Katong Mall is receiving a modern makeover and history will be a key theme in the $60 million facelift. The new look for the 20 year old landmark mall - to be called 112 Katong - will draw heavily on the neighbourhood's rich Peranakan heritage.
The Peranakans, also known as the Straits Chinese, have lived in this part of the world since the 15th and 16th centuries after migrating from China. They maintain a distinctive culture.
The interior of Golden Village's Multiplex will combine traditional Peranakan motifs with modern interpretations. The lobby of its Gold Class halls will be decorated like a shophouse.
112 East Coast Road
The mall's three anchor tenants - Golden Village, Cold Storage and Breadtalk - have committed to unique design concepts to reflect this theme.
Sports enthusiasts, food lovers and families looking for recreational spots in the east will find it easier to get to their playgrounds. A new 3.8km green corridor linking up the popular East Coast Park with Bedok Town Centre, as well as Bedok Reservoir, will be built over the next five years.
This means one will be able to walk – taking about 20 minutes, or cycle directly from the MRT station or bus interchange in Bedok, to either of the two recreational spots. It is part of a larger ambitious makeover for the East Coast, and comes on top of previously announced plans for a revitalised Bedok town with a new food centre, an integrated sports complex, a mall and an air-conditioned bus interchange.
Also in the pipeline is a cycling network connecting schools, parks and MRT stations in an area stretching from Kaki Bukit to Tanah Merah. The makeover is part of the $1 billion second phase of the Remaking Our Heartland programme to rejuvenate mature estates over the next five years. The other two towns selected are Hougang and Jurong Lake.
Currently, there is no direct route for non-drivers to get from Bedok Reservoir to East Coast Park. They have to take buses or use the 6km Bedok Park Connector. Those coming from Bedok Town Centre have to traverse the expressway and roads via underpasses, or take a bus.
Now, the new cycling and pedestrian path, which runs parallel to Bedok North Avenue 1 and Bedok South Avenue 1, will cut travelling time. It will also be lined with gardens and sports facilities. Meanwhile, a new integrated sports facility will be built in Bedok North Street 1, replacing the existing Kampong Chai Chee Community Centre, Bedok Sports and Recreation Centre (SRC) and swimming complex. The current SRC will be used for housing developments and a new stadium.
Lastly, an 11km heritage foot trail will be built. Tracing the old Upper Changi Road, it contains information boards on the area’s history and links up famous food spots at Simpang Bedok and Siglap.
Bedok Food Center has just completed its upgrading programme from its original hut which was built in 1965. As the area used to be a Malay Kampung (village) in the 1980s, the new Bedok Food Centre has a Malay kampung design theme. The predominant design feature for this new food centre is its roof forms. High pitch roofs are tiered down with big overhangs for maximum ventilation and rain protection. Two main feature roofs are at the two entrances to welcome visitors. Malay motif patterns are also created at the roof fascia to enhance the theme of the place. The individual food stalls are arranged around a central courtyard to reflect kampung-style community living.
Bedok Food Court is famous for its fried Prawn Mee, Fragrance Cheng Terng and Cuttlefish Eng Chai. The Bedok Food Centre lies at the junction of Upper East Coast and Bedok Roads. The old Bedok Seafood was opposite the road and current Bedok Camp was built on reclaimed land just next to the old seafood centre and then also was on sandy beach.
1 year and $4 million investment from the National Environment Agency's (NEA) later the newly refurbished food centre and market at Block 538, Bedok North Street 3, is brighter and breezier than before. Whilst renovation works were in progress, the market and hawker stalls moved to a temporary facility steps away.
Under the NEA Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme, 91 of the 109 markets and hawker centres it manages have been upgraded since February 2001. Another two centres at Block 531A Upper Cross Street and Block 210 Toa Payoh Lorong 8 are currently undergoing renovation. At the Block 538 centre, improvements were made to the plumbing, electrical system, tiles, toilets and fire safety features. Stalls were made larger and more seats were added, including spaces at handicapped-friendly tables.
