Oasia Downtown, designed by WOHA, sets out to create an alternative imagery for commercial high-rise developments. It combines innovative ways to intensify land use with a tropical approach that showcases a perforated, permeable, furry, verdant tower of green in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District.
In programmatic response to the client’s brief of having distinct Soho, Hotel & Club rooms, WOHA adopted a club sandwich approach by creating a series of different strata, each with its own sky garden. Introducing layers of elevated ground levels allow the precious but limited ground floor space to be multiplied, creating generous public areas for recreation and social interaction throughout the high-rise.
Sited within a densely built up area, the tower carves out its own internal spaces and dynamic views instead of relying on external vistas for visual interest. Each sky garden is treated as an urban scale verandah, sheltered at high level by the preceding sky garden and open sided for formal and visual transparency. The openness also allows wind to pass through the building for good cross-ventilation. Large scale High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans are incorporated as kinetic sculptures that complement the sky garden design and ensure thermal comfort. In this way the public areas become functional, comfortable tropical spaces with greenery, natural light and fresh air instead of enclosed, internalized air conditioned spaces.
Landscaping is used extensively as an architectural surface treatment and forms a major part of the development’s material palette both internally and externally, achieving an overall Green Plot Ratio of 750%. The building form is softened by a living green façade of creepers and flowering plants, creating an alternative image distinct from the surrounding glassy towers of the CBD, one that is tropical, urbanistically sensitive and humanistic.
The duo behind Bartini on Club Street and new 80s-themed restaurant Retrospective on Keong Saik Road have opened their latest venture; Mariko's, a ramen bar and izakaya based on a fictional manga character by renowned Japanese illustrator Yoshihiro Tatsumi.

The ramen corner is really a 30-seater space in a shophouse with a 15-stool contemporary bar counter. Standing out from a typical Japanese restaurant. DJs from DJ collective Off the Boat spin funk and soul tunes with a Japanese tinge on weekend nights.
Enjoy Japanese beers such as Asahi and Sapporo, along with Japanese sake and whiskey. Bartenders Barnaby Murdoch and Zac Mirza concoct mind-blowing Japanese-inspired cocktails.
You will definitely feel like you are walking down a back alley in Japan.

Run by The Mangiatutto Group of Restaurants, who brought you Cugini Trattoria, just a few steps away and Solepomodoro in quaint Mount Sophia, this Taberna aims to bring to Singapore the real, traditional, genuine flavors of the Spanish cuisine.
Drawing on the experience of the owners in the region around Valencia, with a team of Catalan and Valencian professionals in the kitchen, Los Primos serves an array of more than 30 inviting traditional tapas. Some of the Classics to be mentioned: Patatas Bravas (roasted potatoes with a mildly spicy tomato sauce), Croquetas (deep-fried croquettes filled with either mixed seafood blend, ham or minced chicken), Gambas al Ajillo (sizzling prawns with fresh roasted garlic), Pulpo a la Gallega (think slices of octopus, fresh potatoes, extra virgin olive oil and a dash of paprika), Selection of Spanish cold cuts like Iberico, Serrano ham, Chorizo and Lomo (cured pork). And some Chef’s creations, like Salted Cod in a bell peppers and onion sauce or Huevo Estrellado (potatoes, a couple of slices of roasted ham and a soft-yolk fried egg splashed all over in a traditional pan).
The wine list spans good labels from Spain, Italy, Chile and Argentina. Most bottles are imported directly by the owners, offering wines usually not available in Singapore. Sangria is made with Spanish Bobal red wine, Cointreau, Vermouth, Brandy and lots of zesty fruit, served in traditional clay-pot jugs.
Los Primos not only has a great Spanish food menu, but also an extensive selection of beverages. Behind the long, hand-crafted bar counter, adorned with original Iberian tiles, two expert mixologists prepare cocktails and shots to perfection, ensuring all tastes for drinks can be satisfied.
The restaurant is decorated with furniture and ornaments imported on purpose from Valencia, giving the whole place a warm, cozy, and at the same time, lively feel. The walls are scattered with prints and paintings of many aspects of Spanish life. The lights of its beautiful chandeliers are dimmed and the terrace has a few sought-after tables which seem to be just the perfect spot for people-watching in Club Street.
An extreme rarity in Singapore, Los Primos offers a "late night menu" which encompasses a good selection of hot and cold tapas, cheeses and cold cuts, until closing time: and extended to 2.00am on Fridays and Saturdays.

83 on Club Street is the introduction of an innovative new bar and dining concept.
Urban art, progressive sounds and a kitchen offering an innovative, French-inspired take on food gives 83 an instant cult allure, similar in spirit to places you might find in London or New York.
Just like the food, there is nothing expected about the design concept. Conceived by The Stripe Collective for Deliciae, 83 displays a playful blend of Steampunk and Urban Free Radical influences.
It’s an environment where the visual dialogue is "Jules Verne meets Banksy for a beer and escargot". As with the ever-shifting streets in which Urban Art originated, from month to month 83 will never look the same. Urban artists are invited down to do full wall paste-up's. These gritty, raw and playful works are framed by copper walls, Georgian panelling, leather Victorian chairs and contemporary lines. Not to mention the handcarved lifesize tigers that await you.
83 launches with five giant urban art paste-up’s by Sheryo, Mojoko, Kristal Melson, Speak Cryptic and Eric Foenander; five rising stars of the underground art scene in Singapore. Works by new artists will revolve every 6-8 weeks. Watch this space! High-quality, limited-edition prints are also available from the bar, priced at $83.
Holding true to the statement that ‘it’s better to eat at a bar than drink in a restaurant’, 83 offers a sophisticated drinks and cocktail list, French-inspired bar bites and sharing plates that use only the freshest and highest-quality ingredients.

This is the Marmalade Pantry's second outlet and as expected it has a rather familiar feel to it - similar to the flagship at ION Orchard with bright and airy spaces and soft yellow lighting but with the difference that it's not cooped up in an airconditioned shopping mall.
Tucked away at the Bukit Timah Saddle Club, it's taken over the space of the old Mimolette, which was more recently Mimo Kitchen & Bar and thre vibe is full on alfresco chic, jungle aura and colonial shindig all rolled into one.
The menu looks mouth-watering, as do all things related to The Marmalade Group and they offer brunch on weekends which is a big plus, if you're looking for a leisurely all-day gourmet experience out of the hustle and bustle of the city, with plenty of fresh air and scenic outdoor space thrown in for good measure.
The long awaited arrival of ODP (Open Door Policy) in the quaint little neighborhood of Yong Siak St in Tiong Bahru is finally here. The menu is written and overlooked by Tippling Club's very own Ryan Clift who has put together a modern bistro fare with a rustic twist.
On offer is a range of starters that are ideal for sharing, as well as meat dishes, fish courses and a dessert menu. Their food is prepared using only the freshest ingredients at friendly prices. The restaurant layout is open-planned with a show kitchen set behind a glass wall that runs aside the long narrow dining space.
For tipplers, the bar offers a strong mix of classic cocktails, while the short wine list focuses on boutique wines from around the world, many of which have been exclusively bought in for ODP.
The specialty coffee bar by the 40 HANDS team will serve rare micro-lot coffee brewed as filter and cold drip, alongside the usual espresso varieties.
Be sure to be one of the first to check out Singapore's latest hidden dining secret in Tiong Bahru!

Luke's Oyster Bar & Chop House has just opened off Gemmill Lane off Club Street and features Travis Masiero's take on a popular aspect of the All-American experience - an oyster bar-cum-grilled meat and sandwich joint that recalls the kind of casual-cuisine, good-value places commonly found across the US, particularly around coastal regions.
Mr Masiero spent over three years at The Wine Garage before starting neighbourhood eatery Spruce and also consulting on menu concepts for the Lo & Behold Group, is excited about this new enterprise, a 1,600-sq ft shophouse with high ceilings and an Old World feel to it.
Mr Masiero, grew up in the Boston area and is well acquainted with the best seafood and steak restaurants there. He thought about all the restaurants that he loves and what makes them special and an oyster bar was something he always had in my mind.
The space features a 15-seat counter along one wall and a series of booths along the opposite wall. The look is somewhere between a Parisien bistro and a New England oyster bar. There's a sort of casualness and conviviality to it and the focus is on doing things he really loves well - exceeding expectations is his number one objective.
They will buy seafood direct from a supplier in Boston and Luke's - which is named for his two-year-old son Lucas - will offer the best oysters available at various price points.
People still want great food in a great space - there's a uniqueness in finding a small space that's personable and it's expected to attract a late-crowd also. Menu items include bone-in chops and steaks as well as casual fare like burgers, sandwiches and New England lobster rolls - steamed lobster in a toasted hot dog bun - and four or five different types of oyster each day.
Sling Conceptual Dining has officially open its doors to the public. The newest addition to the Shots group, Sling Conceptual Dining is set to provide its patrons with a dining experience unmatched by any other. With head chef Tony Seah at the helm of Sling, the food and dessert on the menu are of European influences, as chef Tony specialises in French and Italian cuisine. Each dish that passes through his kitchen to the dining table is flavourful and complex, yet light in texture.
Not forgetting the sense of sight, chef Tony Seah creates food that is as good to look at, as it is to eat. Each dish is an art piece on its own; the large white china on which the dishes are served provides the blank canvas for him to showcase his artistic aptitude as well as culinary expertise. In keeping with their policy of using only the freshest ingredients, there is no ala carte menu offered at Sling Conceptual Dining; rather, chef Tony creates a new set menu every one or two weeks depending on what ingredients are best at the time.
From beef cheeks to salmon, you never know what gastronomic adventure lies in store for you. Sling can refer to the tools used in hunting food, both from land and sea. With Sling, they want to provide their patrons with food that is made from only the freshest ingredients to ensure only the best quality and best tasting food is served.
Not stopping at providing just quality food, this fine dining restaurant aims to all your senses apart from just taste. As one walks up the flight of wooden stairs to the restaurant, it becomes clear that the concept of Sling Conceptual Dining was inspired by the idea of water. With walls covered in light blue mosaic tiles complimented by lighting that replicates the effect of sunlight hitting water, the space makes one feel as if one is dining in an underwater glasshouse.
Peaceful and tranquil as that may be, however, looking out the large windows of Sling Conceptual Dining, to a panoramic view of the historical and vibrant Club Street, you are quickly reminded that you are in fact sitting on the second floor of a shophouse in the trendy Ann Siang Hill.
Additionally, Sling Conceptual Dining hopes to hold on average a wine pairing dinner every month. They are extending the concept of water not just in the brand and interior aspect, but also in the kitchen where sauces and food are inspired by any kind of water. They already have a jello made with a lifestyle energy drink, and who knows, you may be looking at an Orangina pasta sauce next or even different waters to be paired with your food, taking the experience of drink and food pairing to a whole new level.
The lavish $100 million clubhouse renovation is just the start. However, there is now a New Course with a layout which has undergone intensive work in preparation for the Asian Amateur Championship at the end of September. The first nine holes of the course were opened late last year following reclamation and upgrading work.
The greens were rebuilt to USGA specifications using Bermuda Tiff-dwaft grass, presenting the world's best surfaces. The course has also been lengthened to 6,500 metres (almost 7,200 yards) - a key factor for the Asian Amateur tournament which will present the winner with an invitation to the following year's US Masters at Augusta National. Included among the works have been upgrades to the golf course's irrigation system and drainage systems and the construction of high-quality bunkers to help manage the heavy rains, common to Singapore throughout the year.
Renovation work on the back nine holes, which includes the addition of a sand cap between the soil and grass to allow better drainage and growth of the new Zoysia turf grass in the fairways and rough has only just been completed. The New Course will boast a number of 'signature holes' which, along with the stunning view of the reservoir, dramatic elevation changes and the tranquility of the surrounding natural jungle will present a spectacular backdrop for the worldwide television audience, along with visitors and players.
The course will be set up for a dynamic tournament. They are looking forward to seeing fantastic play throughout the 18 holes with a dramatic finish to the AAC event with the drivable par four 17th hole and the challenging par five 18th to finish at their new clubhouse.
The clubhouse itself will be the centre piece of the club's development on the island location. It will feature a built-in area of 160,000 square feet and will offer new dining and banquet facilities. The all-new three-storey clubhouse will include a number of options such as a signature Chinese restaurant, an international restaurant and a cafe. It will also contain a ballroom with a seating capacity of 500, a Heritage walk and Heritage Gallery.
Another prominent feature at the island setting is the A-frame building which currently houses a reception counter, a cafe, golf bag dropoff facilities and management offices. As part of on-going redevelopment and upgrading works, the A -frame building will be converted into a gym and lifestyle centre.
The Singapore Island Country Club dates back to 1963 when it was formed following a merger of the Royal Singapore Golf Club and the Royal Island Club. Royal Singapore was originally known as The Golf Club and was formed in 1891. Members played on the race course owned by the Singapore Sporting Club.
As business grew in the area, the Golf Club moved to a new home at Bukit Timah in 1924. Its name was changed to the Royal Singapore Golf Club on November 12, 1938 when King George VI became its patron.
The complex is now known for its fine courses, which have hosted many prominent tournaments. The club contains four world-class 18-hole championship courses, an executive nine-hole course and putting and chipping greens carved out of natural terrain at both the island and Bukit locations. The latter layout hosted, among other key tournaments, the 1969 World Cup and the 1993 Johnnie Walker Classic.
Harley-Davidson Inc., the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the U.S., opened its first Asian headquarters in Singapore. The maker of Fat Boy and Sportster motorcycles has said it wanted an Asian office, partly to better understand the challenges of doing business in China, India and other fast-growing nations.
International sales, which accounted for 25% of the company’s business four years ago, were 35% in 2010. The company has set a goal of at least 40% by 2014.
While cultivating sales in Asia, Harley-Davidson says for now it doesn’t plan to manufacture bikes there. The nearest it has come to that are operations in India, where American-made Harleys are reassembled from kits to avoid tariffs.
The company is not new to the Asia-Pacific region. Its founders realized the importance of international markets soon after Harley-Davidson began operations in 1903, and archives show sales to Japan as early as 1912.
Harley is recognized in Japan as an American icon, but it hasn’t always been easy to sell heavyweight motorcycles there. Years ago, Japanese motorcyclists were required to pass a special exam if they wanted to ride large touring bikes such as Harleys. One of the tests was to ride across a balance beam. Only about 2% of riders passed the test. In 2005, Japan repealed a law that prohibited motorcyclists from carrying a passenger on major highways. That helped boost Harley sales, according to motorcycle industry analysts.
The key for Harley-Davidson will be creating a culture that views motorcycles as leisure products rather than vehicles used for everyday transportation. Much of the company’s success in the United States has come from riding clubs, called Harley Owner Groups, and from motorcyclists customizing bikes.
Everything that’s essential to supporting a regional market has been included in the new Asian office, including sales, marketing and dealer development.
