The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) urban training facilities built in the 1990s comprise clusters of low-level buildings replicating traditional shop houses and provision shops, without performance measuring instrumentation. Up to the early 2000s, these facilities had met SAF's training requirements and served the SAF well. Going forward, with more built-up areas, the Next Gen SAF requires better urban training facilities to deal with the new security threats and challenges that Singapore now faces. This need for SAFTI City (The Singapore Armed Forces Training Institute) was announced by the Minister for Defence at the Committee of Supply Debate in 2017.
Scheduled to open progressively from 2023, SAFTI City, jointly developed by the Singapore Army and the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), is designed to meet the evolving defence needs of the SAF, and to support training for a wider range of operations from peace to war. These operations include homeland security, counter-terrorism, and disaster relief operations. Its infrastructure will provide a realistic and challenging training environment for soldiers.
Built on current military training area, the key features of SAFTI City are:
a) Realistic and Challenging Training Environment. An integrated Transport Hub comprising a bus interchange, an MRT station with multiple surface exits, high-rise interconnected buildings, dense building clusters, multiple road networks, as well as other public amenities such as shopping centres, will allow for a realistic and challenging training environment.
b) Configurable Buildings and Changeable Road Networks. Built-in swing panels allow traffic flow and buildings to be configured to training needs. This will allow soldiers to encounter a different layout of buildings and street landscape each time they train in SAFTI City.
c) Smart Technology. SAFTI City will also be a smart city, leveraging smart technologies to enhance training effectiveness and soldiers' learning experience. Smart technologies include:
(1) Targets with Shoot-back Capability. Soldiers and smart targets will be equipped with sensors for monitoring and data capturing. When smart targets are engaged, they can respond by shooting back and retreating from the location.
(2) Battlefield Effects. Battlefield effects, which include the use of smoke and blast simulators, will be used to enhance training realism.
(3) Data Analytics. Battlefield instrumentations and video cameras will be employed to track the troops' real-time actions. Furthermore, training performance will be collated and processed by a data analytics system to provide accurate feedback to the troops on their individual and team performances. With gamification integrated into the training and detailed individual feedback, individual soldiers and teams can benchmark their scores against each other, motivating them to improve further. These technological improvements enable the SAF to train more efficiently and effectively.
Phase 1 of SAFTI City will have over 70 buildings, including three 12-storey blocks, simulated underground facilities, and urban training structures. With a total estimated gross floor area of 107,000 m2, phase 1 of SAFTI City will be able to accommodate brigade-level training.

The Mobilisation and Equipping Centre (MEC) in Selarang Camp houses everything that an NS unit needs to be ready for operations within hours of being recalled.
The use of automation reduces wait-times for NSmen. In addition, the Selarang MEC has humidity controlled storage facilities which ensure that equipment are well-maintained and ready for use.
At MEC, NSmen will use the self-service kiosks for in-processing and out-processing. All they have to do is scan their identification cards and they will be given their mobilisation slips with the equipping details. Read more about the reporting prcoess here.
Selarang MEC also adopts green technologies such as these solar panels - they utilise renewable energy as an alternate power source to the MEC.
Apart from this, light intensity controls and motion sensors are installed at common areas such as toilets and staircases to save electricity.
To reduce water usage, a dedicated storage container with a filtration system is also built within the MEC to channel used water into the container for recycling.
Leveraging on science and technology, the CESP brings together subject-matter experts from sport science, nutrition, psychology, physiotherapy and human factors engineering to strengthen our soldiers' fitness, mental resilience, injury management and rehabiliation, as well as integration of soldier-level systems. In short, CESP will work towards making our soldiers “Soldier Strong”.
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officially opened The Island Defence Training Institute, a new training institute at Clementi Camp on 31st July where up to 18,000 active soldiers and national servicemen (NSmen) will be trained in counter-terrorism and homeland security.
A further 15,000 personnel every year will undergo training for other island defence roles.
The training will focus on further developing individual skill sets acquired from the SAF's current urban operations training, and adapting them to homeland security operations. The training will cover: (i) scenario-based simulation and live-firing for homeland security operations; (ii) search and arrest procedures to be undertaken by SAF personnel; (iii) knowledge of legal powers and rights of private defence; and (iv) retractable truncheon drills. NS units will undergo refresher training during their In-Camp Training (ICT) so that their skills are kept current and they can be readily deployed for operations.
To ensure that training is realistic and effective, the IDTI will leverage training technology such as Judgmental Video Simulation Training at the Infantry Gunnery and Tactical Simulator, which has been updated to include multiple homeland security operations scenarios. Conducted in 50m ranges, this training puts soldiers through simulated homeland security operations scenarios, and exercises their ability to decide to shoot or not depending on whether the target is friend or foe. This increases operational readiness by allowing soldiers to exercise their thinking and decision-making processes in a highly immersive environment, and better prepares them to manage complex homeland security operations.
Orangetheory Fitness originated in Fort Lauderdale, USA. Since the establishment in 2010, Orangetheory Fitness has over 700 studios worldwide and now opens a studio every day.
Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) has selected Singapore as one of the premier and emerging markets for the Orangetheory Fitness workout. With 10 studios set to open nationwide and having most of them in the prime locations, their first studio is now at Martin Road, Robertson Quay.
OTF specializes in heart rate based interval group-training that allows individuals to continue burning calories up to 36 hours post-workout, something they call the “Orange Effect”.
Each OTF workout is divided into 2 groups, starting with either cardio or strength, halfway through, everybody switches. All participants wear a heartrate monitor with live results displayed around the facilities; which allows coaches to modify and customize the exercises. This ensures that all OTF workouts are suitable for anyone with different fitness and exercise background.
Be sure to expect a fun, uplifting and challenging 60 minutes full body workout that would improve your endurance, strength and power!
Ritual has branched out to the CBD area and their 3rd outlet is now at Robinson Road.
They have taken away all the excuses for not going to the gym. All you need to do is find half an hour in your busy day and show up at one of their premises.
Ritual offers High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) which combines strength training with cardio, allowing you to train the entire body in a mere 20-minute session. 20 minutes of HIIT has been repeatedly shown to be far more effective than an hour of consistent effort on a bike or a treadmill. If you can just ask a little bit more from your body than it can handle, you can raise your metabolic rate for up to 48 hours after your training session.
They've got 4 levels of progression, so whether you're a high level athlete or stepping into a gym for the first time, they've got you covered. There's no 'one size fits all' when it comes to fitness, so their coaches are trained to adjust the daily programs according to your specific needs.
At Ritual, they focus on form over reps, because not only will you get more out of doing 5 perfect reps than 15 poorly-executed ones, you' re far less likely to injure yourself in the process. With just 10 paxs per group session, you'll always get high-quality coaching with lots of personal attention, within a fun, supportive environment.

PowerLounge Robinson is South East Asia's first fitness studio to use wireless EMS technology from Germany in their personal training programmes.
EMS or Electo Muscular Stimulation is a total body workout with body current. In this context, it might be helpful to know that our muscles contract through electric impulses (bioelectronics) in normal state. The EMS training makes use of this effect.
Elite athletes use EMS in addition to their training in order to improve their strength and speed. It can also be used for body shaping through muscle formation and catabolism of fat, stimulation of metabolism and tightening of connective tissue.
EMS full-body workout activates over 90% of the muscles fibers at the same time during each contraction! As oppose to conventional weight training, deeper muscles are demanded, as well. That enhances intra- and intercellular coordination. Therefore, the training produces an effect much more rapidly and effectively than conventional weight training. The training effect with EMS training can be up 18 times better than with conventional weight training. Best of all, it only takes 20 minutes per session.

Decathlon has also set up a huge 36,000 square metre warehouse in Jurong West in September.
