All things ancient and old are fading out and disappearing as we speak. The same goes for cheese, traditional ways of herding animals are gone and the historical ways of making and aging cheese are lost and forgotten. Farmers and cheesemakers are not able to survive the economic pressures of operating in the traditional way.
There is a small group of cheesemakers though, who still insist on doing things the old way (the only way they find acceptable despite every hurdle they face). They are few and far between; and for the sake of the animals, they are found in the mountain ranges and the country. Getting to them is a struggle in itself but finding and tasting the cheese as it should be makes it all worthwhile.
The Cheese Ark gathers rare cheese that are on the brink of being phased out by time and evolution. These are from cheesemakers who belong to the Slow Food Presidia that protects unique regions and ecosystems and recovers traditional methods that are at risk of disappearing. More than just artisanal cheese, these are cheese that are about to be extinct if nothing is done.
They believe that to save the cheese, all we need to do is to eat the cheese. Every bit of cheese sold gives them the money and assurance they need to grow and make more wonderful cheese.
Set in an imaginary Utopia, I.E. takes the best of traditional materials and vintage chic to create a style that embraces the world’s cultures, evoking an old-world romanticism with a gypsy soul.

HEAR Records is a new independent Music lifestyle store which started out with a passion for Music and social matters.
With the modern trend of downloading and buying on-line, they believe that in order to bring more people back to "real" music and to physically purchase music at a store (as buying on-line doesn’t quite have the same thrill as searching for your favorite piece and will ultimately kill the passion in music), they provide you with selections that appeal at prices that are reasonable.
Some might say that Vinyl gives you a better appreciation of cover art - SEE, and some might say that Vinyl gives you a better sound - HEAR, to them it’s the overall experience – FEEL. Vinyl is a better medium when compared against MP3 and CD to provide you with a sense of ownership enabling a deeper appreciation of the album. Most people can't remember their first MP3 download but they will always remember their first vinyl. We live in a digital world but we will always have Analogue hearts. Hear Records is the local distributor of Music Hall turntables & electronics and Art Vinyl flip frame. They stock a wide range of new releases, re-issues and used LPs of different genres.
Experience Music Hall turntables, Music Hall LLC was founded in USA in April 1985. It is a company dedicated to manufacturing, importing and distributing well priced, top quality, high-end audio components. Its emphasis is almost exclusively 2-channel (stereo); a rarity in this day of iPods and multi-channel products. It has grown over the years to become one of the pre-eminent distribution and manufacturing companies in the industry. Music Hall manufactures its own range of turntables in the Czech Republic. These are produced in a factory that has been making turntables for over 50 years. All Music Hall turntables come fitted with arms, cartridges and dust covers. They consistently make the "Recommended Components" list in Stereophile Magazine. The Music Hall turntables and electronics are most famed for their value for money and high quality.
Be amazed by ART Vinyl's original way of displaying your favorite vinyl records. ART Vinyl was founded in London, England in 2005, perfect for music or art enthusiasts and those with an eye for stylish interior design. With the record frame's unique design, you can also change over your vinyl record display within seconds, without having to remove the frame from the wall. The frames have a unique quick release system; simply press the catch at the top and they hinge open. Art vinyl understand that no two records are alike; with this in mind their Play and Display frames are specially designed and manufactured to compensate for differences in the thickness of LP or 12" records when displayed in the frame. This is achieved thanks to the unique "sponge finger" system on the back of the Flip Frame, which ensures that any 12" record will fit comfortably and securely inside.

Jointly created by Yale University and the National University of Singapore, Yale-NUS College is the first college campus established by Yale outside of New Haven, Conn. The campus opens in 2015 and is designed to achieve the highest rating under the Green Mark, Singapore's benchmark for sustainable design.
Comprising three residential colleges for 1,000 students, the campus balances the traditions of Yale with the cultural and climatic influences of Southeast Asia. Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects developed a contemporary architectural language of clear and inviting processional entrances, sun and rain-screened colonnades and roof forms with generous eaves.
Set in a lush landscape, the 62,000-square-meter campus is comprised of courtyards punctuated by residential towers and a community of learning and social spaces. At its heart is a campus green flanked by academic and administrative buildings, including the learning commons, auditorium, sports hall, and an open-air, sheltered gathering place, the Agora.
The signature gates of the Yale campus are reinterpreted with metalwork patterns inspired by Southeast Asian textiles.
At the main entrance, glass-enclosed stairwells and a colonnade are topped by an inward-sloping roof of grand scale. At the center of the roof is a square oculus, which sends a dramatic cascade of rainwater into a large circular reflecting pool below.
The heart of the campus is a lush garden and arboretum with six heritage trees and an eco-pond that will capture and filter rainwater. At opposite sides of the central green space will be academic and administrative buildings to include a library, performance complex, science labs and sports center. The Learning Commons, which contains the library and a multi-media center, will be set on a slope to symbolize the pinnacle of knowledge.

The Royal Mail Restaurant & Bar is a 60-seater establishment that serves modern interpretations of classic British cuisine where roasts and prime rib take centre stage.
Located at was formerly known as The Asia Insurance building, it was named after a vintage brass mail chute made by the Cutler Mail Chute Company. Designed as the world's first high-rise mail chute and depository, and patented in 1883 by James Cutler, it stands in its full glory by the lift lobby of the Ascott Raffles Place, a romantic artefact from bygone days of letter-writing.
Dr. Ng Keng Siang, one of the first Singaporeans to become a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, designed the Art Deco-styled building, clad in luxurious beige travertine, and topped by a three-tiered scalloped stainless steel crown. The crown, that creates a visual peak and adds a touch of grandeur to the building, was intended to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Completed in 1955, the building was the tallest building in Southeast Asia at 18 storeys tall. This grand old dame was also the first modern high-rise office to be designed and built in Singapore after the ravages of World War II and was symbolic of the economic recovery of the nation and its blossoming position as a financial centre.
This rich heritage is the inspiration for The Royal Mail concept, providing guests with a touch of old world elegance from the days of letter-writing, Doris Day, Grace Kelly and policemen in shorts.
The specialty roast prime rib is served in three variations of succulent thickness. The English cut, their classic cut and The Royal Mail cut for the big eaters. For guests who would prefer not to have beef, there is also the juicy roast spring chicken, cider and honey roast boneless leg of lamb, butter poached maine lobster and more. Vegetarians would be relieved to know that there are also delicious options available such as the ox heart tomato and aged parmesan tart and butternut and spring pea risotto.
Check out some extraordinary images of Green Architecture and Design which we have come across and which we at GreatNewPlaces.com hope will inspire property developers, architects, students, building managements, multinationals and governments to explore every possibility of replicating in Singapore.
Singapore is certainly ahead of the game in Asia with initiatives from schemes which drive Singapore's construction industry towards more environment-friendly buildings.
It is intended to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise environmental awareness among developers, designers and builders when they start project conceptualisation and design, as well as during construction.
This can have positive effect on corporate image, leasing and resale value of buildings.

Mad About Vintage is a new blog featuring vintage furniture that are art deco and retro in design. They are a tad different in how they operate because they allow you to view first online, reserve it and then decide. Let us explain.
How It Works:
The furniture will be posted on the blog before their arrival and if you like what you see, you can reserve the piece/s by dropping them an email with the product code (very important). No deposit is needed and it operates under the ‘first-come-first-served’ basis. When the furniture arrives, priority to purchase will be given to the first in the queue.
Once the furniture is here, you will be contacted and you need to make a decision within 5 days (not working days) from the call. Their aim is to reach out to as many genuine buyers so a maximum of 3 items can be reserved under your name. They trust you will act in good faith.
The furniture will be stored in Extra Space Self Storage building located at 7 Kaki Bukit Road 2, just opposite Ubi Driving Centre, where you can see them before making your final decision. Parking is free but because entering into the storage area require security code, you need to be escorted. Please contact Hans via his mobile if you wish to view the products.
Singapore's longest man-made waterway will be open to visitors from October 23. The 4.2 kilometre-long My Waterway@Punggol features five bridges, bringing visitors closer to the water. Punggol waterway was created out of barren land, and connects Punggol Reservoir to Serangoon Reservoir.
But the area has been given a facelift, making it a scenic spot for a slew of leisure activities. Visitors can relive old memories of Punggol along the way, by stopping at this rest stop, which was an old bus stop in the area.
As the waterway is man-made, the challenge for the Housing & Development Board was how to keep the waterway clean and teeming with life. This is done through a series of eco features - such as an eco-drain that cleanses surface run-off water before it is discharged into the waterway.
Aerators have also been installed to enhance the water quality.

Designed by ONG&ONG this stunning house is located at Faber Park. The most attention-grabbing detail of this project is the dark grey metal cladding used generously on the external facade, which oozes with modern, edgy vibes. Its sharp and well-defined sides create a chic and unique face to this otherwise conventional family home.
To complement the edgy nature of the exterior, plenty of natural materials such as timber-teak and teak strips were used liberally throughout the entirety of the house, displayed tastefully on the walls, flooring or furniture.
A colossal, spiral staircase greets one in the immaculate interior, commanding a strong visual axis. This forms the focal point of the entire house.
Also, in line with an eco-friendly theme, a skylight was constructed in the basement, which enables natural sunlight to stream in and illuminate the house’s interior space while also keeping it warm on the occasional cold day.

Back in the 1960s, C.P. Lim and his brother C.K. Lim opened two souvenir stores located near British army bases, one in Jalan Kayu and another in Changi Village.
They became very popular and they expanded the business to include Lim’s Arts & Crafts in Holland Village. With the expansion of their product range into home furnishings and fashion, they eventually changed the name to what is now Lim’s Arts & Living. And they still sell souvenirs!
Since their very first days in Chicago at 10 West Madison Street, Garrett Popcorn Shops has maintained their dedication to fresh, hot-air popped popcorn. They continue to use only the highest quality ingredients, and Garrett Popcorn Shops never uses fat or oils in the popping process. They know that their popcorn costs more to make, but their CaramelCrisp® and CheeseCorn are worth it. They’re sure you’ll agree....
They start with their privately grown blend of kernels, pop them right before your eyes (guaranteeing freshness!) and then gently fold them into their three generations old, secret family recipe. This commitment to their recipe also extends to their suppliers and their highest quality ingredients. In fact, they are proud of their long-standing relationship with their suppliers - many of whom date back to their first days in Chicago.
For over half a century Garrett Popcorn Shops has focused on fresh, delicious, comfort food. They limit their popcorn based selections to Plain Popcorn, Buttery Popcorn, CaramelCrisp® (which you can choose to be blended with cashews, macadamias or pecans) and CheeseCorn. Their simple menu allows us them focus on what they do best: deliver an honest product that generates lines of historic proportions outside of their retail locations. It’s all part of the fun, part of the mix, part of the tradition ....you never know who you’ll meet in line.
Customer satisfaction remains their highest priority. Twenty years ago they received requests to produce a mix of their CaramelCrisp® and CheeseCorn. Their customers were right - the sweet and salty combination is wildly pleasing. Originally called "The Mix", customers also inspired its new name, "The Chicago Mix," again reflecting their commitment to Chicago and to tradition.
In 2002, Oprah selected "The Chicago Mix" as one of her "Favorite Things" exclaiming, "It is so good! I love when you mix the cheese with the caramel!" Again in 2005 Garrett was selected as one of Oprah’s "Favorite Things" in a holiday show dedicated to the relief workers of Hurricane Katrina.
Garrett Popcorn Shops have always been a family-based company, and today’s management is no different. Their families are much like your families. They lead busy, engaged, and full lives. They value convenience, and they know you do too. To respond to their contemporary fast-paced lives, Garrett Popcorn Shops has made it easier to order their product online. All of their products, including their new gift cards, can be ordered efficiently with a couple of clicks of a mouse.
Visit them online or now you can visit them at a new prime location right outside Liat Towers on Orchard Road.
The $6.4 million Aquatic Science Center (ASC), the first of its kind in Asia, which will see the collaboration of scientists from various disciplines – including environment and social sciences, hydrodynamics, engineering and policy – has been newly launched by the Singapore Delft-Water Alliance (SDWA), a joint research initiative between the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore’s national water agency Public Utilities Board (PUB), and Dutch research institute Deltares.
The research activities at the ASC will enable SDWA to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to further enhance the quality and supply of freshwater in Singapore. They are also very excited to elevate their partnership with Deltares to new heights in order to provide research and specialist consultancy services in water management.
In addition to training, sharing knowledge and educating the public on sustainable urban water management issues, the state-of-the-art research facility – strategically located along a park connector along Sungei Ulu Pandan with an “open” concept to encourage interaction between visitors and researchers – will also focus on fundamental and applied aspects on water management such as bioremediation, biosorption, ecotoxicological studies, interaction of flow, and biota.
Water from local catchments is a pillar of Singapore’s sustainable water supply. Singapore’s strategy has always been to create estuarine reservoirs by damming the major rivers so as to catch as much stormwater as possible for water supply. Although today’s technologies can treat all water to drinking standards that meet the World Health Organization’s requirements, we need to find more ways to keep the stormwater we collect as clean as possible. Other than engaging people who live and work in the water catchment area to be water guardians, we also turn to R&D. Having a center that can mimic nature will help us find sustainable solutions to urban freshwater management.
The ASC initiative originated in July 2008; construction started in 2009. With an area of about 6,700 square meters, the ASC features a 95-meter long transparent roof (which collects water and promotes natural air circulation, thus minimizing the use of air-conditioners), rainwater collection points and in-house water treatment capabilities.
Earlier this year, the facility was awarded the Green Mark GoldPlus by the Singapore Building and Construction Authority (BCA).
This newly opened eatery serves up a gourmet selection of casual American fare with lashings of creativity and decent portions to boot.
They're currently only open for dinner Tuesday - Sunday from 6pm - midnight but at least they serve food late which is great for all of us who think Singapore has limited quality dining options after 10pm.
Check out the beautiful vintage re-upholstered chairs and tables which have been imported from Bali. Very eye-catching and art-deco. There’s also a good-sized bar which serves an array of specialty cocktails concocted especially to match the Hummerstons menu.

Art Plural Gallery, the brainchild of Swiss art dealer Frédéric de Senarclens, is a 12,000-square-foot space in a newly renovated, four-story Art Deco building, with a distinctive Manhattan gallery feel.
The modern and contemporary gallery, recently opened in Singapore’s budding arts district, is the latest bid to help the city-state become an arts destination hub in Asia. It sits across the street from the Peranakan Museum, two national museums and nearby contemporary arts center Substation and the School of the Arts.
For Mr. de Senarclens, Art Plural Gallery marks his entry to Asia. He and his wife relocated to Singapore in 2008 to develop an Asian client base. He says those relationships are forming, particularly among Singapore’s growing community of Indian and Chinese collectors – but it’s been a slow process.
“Art Stage Singapore in January was our tipping point,” said Mr. de Senarclens, referring to the influx of collectors at Singapore’s first international contemporary art fair. “That same week we saw this space and thought it could become a flagship for Singapore and a destination for the region.”
The inaugural exhibition, titled “Avant Premiere,” offers 80 works from 21 artists. Better-known names include Pablo Picasso, Chu Teh-Chun, Julian Schnabel, Marc Quinn and Fernando Botero. Lesser-known artists include Swiss sculptor Yves Dana and American twins Doug and Mike Starn. Prices range from $5,800 for a print by Pakistani artist Seher Shah, to S$3 million for Picasso’s “Mousquetaire.”
Mr. de Senarclens says he is committed to having a “plurality” of international art and intends to promote local artists, along with rising Indian and Chinese artists such as Indian-born Rina Banerjee. Upcoming exhibits include a solo show by China’s Qiu Jie.
“Some people say we’re early opening this sort of gallery here, but I don’t think so,” says Mr. de Senarclens, likening Singapore’s art scene to New York in the 1970s. “Collectors here are passionate. This city is alive.”
