The National University Hospital’s (NUH) new heart centre will be a one-stop centre for heart patients, with its own dedicated cardiovascular nursing and operations team. Officially opened yesterday, the centre will focus on six areas of cardiovascular care: heart failure, congenital heart disease, acute coronary syndrome, vascular disease, women’s heart health and heart rhythm disorder. Its new three-storey building also brings together several departments that used to be scattered across the hospital grounds. These are the cardiac, and thoracic and vascular surgery departments, and the Cardiovascular Research Institute.
The focus is on a holistic and comprehensive approach to treating heart disease. As part of this approach, the new centre even has a garden created by multi-media artist Tan Swie Hian, featuring various sculptures and poems about the heart. This is Singapore’s second heart centre, and is meant to complement the Outram Road facility and take over some of its patient load.
NUH sees about 62,000 outpatients for heart illnesses yearly. With its increased capacity, the new heart centre will be able to see about 10 per cent more patients. This is expected to adequately handle sustained increases in workload for at least the next six to eight years. The new centre’s six key focus areas are meant to address the problems that come with Singapore’s ageing population. Its women’s heart health clinic is also the first of its kind in Singapore. Cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and stroke, is the No. 1 killer among women in Singapore. There is also the addition of a cardiac rehabilitation centre which will provide aerobic and weight-resistance training to improve patients’ heart health.
With the new centre, floor space has increased by more than three times. The number of clinics and laboratories has also been increased by about 50 per cent to cater to a larger number of patients.

Residents in the fast-growing Sengkang and Punggol areas will be served by a new hospital and an additional polyclinic. Opening in 2020, the Sengkang hospital - which will likely have between 500 and 600 beds - will be the third new hospital to be up-and-running in a decade, following the opening of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital last year and the scheduled opening of the Jurong Hospital in 2014.
Substantial investments in the healthcare infrastructure, including a S$50-million upgrade of polyclinics at Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Geylang, Tampines and Yishun over the next five years have just been announced as well. A new polyclinic will also be built in Punggol.

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, #01-02 2 Bayfront Avenue
The Chinese New Year will bring about a new chapter for Dover Park Hospice when it expands its services and facilities at a cost of $2.5 million. The three-storey building at 10 Jalan Tan Tock Seng will have 10 more beds in four single rooms and three two-bed rooms, raising its bed capacity from the current 40.
Further expansion is not possible at the current site because of space constraints. The hospice is also hiring another six nurses to add to the current staff strength of 21 nurses, four doctors, a medical social worker, a counsellor, eight care employees and a part-time music therapist. Preparations for the new beds are underway, and the foreign nurses who occupied dormitories on the top floor are moving out.
The dormitory space will be turned into offices, which are now on the lower floors. The space on the lower floors will, in turn, be used for the new beds. A multi-purpose room and another one for prayers will also be refurbished to create more single rooms for patients. The walls will be repainted from the current white and orange to something more soothing. The hospice's expansion will be a small boost to the palliative care sector, which serves about 1,200 inpatients a year, according to the Health Ministry.
Dover Park Hospice opened in September 1995 with 40 beds. It has an annual operating cost of $4 million, of which 35 per cent is paid for by government subsidies, half by fund-raising events and donations and 15 per cent from patients' fees. Patients pay $210 per day, of which $160 can be drawn from Medisave. About a third of the patients are fully subsidised.

Slated to open in 2014, the 700-bed acute hospital will be twinned with a 280-bed community hospital to provide patients with holistic and integrated care. United Parcel Service Inc., the world's largest package-delivery company, plans to open two health-care-logistics hubs in Asia to tap rising regional demand for medical devices and drugs.
The first facility will be in Singapore to handle Southeast Asia and will open later this year, and the second will be in China and will open in early 2011. UPS acknowledges that healthcare is a growing sector and one that they're going to spend more time developing. It was further commented that with governments spending more on health care and people living longer, it's a growing industry.
UPS raised its annual profit forecast recently with a jump in shipments in Asia and Europe. The company expects 'very strong demand' for air and ocean freight within Asia and is seeking to further expand services to the 'high-growth' health care.
