Commissioned by the Housing and Development Board as an exploration of the future of affordable public housing, WOHA‘s public housing design for Skyville @ Dawson consists of 960 new homes. Their project is currently under construction and is estimated to be completed by February 2015. The design focuses on 3 themes – community, variety and sustainability.
There is a variety of community space. Each home is part of a Sky Village: 80 homes which share a naturally ventilated community terrace and garden. The block is composed of 3 villages, stacked 4 high, for a total of 12 villages. Other community areas include: the Community Living Rooms at ground level, which provides seating areas overlooking the park and is located on the main entrance route of the development; the Landscaped Park, which retains enormous historic rain trees and provides two community pavilions, play and fitness areas, courts and lawns; the Rooftop Park, which houses a 400m jogging track and rooftop pavilions which support a PV array that powers the common lighting; the Urban Plaza, located along a public linear park and provides supermarket, coffee shop and retail spaces.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The design gives variety by offering you flexible floor plans with a column free and beam free main space, eliminating waste and allowing diverse lifestyles, such as home office or loft living as well as future flexibility.
SkyVille has been awarded Singapore’s Green Mark Platinum rating, the highest rating possible. The project uses passive means and avoids the use of energy-intensive solutions rather than using high technology. Every unit is fully naturally ventilated, with every room (including bathrooms and kitchens) having windows. The common areas, lift lobbies and access walkways are all naturally ventilated and lit. The apartments are cross ventilated, with CFD simulations performed at the block and unit level. The units use passive means for comfort – all walls have vertical and horizontal sun breakers to shade both the walls and the windows, all windows have overhangs and special mid-height top hung panels that direct breeze to seating height and allow the windows to remain open during the monsoon period, the units face north and south and have openings on all sides.
PV cells at the rooftop power the common areas and a swale which is a major landscape feature treats storm water before discharging it to the storm water system. The project uses landscaping throughout the tower in the sky villages, additionally it covers 50% of all roof surfaces. Two major landscaped external spaces totaling 1.5Ha are provided.

Oasia Downtown, designed by WOHA, sets out to create an alternative imagery for commercial high-rise developments. It combines innovative ways to intensify land use with a tropical approach that showcases a perforated, permeable, furry, verdant tower of green in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District.
In programmatic response to the client’s brief of having distinct Soho, Hotel & Club rooms, WOHA adopted a club sandwich approach by creating a series of different strata, each with its own sky garden. Introducing layers of elevated ground levels allow the precious but limited ground floor space to be multiplied, creating generous public areas for recreation and social interaction throughout the high-rise.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Sited within a densely built up area, the tower carves out its own internal spaces and dynamic views instead of relying on external vistas for visual interest. Each sky garden is treated as an urban scale verandah, sheltered at high level by the preceding sky garden and open sided for formal and visual transparency. The openness also allows wind to pass through the building for good cross-ventilation. Large scale High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans are incorporated as kinetic sculptures that complement the sky garden design and ensure thermal comfort. In this way the public areas become functional, comfortable tropical spaces with greenery, natural light and fresh air instead of enclosed, internalized air conditioned spaces.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Landscaping is used extensively as an architectural surface treatment and forms a major part of the development’s material palette both internally and externally, achieving an overall Green Plot Ratio of 750%. The building form is softened by a living green façade of creepers and flowering plants, creating an alternative image distinct from the surrounding glassy towers of the CBD, one that is tropical, urbanistically sensitive and humanistic.

Macha House has opened it's very first outlet at Orchard Central.
Macha, a finely milled green tea has been associated with the tradition of Japanese tea ceremony. Different from a common green tea powder, Macha is much more refined, richer in aroma and has a smoother texture, besides the abundance of health benefits it brings.
From the Tang Dynasty in China to the Song Dynasty and later formed into a ritual by Zen Buddhists, Macha has been enjoyed throughout history. With the introduction of Macha House, this fine blend can be enjoyed locally at Orchard Central.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The concept of Macha House is the brain child of the chairman of the company, Mr Hitoshi Goto. Mr Goto enjoys a good cup of Macha and his passion to share health benefits with his friends has led to the creation of the brand.
The traditional ways of the Macha is authentically brought over to Singapore. The Dorayaki is one of the specialities you’ll be able to enjoy that represents Japanese sweets arranged with a western fusion of style alongside their other deliciously blended green tea beverages.

Located at the key gateway into the Central Business District and Raffles Place financial hub, the hotel features lush greenery spanning a total of 15,000 square metres of impressive sky gardens, reflecting pools, waterfalls, planter terraces and green walls.

Amongst its other green features are rainwater and natural light harvesting, energy-efficient air conditioning systems, automatic sensors to regulate energy and water usage as well as carbon monoxide levels, along with solar cells to power landscape lighting.

Recognised for its holistic and innovative approach to integrate solar energy into the design, the hotel is one of the first amongst Singapore hotels to feature a solar energy system. The design for this Malaysian-Singaporean joint venture actively engages the space of the surrounding city to form a new civic nucleus in Singapore’s modern metropolis. The two towers are not conceived as autonomous objects, but defined by the spaces they create around them.
The design for DUO subtracts circular carvings from the allowable building volumes in a series of concave movements that generate urban spaces, a kind of "urban poché" that co-opts adjacent buildings and symbiotically inscribes the two towers into their context.
| |
| |
| |
| |
By generating the massing through a subtractive process, the elevations of the new towers are reduced to slender profiles. Vertical facades rise skywards along the adjoining roads, while a net-like hexagonal pattern of sunshades reinforces the dynamic concave shapes. The duo of tower volumes is further sculpted to feature a series of cantilevers and setbacks that evoke choreographed kinetic movements of the building silhouettes.
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
The buildings dematerialize as they reach the ground to provide a porous permeable landscape traversing the site. Leisure zones and gardens act as a connector between multiple transport hubs and establish a flow of tropical greenery and lively commercial activity, accessible to the public 24 hours a day. A plaza, carved into the center of the towers and integrating the neighboring building as part of its perimeter, forms a new public nexus between the historic district of Kampong Glam and the extension of the city’s commercial corridor.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Multiple levels of vertical connectivity give access to large elevated terraces for the hotel and residents, a public observation deck and a sky restaurant atop the office/hotel tower, while establishing a direct connection to the adjacent underground MRT subway station. Vehicular traffic is lifted off the ground to allow an uninterrupted pedestrian circulation. Extensive landscape areas at the ground levels, elevated terraces and roofscapes provide accessible green space equal to 100% of the site area.
Construction is scheduled to start in 2013, with completion pencilled in for 2017.

Two new Learning Hubs, eight new Residential Halls, a new Graduate Hall and two additions to the academic buildings in NTU are in the pipeline at NTU’s Yunnan Garden campus in the next three years.

The new halls will also include movable partitions for flexible configurations and easy access to power and Internet connection from outdoor areas such as gazebos.
The Master Plan also unveils a soon-to-be iconic building, the Learning Hub, conceived by renowned English designers Heatherwick Studio. A private family residence designed by K2LD Architects, situated on a uniquely shaped triangular plot, the Winged House frames the site with two prominent forms: the trapeziums. These forms open towards the main view at the back of the site where 3 existing majestic palms are, and of lush greenery. These embracing forms carve out and frame a middle garden for friendly and private gatherings.
| |
| |
| |
| |
In response to the tropical climate context, the formal exploration took a turn from cutting openings from a pure trapezoid form to separating roof from form. The form draws from the understanding of traditional Malay architecture where the house itself is climatically responsive to bring you comfort. The form of the traditional Malay house is reinterpreted into folding trapeziums whilst keeping its climatic purpose of bringing in fresh air into its interior space. Elements such as the extended overhanging eaves and the double pitched roof are adopted into the form. The extended overhanging eaves are manifested in the form of extensive roof overhangs for the naturally ventilated spaces, which are enjoyed with much shelter and shade even during the seasonal heavy rain downpours.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The traditional double pitched roof is translated into the separation and staggering of the roof form. This split of the roof achieved a play of light and shadows into the interior space. Spaces such as the double volume dining room, the 2nd storey passageway and the large patio are all celebrated with the overlapping split roof and its light play. This slot is further enhanced at night with concealed light fittings illuminating the split. The staggered roof form also creates for the possibility of the penetration of natural ventilation into the living spaces.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Materiality is key to strengthening the relationship of the two winged forms, its space in-between and roof on roof. In the intermediate space between two forms is the main entrance foyer and living room which is flanked with two feature natural split granite walls, contrasting its heavy presence with the lightness of the roofs and vertical timber lines of the house. Timber is extensively used throughout the house, choosing a lighter species of timber (Burmese Teak) for the underside of the roofs versus the darker wood (Chengai) as the infill medium (ie: the sun-shading screens) to create a play of depth of the façade. The vertical timber screens not only help in providing shade from the harsh sun, but it helps blend the house with the lush vertical tree trunks of the surrounding greenery.

Comprising three residential colleges for 1,000 students, the campus balances the traditions of Yale with the cultural and climatic influences of Southeast Asia. Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects developed a contemporary architectural language of clear and inviting processional entrances, sun and rain-screened colonnades and roof forms with generous eaves.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Set in a lush landscape, the 62,000-square-meter campus is comprised of courtyards punctuated by residential towers and a community of learning and social spaces. At its heart is a campus green flanked by academic and administrative buildings, including the learning commons, auditorium, sports hall, and an open-air, sheltered gathering place, the Agora.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The signature gates of the Yale campus are reinterpreted with metalwork patterns inspired by Southeast Asian textiles.
At the main entrance, glass-enclosed stairwells and a colonnade are topped by an inward-sloping roof of grand scale. At the center of the roof is a square oculus, which sends a dramatic cascade of rainwater into a large circular reflecting pool below.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The heart of the campus is a lush garden and arboretum with six heritage trees and an eco-pond that will capture and filter rainwater. At opposite sides of the central green space will be academic and administrative buildings to include a library, performance complex, science labs and sports center. The Learning Commons, which contains the library and a multi-media center, will be set on a slope to symbolize the pinnacle of knowledge.

Tamarind Hill, renowned in the Malaysian dining scene for over 12 years, has now made its way to Singapore. Perched a top Labrador Nature Reserve, the restaurant is reminiscent of the original Tamarind Hill in Kuala Lumpur, preserving the milieu of being in a stand-alone restored historical bungalow amid vast, lush surroundings.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The colonial bungalow, now fashioned with Tamarind's unmistakable neo- rustic charm, exudes a nostalgic and cosy ambiance. In a contemporary setting which preserves the old charm of the original house. You'll be lured into a domain of high ceilings decorated with 4-meter long chandeliers, candle lit wall lamps, modern Asian furniture and exquisite antiques. Enter a opulent mood, yet unpretentious that synchronizes in perfect harmony with the classic Thai flavours Tamarind Hill is best known for.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The restaurant's original layout spans 3 distinct dining areas over 12,000 square feet of space. Diners have much luxury of privacy, whether indoor in private corners or outdoor on the lanai which looks out to the sea. A unique feature of the restaurant is its colossal colonial-syle long bar that feeds the eyes as soon as one steps through the entrance. Where aperitifs and cocktails are served before or after dinner. You will dispose of an extensive wine list and creative concoctions.
Helmed by executive chef, Thiti Thammanatr, the restaurant offers a balance of simple and straightforward, unadorned traditional Siamese specialties along with a refined selection on the classics. One of the signature main courses not to be missed is the grilled Wagyu sirloin and foie gras topped with green curry reduction.
Chef Thiti, a culinary expert who's professionalism and experience span to 27 years, takes anecdotes of regional Thai cuisine and recreates it. You can expect on the menu the duck and lychee salad, a delicious salad that will whet your appetite. And an all-time favourite is the deep-fried river lobster served with Tamarind sauce. There is also an array of soup choices, crustaceans, meats and vegetables, all cooked with fresh and true ingredients to retain all authenticity, flavors and level of spiciness.
Tamarind Hill offers a unique venue for any occasion minutes from the city.

The Marina Bay District has garnered plenty of attention for its glittering new attractions, but the Central Business District is now getting a face lift of its own. SAA has unveiled One Raffles Place Tower 2, a sustainable LED-lit skyscraper poised to infuse vibrancy into the downtown core with full glass windows.
The landmark offers panoramic views of Singapore and multiple green features that enhance the quality of the working environment.
Guided by SAA's philosophy, the 38-storey office tower is designed with an urbanistic approach, giving much attention to its surrounding urban form. With its crystalline exterior, the new skyscraper not only creates a strong presence but further catalyses the transformation of the existing downtown core into a vibrant global business hub. By night, the tower's glass façade coupled with its lighting effects illuminates the night sky which enhances the attractiveness of the unique Singapore skyline for the district.
| |
| |
| |
| |
One Raffles Place Tower 2 harmoniously complements One Raffles Place Tower 1, formerly known as OUB Centre. The diagonal planes of the new building are inspired by the spacing of the windows in its counterpart. One Raffles Place Tower 2 was developed from a collaboration between SAA and Paul Noritaka Tange of Tange Associates, whose father Kenzo Tange had designed the original One Raffles Place Tower One, over two decades ago.
As a sustainable building, One Raffles Place Tower 2 seeks to create a serene, comfortable and welcoming environment in the CBD while minimising environmental cost. Some of its green features include: the extensive use of eco-friendly building products and materials within and outside the building, energy-saving light fittings, solar energy, a highly efficient central air conditioning system that regulates fresh air and provide quality air filtration for the office, and motion sensors to reduce unnecessary waste of energy.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The tower is a recipient of the Singapore Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Platinum award. Singapore's highest green building rating system that evaluates a building for its environmental impact and performance.
They believe that architecture goes beyond aesthetics. The design should add value to the urban environment. With its strategic location in the existing Central Business District, One Raffles Place Tower 2 injects a new form of urban energy at streets cape level. The overall design strategy for One Raffles Place Tower 2 is to produce a landmark that not only rejuvenates Singapore's changing cityscape but also creates a pleasurable working environment for its users.

The National Library will be home to the world’s first green library for kids in 2013. Planning to transform the kids section of the National Library into an eco-landscape.
Named “My Tree House”, the new library section is designed with environmental sustainability in mind, from its design and infrastructure. It is modelled after an enchanted forest, with spaces for hands-on learning.

The library has been designed to create an enchanted forest ambience with fun spaces for hands-on learning and reflections. “My Tree House” takes its name aptly after the centrepiece which is a tree house structure constructed with recyclable materials. It will evoke the feeling of a special place for children as featured in story books.

Targeted for completion in mid-2013, the library will be home to 70,000 books. About 30% of these books will focus on green topics such as animals, plants, nature, water resources, environment and climate change. NLB plans to work with other public agencies such as the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, National Climate Change Secretariat, National Environment Agency, National Parks Board and PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency in developing the library’s collection and on using the library for environmental education and outreach. A wide range of tailored activities like games, storytelling and craft-making to spur interest in children ages 4 to 12 are being planned. NLB is also gathering feedback and suggestions to customise the experience for child visitors. Members of the public can provide suggestions through email or forms at the library.

The Alkaff Mansion is located near the Henderson Bridge, on top of the Telok Blangah Green encompassing an area of 780 square metres and overlooking a beautiful park of 19 hectares with the sea down below. Thus the Mansion commands a panoramic view.
| |
| |
| |
| |
It was owned by the Alkaff family whose ancestors arrived in Singapore from Indonesia in 1852. The Alkaffs were great traders who had a lucrative business between India and Indonesia in spices, coffee and sugar. Later the Alkaffs were also involved in property business. The Mansion was built by Syed Abdul Rahman Alkaff who came to Singapore from Yemen. It was built primarily as a retreat for the Alkaff family and also to entertain their numerous clients and guests. The American guests use to refer to it as Mount Washington.
| |
| |
| |
| |
It is not clear why the Alkaff Mansion was abandoned after World War II and the Mansion went into a state of disrepair. In 1986 the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board became interested in the Mansion and awarded the restoration of this unique Mansion to Hotel Properties Limited to restore the past glory of the Mansion into a restaurant and yet retaining the old world charm of the Alkaffs.

Cut out a square of silk, a big square, a metre thirty by a metre thirty. On the silk, place an orchid, pose it. Draw it, paint it, recreate the precise graduation of colours, the blush on the bloom.
There are over thirty shades in your work, requiring over thirty passes through the printing press. You can pose a wave in the same way, or a fish, whatever your dreams of the Far-East inspire. The only condition is that it should be beautiful, that the composition holds. Nothing weak, nothing insipid; you are Leonard.
Unfurl the square; float the silk, fluttering and weightless, sending ripples through the image, the colours. Some bright, some darker, like life. Within the square, or two if necessary, outline a dress, a blouse, trousers, a tie... Or choose not to; outline nothing, let the square exist simply as a scarf. Adorn this printed silk with the body of a woman: that's Leonard.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Leonard is also a story, which stretches back nearly half a century, passing milestones of originality along the way. The first fully-fashioned printed pullovers.
The Leonard dress, 150 grammes of happiness, their first slogan. The invention of the silk-over. Kimonos; they are the first non-Japanese house, in over 2000 years, to have created a collection of traditional kimonos.
Shanghai, where they were the first western fashion house to organize a catwalk show, in 1993.
Lyon, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai and now Singapore: Leonard has its own geography. They face the Orient, looking down the Silk Road to find special inspiration in Asia. The influence is so strong at Leonard that they're beginning to believe their Japanese friends who tell them they've lived a past life in Asia.
| |
| |
| |
| |
And Leonard is also a family. Daniel Tribouillard, the President of the company and his two daughters, Nathalie and Virginie, work side by side, along with a dedicated team, all of them together enshrining the creative past and future of their House, artists, painters, stylists, seamstresses. They may be long-established, but they have young talent, and nothing gives them greater pleasure than discovering new treasures created by their novices.
Except perhaps one thing, which gives them even greater pleasure: in the course of an evening, on the street, on the beach, to see Leonard silk worn elegantly by an attractive woman, to see the Leonard orchid, fuchsia, lavender, lemon, golds, mauves and greens alive in a subtle harmony of movement. Subtle and light, as life should be. As it is, with Leonard.

Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE), a new S$120 million research centre at NTU, will harness the powers of micro-organisms for environmental and water sustainability.
The centre will look at innovative ways to process waste water efficiently and trapping greenhouse gases through the study of biofilms.
| |
| |
| |
| |
SCELSE already embarked on two flagship programmes in partnership with PUB, Singapore's national water agency, of which one involves analysing water samples from the Ulu Pandan wastewater reclamation plant to find a way to improve the treatment process.
| |
| |
| |
| |
SCELSE is an autonomous Research Centre of Excellence funded by National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore.
A contemporary main challenge is to ensure clean water and a sustainable environment. The biological processes essential for achieving this objective reside with the activities of complex microbial biofilm communities, which turn the wheels of all biogeochemical cycles in both natural and engineered systems.
| |
| |
| |
| |
SCELSE seeks to become a world leader in biofilm research, to manipulate microbial communities and to deliver the capability to harness or control biofilms, wherever required. Ensuring beneficial biofilm actions in, for eg. remedial processes in the environment, potable water production, and preventative health, will bring about significant economic benefits worldwide.
| |
| |
| |
| |
SCELSE aims to explore, understand and manage biofilm-driven processes based on state-of-the-art genomic, molecular and analytical tools and facilitate engineering and bioprocess platforms to translate this knowledge to achieve novel environmental solutions with small environmental footprints.
| |
| |
| |
| |
SCELSE will be a leader and participant in the drive to create an environmentally sustainable world for our future generations and position Singapore in the rapidly expanding sustainability industry.

The Golden Box an un-private house designed by K2LD Architects in Singapore.
The ground level living space is a 26 m long and 6 m wide column free space with 3-sided full-height glass panels exposing the user within. It brings in the views from the outside, taking advantage of the abundant greenery in the surroundings.
Behind the glass wall is a row of bamboo chosen for screening. It acts as a foreground for the floating golden mesh and serves as a backdrop for the people sitting in the living space.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The main feature of the house is the varying porosity of golden mesh. This golden mesh acts as a light veil over the private glassed areas of the 2nd storey. During the night, the screen dissolves and unveils the events within the house when the house is lit. It is a contemporary house embracing the idea of an open concept living – unabashedly inviting passers-by envious glances to luxurious living.

The $6.4 million Aquatic Science Center (ASC), the first of its kind in Asia, which will see the collaboration of scientists from various disciplines – including environment and social sciences, hydrodynamics, engineering and policy – has been newly launched by the Singapore Delft-Water Alliance (SDWA), a joint research initiative between the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore’s national water agency Public Utilities Board (PUB), and Dutch research institute Deltares.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The research activities at the ASC will enable SDWA to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to further enhance the quality and supply of freshwater in Singapore. They are also very excited to elevate their partnership with Deltares to new heights in order to provide research and specialist consultancy services in water management.
In addition to training, sharing knowledge and educating the public on sustainable urban water management issues, the state-of-the-art research facility – strategically located along a park connector along Sungei Ulu Pandan with an “open” concept to encourage interaction between visitors and researchers – will also focus on fundamental and applied aspects on water management such as bioremediation, biosorption, ecotoxicological studies, interaction of flow, and biota.

Water from local catchments is a pillar of Singapore’s sustainable water supply. Singapore’s strategy has always been to create estuarine reservoirs by damming the major rivers so as to catch as much stormwater as possible for water supply. Although today’s technologies can treat all water to drinking standards that meet the World Health Organization’s requirements, we need to find more ways to keep the stormwater we collect as clean as possible. Other than engaging people who live and work in the water catchment area to be water guardians, we also turn to R&D. Having a center that can mimic nature will help us find sustainable solutions to urban freshwater management.

The ASC initiative originated in July 2008; construction started in 2009. With an area of about 6,700 square meters, the ASC features a 95-meter long transparent roof (which collects water and promotes natural air circulation, thus minimizing the use of air-conditioners), rainwater collection points and in-house water treatment capabilities.
Earlier this year, the facility was awarded the Green Mark GoldPlus by the Singapore Building and Construction Authority (BCA).

Nestled in a quiet and serene corner of Punggol is Frienzie, a new Bistro & Bar that opened earlier this year. Sporting wholesome, value-for-money western fare, it has already become a popular destination for families and friends living in the area to gather. The place has become so popular that it is usually full by 7pm, even on weekdays. The restaurant takes reservations before 7pm. For drivers, there is also ample parking within the compound.

Al-fresco dining is also available and while the restaurant is open-air, it’s still very windy and cool. Gazing out at the un-spoilt beauty of nature, one almost feels as if this little jewel of a place is part of a paradise retreat and not part of Singapore at all.

Designed by Earl Monroe Magale, Hinn Ong, Jirawit Yamkleeb and Darren Yio, the Migratory Park tower will be located in the Orchard Road district of Singapore, one that’s characterized by high end malls and designer flagship stores.
Lucky Plaza serves as an important place for recreation and relaxation for the hardworking Filipinos, but the parks and open space in the vicinity are quickly disappearing because of Orchard Road’s valuable land prices.
The Migratory Park is a vertical green space that serves, then, as a tranquil place to gather for the migrant workers of Singapore, but also for local residents shopping in the area, and even migratory birds seeking to nest in a lush spot in the middle of the city’s bustle.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The tower is formed from two interlocking, star shaped helixes that house RC pods. The pods are green vegetation spaces that also catch rainwater.
A complex structuring of the pods within the tower brings the structure protection from both the sun and prying eyes wanting to see into the tranquil spaces within.
As a calm and clean place, the design of the Migratory Tower fits in with Singapore’s passion for neatness and its function brings a peaceful environment for the people of the city’s busy retail hub.

Recently, McDonald’s launched its new corporate mission geared towards the green movement: “McDonald’s strives to provide eco-friendly workplaces and restaurants that reflect our sustainability goals and demonstrate environmental stewardship in the workplace.”
The McDonald’s Restaurant @ Jurong Central Park opened for business on 1 May 2011. It is situated in the Jurong Central Park, a 8-ha regional park in the Jurong West area across from the Boon Lay MRT Station. The park is accessible via the Jurong and Jurong West Park Connectors.
It is the first park in Singapore to have life-sized board-game features (including Snakes and Ladders and Ludo based on the traditional indoor children's board-games). Visitors can enjoy the games outdoors using the dice tower built in the park for game play. Greenery, sculpted terrains and various play equipment are used to create the board-game features.

The park site retains its existing wetland, a habitat for wildlife species and dragonflies, to complement the existing plants at the site and bring visitors closer to nature. The wetland also serves as a habitat for birds and other wildlife species and helps bring nature back to the urban environment.
To blend into the greenery of the Park, the McDonald’s Restaurant in the Park has incorporated an extensive green roof. The entire mushroom-shaped roof is planted with a refreshing carpet of green, helping the McDonald’s Restaurant to be the first to be awarded the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award under the Restaurant Category.
Apart from enhancing aesthetic appearance and helping in assimilation into green surroundings, the greening of the roof helps to protect the rooftop waterproofing as well as the roof skin itself from extreme UV exposure. Ambient temperature is considerably reduced and the interior of the building kept cool, even though its exterior faces the full brunt of the sun. The restaurant is consequently able to save on energy consumption through lower air-conditioning requirements and to, also at the same time, mitigate Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE).
| |
| |
| |

Elmich Green Roof is the system that was selected for the greening of the mushroom-shaped roof of the McDonald’s Restaurant at Jurong Central Park.
VersiDrain® 25P water retention and drainage trays (the principal component of Elmich Green Roof) installed over the mushroom-shaped roof of the restaurant facilitate efficient drainage of excess water and allow water and soluble nutrients stored in the cells to be returned, via evaporation and capillary action, to the planting medium during dry periods. This effectively reduces irrigation frequency and maintains healthy plant growth. The resultant green roof blends seamlessly into the green environment of the Park.

A wonderful encapsulation of modern architecture can be seen at this brand new villa entitled Meera House by Guz Architects. This house was built and located in a new subdivision on the adjacent island of Sentosa to Singapore.
The plots on the island of Sentosa are not large and neighboring buildings are built close to the sides of each house. Thus their strategy was to build a solid wall to each side neighbor to provide privacy where possible, while creating a central light and stair well which would funnel the sea breeze through the centre of the building.
The front and rear of the building both have terraces backing onto each other allowing each storey to have visual or actual access to greenery. The intention was to try to allow each roof garden provide a base for the storey above allowing the layered effect to make each storey feel like it was a single storey dwelling sitting in a garden.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Each of the stories in the Meera House has been designed so that it appears to be a single story at ground level looking out on a grass lawn, as if it is situated at ground level. This makes for very grounding and human-scaled design focused around each garden.
Rimming each lawn is very proper British squared-off planting areas that echo Singapore’s colonial roots, and mitigating the view of the burgeoning growth of the city, seen across the bay.
Under the Meera House is a cleverly engineered cooling feature that Guz pioneered in the Fish House, and proved to be a workable solution to reduce energy use.
This underwater room centered beneath the house is cooled by the swimming pool and provides a very unique thermal sink to naturally moderate the temperature in the house, reducing the need for energy-wasting air conditioning. As far as we know, only Guz Architects makes double use of a swimming pool to reduce energy use in this way.
What a wonderful architecture idea and a call to sustainability as well!

Designed as a top tier business hotel and office in a garden, the Vertical Park Hotel at Upper Pickering Street demonstrates how we can not only conserve greenery in a built-up high-rise city centre but multiply it vertically in a manner that is architecturally striking, integrated and sustainable.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Located in central Singapore, the site is at a junction between the CBD and the colorful districts of Chinatown and Clark Quay, and faces Hong Lim Park. A contoured podium responds to the street scale, drawing inspiration from landscape formations. These contours are precast concrete elements of modular radii, allowing the complex, sculptural podium to be put together from a basic ‘kit of parts’.
| |
| |
| |
| |
On the ground the contours create dramatic outdoor plazas and gardens which flow seamlessly into the interiors. Greenery from the park is visually extended up into the building in the form of planted valleys, gullies and waterfalls. The landscaping also conceals openings to the above ground carparking while allowing in air and natural light. The top of the podium is a lush landscaped terrace housing the development’s recreational facilities, with infinity edge pools opening up unobstructed views of the city. Birdcage cabanas perched over the waters add interest and delight.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The high-rise blocks housing the hotel rooms and offices are arranged into an open-sided courtyard configuration, breaking up the mass and maximizing views and daylighting into the building. Blue and green glass recalls the water of the nearby Singapore River. The courtyards have contoured sky gardens every four storeys, which bring lush greenery directly to the rooms and continues the landscaping up the entire height of the building. Corridors, lobbies and common washrooms are designed as garden spaces with stepping stones, planting and water features which create an alluring resort ambiance with natural light and fresh air, instead of being 24-hour energy guzzling air conditioned spaces. Tall overhangs work together with leafy foliage to screen these spaces from the weather and direct sun.
| |
| |
| |
| |
A total of 15,000m2 of skygardens, reflecting pools, waterfalls, planter terraces and green walls were designed; this is double the site area or equivalent to the footprint of the adjacent Hong Lim Park. A diverse variety of species ranging from shade trees, tall palms, flowering plants, leafy shrubs and overhanging creepers come together to create a lush tropical setting that is attractive not only to the people but also to insects and birds, extending the green areas from Hong Lim Park and encouraging bio-diversity in the city.
| |
| |
| |
| |
These landscapes are designed to be self-sustaining and rely minimally on precious resources. Rainwater collected from upper floors irrigate planters on the lower floors by gravity supplemented by non-potable recycled Newater, which will also be used for all water features. Photovoltaic cell arrays on the roof will power reticulation systems and softscape lighting.

Sports enthusiasts, food lovers and families looking for recreational spots in the east will find it easier to get to their playgrounds. A new 3.8km green corridor linking up the popular East Coast Park with Bedok Town Centre, as well as Bedok Reservoir, will be built over the next five years.
| |
| |
| |
| |
This means one will be able to walk – taking about 20 minutes, or cycle directly from the MRT station or bus interchange in Bedok, to either of the two recreational spots. It is part of a larger ambitious makeover for the East Coast, and comes on top of previously announced plans for a revitalised Bedok town with a new food centre, an integrated sports complex, a mall and an air-conditioned bus interchange.
Also in the pipeline is a cycling network connecting schools, parks and MRT stations in an area stretching from Kaki Bukit to Tanah Merah. The makeover is part of the $1 billion second phase of the Remaking Our Heartland programme to rejuvenate mature estates over the next five years. The other two towns selected are Hougang and Jurong Lake.
Currently, there is no direct route for non-drivers to get from Bedok Reservoir to East Coast Park. They have to take buses or use the 6km Bedok Park Connector. Those coming from Bedok Town Centre have to traverse the expressway and roads via underpasses, or take a bus.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Now, the new cycling and pedestrian path, which runs parallel to Bedok North Avenue 1 and Bedok South Avenue 1, will cut travelling time. It will also be lined with gardens and sports facilities. Meanwhile, a new integrated sports facility will be built in Bedok North Street 1, replacing the existing Kampong Chai Chee Community Centre, Bedok Sports and Recreation Centre (SRC) and swimming complex. The current SRC will be used for housing developments and a new stadium.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Lastly, an 11km heritage foot trail will be built. Tracing the old Upper Changi Road, it contains information boards on the area’s history and links up famous food spots at Simpang Bedok and Siglap.

Bronte is a neighbourhood restaurant serving Australian comfort food.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The recently opened Bronte falls firmly in the latter category and is the latest in a growing list of places that have adopted a modern approach to the long-established concept of the family-run restaurant.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The simply decorated bistro-style restaurant is tucked in a row of F&B shophouse outlets in the Greenwood Avenue belt in Bukit Timah and is named not because the owners have any literary aspirations but because they have strong ties to Australia, where the attractive Sydney beach suburb of Bronte can be found.
| |
| |
| |
| |
“We wanted to name the restaurant after a Sydney suburb, and Bondi is better known but also a bit too obvious,” says Justin Wong, Bronte’s chef-in-residence, who runs the family-friendly restaurant together with his sister, brother and brother-in-law.

The second tower of Asia Square, Singapore, will commence construction this year, with the construction contract awarded to Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. (Hyundai E&C). This brings the total value of the construction of Asia Square to over S$1 billion. Hyundai E&C is currently overseeing the ongoing construction works of Asia Square Tower 1 which is scheduled for completion in June.
Designed by Australian architects Denton Corker Marshall, Asia Square is a comprehensive mixed use development of commercial and retail uses, and the first in the Marina Bay area to be fully integrated with a five-star business hotel. Tower 1 is a 43-storey office building with 38 floors devoted to Grade A office space. The first and second floors feature a mix of retail space and food and beverage outlets. Its companion, Asia Square Tower 2, will include 26 levels of Grade A office space. It will also house the luxury Westin hotel from level 32 to 46.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Each tower will provide a highly efficient, column-free floor plate of up to 3520m2 of office space. The development features a fully sheltered 9000m2 public plaza and 6500m2 of retail space. Tower 1 will be completed in June 2011, and Tower 2 is scheduled for completion in 2013. A 300,000m2 development consisting of twin towers rising out of an ‘ice block’ glass podium.
Asia Square is located in Singapore’s Marina Bay, an extension of the existing Central Business District. Marina Bay is an ambitious 360ha urban development project planned as a lifestyle precinct with projects like Asia Square contributing to Singapore’s position as a major business and financial hub in Asia.
Asia Square comprises an integrated mixed use development of office, hotel and retail uses together with a vibrant 9000m2 public plaza located within the glass podium. Urban and built spaces with excellent amenity are being created, which will connect to and reinforce the existing urban fabric of Singapore. Two elegantly articulated tower forms emerge from a simple, orthogonal, pedestrian-scaled podium. Each tower is seemingly composed of a cluster of eight slender shafts that individually rise to varying heights to create a distinctive signature on the Singaporean skyline.
The façade of the two towers comprises glass and metal panelling, granting uninterrupted views from within while producing a striking random patterned effect from outside. At night, lighting will achieve a ‘speckled’ effect. Encapsulating the entire site is the glass podium which, in contrast to the towers, is expressed as a singular, unifying element. It formally fronts the streets on all four faces and is conceived as an ‘ice block’ floating above the ground plane.

Asia Square Tower 1 is a 43-storey office building with 38 floors (94 per cent of floor area) devoted to Grade A office space. The first and second floors will feature a mix of retail space and food and beverage outlets. Its companion, the 46-storey Asia Square Tower 2, comprises 26 office levels surmounted by 15 levels of luxury hotel. Each provides a highly efficient, column-free floor plate of up to 3520m2 of office space, allowing some 450 people to be located on the same floor together with a multitude of private offices, conference areas and private lounges.
Designed to strict environmental criteria the project is the first commercial development in Singapore to be awarded LEED-CS Platinum pre-certification by the US Green Building Council and Green Mark Platinum rating from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority. Green features include Singapore's largest photovoltaic cell system installed on the roof of both towers, and the country's first downtown biodiesel generation plant for recycling waste cooking oil into biodiesel.
Other environmental features and systems incorporated in the design are:
- High performance façade
- Regenerative lifts
- Energy-efficient air-conditioning system which uses chilled water from the government’s District Cooling System - UV emitters incorporated in Air Handling Units (AHUs) to remove harmful airborne micro-organisms
- Energy-efficient lighting
- Motion detectors and photo sensors integrated with lighting control system
- Harvesting of condensate water from AHUs for irrigation of greenery
- Water-efficient fittings

Singapore Changi Airport aims to reduce consumption of electricity and use more of recycled water at its terminal buildings over the next three years, as part of its contribution towards environmental sustainability. As part of Changi Airport Group’s (CAG) plan to set up an Environmental Management System based on ISO 14001 standards, CAG has established a set of targets to cut energy use and to increase the proportion of recycled water used at Changi. This was announced at the launch of CAG’s ‘Changi Goes Green’ environment recently, in conjunction with Clean and Green Singapore.
Conserving Energy
Despite round the clock operations and increasing air traffic at Changi, CAG continues to put in conscious effort to conserve energy and increase its efficiency. Various initiatives have been implemented, including dimming lights at airport terminals by as much as 50% during off-peak hours, using natural lighting where possible, and installing motion sensors in areas such as toilets and offices to conserve electricity.
Currently, Changi Airport’s annual terminal building electricity consumption is about 450 million kWh. The established energy target sets the direction for CAG, as it continues to provide a first-class experience for its users in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly manner. The target will see Changi Airport reducing its terminal buildings’ electricity usage by about 13.5 million kWh, generating savings of about S$2.4 million over the next three years.

Recycling Water
Currently, already less than half of Changi Airport’s water usage comes from potable sources. Recycled water from rainwater is used for irrigating plants at Changi Airport’s nursery and external landscape areas, while NEWater is used for airport fire-fighting, sanitation and cooling of air conditioning chillers. Other efforts to conserve water include the installation of tap flow regulators in all toilet taps in the airport, which limit water flow from six litres per minute to two litres per minute. CAG will continue to explore means to increase the use of recycled water in its water resource management. The water target set will see Changi Airport increase the proportion of its recycled water usage from 55% to 58% over the next three years.
Beyond the energy and water targets, CAG aims to attain the BCA Green Mark Gold certification for Terminal 2 as well as the Singapore Environment Council’s Green Office Label for its corporate offices in 2011.
Planting of Changi Tree
The Changi tree or Hopea Sangal, which used to be a landmark of what is now known as the Changi area, has set its roots in Changi Airport. The tree was thought to be extinct in Singapore until its re-discovery in September 2002 when a 150 year old specimen was felled illegally. Through conservation efforts by National Parks and the Nature Society, saplings of the Changi tree can be found in the Singapore Zoological Gardens, Botanic Gardens and Changi Museum. To continue this conservation effort and in recognition of its heritage, CAG’s management and staff have planted saplings of the Changi tree in the airport grounds as part of the ‘Changi Goes Green’ programme. The trees will serve as a symbol of CAG’s commitment to environmental sustainability into the future.

The first Todai Restaurant opened in Santa Monica in 1985. By 1997, ten Todai Restaurants were in business in major Southern California cities such as Glendale, Orange, Woodland Hills, and Studio City. Recognizing the potential for growth and the viability of a International seafood & sushi buffet business concept, several investors formed Todai Franchising, LLC in 1997 and began franchising the concept. In 1998, TFL was restructured under the new leadership of Mr. Hans Kim as CEO. Under his leadership, the Company opened the first company-owned store in San Jose, CA in 1998 and the first overseas store in Hong Kong in 2002. In 2006, TFL assigned its intellectual property as well as franchisor rights to Todai SSB, Inc. Todai SSB, Inc. continues to grow the Todai concept, bringing new Todai Restaurants worldwide, from Beijing, China to Seoul Korea and now Singapore!
