This new themed garden is the first in Singapore where visitors can learn about plants used by indigenous cultures of Southeast Asia; and it features a centre for ethnobotany which complements the outdoor landscape with an interpretive exhibition of artefacts and interactive elements.
The Ethnobotany Garden is in the Gardens’ Bukit Timah Core and located at an area historically known as the Economic Garden. This section of the Gardens was previously a space for experimentation with plants that had potential commercial applications, many of which were first derived from traditional uses.
Development of the Ethnobotany Garden is aligned with the Singapore Botanic Gardens’ UNESCO World Heritage status, supporting its Outstanding Universal Value by showcasing its unrivalled collections of economic, medicinal and ethnobotanical plants – the largest such collection in Southeast Asia. This new garden enhances the Gardens’ role as an educational provider, which is in line with UNESCO’s mission.

Singapore's desalination journey marks a major milestone with the opening of the Tuas Desalination Plant (TDP). This is the country's third desalination plant and the first to be owned and operated by PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency.
The TDP is a strategic infrastructural asset that will boost Singapore's desalination capacity from the current 100mgd to 130mgd, meeting up to 30% of the country's current water demand. By 2060, desalination is expected to meet up to 30% of Singapore's water needs then.
The TDP is a compact plant, occupying a footprint of 3.5 hectares. It can produce up to 30 million gallons a day (mgd) (or 136,000 m3) of drinking water, equivalent to the water demand of about 200,000 households.
TDP boasts of many firsts. Besides being the first plant to be owned and operated by PUB, it is also the first desalination plant in Singapore to adopt a robust pre-treatment process that combines Dissolved Air Floatation and Ultrafiltration1. Such a combination helps to reduce membrane fouling when treating seawater of varying water quality, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.

Admission to the gallery is free. It is open from 9.30am to 4pm every day except on public holidays.

The new National Skin Centre will house enhanced facilities and increased capacity, bringing specialised dermatological care to more patients.
When the new National Skin Centre (NSC) opens in 2022, more patients can look forward to seamless access to specialised dermatological care. The 10-storey building will increase its current clinic capacity, by 50% to 69 consultation rooms, to meet rising demand for outpatient services.
Currently, NSC sees over 80 per cent of the overall outpatient dermatology attendances in the public healthcare institutions.
The new NSC which will be located at the NSC’s current Novena site, will house a Day Treatment Centre which will bring together diagnostic, monitoring and treatment services at one location, making access to care by patients, especially the elderly or less ambulant patients, more convenient.
There will also be a dedicated Education Centre for patients as well as caregivers. They will find useful resources and information on self-care and how to manage various skin conditions effectively. Making such resources readily available will help raise more awareness on the importance of good skin care and empower patients & their caregivers to take charge of their health.
To strengthen NSC’s role as a Centre of Excellence for clinical and translational research, its enhanced research facilities will include laboratories dedicated to non-invasive skin imaging and skin physiology. Other laboratories will facilitate studies on skin health issues prevalent in the local population, and support the conduct of a wider range of clinical trials for new therapies and treatments for common skin diseases.
As a tertiary healthcare institution, NSC’s enhanced research and education facility will spearhead clinical innovations in dermatology, train more dermatologists and healthcare professionals & raise awareness on skin health among the population.
Today, Seletar Airport is Singapore’s second civilian airport, serving general aviation (such as training, medical evacuation & MRO flights) and business aviation (private jets) users. The current terminal will be torn down when the new facility opens.
The new, two-storey terminal is sited at the eastern side of Seletar Airport. It will have a gross floor area of 9,500 square metres, of which 500 square metres will be dedicated to serving business aviation passengers.
Designed for around 700,000 passenger movements per annum, the building will be significantly larger than the current terminal, which handled about 26,700 passenger movements in 2015. This will support the relocation of scheduled turboprop flights from Changi Airport to Seletar Airport upon the completion of the new terminal in end-2018.
The layout of the new terminal is dictated by clean lines and a functional design to keep the travel experience simple and efficient for all passengers. Passenger operations will take place on the ground floor, with a clear separation between the departure and arrival areas. To handle scheduled commercial flights, the departure area will have 4 check-in counters, four immigration counters, two security screening stations and a gate holdroom which can seat close to 200 passengers. Departing passengers will be able to go through check-in, immigration and security screening in a fuss-free manner via a straightforward route, enabling a quick and stress-free boarding process for passengers.
Passengers travelling on chartered business jets and private jets can look forward to a private drop-off area and a dedicated check-in area where they will be able to enjoy quick pre-departure clearance in a private and exclusive setting. The terminal will also feature amenities such a lounge area and dedicated immigration and security screening areas for these passengers.
Drawing inspiration from its lush and serene surroundings, the new terminal will sport a modern tropical look on the façade and in the interiors. The design blends warm woody tones with a theme of nature, with a landscaped garden in the middle of the terminal. Accessible from the drop-off area at the entrance, the garden will provide a calm oasis for departing passengers and well-wishers.
On the airside, passengers will be able to board their flights conveniently with 3 aircraft parking stands adjacent to the terminal. This reduces the need for passengers to be bussed, enabling greater operational efficiency and faster aircraft turnaround time. The three aircraft parking stands will be supplemented by another 60 located at the rest of the airport.
The regional art scene is set to become more vibrant with the major revamp of the Singapore Art Museum (SAM).
SAM’s museum programming will continue throughout the revamp which is likely to cost around $90 million. Internationally renowned SCDA Architects have been appointed to manage the redevelopment of the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) buildings.
SAM opened to much fanfare in 1996 in a converted museum space that once housed the former Saint Joseph’s Institution and has not upgraded its premises since. The upcoming building works will address the growing needs of contemporary art in Singapore and focus on improving the visitor experience at SAM. The project is targeted for completion in 2021.
SAM currently occupies two separate buildings – the former St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) along Bras Basah Road - a gazetted National Monument, and the former Catholic High School, located along Queen Street. The redevelopment plans include the creation of a fully contiguous museum, more spaces to accommodate museum-based learning opportunities, as well as the infrastructure to display large-scale or technologically- demanding artworks.
SAM’s museum programming continues to take place at SAM at 8Q till end of January 2019. Thereafter, members of the public can look forward to pop-up contemporary art projects at partner venues, as well as co-curated and touring exhibitions by SAM.
Prior to the commencement of the building works, a series of archaeological activities will take place at the former SJI building during Singapore Heritage Festival 2018, as part of the National Monument’s bid to deepen the public’s understanding of its history, which dates back to 1855.

The NCO Club (known previously as the NAAFI Britannia Club) served as a vital social amenity for non-commissioned officers and their families since 1952. Gazetted alongside Blocks 1, 9 and 14 of the Beach Road Camp for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), it was one of the first modern architectural heritage buildings to be conserved in Singapore.
The NCO Club is a building that has been synonymous with the spirit of patriotism and nascent nationalism in Singapore bearing great historical, social and political significance as a place where generations of military servicemen congregated and interacted in an egalitarian, multi- ethnic setting. This was a significant milestone in Singapore’s colonial history.
Together, the four conservation buildings form a unique enclave that embodies different eras in Singapore’s history, expressed through their varied architecture. Like the conserved pre-war Tiong Bahru estate, Blocks 1, 9 and 14 reflect early Modernism with inflections of the Art Deco style. On the other hand, the NCO Club is characteristic of the more austere post-war Modernism and is one of the rare intact examples of modernist architectural heritage in Singapore. They are also representative of a milestone in Singapore’s conservation history where the buildings are neither part of a historic shop house district, nor individual monuments, but a cluster of historically and functionally-related institutional buildings.

Olivia Burton take inspiration from vintage and catwalk trends to create a range of stylish and covetable accessories. Olivia Burton pieces are feminine, fun and collectable.â Its concept store is now open at ION Orchard.
The British accessories brand was founded by best friends and ex-fashion buyers Jemma and Lesa, who met on their first day at the London College of Fashion. They bonded over a love of design, a passion to start their own business and a mutual struggle to find a watch that they wanted to wear.
Lovers of vintage, the pair would trawl through antique markets to find timepieces, but, whilst beautiful, the cogs would often stop and start. After graduation, the girls went on to pursue successful careers in fashion buying, clocking up time at diverse fashion brands such as Topshop, ASOS and Selfridges. All the while, the idea of going it alone was gathering momentum until the day in 2011 when Jemma and Lesa made the leap, quit their jobs and set about creating their own beautiful, unique watches from the kitchen table.
Named after Lesa’s great aunt whose spirited approach and energy was a huge inspiration to the girls, Olivia Burton debuted its first collection in September 2012. Its covetable, collectable styles, which now include a striking jewellery line-up, are inspired by vintage finds and the latest catwalk trends.
Designs are brought to life at the brand’s pretty East London studio, where Jemma and Lesa work closely with their small team to ensure every piece is tweaked to perfection. Think intricate hand-illustrations, beautiful references to nature and must-have colour palettes.â

The mall will also house some 50 new tenants. And the F&B offerings will increase from the current 20 per cent to 30 per cent of net lettable space when works are completed.

With its focus on contemporary, popular music and dance, Millennium distinguishes itself from the existing competition of aged dance studio brands that focus on ballroom and classical dance and do not appeal to the modern, progressive population.
The Millennium Dance Complex is known worldwide as the premiere studio of the commercial dance world and is widely referred to as a 'the place where it all happens'. Although the studio's A-list clientele and a faculty of the most sought after dancers and choreographers in the world has catapulted MILLENNIUM to a global brand, it still remains notably grounded, welcoming and dedicated to the highest level of service and instruction.

One of Singapore oldest mosques, Angullia Mosque, closes for redevelopment which will see it transform into a four-storey building that can accommodate 2,500 congregants.
Angullia Mosque has been an iconic landmark in the area of Serangoon Road and Little India for more than 120 years.
The Mosque was built on Wakaff land bequeathed by MSE Angullia. Still standing at its present site, the first blueprints of the Mosque was dated in 1890.
Since its initial construction somewhere in the late 1890s, several upgrading works have been undertaken to maintain its functionality and relevance to its immediate community.
Angullia Mosque serves a large community of Muslims within the Serangoon Road district and many of their congregants include both the local and foreign workforce within the Serangoon Road business district.
Over the years, the capacity and infrastructure of the mosque are not able to keep up with the numbers and demands of their daily congregants.
Three historical gardens will be recreated as part of efforts to restore the rich heritage of Fort Canning Park and its surroundings. The three gardens within and around Fort Canning Park make up the heritage landscapes of Fort Canning Hill, and include Singapore’s first botanic garden. The National Parks Board (NParks) will create these gardens as part of sensitive enhancements to Fort Canning Park to emphasise Fort Canning’s historical features. Enhancements will be accompanied by the introduction of a greater variety of education and outreach programmes, and enhanced accessibility to the park.
Fort Canning Centre will also be repurposed as a gallery for visitors to learn more about the history of the hill and its surroundings. Members of the public are invited to volunteer at park programmes and give suggestions on the upcoming enhancements.
As one of Singapore’s two National Parks, Fort Canning Park is deeply rooted in history, from the time of the 14th century kings to the founding of modern Singapore. The enhancements will highlight the significance of Fort Canning Hill and retrace the history of Singapore across the 14th, 19th and 20th centuries.
The heritage landscapes of Fort Canning Hill and its surroundings will be restored and weaved seamlessly into Fort Canning Park with the creation of three gardens, namely the Royal Garden, the First Botanic Garden, and Jubilee Park.
The First Botanic Garden, which was established by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1822 to also serve as an experimental garden, will extend from Fort Canning Park onto the streetscapes of roads bounded by Hill Street, Victoria Street, Bras Basah Road, Handy Road and Canning Rise. As part of the First Botanic Garden, a large part of Armenian Street will be pedestrianised and turned into a park featuring plants that were introduced as economic crops for the spice trade, food and horticulture. Economic crops such as nutmeg were cultivated in the First Botanic Garden before they were propagated across Singapore in the 1800s. The new park at Armenian Street is part of a multi-agency effort by URA, NParks, PUB, LTA, NHB and NAC in close collaboration with stakeholders within the vicinity to create new vibrant public spaces that visitors can enjoy. The new park at Armenian Street and wider sidewalks along Coleman Street will also enable visitors to walk comfortably from Armenian Street to Civic District, linking Fort Canning Park, Bras Basah.Bugis and the Civic District together into an expanded arts, cultural and heritage district.
NParks is also planning a greater variety of education and outreach programmes, including re-curation of existing heritage trails of the 14th and 19th centuries. These trails will be enhanced to interpret the rich history of Fort Canning Park and feature new nodes. The 14th century trail will feature the Forbidden Spring or Pancur Laranganwhich is believed to be the bathing site of the royals. The refreshed 19th century trail will feature the restored Raffles Garden and Farquhar Garden, which will showcase plants collected and documented by Sir Stamford Raffles and Singapore’s First Resident William Farquhar through their botanical explorations.
“Jubilee Park” will be restored where the King George V Jubilee Park was originally located at the junction of River Valley Road and Clemenceau Avenue. The park will avail more outdoor family-friendly venues for arts and culture activities in a garden setting. New amenities will include play features, a landscaped theatre and an event lawn.
Find out more about this restoration project here.

To get started, simply sign up for an account at one of the self-help registration kiosks in the SecureMyBike shop (Kampung Admiralty #01-16, located next to the parking kiosks).
