The new all-suite wing of the Mövenpick Heritage Hotel Sentosa was once a barrack base that housed British artillerymen during World War II. Now it has been meticulously restored to offer you a sense of history that’s been fully updated with every contemporary comfort.
The three-storey Heritage Wing now features 62 sumptuous suites and an all-day restaurant. During restoration by Singapore’s DP Architects, the wing’s atmospheric original features such as colonial doors, window frames, high-ceilings, wide covered "link way" corridors and other architectural details were fully renovated to their former glory.
The building’s colonial ambience was also enhanced by contemporary flourishes. For example, a 4.8-metre Y-shaped table crafted from a single piece of Indonesian teak has become a design focal point in the WOW whiskey bar in addition to full granite table tops and oversized "kerosene lamp" chandeliers.
Taking inspiration from Singapore’s culture and tropical climate, the designers incorporated atmospheric fans (as well as air- conditioning), floor-to-ceiling windows, slate bathroom floors, patchwork carpets, natural wood finishes and local design motifs.
You will be able to enjoy the majestic view of the commanding Merlion statue from your room, a reminder of Singapore's magical history and traditions, or a tranquil pool view from the room.
Dedicated butlers are assigned to all heritage suites to provide the ultimate standard of luxury and comfort. Those requiring private meeting space can also request for a complimentary meeting room for up to 2 hours. You are also invited to the elite lounge where breakfast, evening cocktails and coffee, tea and snacks are served throughout the day.
Oasia Downtown, designed by WOHA, sets out to create an alternative imagery for commercial high-rise developments. It combines innovative ways to intensify land use with a tropical approach that showcases a perforated, permeable, furry, verdant tower of green in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District.
In programmatic response to the client’s brief of having distinct Soho, Hotel & Club rooms, WOHA adopted a club sandwich approach by creating a series of different strata, each with its own sky garden. Introducing layers of elevated ground levels allow the precious but limited ground floor space to be multiplied, creating generous public areas for recreation and social interaction throughout the high-rise.
Sited within a densely built up area, the tower carves out its own internal spaces and dynamic views instead of relying on external vistas for visual interest. Each sky garden is treated as an urban scale verandah, sheltered at high level by the preceding sky garden and open sided for formal and visual transparency. The openness also allows wind to pass through the building for good cross-ventilation. Large scale High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fans are incorporated as kinetic sculptures that complement the sky garden design and ensure thermal comfort. In this way the public areas become functional, comfortable tropical spaces with greenery, natural light and fresh air instead of enclosed, internalized air conditioned spaces.
Landscaping is used extensively as an architectural surface treatment and forms a major part of the development’s material palette both internally and externally, achieving an overall Green Plot Ratio of 750%. The building form is softened by a living green façade of creepers and flowering plants, creating an alternative image distinct from the surrounding glassy towers of the CBD, one that is tropical, urbanistically sensitive and humanistic.

A private family residence designed by K2LD Architects, situated on a uniquely shaped triangular plot, the Winged House frames the site with two prominent forms: the trapeziums. These forms open towards the main view at the back of the site where 3 existing majestic palms are, and of lush greenery. These embracing forms carve out and frame a middle garden for friendly and private gatherings.
In response to the tropical climate context, the formal exploration took a turn from cutting openings from a pure trapezoid form to separating roof from form. The form draws from the understanding of traditional Malay architecture where the house itself is climatically responsive to bring you comfort. The form of the traditional Malay house is reinterpreted into folding trapeziums whilst keeping its climatic purpose of bringing in fresh air into its interior space. Elements such as the extended overhanging eaves and the double pitched roof are adopted into the form. The extended overhanging eaves are manifested in the form of extensive roof overhangs for the naturally ventilated spaces, which are enjoyed with much shelter and shade even during the seasonal heavy rain downpours.
The traditional double pitched roof is translated into the separation and staggering of the roof form. This split of the roof achieved a play of light and shadows into the interior space. Spaces such as the double volume dining room, the 2nd storey passageway and the large patio are all celebrated with the overlapping split roof and its light play. This slot is further enhanced at night with concealed light fittings illuminating the split. The staggered roof form also creates for the possibility of the penetration of natural ventilation into the living spaces.
Materiality is key to strengthening the relationship of the two winged forms, its space in-between and roof on roof. In the intermediate space between two forms is the main entrance foyer and living room which is flanked with two feature natural split granite walls, contrasting its heavy presence with the lightness of the roofs and vertical timber lines of the house. Timber is extensively used throughout the house, choosing a lighter species of timber (Burmese Teak) for the underside of the roofs versus the darker wood (Chengai) as the infill medium (ie: the sun-shading screens) to create a play of depth of the façade. The vertical timber screens not only help in providing shade from the harsh sun, but it helps blend the house with the lush vertical tree trunks of the surrounding greenery.

Latte e Miele, which means "milk and honey" in Italian, was inspired by the biblical paradise "Land of Milk and Honey" where there is abundant sustenance, joy and happiness. Stepping into Latte e Miele will evoke a feeling of goodness and pleasure as you leave the parched office landscape, dusty roads and chaotic traffic behind to enter an oasis of gelato and other tasty treats.
Their gelato is made every morning at their shop with 100% natural ingredients and no added preservatives. Each flavour is strictly handcrafted in small quantities to ensure the freshness and quality of it. Rather than using the commercialised pre-mixes commonly used in many gelaterias, they choose to stick with traditional Italian recipes and methods, which involve a careful balancing of sugars, cream, fresh milk (and sometimes eggs) to achieve that perfect smoothness in texture and exquisitely intense flavour. The moderate use of cream in gelato also results in its having less than half the fat content of regular ice cream.
Enjoy fresh artisan gelato at your parties, with their portable gelato display cabinets specially imported from Italy for this purpose. You can have your own ice-cream stand for your wedding, birthday or other special events.
Topos Design Studio gave a home on Mt. Sinai Road a protective wing-shaped screen made of bamboo that seems to soar over the neighborhood. A material experiment, the screen is made entirely out of bamboo without the assistance of manmade components such as steel, an impressive feat that mitigates the need for vertical columns.
Most contemporary designers restrict their use of bamboo to cosmetic finishes, Topos has used it as a structural component as well. The wing that tops the green renovation promotes natural ventilation, provides privacy, supports the infusion of natural light and creates a barrier against excess solar gain. But it also establishes an open plan that exists without any kind of vertical columns.
Combined, these design strategies help to reduce the overall carbon footprint as less air-conditioning is needed to cool down the house during muggy summers. Deep eaves contribute to the sense of expansiveness, all of the materials were sourced sustainably, and water in open spaces creates a fundamental link to the natural environment.
Topos studio's projects are unique in their characteristics and distinctiveness. Every design addressed the reactive environment by creating a distinctive aesthetic envelope that unifies the juxtaposing elements. They create architecture and interior designs that challenge the imagination, tap into hidden desires and heighten aspirations within the partial conceptual element.

An exciting new bar and bistro concept is opening soon. From early morning to late night, the Marché Bar and Bistro Raffles City will be pampering guests with fresh delicacies around the clock.
Marché, the originator of “front cooking“, is one of the three concepts from Marché International, one of the leading gastronomy companies specializing in high quality dining restaurants at highly frequented locations.
When it comes to display cooking you will get the feeling you are eating in a market. They prepare their meals right in front of you and provide an informal, comfortable atmosphere. Freshness and Quality are key.
A particular highlight for Raffles City's new bar and bistro is the Slim Grill. Staying true to the Marché fresh and healthy front cooking concept, the Slim Grill cooking method uses very thin slices of quality meat items or seafood cooked on a flat plate in front of you. Fresh vegetables are pan fried on the Slim Grill separately and placed on a freshly toasted Focaccia, then topped with the meat or seafood items.
Situated next to hotels and offices, it will be the perfect spot to chill out and recharge the battery in a modern atmosphere.
Chef Tony's Popcorn Co. is one of the best in the history of popcorn and they have recently opened at Marina Square. Its not just popcorn, its gourmet popcorn! Chef Tony's recipes use only the best natural ingredients from the best parts of the world; they use GMO-free corn kernels, real cheeses, chocolates, honey, and whole nuts from the US, Europe and Japan! They use no preservatives, and no artificial flavors, only natural stuff to give you the best-tasting popcorn to enjoy!
At Chef Tony’s Popcorn Co. they are as passionate with Popcorn as Starbucks is with Coffee. They believe that there is no substitute to quality, so they have committed themselves to using only the best ingredients they can find.
Each Chef Tony’s Tub begins with the best and rarest corn kernel found in the United States. Each kernel pops many times its original size to a perfect spherical shape giving each bite a crisp and creamy mouth full. They then season each kernel using a secret 3 stage process which allows all the special ingredients to remain crisp and fresh on each kernel up until the very moment you pop it in your mouth!
When they began Chef Tony's Snack Company in Manila 2006, they wanted nothing more than to please their family and friends by creating a unique snack that contains the best ingredients and flavours. Needless to say, now thousands of others are just as excited about their delicious creations.
The Godfather does not trifle with quality, especially in the creation of the world's finest gelato. Advocating luxurious indulgence, his spirit of perfection drove his men the world over in search of top quality ingredients to craft a gloriously palatable gelato.
Pioneering gelato so unique is not a job for the faint of heart, yet its rewards remain substantial. Having mastered usage of Alfero Gelato's all-natural imported ingredients, the Godfather looks on in satisfaction as you entertain your guests in his humble indoor and outdoor seating quarters.
One philosophy that -18C (read as minus 18 degrees) stands by is to merge palette-teasing frozen yogurt that is made of the finest ingredients together with an assortment of toppings to bring brand new excitements to their customers.
With that, -18C is going to take this experience like no other to a whole new level by targeting to the young audience and to the increasingly health conscious population in Singapore, where studies have shown that yogurt helps improve digestive health and a stronger immune system.
Dedicated to the vision, customers can be treated to unique concocted flavours as well as classic favorites; all at a reasonable price.
Quality and freshness is guaranteed with -18C as the ingredients will be the finest selected from Europe and Australia. With that it also promises that 100% natural ingredients will be used (No Gluten, No Artificial Sweeteners, No Artificial Flavouring, No Preservatives).
The process of freezing the yogurt does not kill off any significant amount of the cultures packed, so instead it goes into a dormant state. And when it is consumed (warm temperature within the body), these cultures then become active again to provide the consumer with all of the well-known health benefits.
The extensive menu will include more that 20 unique flavours together with classic favourites. In addition, over 20 toppings will be available for customers, of which, 80% of them will be daily-cut fresh fruits, not forgetting other assortments such as chocolates and nuts. Spin off products will include freshly squeezed fruit juices and yogurt drinks. This is to provide an alternative to customers who may not be too receptive to frozen yogurt.
This concept will identity itself with the 13-25 target audience age group, where they will most likely drawn to the branding of this shop that revolves around healthy living and pure unrefined pleasure. The interiors will be furnished with a modern and yet cozy décor. Counter servers with a friendly and bubbly charisma will be chosen, as it will liven up the atmosphere for customers.
-18C aims to make itself the healthy escapade, where entertainment can be healthy at an affordable price.
The Experimental Power Grid Centre (EPGC), one of the largest experimental power grid facilities in the world opened this month. Located on Jurong Island, the S$38 million venture is the Agency for Science, Technology and Research's (A*STAR) centre for energy research.
The facility is set to open the way for cutting-edge research to develop future energy technologies which can be eventually commercialised.
At the opening, a collaboration was inked with the HDB to improve integration of renewable energy into housing estates. What they will try to do is look at all kinds of energy they can harvest - be it wind, solar or battery. And they will see how we can optimise this in the grid. EPGC also signed MOUs with two international companies - National Instruments and Meidensha Corporation Japan.
The collaboration with US-based National Instruments will involve the development of advanced measurement and control technologies for smart grids. Meidensha, one of the leaders in Japan's heavy electric industry, is looking to develop high-efficiency control technology for advanced medium voltage inverters, used in industrial pumps and fans.
EPGC also entered a research collaboration agreement with SP PowerGrid. The facility will allow for novel energy technologies to be experimented in a safe environment - before taking them "live" to real electrical networks.
Second feature is the renewable energy sources. Sun is not in your control; wind is not in your control; how are you going to estimate how much solar energy? If it changes suddenly, what is the impact on the grid? So in order to do research and to do a controlled experiment you need to try out these scenarios. The emulators can help you programme.
The centre has a capacity of one megawatt, which is enough to power 500 households. It is also designed to be customisable, so various power networks can be configured.
Vision: To lead in ushering new technologies for intelligent and decentralised power distribution, interconnection and utilisation.
Mission:
To undertake research and development (R&D) in core areas for intelligent and decentralised power distribution, interconnection and utilisation.
To carry out collaborative R&D with A*STAR Research Institutes, Universities, Industry and Public Agencies.

And if you are not sure what your skin type is, ask the pharmacist to do a computerised skin analysis for you. You can also get your skincare medications dispensed here.

Singapore's only natural history museum, the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research (RMBR) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has received its latest philanthropic gift of S$25 million from the Lee Foundation. This latest gift enables the RMBR to embark on building a new purpose-designed building for its invaluable collection of animals and plants specimens. To be renamed the 'Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum', the new building will showcase Southeast Asian biodiversity and environmental issues in an exhibition hall that will be 10 times the size of the current gallery.
The new museum will also be home to the existing collection of 500,000 specimens of mammals, birds, amphibians and other invertebrates. This is the oldest natural history collection of animals in Singapore, including some century-old artefacts and extinct animals. It is also one of the largest collections of Southeast Asian animals in the region and is the second oldest natural history collection in Southeast Asia after Indonesia's Bogor Museum.
The University believes strongly in the national significance of this project and has provided the museum with a larger and highly strategic site on their Kent Ridge campus. The new Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, which is expected to be ready by 2014, will be located adjacent to the NUS University Cultural Centre along Kent Ridge Crescent. When ready, the natural history museum would, with its neighbours the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, the NUS Centre for the Arts and the NUS Museum, be part of a heritage and cultural hub at Kent Ridge.
The RMBR embarked on a fundraising campaign in late 2009 to build a new natural history museum for Singapore after an overwhelming response to an International Museum Day Open House held in May 2009. The open house attracted more than 3,000 visitors, which severely stretched the museum's physical and manpower resources. An unnamed donor, responding to media reports, came forward with a pledge of S$10 million to support the fundraising project. The latest philanthropic donation by the Lee Foundation and with donations from other donors brings the total funds raised to S$46 million.
The funds raised to date will be used for the development of the new natural history museum building. The RMBR Fundraising Committee will soon embark on the next phase of its fundraising efforts to equip the new museum with high-quality new exhibits for the galleries. The RMBR team also hopes to develop a strong public programme.
The RMBR at NUS is the custodian of one of the earliest natural history collections in Southeast Asia. The 160-year-old collection was inherited from the then Raffles Museum and Library at Stamford Road in the 1970s, after the museum was renamed the National Museum and refocused its attention on the arts and history. Over the past 40 years, the collection has grown to more than 566,000 specimens.
In recent years, environmental issues such as climate change and global warming have captured the world's attention. There is increased awareness of the importance of biodiversity as an economic and scientific resource, and how human activities such as the overharvesting of species, introduction of alien species and habitat destruction have caused dramatic losses in biodiversity. The RMBR provides vital scientific expertise in aiding the research that may one day find solutions to these problems.
Public support for the museum and its collections and research has grown tremendously over the years. With the resources bestowed by the benefactors, the new museum hopes to provide larger and more comprehensive exhibition galleries, display even more specimens of historical and scientific significance, and include modern interactive exhibits to further enhance its role in reaching out and engaging the public.
Funds are still needed to make this museum a reality. A website has been launched to accept donations from the public. Your gift will help to create a museum that we all can be proud of! You can donate online, by cheque or call to make donations in cash or other gifts.

Mt. Sapola was named after the mountain where natural soap was first discovered by the ancient Romans. The Romans were the first to discover soap at the bottom of this mountain when a clay-like substance of fat trickled down the mountain into the river through raindrops. This produced a foaming substance that made their clothes cleaner – the precursor to modern-day soap.
With this, Mt Sapola produced the first batch of their natural handmade soap in 1997. Today, production has expanded to a wide-range of naturopathic spa products to support its global network of retail stores in Europe (Paris, Geneva, Milan, Venice, Italy), Australia, America (Cananda) and Asia (China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam and Singapore).
Mt Sapola uses only the finest natural botanical ingredients and pure essential oils. No form of petrochemicals, or unnecessary synthetics or fragrance is used. Mt Sapola products make use of Rice Bran Oil as its core ingredient because if its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The oil is extracted from a unique strain of rice – Oryza Sativa, which contains three natural Vitamin-Es, in the form of Tocopherol, Toctrienol and Oryzanol. These Vitamin-Es provide a natural moisturizing, anti-oxidant with sun screen protection which doesn’t clog pores and is ideal for our Asian skin type in our tropical weather.
Mt Sapola believes in humanity! Their products are never tested on animals and contain no animal-based ingredients.

Jet Concepts was conceptualised by a group of certified skin professionals who had personal interests in managing skin problems that come naturally with age. Comes the quest to find the best dermatological ingredients to concoct the perfect formula for the entire Jet product range.
Besides their revolutionary products, Jet Concepts uses aesthetics treatment equipment that employs state-of-the-art technology that gives you almost immediate results! Their mission is to provide effective products and results oriented treatments & therapies at affordable prices so you can finally renew, rejuvenate and rejoice with youthful, radiant skin!
If there were a word concise enough to describe Jet Concepts, it would be this: revolutionary.
Before Jet Concepts, skin-care products and services were either ineffective (with a cheap price tag), or expensively effective. Singapore has successfully established a niche in the market for promoting itself to the world's ultrarich as a discreet place to park cash. Ever since the Swiss authorities lifted the veil of banking secrecy to expose European Union tax dodgers Singapore has positioned itself as a primary locations for the storage of multi-million dollar collectibles here too. The Singapore FreePort, a super-secure, state-of-the-art facility that operates in its own duty-free zone next to Singapore's Changi Airport has recently opened. The largest such facility in the world, it provides wealthy collectors with tax-free storage, as well as a place to display and sell their art.
The Singapore FreePort, with its 24-7 access and capacity for everything from art and jewelry to vintage cars and fine wine and cigars. Designed by Swiss architects, Swiss engineers and Swiss security experts, the 270,000-square-foot facility is part bunker, part gallery and exudes style and sophistication. The lobby, showrooms and furniture were designed by contemporary designers Ron Arad and Johanna Grawunder. Private rooms and vaults, barricaded by seven-ton doors, line the corridors. Near the lobby, private galleries give collectors a chance to view or show potential buyers their art under museum-quality spotlights. A planned second phase will double the size of the facility to 538,000 square feet.
Collectors are picked up by FreePort staff at their plane and chauffeur driven by limousine, any time of day or night, to the facility. If the client is carrying valuables, an armed escort will be provided. Clients who go through a one-time registration process with Singapore immigration can thereafter get accelerated entry through Changi Airport's CIP luxury terminal before heading by limo to the FreePort.
Natural Le Coultre, the largest art-storage and logistics operator at the Geneva Free Port, holds a majority stake, and Mr. Vandenborre a minority stake, in the FreePort's management company; the National Arts Council and the National Heritage Board each holds a 5% stake. A group of private shareholders owns a company that owns the facility itself.
Christie's Fine Art Storage Services has opened a 64,500-square- foot facility inside the FreePort, making it the first and largest service provider there. Other tenants include Natural Le Coultre and Helutrans, which provides similar art-storage and logistics services, and companies that provide specialty services such as wine storage and jewelry and precious-metal transport.
