Alfred Chan – the heart and hands behind Drips Bakery Café - touted as a gourmet pastry chef of the Heartlands, Alfred Chan has a sweet deal going for him.
Alfred opened his charming little shop in Commonwealth two years ago, selling scrumptious tarts and cakes of unique flavours. Although he spent his professional years behind baking counters at the Shangri-la Hotel and other famous academies, he liked the laid back charm of a heartlands neighbourhood and particularly its friendly patrons who visit him at his shop. Alfred soaks up this lively environment and thrives in it and the steady stream of customers is evident of its success.
Some customers have even become his friends and shared their own recipes with him, encouraging him to innovate, improve and create new flavours and ideas. Some simply want to spend time trying new cakes or pastries which Alfred whips up every so often. The current shop comfortably accommodates the retail business, but it gets harder to seat and serve his lingering patrons. So as a result of its growing popularity, Alfred decided to set up a bakery café, where customers can comfortably sample his fare.
Alfred wants to be able to share his cakes and desserts with a wider appreciative audience. He enjoys getting feedback and trying new things. In the newly opened shop, the menu offering is extensive and customers will feel spoilt for choice. From cakes, tarts, cookies, freshly baked breads and sandwiches, it’s a one-stop shop for people who like a good dessert on its own, or with their meals.
They don’t want to offer just one type of food – food should be enjoyed as complementary dishes to one another. People should not feel that they have to settle for just one type of dessert – there are many choices here, so do your best to try as many of possible.

The new Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa Resort scheduled to open in early 2011 has a lot of new exciting things to offer, but the brand new Island Rosa Spa should definitely be one to try. Guests of the hotel and stressed out city workers can take a well-deserved break by pampering themselves through the varied range of spa treatments or lounge in the free-form pool, complete with Jacuzzis. Surrounded by wild life and the ocean this spa will make you feel relaxed and revived.
Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort is the only resort in Singapore with a beachfront location on Sentosa Island overlooking the South China Sea. Situated on Siloso Beach, the resort aims to be the destination of choice for both business and leisure travellers. It enjoys proximity to mainland Singapore, which is conveniently linked by a causeway. Besides numerous island attractions and VivoCity - one of the largest shopping malls in Singapore - the resort is minutes away from Southeast Asia's first Universal Studios.
After 17 years in business, the resort is currently undergoing a complete makeover on its guestrooms and facilities including the swimming pool, gym, spa, children's club, food and beverage outlets and function rooms. The resort will categorize its rooms according to the view - hill, pool and sea - and each room will have a balcony so that guests can enjoy the lush natural surroundings. New room types will better cater to the needs of different groups of travelers. For instance, a guest traveling with children can check into a Deluxe Family Pool View Room with child-friendly facilities and extra luggage space, while a couple on their honeymoon can check into a Panorama Room with an open concept bathroom that offers a panoramic sea view.
Other enhancements to the guestrooms include soundproof double walls and a space-saving extra bed that folds into a wall. To provide guests with greater convenience, a guest pantry will be available on selected floors to provide additional amenities, such as an ice dispenser and a vending machine for snacks. Premium rooms will be located on the 10th and 11th floors, which require key card access.
The project is targeted for completion in early 2011, after which Rasa Sentosa Resort, Singapore will re-open as Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort.
