Singapore's eighth MRT line, the Cross Island Line (CRL) will be our longest fully underground line at more than 50 kilometres long. It will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, western, and north-eastern corridors, connecting major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region.
When operational, it will have the highest number of interchange stations, with almost half the stations on the line being linked to existing rail stations. This means more alternative travel routes to get to your destination.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is also pleased to announce the alignment and station locations for the Cross Island Line (CRL) – Punggol Extension, which connects Pasir Ris to Punggol, providing a direct connection for commuters travelling between eastern and north-eastern Singapore.
The 7.3-kilometre extension will provide better rail connectivity and greater accessibility for those living in eastern areas such as Pasir Ris and Tampines North as well as north-eastern areas such as Punggol and Sengkang. The Punggol extension will be fully underground and comprises four stations, namely Punggol, Riviera, Elias, and Pasir Ris. Construction for the extension is expected to commence in 2022, with the stations opening by 2031.
With the CRL-Punggol Extension, Punggol residents will be able to reach Pasir Ris within 15 minutes on the MRT in future. A same journey on the bus takes around 40 minutes. It will also halve the travel time for commuters travelling from Punggol North to Loyang Industrial Area.
Constructed in three phases, the 29km long Phase 1 of the CRL (CRL1) will comprise 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. This will serve residential and industrial areas such as Loyang, Tampines, Pasir Ris, Defu, Hougang, Serangoon North and Ang Mo Kio. More than 100,000 households will benefit from CRL1, and common recreational spaces such as Changi Beach Park and Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park will also become accessible by public transport. Construction for CRL1 is expected to be completed by 2029.
The 43km Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) is Singapore’s sixth MRT line, adding 32 new stations to the existing rail network, with seven interchange stations linking the TEL to all five existing MRT lines. TEL will open in stages from end of January 2020, starting with the opening of 3 stations which are Woodlands North Station, Woodlands Station and Woodlands South Station. When fully operational by 2024, the TEL is expected to serve approximately 500,000 commuters daily in the initial years, with the figure rising to about one million commuters in the longer term.
Besides enhancing connectivity between the north, central and eastern parts of Singapore, the TEL will strengthen the resilience of the nation's rail network by providing alternative travel routes for commuters on other lines.
The TEL1 comprises one depot at Mandai and three stations, including an interchange station at Woodlands that links to the North-South Line (NSL), providing commuters in Woodlands greater accessibility and shortening their travelling time. Woodlands Station is also equipped with a Civil Defence shelter.
Passengers can look forward to new five-door, four-car trains for TEL. Trains will be running along TEL1 stations from Woodlands North to Woodlands South at frequencies of 10 minutes during peak hours and 15 minutes during off-peak hours, at the commencement of passenger service for TEL1. As ridership on TEL1 increases, the frequencies for both peak and off-peak hours will be reviewed and adjusted.
The second stage of the TEL comprises six stations from Springleaf to Caldecott, with two interchange stations at Bright Hill and Caldecott. Bright Hill station will link to the future Cross Island Line, while Caldecott station will link to the existing Circle Line.

Skyports and Volocopter have announced a cooperation to build the first mobile Volo-Port for air taxis. UK-based global vertiport owner and operator Skyports and air taxi pioneer Volocopter unveiled plans for the Volo-Port – the physical landing pads for so-called eVTOL (electric take-off and landing) – through stunning designs produced by internationally renowned agency Brandlab.
Ground-based vertiport infrastructure is critical to the success of future urban air mobility (UAM), including air taxi operations in congested cities. Construction of the first Volo-Port will be completed later this year. The partners plan to build it in Singapore for the scheduled public flight trials in the second half of 2019. A full-scale Volocopter vehicle is on display at the Greentech festival.
The Volo-Port prototype will:
Enable real-life testing of the full customer journey to perfect the passenger experience;
Showcase planned customer services, including pre-flight checks, passenger lounges and boarding procedures;
Allow practical testing of ground operations and services, including battery swaps and charging, maintenance, safety and security;
Provide the opportunity for authorities and industry regulators to interact with the infrastructure and provide feedback before they are asked to approve the final design.
Vertiports are the only physical infrastructure required for air taxis to commence operations in cities in the near future. Volo-Ports are designed to provide passengers with a seamless air taxi experience that is safe, secure, and relaxing. They will merge with their surroundings, allowing passengers and passers-by to see through the whole structure.
The LTMP 2040 report contains detailed responses to recommendations made by the LTMP Advisory Panel (LAP) in February 2019 and accepted by the Government in March 2019. These recommendations were the product of extensive public consultations led by the LAP and facilitated by LTA officers. Over 7,400 responses were received from commuters, transport workers, academia, industry partners, unions, students and interest groups over six months. Their ideas helped to shape the Panel’s nine recommendations, which were grouped under three key themes – A 45-minute City with 20-Minute Towns; Transport for All and Healthy Lives, Safer Journeys.
To realise the goal of a 45-minute city with 20-minute towns, LTA will continue investing in public transport to make journeys more seamless and convenient. By 2040, new regional hubs outside the city will also bring jobs closer to homes, thereby shortening the average time taken to travel to work. We will also continue to expand the active mobility network to facilitate first-and-last mile journeys. Overall, commuters should have more time to live, work and play.
The LTMP 2040 report unveiled several key public transport enhancements. These include the expansion of the rail network, including several new stations and rail lines which will be developed over the next two decades.
Two new MRT stations will be opened on the North South Line (NSL) by the mid-2030s. Brickland Station will be added to the NSL. Located between Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Gombak stations, it will give residents in areas such as Keat Hong, Bukit Batok West, Pavillion Park and the Brickland district in Tengah town easier access to the rail network.

Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced the full opening details of Lornie Highway. The northbound Lornie Highway towards MacRitchie Viaduct, Adam Underpass and the remaining bound of Sime Underpass will open at 3am on 19 April 2019.
The Adam Underpass will allow motorists from PIE (Tuas) heading towards PIE (Changi) to have a seamless connection onto Lornie Highway (northbound) towards MacRitchie Viaduct, while the remaining bound of Sime Underpass will bring traffic from Kheam Hock Road towards Lornie Road (northbound).
This follows the opening of one bound of the Sime Underpass, connecting motorists from Lornie Road (southbound) to Lornie Highway (southbound) and Kheam Hock Road, on 24 March 2019.
Together with the southbound Lornie Highway that was opened in October 2018, the new Lornie Highway and underpasses will improve traffic flow along Lornie Road and the PIE, and cater to expected growth in future traffic demand.

The projected daily ridership of the entire CRL is more than 600,000 in the initial years, increasing to over 1 million in the longer term.
LTA will construct the CRL in three phases. Phase 1 of the CRL (CRL1) is 29 kilometres long, and comprises 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. This will serve residential and industrial areas such as Loyang, Tampines, Pasir Ris, Defu, Hougang, Serangoon North and Ang Mo Kio. More than 100,000 households will benefit from CRL1, and common recreational spaces such as Changi Beach Park and Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park will also become more accessible by public transport. Construction for CRL1 is expected to commence in 2020 and be completed by 2029.
Engineering studies are still being conducted for the other phases of the CRL, including the two underground alignment options in the vicinity of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. LTA has consulted various stakeholders and will take all views into consideration before deciding on the final alignment. Details will be announced when ready.
With the improved connectivity, CRL1 will shorten travel times for commuters between the central, north-eastern and eastern parts of Singapore. For instance, a commuter staying at Serangoon North and working at Loyang Industrial Estate will enjoy travel time savings of up to 70%, from 75 minutes by bus today to 25 minutes on the CRL1. As with the introduction of other new rail lines, LTA will review the bus services in surrounding areas to optimise connectivity to CRL1 and the rest of the rail network.
CRL1 will connect to the East-West Line at Pasir Ris Station, North East Line at Hougang Station, North-South Line at Ang Mo Kio Station, and the upcoming Thomson-East Coast Line at Bright Hill Station. This multiplies the travel route options for many commuters’ journeys, thus enhancing the connectivity and resilience of our overall rail network.
The Founders’ Memorial station, located between Tanjong Rhu and Gardens by the Bay stations along the TEL, will improve accessibility for visitors to the Bay East Garden, where the memorial will be located. The station will also serve upcoming residential and recreational developments in the area.
The southbound section of the Lornie Highway has been completed and is now open to traffic. This section of Lornie Highway is parallel to Lornie Road and facilitates traffic flow from the existing Thomson Road/Lornie Road towards the Pan Island Expressway (PIE)/Adam Road/Farrer Road.
A new vehicular underpass constructed near the entrance of the highway will allow motorists to access the residential area along Lornie Road, while a temporary road connection near Sime Road has been constructed to connect traffic from the existing southbound Lornie Road to southbound Lornie Highway.
With the opening of southbound Lornie Highway, motorists heading towards PIE, Adam Road and Farrer Road are advised to use the new Lornie Highway to reach their destinations.

Dyson, the UK-based company best known for its cordless vacuum cleaners has chosen to build its new electric car in Singapore.
Dyson already manufactures electric motors for its other products, such as vacuum cleaners and fans, in Singapore, where it employs 1,100 people. Employee numbers in Singapore will more than double after it completes the new electric car plant.
The company will break ground on its new factory in Singapore later this year with the first car scheduled to roll off the production line in 2021.
The estimated completion of the new Punggol Coast MRT Station is slated for much earlier than the original 2030 timeline to support growing developments in Punggol North.
The developments in Punggol North includes new residential estates at Northshore District and Punggol Point District, as well as the Punggol Digital District, Singapore’s pilot Enterprise District comprising JTC Corporation’s (JTC) mixed-use developments, and the Singapore Institute of Technology’s (SIT) new campus.
Punggol Coast MRT Station (NE18) is a future underground station along the North East Line (NEL) just off Punggol Road. Expected to be completed by Year 2023, it will take over Punggol MRT/LRT Station as the northern terminus of the NEL.
From Sunday, 14 January 2018, three new roads in Bidadari estate will be partially opened to serve the upcoming developments in the estate. The new roads are Bidadari Park Drive, Alkaff Crescent & Woodleigh Link
With the opening of the new roads, three new signalised junctions will also be commissioned in the area to regulate vehicular and pedestrian movement.
Among the three new roads, Bidadari Park Drive road is a major road that will serve as the main transportation spine of Bidadari. It will eventually traverse the full length of the new estate, from Bartley Road to Upper Serangoon Road, serving residents throughout the estate.
Running alongside Bidadari Park Drive is Bidadari Greenway, which extends from the northern to the southern end of the estate. Featuring lush greenery, the 1.6km-long Bidadari Greenway will form a “green spine” connecting the housing developments to the Bidadari Park. It will be lined with rest spots, commercial and social communal facilities, creating opportunities for more community interaction. Pedestrian and cycling paths running through the greenway will also enable residents to walk and cycle seamlessly in the estate.
Singapore's first automated underground bicycle parking system, SecureMyBike is now open at Kampung Admiralty.
Designed to complement existing surface-level bicycle parking, the new facility can park over 500 bicycles in individual storage cells underground, providing shelter from the weather and preventing bicycle theft and vandalism. Parking your bicycles in SecureMyBike is easy and users can deposit or retrieve their cycling gear within a minute!

This new 2-hectare test facility will support the Centre of Excellence for Testing & Research of AVs – NTU (CETRAN), which was launched on 1 Aug 2016 to spearhead the development of testing requirements for AVs. Together with CETRAN and its partners, LTA will work towards developing the necessary standards and testing regimes for the safe deployment of AVs on our public roads. As there are no existing international test standards or international certification bodies for AVs, CETRAN will anchor Singapore’s position as an industry leader in supporting the testing and eventual widespread deployment of AVs.
Jointly developed by LTA, NTU and JTC, the centre in the Jurong Innovation District will be managed by the Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERI@N).
In order to be integrated onto public roads, AVs need to be tested on their communication with other vehicles, road infrastructure as well as dispatch and routing systems. To facilitate the testing of AV navigation controls in a real-world environment, the test centre is designed to replicate the different elements of Singapore’s roads, with common traffic schemes, road infrastructure, and traffic rules. The circuit also features a rain simulator and flood zone to test AVs’ navigation abilities under different weather conditions.
To monitor the progress of AV testing, LTA has installed a network of seven 360-degrees close circuit television (CCTV) cameras at strategic locations across the test centre. Real-time footage from these cameras will be streamed back to the AutOnomous VehicLe MonItoring and EValuation SystEm (OLIVE) at LTA’s Intelligent Transport Systems Centre. Through OLIVE, LTA will be able to integrate data from AVs and the CCTVs to evaluate the readiness of AVs for public use. Please refer to the Annex for the Test Centre’s layout and detailed features.
The new Tuas Bus Terminal, located along Tuas West Drive is integrated with Tuas MRT Depot, sitting atop the depot building for more productive use of land, and has access ramps for buses leading to Tuas West Drive and Tuas Link 4.
This new terminal is part of LTA’s ongoing efforts to upgrade our bus infrastructure to better serve the needs of commuters. These efforts include constructing new bus interchanges, upgrading existing ones, as well as refurbishing the facilities at older interchanges.
The new Tuas Bus Terminal is equipped with two alighting berths, and one bus-stop style boarding berth to accommodate boarding and alighting activities. It features a priority queue zone and barrier-free toilets to better cater to the needs of the elderly and less mobile. There will also be enhanced facilities for bus captains and staff, including dedicated staff toilets and a staff lounge.
All four bus services currently operating from the existing Tuas Bus Terminal, i.e. Services 192, 193, 247, and 248, will operate from the new Tuas Bus Terminal. With the new terminal, these four bus services will no longer call at Bus Stop 25411 along Tuas West Drive.
Canberra Station is a new MRT stop on the North-South Line. The North-South Line is Singapore’s first MRT line – parts of it were open in 1987 – but a new Canberra Station will be added to it in 2019.
As the elevated station is being “tagged” onto an existing line, construction will be challenging as the planners have to be mindful of working hours and work spaces.
When the new station opens in 2019, residents in the vicinity will have a direct connection to the MRT network, without the need to take a bus. Commuters travelling towards the city centre or Jurong East will save up to 10 minutes of travelling time.
To better facilitate commuter movement and enhance accessibility, Canberra station is designed with five entrances, with one connected to the new housing estates across Canberra Link. An elevated link bridge to be built across Canberra Link will enable commuters to directly access the city-bound train platform. The new station will also have covered linkways to bus stops, pick-up and drop-off points as well as bicycle parks.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the first three civil contracts for Circle Line 6 (CCL6) totalling S$1.75 billion. Works on these three contracts are expected to commence by the end of 2017 and complete by 2025.
The 4-kilometre CCL6 will have three stations, and will close the loop for the Circle Line (CCL) by connecting HarbourFront Station to Marina Bay Station. When the CCL6 stations of Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward are completed in 2025, the CCL will have a total of 33 stations, including 12 interchange stations with other MRT lines. It will also expand the rail network to areas such as Spottiswoode and the southern edge of our existing CBD.
With CCL6, commuters will enjoy a direct route between areas in the west like Pasir Panjang and Kent Ridge and key employment areas in the Central Business District, as well as upcoming developments in the Marina Bay area. Commuters travelling from areas like Paya Lebar and Mountbatten will also enjoy faster access to the retail and office centres in the HarbourFront area.
As an orbital line, CCL enhances overall connectivity and capacity, and strengthens the resilience of the MRT network by connecting the existing radial lines and creating multiple routes between stations. For example, a commuter travelling from Jurong East to Marina Bay will have the alternate option of transferring to the Circle Line at Buona Vista Station.
To cater to future needs, Kim Chuan Depot will be expanded to almost double its capacity from 70 to 133 trains. The integrated depot will also house 550 buses, which will allow us to optimise land use. The expansion of the depot will be completed at about the same time as CCL6 in 2025.
In addition to greater convenience for commuters with seamless transfers between the new air-conditioned bus interchange and the Bukit Panjang MRT and LRT stations, commuters using the new Bukit Panjang ITH can expect new features to enhance their overall journey experience. The new ITH will also feature several technological innovations to improve workplace safety, for example, a traffic management system to detect and increase bus captains’ visual awareness of bus movements within the bus parking area.
The Bukit Panjang ITH is the first integrated transport hub operated by SMRT Buses, who has invested significantly to ensure a positive travelling experience for commuters using the new ITH.
The Bukit Panjang ITH will take on a different look and feel, with its design and function planned around three key themes: Commuter Centricity, Workforce Oriented and Community Bonding. Please refer to the Annex for a summary of new features at Bukit Panjang ITH.
One of the few features unique to this hub is that commuters can soon borrow items such as portable USB charger, shopping trolley and an umbrella when they travel through the Bukit Panjang ITH. To borrow the items, commuters need to go to the WeCare Shop located near the bus interchange at the ground level of the connected Hillion Mall, also to provide an identity card (to be scanned) and a contact number. They may keep the items for up to three days, after which SMRT employees will contact them to return the things.
The Bukit Panjang ITH is fully equipped with barrier-free facilities which makes it convenient to take public transport, especially for commuters with mobility issues as well as commuters travelling with young children and prams. For example, graduated kerb edges are installed at all boarding berths to facilitate boarding and alighting of buses by passengers in wheelchairs. Bus berths and lifts have also been braille-equipped for the visually impaired.
Priority queues and accompanying seats will also be demarcated for seniors, less mobile and expectant mothers to rest and wait at, so that they can be accorded priority boarding for their buses.
All new and upcoming ITHs and Bus Interchanges developed from 2014 are also designed with standalone nursing rooms which comes with diaper changing amenities and a wash basin.
The Downtown Line 3 (DTL3) will open on 21 October 2017, making it the longest underground and driverless MRT line in Singapore, surpassing the 35.7km Circle Line (CCL). The completed DTL which will be 42km long will facilitate direct travel from the north-western and eastern areas of the island to the Central Business District (CBD) and Marina Bay areas, providing greater connectivity to residential, industrial and lifestyle enclaves.
DTL1 with six stations from Chinatown to Bugis opened on 22 December 2013 and DTL2 with 12 stations from Bukit Panjang to Rochor opened on 27 December 2015. The DTL3 Extension from Expo to Sungei Bedok, an additional 2.2km, will open in 2024.
The 21-kilometre long DTL3 comprises 16 stations and is the longest stretch of the Downtown Line to be opened. DTL3 includes three interchange stations at MacPherson, Tampines, and Expo. The MacPherson interchange station links DTL3 to the CCL, while the latter two stations connect the line to the East-West Line (EWL), providing commuters greater accessibility to the rest of the island and significantly shortening their travelling time. There are eight Civil Defence shelters on DTL3, namely Geylang Bahru, Bedok North, Bedok Reservoir, Tampines West, Tampines, Tampines East, Upper Changi and Expo.
The first 10 stations from Fort Canning to Bedok North have achieved their Temporary Occupation Permit status while final fitting out works are currently in progress at the last six stations.
4 MRT stations on Tuas West Extension will open on 18 June 2017, cutting down some commuters' journeys by up to 35 minutes.
The four above-ground stations which are beyond the current Joo Koon station are Gul Circle, Tuas Crescent, Tuas West Road and Tuas Link. They are part of the new 7.5km Tuas West Extension, which is expected to serve 100,000 commuters daily, in particular the many workers in the Jurong and Tuas industrial estates, who will see their journeys shortened.
For as an example; a journey from Ang Mo Kio to Tuas West can be cut by about 35 minutes from about 100 minutes currently, to 65 minutes with the new extension
The Tuas West Extension project also includes the construction of the Tuas viaduct, which opened on Feb 18, and a 26ha integrated depot.
There will be a preview of the extension at an open house on 16 June. All four stations will be opened to the public from noon to 8pm.
The Sentosa Gateway Tunnel will open on Thursday, 27 April 2017 at 10am. It is a one-way tunnel that connects outbound traffic from Sentosa Island directly to Keppel Road and Lower Delta Road.
The Tunnel will help to alleviate the current congestion experienced at the busy at-grade junctions at Sentosa Gateway, Telok Blangah Road, Kampong Bahru Road and Lower Delta Road.
As the SGT is in close proximity to the North East Line MRT tunnels and the West Coast Highway viaduct foundations, it was constructed with a limited headroom of 3.5m. In view of the height constraints, only cars and motorcycles will be permitted to use the tunnel.
Buses, heavy and light goods vehicles such as pickups, vans and lorries etc. can continue using the at-grade roads towards Telok Blangah Road to reach their destinations.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the civil contract to Lum Chang Building Contractors Pte. Ltd. to build a new platform at Tanah Merah Station and viaducts for a contract sum of approximately S$325 million. This project is targeted to complete in 2024. Together with the construction of a new platform, existing East-West Line MRT tracks will also be extended to connect to the new four-in-one East Coast Integrated Depot at Changi. This four-in-one depot will house trains from the East-West, Downtown and Thomson-East Coast Lines, as well as buses.
The two middle tracks at Tanah Merah interchange station will be used for trains travelling both bounds between Tanah Merah and Changi Airport stations. With an additional platform, there will be one pair of dedicated tracks for East-West Line and Changi Airport Line respectively, allowing trains of the Changi Airport Line to arrive and depart at Tanah Merah station at shorter intervals as compared to today, thus enabling faster travel to Expo and Changi Airport.
Singapore and Malaysia have signed the legally binding bilateral agreement that paves the way for the implementation of the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur High-Speed Rail (HSR) project last month. This mega rail link project will cut travel time between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to just 90 minutes, compared with more than four hours by car.
The high-speed rail line is slated to start by Dec 31, 2026. The line between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur will be 350km long and have eight stations. It will go across the Strait of Johor via a 25m- high bridge near the Second Link. Raffles Country Club in Tuas will be acquired by authorities and will need to vacate its premises by 31st July 2018 so to make way for the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail project.
A new bus interchange will be opening in Tampines on Dec 18, offering residents more bus services and improved connectivity. It will also have features that are elderly- and disabled-friendly. Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that the new interchange is part of the authority's efforts to create a more inclusive and family-friendly public transport system.
Connected via a 250m barrier-free sheltered walkway, the new bus interchange will complement the operations at the current Tampines Bus Interchange. In line with the Government's move to improve first-and-last-mile connectivity for public transport, Tampines Concourse Bus Interchange will also have 40 bicycle lots for commuters who cycle there.
Built at S$350 million, the FairPrice Hub will become the new headquarters of the enterprise, with over 600 employees working together under one roof.
It houses a distribution centre, ancillary offices, a training institute for workers and commercial space — all within an estimated floor space of 1.2 million sq feet.
Using the automated system, FairPrice is able to double its storage space to over 52,000 pallets. It is also able to manage 200 cartons per man hour — twice as much as a distribution centre that uses manual pallet movers.
