Artisanal coffee house, Jewel Coffee, has launched its second outlet, Jewel Café + Bar, in the heart of Little India on Rangoon Road.
This all-day casual chic dining concept offers you an extensive menu devoted to a selection of delicious comfort food, unique creations, original cocktails as well as its artfully crafted specialty coffee.
The striking industrial chic look at Jewel Café + Bar is based on a design of contrasts and is conceptualised by the local cross disciplinary design practice FARM. Envisioning Jewel as a gem amongst the rugged surrounds of timeworn Rangoon Road, FARM decided on a raw shell of cold, bare concrete which is embellished with jewel-inspired details such as glittering crystal light bulbs, warm brass and copper ceiling features, glass doors, teakwood paneling and pristine white subway tiles reminiscent of vintage diners.
The laidback, quirky personality of the café is also evident from the al fresco patio at the front of the café, which is set up with latticed wire chairs in a retro shade of blue and an oversized chalk board that depicts witty cartoon etchings by a local artist.
For the menu, they took an irreverent approach to calorie-counting and go the whole hog to tantalise your taste buds. For instance, the traditional French Onion Soup is duly capped with a comforting baguette crust of Swiss Cheese, Parmesan and Gruyère, which is a great foil for the sweet caramelised onions beneath.
Don’t miss the unique Shio-Koji Octopoke, Jewel’s rendition of the poke, a Hawaiian raw fish salad, that’s given a touch of Japanese glamour. Tender cubes of pan-seared octopus are tossed in shio-koji (a fermented rice-based salt substitute), wasabi and extra virgin olive oil, paired with creamy avocado and shredded ginger flower for extra zing.
The sweet-toothed should leave room for classic desserts such as Homemade Apple Crumble, Tiramisu and Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Bean Ice-Cream. A standout treat is the refreshing Pan-Seared Watermelon Steaks that’s simultaneously warm, sweet, tart and salty.
With its wide array of breakfast items, Jewel Café + Bar makes a great destination for a languorous pick-me-up any day of the week. The breakfast menu lists popular favourites like English Breakfast, Eggs Royale, Eggs Florentine, Croque Monsieur and Brioche French Toast.
You can pop in for early cocktails during the happy hour daily or post-dinner tipples, as Jewel’s full-fledged bar serves up a list of exquisite original concoctions and international beers.

Commissioned by the Housing and Development Board as an exploration of the future of affordable public housing, WOHA‘s public housing design for Skyville @ Dawson consists of 960 new homes. Their project is currently under construction and is estimated to be completed by February 2015. The design focuses on 3 themes – community, variety and sustainability.
There is a variety of community space. Each home is part of a Sky Village: 80 homes which share a naturally ventilated community terrace and garden. The block is composed of 3 villages, stacked 4 high, for a total of 12 villages. Other community areas include: the Community Living Rooms at ground level, which provides seating areas overlooking the park and is located on the main entrance route of the development; the Landscaped Park, which retains enormous historic rain trees and provides two community pavilions, play and fitness areas, courts and lawns; the Rooftop Park, which houses a 400m jogging track and rooftop pavilions which support a PV array that powers the common lighting; the Urban Plaza, located along a public linear park and provides supermarket, coffee shop and retail spaces.
The design gives variety by offering you flexible floor plans with a column free and beam free main space, eliminating waste and allowing diverse lifestyles, such as home office or loft living as well as future flexibility.
SkyVille has been awarded Singapore’s Green Mark Platinum rating, the highest rating possible. The project uses passive means and avoids the use of energy-intensive solutions rather than using high technology. Every unit is fully naturally ventilated, with every room (including bathrooms and kitchens) having windows. The common areas, lift lobbies and access walkways are all naturally ventilated and lit. The apartments are cross ventilated, with CFD simulations performed at the block and unit level. The units use passive means for comfort – all walls have vertical and horizontal sun breakers to shade both the walls and the windows, all windows have overhangs and special mid-height top hung panels that direct breeze to seating height and allow the windows to remain open during the monsoon period, the units face north and south and have openings on all sides.
PV cells at the rooftop power the common areas and a swale which is a major landscape feature treats storm water before discharging it to the storm water system. The project uses landscaping throughout the tower in the sky villages, additionally it covers 50% of all roof surfaces. Two major landscaped external spaces totaling 1.5Ha are provided.

The Co makes the process of getting a space simple and flexible with no hidden costs. You have the flexibility to rent a coworking desk by the day, 10 days a month, or monthly. Fees include WiFi, free flow coffee, pantry, shower facilities, lounge area, brainstorm room and free use of three floors of breakout spaces.

In 1727 Brazil wanted to have a piece of the coffee empire, but had to find a way to smuggle some seeds from a coffee country. In disguise, Lieutenant Colonel Palheta was sent to settle a border dispute in France Guiana. This smooth talking Officer found the coffee fortress impregnable, so he found a road of least resistance. That road was none other then the Governor's wife. His plan paid off. At a farewell dinner she presented him with a bouquet with hidden coffee seedlings. From those seeds sprang forth the largest coffee empire ever. By the 1800's Brazil's coffee was no longer a drink for the elite. Everyone was able to partake from this magical drink. Our history lesson has taught us that coffee was meant to be shared the world around.

You then select your salad dressing, that they mix with your lettuce mix and ingredients. Their salad dressings are all made at the shop, using fresh ingredients. Voila! A good sandwich is one with good bread and a generous serving of high quality tasty ingredients. Their bread is made with superior ingredients and is served shortly after baking. Most of the baking process occurs at the shop, giving the bread softness inside and a nice crisp outside. Sandwiches are made in front of you, using premium ingredients. For those of you in a hurry, you can grab a fresh sandwich in their cold display, go straight to the cashier and go.
At Fresh +, from the light continental breakfasts to the solid cooked breakfasts, their breakfast menu offers a range of items that you can combine to create the one breakfast you really need to start your day! Not to mention the buttery taste of French croissants, and many other delectable sweet treats that you can enjoy at breakfast or after lunch!
Delivering a great coffee into your cup needs 3 things: good beans, good roasting and good know-how. Sounds easy? Read the following.
Good beans and roasting: At Fresh + they only buy premium beans that have been carefully selected for their ability to create a full body coffee. The blend is a superior Arabica/Robusta blend. The beans are roasted in Singapore to achieve minimal aroma loss following the roasting process, and delivered to Fresh + shortly after roasting. Their roaster is a leader in quality and technology in Singapore.
Good know-how: How many times have they seen baristas not applying the 12kg of tampering pressure, allowing the milk to go over the burning temperature, grinding coffee hours in advance of making it, and committing what they at Fresh + consider as cardinal sins! A poor technique using good beans will give at best an average coffee. At Fresh + their baristas have been individually trained to make sure you get the best out of their premium beans. Grinding is done immediately before making the cup of coffee, and all other requirements are meticulously applied to ensure all of the coffee aroma and body goes in your mouth and nowhere else!
At Fresh +, they offer two formula of fresh juices: you can either order one of their Favourite Juices, or just design your own out of a list of fresh fruit. Their Favourite Juice recipes have been designed by a health and nutritional expert. Each juice offers a specific health benefit that you will no doubt guess by looking at their names. At the same time the ingredients in each juice and their proportions have been refined so as to create a tasty and refreshing juice. The fruit selected for their juices are cut fresh every day, from carefully selected fruit that offer maximum ripeness and juiciness.

Jewel Coffee, the latest homegrown specialty coffee and all-day casual dining concept, opened its first boutique cafe at the brand new and sophisticated One Shenton, where contemporary city living is combined with an eclectic mix of food and beverage offerings designed to appeal to the discerning urban dweller.
Jewel Coffee is a cosy hangout for those who enjoy their espresso fix while having light meal options at any time of the day. The quaint cafe will not be missed from a distance with its attention-grabbing and iconic red ‘COFFEE’ sign spanning the wall behind the brew bar, inspired by an American charcuterie in Portland. Quirky collectibles and figurines adorn the cafe interior, adding a personal touch and vibrance to the space.
Helmed by veteran chef Chalton Lam, formerly from P.S. Cafe and Prive, the 900 square feet joint has both indoor and al fresco seating, offering delicious breakfast options such as popular brioche, pancakes and frittata, to a comprehensive range of classic favourites including the mushroom medley pasta, salads and sandwiches for lunch and dinner. All pastas and salads have the option of customisation with add-ons of sausages, roast beef and chicken, or chilli for those who enjoy their food with a spicy kick. Those with sweet tooth can also satisfy their cravings with its mouth watering range of pastries and cakes. Customers can also take a pit stop in the evenings to unwind with ice cold beer, paired with mouth-watering bar snacks such as fried pork cubes with kaffir lime chilli sauce.
Jewel Coffee is the only cafe in town that focuses solely on single origin coffee options for both the espresso and the brew bar, with all espresso-based drinks getting a generous double shot of espresso for each drink served. Customers get to enjoy single origin coffees from different parts of the world, rotated on a weekly basis.
Besides bringing in Singapore’s and Asia Pacific’s first owned manual La Marzocco Strada espresso machine for highly controlled brewing accuracy by the skilled barista, Jewel Coffee also features an impressive brew bar equipped with the powerful and sleek Uber Boiler that speeds up the brewing process with a perfect control of the water temperature and dose. Jewel Coffee specialises in three main coffee brewing methods – the Chemex, the pour-over and the syphon. For coffee connoisseurs who prefer more robust coffee, the pour-over would be the preferred method of brew, while those who prefer a lighter, easier-to-drink coffee can opt for the Chemex as this method strips out the bitter elements of the coffee to provide a cleaner taste for the palate.
Jewel Coffee’s philosophy is to inculcate a culture of fine coffee appreciation, taking coffee craftsmanship to the next level akin to fine art. Customers are able to learn about the coffee craft and brewing process from the baristas as they brew their coffee ‘live’ for each order, and address any coffee queries that the customers may have. In the months to come, Jewel Coffee will also offer coffee tasting sessions to customers who are keen to refine their taste buds in the art of coffee appreciation.
For those who enjoy a cold cup of coffee or tea in our tropical heat, Jewel Coffee is one of the few places in town that offer cold steeped coffee or tea to ensure undiluted and low acid coffee and tea without any compromise in its taste.
Integrating quality and sustainability into its corporate mantra, Jewel Coffee champions the use of socially and environmentally responsible coffee and work with a handful of roasters who share similar passion to source for coffee that adhere to the strict production guidelines of ecological responsibility.
The must-haves at Jewel Coffee include its signature coffee such as The Gibraltar and the Chemex. Be sure to give these a shot for your caffeine dose of the day!
Coffee enthusiasts who simply cannot get enough of their specialty coffee can recreate their experience with the retail range of coffee brewing devices for home use. A distributor for mypressi TWIST, an authorised reseller for Keepcup and Chemex, as well as a retailer for Hario coffee brewing products, Jewel Coffee caters these retail products specifically for those in the know.

Imagine you are travelling in the woods. You are hungry and tired. You have passed by a few inns and taverns, which are either rowdy or impersonal - unless you wish to check into an inn – and they only serve predictable dreary food. Oh, wait. There is another place; however it would take you deeper into the woods and on a higher latitude - near the mountainous area. It may be a little past dusk before you reach that area.
As you amble along the dusty road, exhausted and growing quite impatient, something visibly indiscernible comes into view. A house. It's two-storied, standing behind a small courtyard, trimmed with dancing lights shining from the windows. You hear some soft laughter rising above some indistinct clinking. But one thing: the unmistakable smell of food. Suddenly, the air smells fresh as apples and aromatic as herbs, both of which are familiar and comforting. As you step into Ardent's, you just know this is the place that will suit you well.
Just like stepping into a friend's house, that's what they are - a cosy cafe / bar serving all day breakfast.
Welcome to Drips Pastry & Café, where delectable delights await you. From cakes, tarts to savoury bites, coupled with aromatic coffees and teas, we have sweet treats for any taste bud or sweet tooth.
A drip of this and a little of that...
Alfred Chan – the heart and hands behind Drips Bakery Café - touted as a gourmet pastry chef of the Heartlands, Alfred Chan has a sweet deal going for him.
Alfred opened his charming little shop in Commonwealth two years ago, selling scrumptious tarts and cakes of unique flavours. Although he spent his professional years behind baking counters at the Shangri-la Hotel and other famous academies, he liked the laid back charm of a heartlands neighbourhood and particularly its friendly patrons who visit him at his shop. Alfred soaks up this lively environment and thrives in it and the steady stream of customers is evident of its success.
Some customers have even become his friends and shared their own recipes with him, encouraging him to innovate, improve and create new flavours and ideas. Some simply want to spend time trying new cakes or pastries which Alfred whips up every so often. The current shop comfortably accommodates the retail business, but it gets harder to seat and serve his lingering patrons. So as a result of its growing popularity, Alfred decided to set up a bakery café, where customers can comfortably sample his fare.
Alfred wants to be able to share his cakes and desserts with a wider appreciative audience. He enjoys getting feedback and trying new things. In the newly opened shop, the menu offering is extensive and customers will feel spoilt for choice. From cakes, tarts, cookies, freshly baked breads and sandwiches, it’s a one-stop shop for people who like a good dessert on its own, or with their meals.
They don’t want to offer just one type of food – food should be enjoyed as complementary dishes to one another. People should not feel that they have to settle for just one type of dessert – there are many choices here, so do your best to try as many of possible.

This Viet Inspired Deli was founded by Chan Wei and they have just opened another fabulous outlet at Vivocity. He was inspired after taking his first bite of the Banh Mi Thit during his studies in Canada, in the early 90’s. The draw of the relatively low-priced and refreshing taste of Vietnamese cuisine offered him a solution to both his yearning for Asian food as well as making the most of his limited finances as a student.
Upon graduating, he travelled frequently to Vietnam, to research and sought help from anyone who would teach him the art of making Vietnamese baguettes and its fillings. The long and arduous journey paid off and in May 2006, the first Baguette outlet opened at Raffles City, serving the masses with hearty sandwiches and the comforts of simple and uncomplicated cuisine.
Savouring the taste of old Vietnam in modern Singapore, where Vietnamese noodles (“bun”) are cleverly packed into plastic boxes – a solution for busy Singaporeans who need a quick and simple meal.
With the opening of Baguette at Market Street Car Park in 2006, new items such as Chicken Sticks in Caramel Fish Sauce is being introduced into the menu to add variety to the deli.
Baguette also offers the refreshing flavours of Soda Chanh, a thirst-quenching drink, using fresh lime juice, syrup and soda water. Our latest introduction is Soda Chanh with Plum- a must try.
The aromatic smell of Vietnamese “drip coffee” is given a new lease on life as Baguette offers the opportunity to “takeaway” the drink.
Lastly but not least, Baguette is also offering Sushi Bread - a soft and tender bread wraped in seaweed, chicken floss, mayo, cucumber and tuna; like a sushi roll, hence the name. A definite must for your next tea break!
The Steeping Room is a Showcase of quality beans and interesting Brewing methods, which bring out the best in each Coffee bean.
They maximise this little space and time by providing a full sensory approach to Coffee. Their mission is to promote alternative Brewing methods and Home-Brewing. And also highlight intrinsic qualities of different types of Coffee beans.
Did you know that Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee. Coffea arabica grew wild in the forests of the Kaffa region. Coffee is "Bun" or "Buna" in Ethiopia, so Coffee Bean could possibly be a poor anglicized interpretation of "Kaffa Bun".
Also, El Salvador coffee has an undeservedly poor reputation, marred mainly due to the unstable political climate. It has however recently emerged with great coffees. At one end of the spectrum, there are the Bourbon varietals; balanced and with a classic "Central" profile. On the other end, there are the Pacamara coffee varietal, which is quirky and full of character. High altitudes, on the south coast of Central America, and good traditional varietals have played a large part in its success.
The principle of a vacuum coffee maker is to heat water in the lower vessel of the brewer until expansion forces the contents through a narrow tube into an upper vessel. When the lower vessel has more or less emptied itself and the right brewing temperature is attained, coffee grounds are added. Then the heat is removed and the resulting vacuum will draw the brewed coffee through a filter back into the lower chamber from which it can be decanted. The result is a cleaner, smoother cup as compared to other brewing methods. This method is called the Syphon / Vacuum Pot and originated in Berlin in the early 19th century.
They carry the following products: Hario Dripper, Hario Woodneck, Hario Syphon, Aerobie Aeropress, Hario Cafepresso Hario Buono Kettle, Hario Mini Mill Slim Grinder, Hario Range Server as well as the following alternative brewing items: Clever Coffee Dripper, Eva Solo Cafe Solo, Donut Coffee Dripper, Pyrex Iwaki Cold Drip.
“Cacio e Pepe” translates to “Cheese & Pepper” which are two things that always go well together.

They have just opened another beautiful outlet at I-Fly on Sentosa, directly besides the main wind tunnel.
They buy the freshest premium ingredients that are available to ensure that their sandwiches are the finest and tastiest that you can enjoy. They simply refuse to compromise on quality by using cheap fillings, as they know their customers expect the very best from O’Briens.
However, what makes them special is not so simple:

- Unique spreads and sauces only available at O’Briens
- Premium fillings of chunky tuna in brine, whole muscle ham, grade A turkey breasts
Other than sandwiches, they offer their customers 100 per cent made-to-order real fresh fruit juices, smoothies and iced drinks. Only the best is good enough for the O’Briens brand and the best dishes are made with the freshest ingredients, so never settle for anything less. After all, you are what you eat.

A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Englishman has lived and worked in Singapore for more than 20 years. He bought over the Master Franchise Rights for just 1 punt from Founder of O’Briens, Brody Sweeney.
"I first heard about O’Briens in the late 1990s through my son Alex, who was studying Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin at the time," said Hugh. "The Irish sandwich bar was Alex’s favorite haunt and he had read that the chain was looking for franchisees. I was interested, really interested. But the challenge was would it work in my home base, Singapore?
I carried out my own market survey, which convinced me that there was a niche opportunity for O’Briens in the Asian food and beverage industry. Following much persuasion that I could make it work here, I was awarded the master franchise for Asia in 1999."
Hugh has been rapidly proving that his research was spot on. As O’Briens CEO for Asia, and working from a Singapore base, his team have been busy expanding their Pan-Asian reach. O’Briens can now be found in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and soon in India!
