The much anticipated Fat Cow opened its doors on 20 October 2011 and is set to shake-up the regional dining scene with a concept as unique as its namesake. Fat Cow is a Japanese-inspired meat atelier where the promise of a bespoke dining experience is carried through from the luxurious meat-service to a vintage wine list and signature cocktail collection.
Established by The Big Idea Group following the success of Kinki Restaurant and Bar which set the pace for urban-Japanese dining here, the team is now ready to introduce Fat Cow - a discerning, Japanese-inspired meat atelier which has taken close to a year to conceptualise and launch. While the word “Fat” may have less favourable connotations for some, the team at The Big Idea Group takes a different approach to give the word new meaning. “To us, the word “Fat” stands for luxury and indulgence. This is what we want our guests to experience at Fat Cow. “Fat” is also a play on the word “Fatt” which in Mandarin dialect means prosperity.
From America to Hong Kong and Australia, the owners of Fat Cow have selected some of the best professionals in the field to manage the atelier. Besides a premium selection of beef from leading farms around the world, guests can also choose to enjoy the meats through a variety of Japanese-inspired preparation methods. While the addition of a cocktail room unifies the bespoke Fat Cow service, the attention to detail is also reflected in the private collection of vintage wines and a piped-in compilation of sultry and modern jazz compositions specially commissioned to set the tone for a classy lunch or dinner.
The Fat Cow space spans slightly over 3500sqft, and its design takes a contemporary approach to the Japanese “Wabi-Sabi” concept. Pared down to its barest essence, “Wabi-Sabi” is the art of finding beauty in things modest, simple and humble. This is much like Fat Cow’s goal of encouraging guests to discover the art of beef enjoyment, by adopting basic and minimalistic Japanese cooking techniques that bring out the best of the meat’s natural flavours.
Staying in dialogue with the outlines of the Richard Meier building where the restaurant is located, elements of this “Wabi-Sabi” approach takes a contemporary form throughout the Fat Cow space. From a ceiling of latticework (an ornamental criss-crossed framework) white washed to emphasize a raw finishing, to the walls which are embedded with hand-made ceramic tiles and custom-made menus imprinted on wood, the interior design embodies the abstract idea of aesthetic asymmetry, asperity (roughness or irregularity) and simplicity.
The cuisine at Fat Cow is one that mixes Japanese-inspired gastronomy with ingredients and flavours not typically used in Japanese cuisine. The culinary team at Fat Cow is focused on the highest-grade beef sourced directly from respectable producers in Japan, America and Australia.
The menu at Fat Cow is divided into three sections. Starting with the entrées, the menu offers highlights such as the House-made Silken Crab Kegani Tofu ($25), Japanese Baked Potato with Caviar (Sevruga - $35++, Oscietra - $42++ or Beluga - $68++), Wagyu Ox Tendon with Foie Gras ($29++), which takes two days to prepare, and crunchy Heart of Palm Salad with a Citrusy Sesame Dressing ($18++). A seasonal menu that showcases the freshest produce available in the marketplace will also be available from week to week.
The main event at Fat Cow begins with the diner selecting their preferred weight, choice and cuts of beef. The culinary team and service staff are fully knowledgeable on the characteristics of the various meats available; Japanese Beef Grade A3 (good marbling with a subtle sweetness, suitable for char grilling; $80++/100g), the richer Japanese Beef Grade A5 (higher percentage of marbling, luxurious on the palate; $95++/100g) to the Australian Beef Grade MS 8+ from either Stockyard Ranch ($52++/100g) or Blackmore Ranch (similar marbling to A3 grade with a meatier texture; $85++/100g).
For guests who are in the mood for seafood, there is also the Alaskan King Crab ($30++/100g) and a selection of seasonal fish (market price) available daily. Other available signatures on the seafood section include the Lobster and Truffle Chawanmushi ($58++) and Charred Lobster with Egg and Soy ($65++/half portion, $120++/full portion).
After selecting the mains, there are four preparation methods which diners can choose from. The “Shabu Shabu” sees thinly sliced beef or seafood briefly immersed in a gently simmering broth while the “Sukiyaki” sees a more robust broth being used for cooking. “Charcoal-grill” is a great way for the meat to achieve a distinct smoked crust while retaining all its juices inside and the “Teppan” is a flash searing technique. After meat and preparation method selection, the chef will portion the beef, season it lightly, and present it to guests to ensure everything is to their satisfaction before they proceed with the cooking.
On the desserts section, the House-made Warabi Mochi ($18++) is a must try. Other highlights include the Kabocha Soy Soup ($18++), which is served warm and the air-flown seasonal Japanese Fruits (market price).
The Fat Cow cocktail room features a list of creative muddles specially designed to complement the cuisine. With home-prepared liqueur and cordial brews, this attention to detail and basic ingredients is synonymous with the Fat Cow’s philosophy of providing guests with the freshest ingredients of the best quality in order to ensure consistency in taste.
The current cocktail menu is made up of close to 20 signature Fat Cow cocktails which will change according to seasonality of the ingredients. Signature cocktails include the Hot Buttered Ume ($25++) served with a rose butter cube, Kyoho Flip ($25++), Shiso Gimlet ($28++) and the Midnight Sencha ($25++). The more adventurous can opt for the Dealer’s Choice – based on the guest’s preferred flavours, the crew will prepare a one-of-a-kind cocktail to complement the meal.
The Fat Cow wine list offers close to 100 expert selections, featuring different grape varietals from regions such as Australia, Italy, France, Argentina, New Zealand, America, Spain and Chile. Prices on the list range from $90++ to $400++ per bottle. A private “Sommelier’s Collection” of vintage wines dating back from 1960s is available only through pre-order with the restaurant’s Wine Sommelier.

Dr Oliver Hennedige is a principal partner in a group dental practice. While he undertakes all aspects of dentistry, he developed a special interest in orthodontics and implant dentistry. Oliver Dental Surgery P/L Minidental Implant Centre has now opened a larger space at Camden Medical Centre.
In orthodontics, he utilizes extensively orthodontic implants, corticotomy and surgically assisted orthodontics for suitable cases. His interest in mini dental implants began 7 years ago when he found out that certain aspects of dental treatment could not be adequately addressed without the use of implants. As conventional implants had some significant drawbacks, he was attracted to the mini dental implants.
He did extensive work from lower denture stabilization to the construction of crowns and bridges with mini dental implants. He gave courses, workshops and lectures on mini dental implants in several countries including Singapore, Myanmar, Philippines, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia. He has written some articles and a handbook on the effective utilization of mini dental implants.
Imagine this: You visit your dentist at 9:30am, let him help you with a mini implant procedure that requires less than two hours, then you go out and meet your friends for lunch. You find that you can eat comfortably, have a great conversation, laugh and talk with confidence. You also recall that it was a painless procedure, hardly any surgery and the price was so affordable.
This is all too good to be true, you say. But, it is true. And it’s been happening to thousands of ordinary folks who decided to give the procedure a shot. They have all benefited from the application of mini dental implants (MDI), whether for long-term support of structures such as crowns and bridges, or to stabilize dentures, especially loose lower dentures.
The idea of minis took root some 20 years ago, when a New York dentist Dr Victor I. Sendax conceived and designed it. That was in the midst of a significant advancement in dentistry when people were given the chance to obtain a replacement of lost teeth by conventional implant therapy. However, such therapy required 3 to 6 months procedures, which involved cutting and drilling into the jaw bone, stitching of the gum tissue, and reopening for further surgical treatment.
Enter the idea of an ultra-small implant screw that is not only acceptable by the human body, but also requires no bone surgery or opening of gums, and is practically painless to insert! The rest, as they say, is history. Today, the Mini Drive Lock (MDL) System of mini implants from USA has the stamp of approval by Food & Drug Administration (FDA) of America for securing loose dentures and fixing crowns and bridges for long term use.
The Mini Drive Lock (MDL) implants are remarkably small, with standard diameters of 2.0mm to 3.0mm only, and cast from titanium alloy. Imagine the size of tiny screws but considerably stronger. Your dentist would initially give you a local anaesthetic, just as he would do for fillings or extractions. Then, without the need to cut your gums or bone, he would screw the implant into your jaw bone through your gums. And he can do all this without you experiencing any pain!
What’s more, the whole treatment is very affordable since it does not require multiple stages of surgery. You also spend less “harrowing” time on the dentist’s chair. Little wonder the mini implant system is such a success. Since its launch in the US, the system has countless people, both young and old, smiling confidently in Europe, Australia, America, Asia and other parts of the world.
Here in Singapore, minis since its first introduction about 7 years ago, has also brought smiles back to many, including patients who are medically compromised and for whom conventional implants were unsuitable. In close consultation with a physician, patients with controlled diabetes, osteoporosis and those on blood thinning medication can enjoy the benefits of minis. Parkinson’s disease patients with dental problems, too, can have minis to help them chew and look better.
Minis, especially Mini Drive Lock (MDL) brand is an innovative system for crowns, bridges and the stabilizing of loose dentures. It can solve your problem, painlessly and at really affordable cost.

A*Star's Institute of Medical Biology (IMB) & Olympus Singapore have established a microscopy suite in IMB to study human diseases such as cancer at the nano-level. Nanoscopy platforms allow scientists to study human diseases, develop effective drugs and new diagnostic tools and therapies.
This suite, equipped with state-of-the-art microscopes with nano-imaging capabilities, will allow scientists to see individual proteins inside a living cell, which is not possible with conventional microscopy. This collaboration with Olympus Singapore will lay the foundation for IMB to develop a comprehensive nanoscopy2 platform, which is the first in the world for biomedical research.
Scientists at IMB will be able to use the advanced microscopes in the IMB-Olympus Microscopy Suite to study molecular interactions in living biological systems; study human diseases, including cancer, aging, neurodegeneration and pathogenesis, at nanometer-range resolution; develop effective drugs at a much faster rate; and develop new diagnostic tools and therapies.
The use of nano-imaging technologies to study living biological samples is an emerging field in modern biology. Nano-imaging (nanoscopy) techniques have so far been mostly limited to use in materials science and chemistry research, to analyze non-living samples such as the characterization of miniature photonic crystals found in solar cells, because the techniques required are so harsh that living cells cannot survive them.
IMB is one of the Biomedical Sciences Institutes of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). It was formed in 2007, the 7th and youngest of the BMRC Research Institutes, with a mission to study mechanisms of human disease in order to discover new and effective therapeutic strategies for improved quality of life.
IMB hosts 20 research teams of international excellence in stem cells, genetic diseases, cancer and skin and epithelial biology, and works closely with clinical collaborators to target the challenging interface between basic science and clinical medicine. Its growing portfolio of strategic research topics is targeted at translational research on the mechanisms of human diseases, with a cell-to-tissue emphasis that can help identify new therapeutic strategies for disease amelioration, cure and eradication.

The ageing facade and dated interior of Singapore's Chinatown Point are set to undergo a $75 million makeover. The makeover will be carried out in phases and will give the building a modern Chinese-themed ambience when it is completed by June 2013. Perennial Real Estate has acquired a large portion of Chinatown Point as part of a consortium and it is intended that this could represent one of the most major upgradings of the development.
When the building was 1st built 20 years ago, there was no MRT but now that the train lines come to the doorstep of this building there is a lot of untapped potential for this project. Chinese elements, such as paper fan and chopstick-inspired designs, will blend with high-tech plasma screens and advertising panels on the mall's exterior facade. The revitalized site is expected to house trades closely associated with the Chinatown area and feature travel agencies, traditional goldsmiths and jewelers, Chinese food and delicacies, Chinese medical halls, Chinese arts and crafts, and electronics.
The improvement works will also see the mall's basement connecting directly to the subway station. Chinatown Point is a 25-story commercial development comprising an 18-storey office block and two 6-storey retail podiums. Podium A houses a variety of shops and restaurants, while Podium B, also known as the Singapore Handicraft Center, houses a treasure trove of handicraft shops. The renovation will see the mall's net lettable area increase by 18 per cent to 205,000 sq ft.
Jurong General Hospital is part of Jurong Health Services. Slated to open in 2014, the 700-bed acute hospital will be twinned with a 280-bed community hospital to provide patients with holistic and integrated care. Conveniently located within walking distance from the Jurong East MRT and Jurong East Bus Interchange, Jurong General Hospital will be collaborating closely with other healthcare partners including primary care providers such as General Practitioners and polyclinics, hospitals, long term care providers and voluntary welfare organisations.
The Hospital Planning Department: Hospital Planning is a unique department set up specifically to oversee and coordinate the design and construction of our new regional hospital, Jurong General Hospital, that caters to fast medicine. Working closely with the end users (doctors, nurses, allied health and administrators from the hospital), Hospital Planning will be the key driver working in close collaboration with the Architects and Medical Planners to plan and design our new hospital building.
A design competition held in mid 2009 saw many exciting entries from local and international architects. The competition was a platform to select the best building consultant/architect as the main Consultant and we were on the lookout for an organisation which understands the complexity of a healthcare building with sensitivity to the needs of a patient. CPG Consultants, HOK (USA) and Studio 505 (Australia) submitted the winning design, which incorporated features like:
A window for every patient - to improve lighting, ventilation and external views for the patient.
Healing environment - to incorporate natural and outdoor views through the window next to every bed. This would create a calming and restful environment which would help in the healing process of the patient.
Sense of connection with the Community - integrated community space within the hospital with the facilities and parks nearby.
They have since conducted many workshops with the architects to revise the design specifications as well as the general massing of the buildings. In the planning of these features the vision of the hospital remains as the focal point:
The Patient is their focus - Patients will be treated with respect, dignity and compassion. We will treat our staff likewise so that they can be expected to extend the same care towards our patients. Patient care will be integrated and holistic - The whole continuum of patient care will be coordinated and integrated, within the hospital and across the healthcare continuum (with Academic Medical Clusters, other hospitals and across step-down and primary care settings). Their focus would be on the "individual" within the patient; not just body parts or symptoms.
The hospital as a conducive innovation and research milieu - Staff are engaged in inquiry and research to continuously enhance medical care and patient experience. They will partner others to bring experimental clinical innovations for patient's benefits. A rich training ground for the next generation of healthcare providers. Ensure a systematic and integrated curriculum for medical and healthcare professionals.
A commitment to build a healthcare institution for generations to come.
NTU will set up a new medical school, jointly managed by London's Imperial College, which is ranked among the top three medical schools in Britain and among the world's top five in a disused conservation building adjacent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Singapore’s new medical school, which will admit its first 50 students in 2013, will produce a different breed of doctors from the two other schools here.
NTU President Su Guaning said its graduates will be trained to tap cutting-edge technology such as robotics to treat patients. The school will not only train the best clinicians, but will also be at the forefront of innovating medical devices and improving health care, he added. NTU Provost Bertil Andersson said the school plans to also recruit 'top-notch' teachers from here and around the world, and that the curriculum will include classes on business, so students will know the nuts and bolts of managing health-care costs.
Straight A's alone will not be enough to get into Singapore's third medical school to be set up by the NTU and Imperial College London. It will also require its students to be team players, relate well to people and have solid communication skills. Imperial College officials want to produce doctors who will not only have sound medical knowledge, but also the 'humanity' to give patient-centred care. Students will be exposed to patients from their first year and deal with them in various health - care settings, including hospitals, polyclinics and nursing homes. Student doctors will also be trained to lead teams and be comfortable with technology.
