Recently, McDonald’s launched its new corporate mission geared towards the green movement: “McDonald’s strives to provide eco-friendly workplaces and restaurants that reflect our sustainability goals and demonstrate environmental stewardship in the workplace.”
The McDonald’s Restaurant @ Jurong Central Park opened for business on 1 May 2011. It is situated in the Jurong Central Park, a 8-ha regional park in the Jurong West area across from the Boon Lay MRT Station. The park is accessible via the Jurong and Jurong West Park Connectors.
It is the first park in Singapore to have life-sized board-game features (including Snakes and Ladders and Ludo based on the traditional indoor children's board-games). Visitors can enjoy the games outdoors using the dice tower built in the park for game play. Greenery, sculpted terrains and various play equipment are used to create the board-game features.

The park site retains its existing wetland, a habitat for wildlife species and dragonflies, to complement the existing plants at the site and bring visitors closer to nature. The wetland also serves as a habitat for birds and other wildlife species and helps bring nature back to the urban environment.
To blend into the greenery of the Park, the McDonald’s Restaurant in the Park has incorporated an extensive green roof. The entire mushroom-shaped roof is planted with a refreshing carpet of green, helping the McDonald’s Restaurant to be the first to be awarded the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award under the Restaurant Category.
Apart from enhancing aesthetic appearance and helping in assimilation into green surroundings, the greening of the roof helps to protect the rooftop waterproofing as well as the roof skin itself from extreme UV exposure. Ambient temperature is considerably reduced and the interior of the building kept cool, even though its exterior faces the full brunt of the sun. The restaurant is consequently able to save on energy consumption through lower air-conditioning requirements and to, also at the same time, mitigate Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE).

Elmich Green Roof is the system that was selected for the greening of the mushroom-shaped roof of the McDonald’s Restaurant at Jurong Central Park.
VersiDrain® 25P water retention and drainage trays (the principal component of Elmich Green Roof) installed over the mushroom-shaped roof of the restaurant facilitate efficient drainage of excess water and allow water and soluble nutrients stored in the cells to be returned, via evaporation and capillary action, to the planting medium during dry periods. This effectively reduces irrigation frequency and maintains healthy plant growth. The resultant green roof blends seamlessly into the green environment of the Park.
