A larger patient waiting area that also accommodates the various needs of their patients.

|
| |
| |
|
| |

A dedicated medication dispensing area which moves the dispensing process away from the reception counter. This ensures a focused and private system of dispensing medication.
Additional consultation and treatment rooms enabling more doctors to be available, and reducing any delays experienced by patients.
Their naturally lit consultation rooms provide a more comfortable environment for their patients.

The Chinese New Year will bring about a new chapter for Dover Park Hospice when it expands its services and facilities at a cost of $2.5 million. The three-storey building at 10 Jalan Tan Tock Seng will have 10 more beds in four single rooms and three two-bed rooms, raising its bed capacity from the current 40.
Further expansion is not possible at the current site because of space constraints. The hospice is also hiring another six nurses to add to the current staff strength of 21 nurses, four doctors, a medical social worker, a counsellor, eight care employees and a part-time music therapist. Preparations for the new beds are underway, and the foreign nurses who occupied dormitories on the top floor are moving out.

The dormitory space will be turned into offices, which are now on the lower floors. The space on the lower floors will, in turn, be used for the new beds. A multi-purpose room and another one for prayers will also be refurbished to create more single rooms for patients. The walls will be repainted from the current white and orange to something more soothing. The hospice's expansion will be a small boost to the palliative care sector, which serves about 1,200 inpatients a year, according to the Health Ministry.
Dover Park Hospice opened in September 1995 with 40 beds. It has an annual operating cost of $4 million, of which 35 per cent is paid for by government subsidies, half by fund-raising events and donations and 15 per cent from patients' fees. Patients pay $210 per day, of which $160 can be drawn from Medisave. About a third of the patients are fully subsidised.

Two new nursing homes will be built in housing estates in the heartland, while four existing ones will be relocated to upgraded premises in such areas. This is part of a scheme announced yesterday which aims to change the face of nursing home care in Singapore by building bigger homes and increasing the number of beds.
Staff will have their skills upgraded and homes will be encouraged to gradually reduce their reliance on foreign workers. The five-year government-funded scheme, which will cost up to $120 million, was announced by Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan, who is also an MP for Sembawang GRC.

Four existing homes are to be moved to bigger premises to better cater for the needs of the population, particularly the elderly who have shifted location over time. Singapore Christian Home For The Aged (SCHA) will move to Sembawang Crescent, Bright Hill Evergreen Home will be relocated to Punggol, Villa Francis Home For The Aged will go to Yishun and Ren Ci Nursing Home to Bukit Batok.
Two new nursing homes will be built in Buangkok and Jurong West. The minister said relocating the homes would make it more convenient for the patients and make it easier for family members to visit them. There are currently 63 nursing homes and 9,300 nursing home beds in Singapore. The Ministry of Health (MOH) hopes to increase this to 14,000 by 2020, with 1,600 coming from the six new and upgraded nursing homes announced yesterday.

NTU will set up a new medical school, jointly managed by London's Imperial College, which is ranked among the top three medical schools in Britain and among the world's top five in a disused conservation building adjacent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Singapore’s new medical school, which will admit its first 50 students in 2013, will produce a different breed of doctors from the two other schools here.
NTU President Su Guaning said its graduates will be trained to tap cutting-edge technology such as robotics to treat patients. The school will not only train the best clinicians, but will also be at the forefront of innovating medical devices and improving health care, he added. NTU Provost Bertil Andersson said the school plans to also recruit 'top-notch' teachers from here and around the world, and that the curriculum will include classes on business, so students will know the nuts and bolts of managing health-care costs.

Straight A's alone will not be enough to get into Singapore's third medical school to be set up by the NTU and Imperial College London. It will also require its students to be team players, relate well to people and have solid communication skills. Imperial College officials want to produce doctors who will not only have sound medical knowledge, but also the 'humanity' to give patient-centred care. Students will be exposed to patients from their first year and deal with them in various health - care settings, including hospitals, polyclinics and nursing homes. Student doctors will also be trained to lead teams and be comfortable with technology.
