Luke's Oyster Bar & Chop House has just opened off Gemmill Lane off Club Street and features Travis Masiero's take on a popular aspect of the All-American experience - an oyster bar-cum-grilled meat and sandwich joint that recalls the kind of casual-cuisine, good-value places commonly found across the US, particularly around coastal regions.
Mr Masiero spent over three years at The Wine Garage before starting neighbourhood eatery Spruce and also consulting on menu concepts for the Lo & Behold Group, is excited about this new enterprise, a 1,600-sq ft shophouse with high ceilings and an Old World feel to it.
Mr Masiero, grew up in the Boston area and is well acquainted with the best seafood and steak restaurants there. He thought about all the restaurants that he loves and what makes them special and an oyster bar was something he always had in my mind.
The space features a 15-seat counter along one wall and a series of booths along the opposite wall. The look is somewhere between a Parisien bistro and a New England oyster bar. There's a sort of casualness and conviviality to it and the focus is on doing things he really loves well - exceeding expectations is his number one objective.
They will buy seafood direct from a supplier in Boston and Luke's - which is named for his two-year-old son Lucas - will offer the best oysters available at various price points.
People still want great food in a great space - there's a uniqueness in finding a small space that's personable and it's expected to attract a late-crowd also. Menu items include bone-in chops and steaks as well as casual fare like burgers, sandwiches and New England lobster rolls - steamed lobster in a toasted hot dog bun - and four or five different types of oyster each day.
Nestled in a quiet and serene corner of Punggol is Frienzie, a new Bistro & Bar that opened earlier this year. Sporting wholesome, value-for-money western fare, it has already become a popular destination for families and friends living in the area to gather. The place has become so popular that it is usually full by 7pm, even on weekdays. The restaurant takes reservations before 7pm. For drivers, there is also ample parking within the compound.
There is much to love about the calm and friendly ambience – located right along the Punggol River, the scenery of the natural forests, hills and water provides for a restful and relaxing atmosphere to unwind with after a hard day’s work.
Al-fresco dining is also available and while the restaurant is open-air, it’s still very windy and cool. Gazing out at the un-spoilt beauty of nature, one almost feels as if this little jewel of a place is part of a paradise retreat and not part of Singapore at all.
Kick-back and relax in one of their comfortable lounge chairs to the sounds of bossa nova and jazz from their stereo, with some booze from their bar, or enjoy some of the following chef nightly specials.

Serving up delectable eats & premium drinks. Casual elegance without all the premium expense. It has been said that this pub has the best devil's curry in town, with a homemade recipe that was handed down generations. Apparently devil's curry does not have coconut milk like normal curry but instead full of spices. This was not spicy hot at all, but with enough of a kick for you to keep dipping that bread in.

Verve Bar & Bistro has become the latest place to chill and the best reason yet to check out the hidden delights of Gillman Village.
Verve’s home is the old "Regal Cinema". Once a hang-out for British Officers it has been nicely converted to offer stylish air conditioned and alfresco dining, set amongst the original greenery and secluded outlook that sets Verve apart from many other Bistros in town.
Verve is about doing simple things right. It is unpretentious, easy going and relaxed; and yet has a unique style, and flair that is well suited for those looking for somewhere a little special that’s off the beaten track.
By day, Verve is a spacious clean fresh looking bistro that offers great value lunch deals for executives from the local technology park. At night however Verve transforms into a unique stylish setting with an exclusive cocktail bar (try their Appletini, it's the BEST!) and a candle-lit deck that’s perfect for quiet romantic diners and private parties.
