In 1872, a young man named Balage Porolis de Silva embarked on a journey into the world of luxury. He set up a jewellery boutique along High Street, Singapore, presenting not only the finest gems, but also serving the best Ceylon tea to his customers. Hailing from Sri Lanka where having tea is a daily ritual for relaxation and enjoyment, he wanted to enhance his customers’ appreciation of jewellery with tea.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Gradually, the B.P. de Silva brand name grew in reputation and became synonymous with artistry and craftsmanship. The family continues to extend the very same values and philosophy of fine jewellery into tea, elevating tea beyond a simple beverage to a premium gift. This led to the creation of The 1872 Clipper Tea Co., whose name pays tribute to the historic Clipper ships that raced to carry chests of the freshest teas to all corners of the world, at the same time acknowledging the year they planted their roots in Singapore.

The 1872 Clipper Tea Co. serves up its best-selling teas, brewed and prepared with an adventurous twist. Top off any iced-tea with its bespoke tea-infused ice cream, or go for a cup of hot tea served with a special something.
Tea lovers will get to sample and experience the flavours and freshness of The 1872 Clipper Teas at its "Tea Indulgence" corner. You can also find an interesting selection of gift teas and tea accessories.

Spinners now show off their talents to choreographed music and the entire spinning culture has assumed an edgy and hip status. Spinworkx has established itself as Asiaʼs specialist yo-yo retailer and is the exclusive local distributor of several leading yo-yo brands. As the clothing line expanded, it's raw and modern aesthetic soon developed into the next generation of new wave beach culture. They grew during a time when epochal shifts which eternally framed contemporary popular culture were taking place. In the music scene, the late 70's gave us punk. Then the early 80's brought us into the new DIY music called rap. Punk broke creative and aesthetic barriers and taught us that anyone could have a band. Rap then preceded not only to push social boundaries but also explore the ideas of remixing and sampling These new ideas and territories created a new modern platform for fashion and cultural expression.

Some of the Classics to be mentioned: Patatas Bravas (roasted potatoes with a mildly spicy tomato sauce), Croquetas (deep-fried croquettes filled with either mixed seafood blend, ham or minced chicken), Gambas al Ajillo (sizzling prawns with fresh roasted garlic), Pulpo a la Gallega (think slices of octopus, fresh potatoes, extra virgin olive oil and a dash of paprika), Selection of Spanish cold cuts like Iberico, Serrano ham, Chorizo and Lomo (cured pork). And some Chef’s creations, like Salted Cod in a bell peppers and onion sauce or Huevo Estrellado (potatoes, a couple of slices of roasted ham and a soft-yolk fried egg splashed all over in a traditional pan).
| |
| |
| |
| |
The wine list spans good labels from Spain, Italy, Chile and Argentina. Most bottles are imported directly by the owners, offering wines usually not available in Singapore. Sangria is made with Spanish Bobal red wine, Cointreau, Vermouth, Brandy and lots of zesty fruit, served in traditional clay-pot jugs.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Los Primos not only has a great Spanish food menu, but also an extensive selection of beverages. Behind the long, hand-crafted bar counter, adorned with original Iberian tiles, two expert mixologists prepare cocktails and shots to perfection, ensuring all tastes for drinks can be satisfied.
The restaurant is decorated with furniture and ornaments imported on purpose from Valencia, giving the whole place a warm, cozy, and at the same time, lively feel. The walls are scattered with prints and paintings of many aspects of Spanish life. The lights of its beautiful chandeliers are dimmed and the terrace has a few sought-after tables which seem to be just the perfect spot for people-watching in Club Street.
| |
| |
| |
| |
An extreme rarity in Singapore, Los Primos offers a "late night menu" which encompasses a good selection of hot and cold tapas, cheeses and cold cuts, until closing time: and extended to 2.00am on Fridays and Saturdays.

A tribute of quality and an invaluable remake of the English quintessential culture, they are serving snacks in a Chinese cultural enclave next to the new Naumi Liora Hotel. As if entering a preserved example of Britain's post-war cafe, the snack bar is an unorthodox fixture where you can expect a laid-back and fun environment with food served in traditional English pewter and tins, amongst a few other contemporary twists one might stumble upon.

The go-to social bistro has an unpretentious environment and serves familiar, simple food options. Their Michelin Star Chef: Jason Atherton is part brainchild of the bistro. Fresh from the recent opening of Mediterranean-inspired Modern European restaurant, Pollen in June 2012 as well as from tapas-bar Esquina fame, Jason Atherton will also lead the culinary direction for Keong Saik Snacks.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Other than Jason Atherton, the team behind this striking gem is the same team of talented chefs from Esquina that includes Executive Chef Andrew Walsh, who helms both kitchens.
Celebrating iconic comfort food from all around the world, the food includes Fish and Oysters served with homemade tartar sauce and drizzled with Maldon salt and malt vinegar, Jason Atherton’s modern take on the British favourite Fish and Chips. The Kimchi Burger consisting of a juicy patty of Wagyu beef done to perfection and topped with Korean chilli features mouthwatering and robust flavours of the fermented vegetables served in a casual burger style.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The bistro also serves the quirky D-I-Y Tuna Tartare, where you are to mix in all the given ingredients, creating a light and refreshing dish that is perfect for Singapore’s weather. For the lovers of all things zesty, Jason’s Very Hot Dog, featuring tangy ketchup lime, crispy shallots, English Cheddar, smooth-buttery avocado and spicy jalapeños is a must-try.

True to British cafeÌ culture, Keong Saik Snacks also serves gourmet coffee and tea, alongside a small but well-curated wine and international beer list put together by award-winning head sommelier Laure Patry of Pollen Street Social in London.

What makes them stand out from other Arabic restaurants is that they sell Yemeni dishes which are native to Hadramaut, like Mandi rice, made of basmati rice, meat and a mixture of spices. Another dish typical of the Gulf is Harissa, an exotic mix of lamb stew with wheat. While they have Yemen-based dishes, they also serve cuisine typical of other Arab regions, a testament of the beautiful harmony of spices and cooking methods brought about by the Ottoman Empire. Clad in funky glass chandeliers and luxurious bling-ed out lounge chairs to sink into, mojo is the perfect setting for chilling out into the wee hours.
The name Mojo has various meanings depending on the context. It can refer to someone’s sexual charisma, popularised by the Austin Powers movie series. Other meanings also include magic spells, voodoo, or even a concoction of various hard-liquors.

Centrally-located, Mojo at Club Street is tucked away from crowded main streets, yet still easily accessible from all areas of the island. Nestled in the heart of Chinatown, Club Street has been home to a treasure trove of restaurants, bars, lounges, and cafeÌs, bustling with life and energy. With the introduction of the new lounge Mojo, you will have yet another funky venue to unwind after a long day at work.

If you were wondering where the former executive chef of The St. Regis Singapore (Frédéric Colin) disappeared to, then you'll be pleased to know that he has taken over the location of Table 66 and has just started his own restaurant called Brasseri Gavroche, a cosy French brasserie.

Chef Frédéric is a stellar chef and one who can consistently deliver dish after dish of excellence. Chef Frédéric studied at the prestigious Ecole Hôtelière Jean Ferrandi in Paris and entered the finals of France’s apprentice of the year award. His first cooking assignment was during military service, where he was personal chef to the Military Governor of Paris. A steady climb ensued, giving him opportunities to work with celebrated chefs and filling his resume with many Michelin-starred restaurants.
For the francophiles amongst you, this is definitely a place you need to add to your must-visit list and be sure to try the baked pork terrine pie with duck liver and Grandpa Henri's fish quenelle with crayfish sauce, they are both to die for.

Nu Artists Gallery are a small art gallery started by two persons' love for paintings.
Nu Artists Gallery aims to be a platform for emerging artists, a place for likeminded souls to buy affordable pieces and a chill out place for all who want to enjoy and create art.
Their current focus is on contemporary Burmese artists. Though Burmese art tends to be synonymous with religious subjects such as temples, monks and Buddha paintings in the minds of many; modern Burmese art is in fact far from homogenous. They have personally sourced the pieces, some from the private collections of their artists, to showcase a side of Burmese art seldom seen.

Do drop by soon to have a look at their collection.
From mid-November 2011, they have started their Art Jamming© session where it will be your turn to create, de-stress and have fun with friends, family and other likeminded people. For a small fee, all the materials for a 3 hours session of sketching or painting will be provided. Go soak in the atmosphere, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea on them and paint the night away.
Nu Artists Gallery also offers art work rental (min. 6 months) and the leasing of their venue for events.

83 on Club Street is the introduction of an innovative new bar and dining concept.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Urban art, progressive sounds and a kitchen offering an innovative, French-inspired take on food gives 83 an instant cult allure, similar in spirit to places you might find in London or New York.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Just like the food, there is nothing expected about the design concept. Conceived by The Stripe Collective for Deliciae, 83 displays a playful blend of Steampunk and Urban Free Radical influences.
| |
| |
| |
| |
It’s an environment where the visual dialogue is "Jules Verne meets Banksy for a beer and escargot". As with the ever-shifting streets in which Urban Art originated, from month to month 83 will never look the same. Urban artists are invited down to do full wall paste-up's. These gritty, raw and playful works are framed by copper walls, Georgian panelling, leather Victorian chairs and contemporary lines. Not to mention the handcarved lifesize tigers that await you.
| |
| |
| |
| |
83 launches with five giant urban art paste-up’s by Sheryo, Mojoko, Kristal Melson, Speak Cryptic and Eric Foenander; five rising stars of the underground art scene in Singapore. Works by new artists will revolve every 6-8 weeks. Watch this space! High-quality, limited-edition prints are also available from the bar, priced at $83.

Holding true to the statement that ‘it’s better to eat at a bar than drink in a restaurant’, 83 offers a sophisticated drinks and cocktail list, French-inspired bar bites and sharing plates that use only the freshest and highest-quality ingredients.

Check out some useful tips on how to make your workout kit more eco-friendly!
Tip 1 - Carry a reusable water container - the gym will sell you bottled water, but it’s expensive and wasteful! Great tip: add a couple drops of essential oil to your water for flavour and an added health boost! But make sure it’s therapeutic grade! We especially love: Young Living’s lemon oil.
Tip 2 - Wear something comfortable, pretty and eco-friendly!
Tip 3 - Most gyms provide plastic bags for your post-workout gear - carry your own reusable baggie and say no to plastic bags!
Tip 4 - Pack some organic toiletries - Touch The Toes favorite: "Intelligent Nutrients" (www.intelligentnutrients.com/)
Tip 5 - Stash a yummy post workout treat - Ombar probiotic chocolate bars! They’re healthy, organic and delicious!

They believe that great design combines art and functionality.
They make it their mission to design for all women.
They don’t use a fit model; they use real women.
This is why their collection flatters women from a size 6 to a size 20.
| |
| |
| |
| |
They have watched so many of their customers be transformed and learn to love their body because they have discovered clothes that make them feel like a woman.
| |
| |
| |
| |
All women want this positive experience from clothes, so Maria Grachvogel wanted to make the collection accessible to women beyond their Sloane Street store.
| |
| |
| |
| |
This dream has now become a reality for women in Singapore as they have just opened their 1st flagship store here at The Paragon.

The PAROS Sentosa Cove is designed by Design Collective Architects. In a context where each house tries to out-do the previous with newer technology, materials and exotic finishes, the philosophy of PAROS was to undo all of the above.
PAROS was to provide the break in the monotony of what was becoming of the common streetscape of closely constructed single residential homes.
There was a conscious attempt to create and to hide architecture. The dwelling space was created by means of peeling the earth up and tucking beneath.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The space created would open out towards the back of the plot overlooking the waterfront and close off and disappear along the front driveway.
Only a blank white wall signifies the presence of a building within the place.
The entire roof of the house seems to rise from the earth, taking along what was the original garden with it onto the rooftop. The roof top garden is accessible from the master bedroom.

Some might simply call them just another backpacker inn, but they beg to differ. At Matchbox, they exist to serve the savvy flashpacker, and don’t expect them to be conventional. Because the world is changing, and so must they.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Just what is a flashpacker? Simply put, a flashpacker is a well-informed Business Class backpacker who comes inseparable with his/her fancy technological gadgets, be it the flashy smartphone or the latest snazzy camera.

Without it, you’re toast. They’re definitely backpackers at heart, but that doesn’t mean they don't know how to appreciate a little luxury. For example, its kitted out with trendy furnishings from home-grown furniture label Ministry of Chair and toiletries from beauty and wellness group Spa Esprit.

Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs has significantly increased its office capacity here with enough space to add 400 staff (up from its current 600) to drive its regional expansion.
They continue to grow their business in Singapore and South-east Asia and hence the requirments for expanded office capacity here.
Goldman is known to run a very lean operation, so expanding to such an extent shows the strategic importance of Singapore to the bank.

Goldman has leased two floors at Mapletree Anson in Tanjong Pagar, adding 40,000 sq ft of office space.
That means it has almost doubled its existing space of some 50,000 sq ft at 1 Raffles Link. More than 200 employees moved to the Mapletree Anson office earlier this year to carry out mainly back-office jobs such as data-checking and information technology support.

Since their very first days in Chicago at 10 West Madison Street, Garrett Popcorn Shops has maintained their dedication to fresh, hot-air popped popcorn. They continue to use only the highest quality ingredients, and Garrett Popcorn Shops never uses fat or oils in the popping process. They know that their popcorn costs more to make, but their CaramelCrisp® and CheeseCorn are worth it. They’re sure you’ll agree....
They start with their privately grown blend of kernels, pop them right before your eyes (guaranteeing freshness!) and then gently fold them into their three generations old, secret family recipe. This commitment to their recipe also extends to their suppliers and their highest quality ingredients. In fact, they are proud of their long-standing relationship with their suppliers - many of whom date back to their first days in Chicago.
| |
| |
| |
| |
For over half a century Garrett Popcorn Shops has focused on fresh, delicious, comfort food. They limit their popcorn based selections to Plain Popcorn, Buttery Popcorn, CaramelCrisp® (which you can choose to be blended with cashews, macadamias or pecans) and CheeseCorn. Their simple menu allows us them focus on what they do best: deliver an honest product that generates lines of historic proportions outside of their retail locations. It’s all part of the fun, part of the mix, part of the tradition ....you never know who you’ll meet in line.
Customer satisfaction remains their highest priority. Twenty years ago they received requests to produce a mix of their CaramelCrisp® and CheeseCorn. Their customers were right - the sweet and salty combination is wildly pleasing. Originally called "The Mix", customers also inspired its new name, "The Chicago Mix," again reflecting their commitment to Chicago and to tradition.
| |
| |
| |
| |
In 2002, Oprah selected "The Chicago Mix" as one of her "Favorite Things" exclaiming, "It is so good! I love when you mix the cheese with the caramel!" Again in 2005 Garrett was selected as one of Oprah’s "Favorite Things" in a holiday show dedicated to the relief workers of Hurricane Katrina.
Garrett Popcorn Shops have always been a family-based company, and today’s management is no different. Their families are much like your families. They lead busy, engaged, and full lives. They value convenience, and they know you do too. To respond to their contemporary fast-paced lives, Garrett Popcorn Shops has made it easier to order their product online. All of their products, including their new gift cards, can be ordered efficiently with a couple of clicks of a mouse.
Visit them online or now you can visit them at a new prime location right outside Liat Towers on Orchard Road.

The smooth concrete floor and bright lights dangling from the elevated ceiling by black wires give the new space a refreshing industrial look, complete with a storage-style entresol. Whilst it could be easily confused with a workshop, most of the store’s fittings have been made from reused chipboards and refurbished furniture. Vintage style.

Look out for the galvanized zinc plates which can be found all around the store and appreciate that neat rugged feel.

Luke's Oyster Bar & Chop House has just opened off Gemmill Lane off Club Street and features Travis Masiero's take on a popular aspect of the All-American experience - an oyster bar-cum-grilled meat and sandwich joint that recalls the kind of casual-cuisine, good-value places commonly found across the US, particularly around coastal regions.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Mr Masiero spent over three years at The Wine Garage before starting neighbourhood eatery Spruce and also consulting on menu concepts for the Lo & Behold Group, is excited about this new enterprise, a 1,600-sq ft shophouse with high ceilings and an Old World feel to it.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Mr Masiero, grew up in the Boston area and is well acquainted with the best seafood and steak restaurants there. He thought about all the restaurants that he loves and what makes them special and an oyster bar was something he always had in my mind.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The space features a 15-seat counter along one wall and a series of booths along the opposite wall. The look is somewhere between a Parisien bistro and a New England oyster bar. There's a sort of casualness and conviviality to it and the focus is on doing things he really loves well - exceeding expectations is his number one objective.
| |
| |
| |
| |
They will buy seafood direct from a supplier in Boston and Luke's - which is named for his two-year-old son Lucas - will offer the best oysters available at various price points.
People still want great food in a great space - there's a uniqueness in finding a small space that's personable and it's expected to attract a late-crowd also. Menu items include bone-in chops and steaks as well as casual fare like burgers, sandwiches and New England lobster rolls - steamed lobster in a toasted hot dog bun - and four or five different types of oyster each day.

Sling Conceptual Dining has officially open its doors to the public. The newest addition to the Shots group, Sling Conceptual Dining is set to provide its patrons with a dining experience unmatched by any other. With head chef Tony Seah at the helm of Sling, the food and dessert on the menu are of European influences, as chef Tony specialises in French and Italian cuisine. Each dish that passes through his kitchen to the dining table is flavourful and complex, yet light in texture.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Not forgetting the sense of sight, chef Tony Seah creates food that is as good to look at, as it is to eat. Each dish is an art piece on its own; the large white china on which the dishes are served provides the blank canvas for him to showcase his artistic aptitude as well as culinary expertise. In keeping with their policy of using only the freshest ingredients, there is no ala carte menu offered at Sling Conceptual Dining; rather, chef Tony creates a new set menu every one or two weeks depending on what ingredients are best at the time.
| |
| |
| |
| |
From beef cheeks to salmon, you never know what gastronomic adventure lies in store for you. Sling can refer to the tools used in hunting food, both from land and sea. With Sling, they want to provide their patrons with food that is made from only the freshest ingredients to ensure only the best quality and best tasting food is served.
Not stopping at providing just quality food, this fine dining restaurant aims to all your senses apart from just taste. As one walks up the flight of wooden stairs to the restaurant, it becomes clear that the concept of Sling Conceptual Dining was inspired by the idea of water. With walls covered in light blue mosaic tiles complimented by lighting that replicates the effect of sunlight hitting water, the space makes one feel as if one is dining in an underwater glasshouse.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Peaceful and tranquil as that may be, however, looking out the large windows of Sling Conceptual Dining, to a panoramic view of the historical and vibrant Club Street, you are quickly reminded that you are in fact sitting on the second floor of a shophouse in the trendy Ann Siang Hill.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Additionally, Sling Conceptual Dining hopes to hold on average a wine pairing dinner every month. They are extending the concept of water not just in the brand and interior aspect, but also in the kitchen where sauces and food are inspired by any kind of water. They already have a jello made with a lifestyle energy drink, and who knows, you may be looking at an Orangina pasta sauce next or even different waters to be paired with your food, taking the experience of drink and food pairing to a whole new level.

It has been 18 months since Croyez Studio first opened its doors to fitness enthusiasts in Singapore. With the first Power Plate and NARL studio tucked away in the lush greenery of Dempsey Hill, Director Gwendolyn Thio and Sharon Thio are now ready to take on the city. After an arduous search for locatins they have decidedly settled on Purvis Street. Hence, this February 2011 marks the beginning of Croyez@Purvis.
Purvis Street was chosen not only because of its close proximity to the heart of the cuty but also because it retains the olden charm of Singapore. Being able to open their second studio in a conserved shophouse is definitely a dream come true for them.

The new Bible House is an eye-opener in many different ways. The building has take on an artistically designed facade with illuminated plates on one side and see-through walls imprinted with text (Bible verses) in futuristic style for its upper floors on the other. Most people tend to think of the Bible House and its owner, the Bible Society of Singapore, as being a part of history past. After all, the work of spreading copies of Scripture can be traced to the time of Raffles.
Among the purposes of the $15 million building is “to project a new image” for the ministry, which publishes and distributes copies of the Bible and encourages their use in addition to selling them. The Bible Society of Singapore sells some 40,000 Bibles annually in Singapore, distributes free copies overseas and funds its distribution in China and has helped a handful of people become fully qualified Bible translators.
Yet the most visible sign that the Bible Society is keeping up with the times is the way in which it has been helping an often busy modern society keep up with its reading of Scripture through a popular three-year Bible reading programme, providing the Bible in audio formats such as MP3, CDs and Megavoice. The Bible was afterall originally written to be heard.

The new Bible House comes with two full basements that will be used as multi-purpose halls and a rooftop garden above five floors. The total floor space has been increased by nearly one-third. The new structure is well-cabled and ‘Internet-ready’. The Bible House now houses the offices and headquarters of the Bible Society of Singapore and features a Bible showroom cum shop, a small Bible museum and facilities for meetings and seminars.
While the Bible House has brought back its four anchor tenants: Scripture Union, Youth For Christ, Fellowship of Evangelical Students and Christian Business Men Committee; it also now accommodates organisations on a longer rather than shorter term unlike previously.
Rebuilding work for the Bible House, on the same 13,000 square feet plot of land along Armenian Street, began in August 2008.

Strictly Pancakes is the result of the Pancake Pact between owners Joanne Chuah and Eunice Leow, and stems from their days spent working the service floor part-time while pursuing their undergraduate educations. From their days behind the counter, scooping ice-cream and interacting with customers in a small yet popular ice-cream parlour, Joanne and Eunice built up excellent rapport, and a firm friendship that blossomed over time. The experiences at the parlour unearthed their previously closeted passions for providing quality service and the desire for creating great tasting food for patroms to enjoy in a relaxed atmosphere. Since then, the two have always envisioned opening their own cafe, serving their favourite dish, Pancakes. Thus, the Pancake Pact was made. So, a year into the Pancake Pact, Joanne and Eunice decided to take the plunge and realise the dream from January 2010 and have never looked back since. Countless hours in the kitchen experimenting and even more spent planning have finally come to fruition in Strictly Pancakes, where Joanne and Eunice showcase the best of their passions and talent for your enjoyment. Apart from offering Traditional Stacks of Pancakes in Authentic Maple Syrup and Five different types of Butters, they also serve our Pancakes as Savouries and Sweets. Savoury Pancakes feature their Medium stacks served along with a range of meat, poultry and seafood items. Their Sweets are served with a whole range of sin to be a diet's bane. Fresh fruits, cream, ice-cream and caramelised goodness are all packed into an exciting range of sweet treats which are, despite traditional caution, perfect any time of day. Do visit them and partake in the story of the Pancake Pact, where your satisfaction fuels their ambition. Love now has a new shape. 44a Prinsep Street Tel: +65 63334202 or email: [email protected] |

//for everything starts with a drom// If one is watchful and quiet enough, you could see that the wind carries with it, many random floating dream bubbles. As wide as the skies are above our heads, and as vast as the grassfields are below our feet, so are the big dreams in our little hearts. We love catching floating dream bubbles, careful in letting them rest on the top of our palms. Watchful in not letting them burst, amidst the occasional drizzles of showers. Precious are these delicate dreams. We see ourselves as dream keepers, and we hope to be able to share a piece of our drom with you, and yours with us. 7 Ann Siang Hill Tel: +65 6225 5541 or email: [email protected] |
