juxtaposition of traditional and modern touches to the restaurant. Peranakan furniture and antiques are set amidst Peranakan hues of turquoise and white. To showcase and support Peranakan art, the owners are collaborating with young Peranakan artist, Carolyn Law, to display her Peranakan-inspired art in the restaurant.
