Picotin Express first came to life in 2007 at the old stables of the Turf Club Road. From the French word for a ration of horse feeds, the name “Picotin” has been promptly adopted. Presently, the family-friendly European bistro is opening its second outlet in the East region of Singapore. Indeed, Picotin Express has given a refreshing scenery to a heritage site previously hosting Hogs Bar and Restaurant. Bearing in mind the rustic roots of its birthplace of success, Picotin Express at East Coast endorses an invaluable part of Singapore’s history by featuring distinctive colonial architecture. In fact, it inherits the breath-taking sight of one of the estimated 500 remaining Black and White Houses in Singapore.
Old friends of Picotin Express will be pleased to reunite in the East once again with classics that have greatly been missed. Particularly, fresh handmade pizzas named after horse breeds including the Pinto Pizza and other magnificent dishes such as the Whole Roasted Spring Chicken and the Pico Burger. While retaining the same menu, the second outlet will see an exciting addition of breakfast dishes every day starting from June onwards.
Diners who are looking for a space to host a romantic dinner, birthday party, corporate retreat, engagement parties or weddings are from this day forward able to discover the memories and flavours of the colonial era at Picotin Express East Coast.
Picotin Express East Coast will be looking forward to welcoming new diners as well as old friends of its birthplace soon!

Leveraging its close proximity to the sea and reservoir to enhance water supply resilience, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant is poised to be a lush green gem along the Eastern Park Connector Network with its innovative design.
Keppel Infrastructure Holdings Pte Ltd (Keppel Infrastructure) and PUB, Singapore's national water agency, have unveiled the innovative design of the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant, Singapore's fourth desalination plant, at its groundbreaking ceremony conducted recently at the Marina Barrage.
The first of its kind in Singapore, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant will be a large-scale dual-mode desalination plant in Singapore that can treat both seawater and freshwater. Depending on wet or dry weather conditions, water is channelled either from the Marina Reservoir or the sea to the plant, where it will be treated.
The plant also achieves multiple uses of land, with underground treatment facilities and 20,000 square metres (sqm) of open green space on the rooftop for community recreation.
All of the plant's water treatment equipment will be located underground, topped off by a gently sloping green lawn as its roof.
The desalination plant will also incorporate environmentally friendly features such as rainwater harvesting. Rainwater collected will be used to irrigate the green roof and support the facility's water features and landscaping needs.

Firebake is a restaurant at East Coast with the first full-scale woodfire bread oven in Singapore, using European historical techniques of breadmaking. Founded by veteran food & beverage consultant Konstantino Blokbergen, Firebake is a celebration of the ancient pathways of breadmaking, and the importance of human touch in the process.
Firebake’s crowning feature is its twin woodfire ovens. One dome-shaped and the other tunnel-shaped, they allow bread to be baked and selected dishes to be slow-cooked. Hand built from some 5,000 bricks by specialized craftsmen over 6 weeks; they are a primal presence and the heart of the restaurant, because around them, and in full view of diners, the ‘theatre’ of breadmaking unfolds.
In the past in old Europe, the entire community would get together and bake bread on Sunday after church. Firebake embraces this tradition and recaptures its comforting spirit in its bread craft and a food experience that is best enjoyed with breads.
On the menu are tartines and sandwiches, salads, soups, stews, grilled and smoked meats and fish, and baked desserts – all tailored to complement the sourdough breads used in the form of sandwiches, toasts, chips, croutons and bits, and breadcrumbs. The flavours are global and contemporary while techniques are again historical European, and showcase the faceted use of the woodfire ovens and stoves, and cast iron pots and pans.

Diageo Global Travel together with DFS Group have launched the Johnnie Walker House retail showcase within DFS Group’s new wines and spirits flagship store in the central atrium of the departures concourse at Singapore Changi Airport, Terminal 3.
The establishment of Johnnie Walker House Singapore marks the seventh addition to the expanding international network of whisky embassies. This follows the success of existing flagships in Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul and Chengdu, as well as travel retail theatres in the airports of Taipei and Mumbai. The milestone also celebrates the first Johnnie Walker House in Singapore and Southeast Asia.
The design of Johnnie Walker House Singapore is inspired by the combination of two elements. The first draws from the rich, progressive travel heritage of epic ocean voyages that took Johnnie Walker from the four corners of Scotland to the four corners of the world, making it the world’s first global brand. The second is the evergreen custom in luxury retail of using trunk shows to provide tailored, exclusive experiences to valued clients.
When travellers step into Johnnie Walker House Singapore, they are transported into a retail theatre of a larger-than-life luxury steamer trunk. Designed and built by award-winning Singapore-based design agency Asylum, the highly tactile environment of leather, copper, marble, bronze, wood and steel finishing, brings to life the history, provenance and pioneering spirit of Johnnie Walker.
To commemorate the inauguration of the Johnnie Walker House Singapore, a limited edition of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label will be exclusively available at Singapore Changi Airport. The ivory-coloured ceramic bottle puduced by Wade features the landscape of Scotland and the skyline of Singapore in the brand’s hallmark Willow design. The collectible was illustrated by Dawn Ng and pictorially depicts the historic journey of Johnnie Walker from Scotland to Singapore – from the time John Walker & Sons was established in 1820, in Kilmarnock, to 1885, when the Johnnie Walker whiskies had made their way to Singapore as one of the world’s first modern luxury icons.
Embodying IHC’s vision, the four-storey IHC building is an iconic, unique and sustainable building that blends both traditional Indian as well as modern architectural elements. The architectural design for the facade of IHC is inspired by the “Baoli” (or Indian stepwell), and seeks to create an urban forum for the celebration and appreciation of Indian culture.
The diversity and multi-faceted nature of Indian culture is also captured in the use of a translucent shimmering façade to create an impression of IHC as a “shining jewel” in the day, and the transformation of the IHC into a “glowing lantern” of the Indian community with the lighting of the colourful façade mural at night.
The IHC adopted an inclusive curatorial approach under the guidance of the IHC Concept and Content Sub-committee; and defines Indian in the pre-modern context of the subcontinent. Thematic permanent displays and/or special exhibits as well as programmes at the IHC will showcase various communities from the subcontinent with ‘lived histories’ in Singapore. In addition, memories and accounts of the community have also been captured.
The IHC’s permanent gallery storyline revolves around five themes arranged chronologically to span the time period 1st century CE to the 21st century. The themes present, through artefact and interactive displays, the long history of interactions between South and Southeast Asia as well as the experiences of South Asians in Southeast Asia (especially Malaya); Singapore in particular. They narrate the history of the migrant community and their contributions to Singapore.

The Gentle Art Academy, the first Asia affiliate school to the eight time Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Champions Guilhermes and Rafael Mendes (Mendes Bros), has officially begun its first intake for its BJJ kids program.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was developed over 100 years ago and emphasizes bringing combat to the ground where a larger person's size and strength advantage is neutralized. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is recognized as being one of the world's proven most effective martial arts and was responsible for launching modern day Mixed-Martial Arts competitions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and One Fighting Championship (OneFC).
The Gentle Art Academy's syllabus was developed by brothers Guilherme and Rafael Mendes (8x World Champions) who are based in California, USA. The main US academy has developed many junior world champions and our US kids team clinched the 2013 and 2014 team world championships, making this the Best kids program in the world!
The Gentle Art Academy is housed at an East Coast Road shophouse with 3,000 square feet of floor space with plenty of padded areas for children to learn in a safe fun environment.
Classes for kids at The Gentle Art are spilt according to age. Little ones in the Babybolos (3-5yo) will be encouraged to develop and practice their physical skills through play. They will also get to nurture key social and emotional skills while engaging in activities that require cooperation, self-awareness, and communication with peers. Older kids in the Lil’ Champion class (5-8yo) will have a chance to build up their stamina and endurance while developing fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness, coordination, balance, agility, flexibility and sport preparation. Those in the Teen Warriors class (8- 12yo) will focus on the precision and the detailed execution of the techniques while building their core stamina and strength.
The academy has even launched yoga classes for parents during selected kids classes so that parents can get a good stretch and a workout while waiting for their kids to finish their lessons. More adventurous parents can even join the academy’s adult BJJ classes on the weekend to pick up some practical combat skill for themselves during the hour of the kids class.
After running Singapore’s renowned Expat Auctions for several years, where they handle an eclectic array of furniture and decorative pieces from all over the world on behalf of relocating and redecorating clients, Rob and Jo saw a gap in the market for stylish and quality international homewares and decorator items at a reasonable price. And so Singapore Trading Post was born.
The store name, Singapore Trading Post pays homage to this country’s establishment as a vital trading post for the East India Trading Company in 1819. And they continue this tradition by sourcing carefully selected pieces from old East India Trading Company areas including Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh as well as Indonesia, Vietnam and Myanmar. Their collection reflects this significant colonial era and is perfect for sourcing distinctive items that will add unique character to your space.
Coming to you soon in 2015, the National Gallery Singapore is a brand new visual arts institution building upon a sound foundation of scholarship and experience. Over time, they hope to strengthen Singapore’s role as a regional and international hub for visual arts. They will do this through the display, promotion, research and study of Southeast Asian and Singapore art, while hosting international art exhibitions.
Their future home likewise pair rich history with exciting modernity. Right in the heart of the Civic District, two monumental buildings—the City Hall and the former Supreme Court—will be refurbished and reborn as the National Gallery Singapore. At 64,000 square metres, it will not only be the largest visual arts venue in Singapore but also one of the largest in the region when the Gallery officially opens.
The National Gallery will focus on displaying Southeast Asian art, including Singapore art, from the 19th century to present day. Through a comprehensive collection, the Gallery will present the development of Singapore and regional cultures, so as to tell the story of their social, economic and political histories.
While the body of works at the National Gallery falls largely within the area of modern art, the Gallery strives towards understanding the collection in new and varied ways – taking on a contemporary approach and interpretation of the development of Southeast Asian art. The Gallery will look beyond national and regional boundaries of art, and take on a wider ambit of international visual arts culture, research into our Asian heritage and cultural affiliations, and engage with global cultures and discourses.
