The group revealed its multi-million-dollar renovation plans for its retail and cinemas in December and it;s the third cinema chain here to upgrade its theatres this year following Golden Village and Shaw Theatres. Golden Village revamped its 18-year-old multiplex in Yishun and added digital projection and 3-D technology to three of its 10 halls. The cineplex reopened recently after the $5 million upgrade.
Shaw Theatres is also spending more than $16 million to add three new halls to its original eight at flagship cineplex Lido, which has been operating since 1993. The cineplex closed in October and is due to open in April. Eng Wah has been operating in Singapore since the 1940s. Work has already started for Eng Wah's renovation project. Its theatres at Jubilee and Toa Payoh have been shuttered for good but the entertainment centres will be renovated and new retail tenants added.
The cinemas at Empress, which have been closed for four years, are also being renovated now and will reopen as the operator's biggest cineplex with 10 halls and 1,300 seats in 2012. It will also be redeveloped as Empress Entertainment Centre, a shopping mall that will include the upgraded cineplex.

Gattopardo serves contemporary Italian and Mediterranean cuisine with a charcoal grill and wood-fired oven for baking gourmet pizzas. Diners can expect a different and refreshing style of cooking from Chef Lino who brings his 25 years of culinary experience to the fore – creating a rich variety of original dishes with varying depth of flavours that will satisfy even the most discerning palate.
Signature dishes include Amberjack with Sea Urchin Vinaigrette, Angel Hair Pasta with Grey Mullet “Bottarga” Roe and Sea Urchin, and specialty handmade pastas using the freshest ingredients and seafood. It may seem surprising for some, but Lino Sauro, one of the top chefs in Singapore specializing in Sicilian cuisine, spent a good 10 years of his life not having an ounce of liking for his profession.
Born in Sicily (South of Italy), young Lino started cooking at the age of 15. To him then, it was simply an occupation which would get him out of the house and enable him to do what he loved best – travelling. His work subsequently brought him all around the world where he had the opportunity to work with top chefs – some of whom were awarded the sought-after Michelin-star. With an insatiable penchant for further knowledge, he also delved deep into various food subjects by exchanging pointers with fellow chefs and reading a wide range of culinary books. This is why Chef Lino likes to call himself a “self-taught” chef. Through these exposures, he gained invaluable experiences and deeper insights into the culinary world and started to develop an appreciation and love for the art of cooking.
Lino then went on to become the Head Chef of fine dining "Capannina" restaurant at the 4-star Hotel & Resort Du Lac et du Park in Northern Italy– where he continued to redefine his cooking style. In 2006, determined to broaden his culinary horizon, he came to Singapore and was soon asked to be the Resident Chef of DOMVS in Sheraton Towers, where he implemented a menu that provided an authentic taste of his native Sicily.
Helming the kitchen of Gattopardo, Chef Lino now showcases an innovative menu featuring Mediterranean cuisine using the freshest top quality ingredients prepared with minimum fuss. He is no doubt excited about putting his culinary experiences to good use and bring out the best of Southern Italian cuisine to Singaporeans with lots of Sicilian sizzle!
The Hotel Fort Canning building is the result of the restoration of a former British Military structure. The military building was built in 1926 as the Administration Building of the British Far East Command HQ. The General-Officer-Commanding, Lieutenant-General Percival, had an office in this building. The building was occupied by the Japanese Military during the Occupation (1942-1945). The British Military took it back after the war and used it as part of the British Military Administration.
The building was taken over by the Singapore Armed Forces when Singapore became independent. In 1970, the building was used by the Singapore Command & Staff College (SCSC). In 1976, the SCSC moved out of the building, and it remained unoccupied until 1995, when it housed the Fort Canning Country Club. The Legends Fort Canning Park took over the premises in November 2002, and on 1 November 2010, it the restored heritage building re-opened as Hotel Fort Canning, the hotel wing of The Legends Fort Canning Park.
An urban oasis, the 86-room Hotel Fort Canning promises a unique sojourn. Presenting all of the amenities of a 5-star city-resort inclusive of state-of-the-art gym equipment by Techno-Gym, renowned Thai Spa operator - Thann; outstanding food & beverage outlets including Gattopardo Italian Grill & Pizza Bar by the Garibaldi Group of Restaurants; two full-sized swimming pools and extensive meeting facilities, Hotel Fort Canning epitomizes the concept "urban oasis meets heritage hotel".
Surrounded by the lush greenery of a historical park, this unique setting straddles not only the Orchard Road shopping belt, the Clarke Quay entertainment hub, but also the Central Business District, and the Civic District. All in all - a most coveted address.
Hotel Fort Canning’s location in a City Park is truly central – to one side is Orchard Road, the main shopping drag and the Champs Elysees of Singapore; to another is the Clarke Quay Entertainment Hub, where myriad bars and restaurants can be found; and yet on another side is the Museums & Civic District, with at least 4 major museums within walking distance!
Nature may not be the first thing one associates with Singapore's prime shopping belt, but the Butterfly Trail at Orchard Road hopes to change this.
Professor Tommy Koh launched the first phase of the Butterfly Trail a project to highlight Singapore's urban biodiversity, with 900 shrubs and 24 trees planted along Nassim Road. With them included nectar plants, which will attract butterflies to the area.
Experts hope up to 50 species will find their way to the trail. There is also the butterfly walk, a four kilometer trail from the Botanic Gardens to Fort Canning Park that aims to increase interest in nature.
