The design for this Malaysian-Singaporean joint venture actively engages the space of the surrounding city to form a new civic nucleus in Singapore’s modern metropolis. The two towers are not conceived as autonomous objects, but defined by the spaces they create around them.
The design for DUO subtracts circular carvings from the allowable building volumes in a series of concave movements that generate urban spaces, a kind of "urban poché" that co-opts adjacent buildings and symbiotically inscribes the two towers into their context.
By generating the massing through a subtractive process, the elevations of the new towers are reduced to slender profiles. Vertical facades rise skywards along the adjoining roads, while a net-like hexagonal pattern of sunshades reinforces the dynamic concave shapes. The duo of tower volumes is further sculpted to feature a series of cantilevers and setbacks that evoke choreographed kinetic movements of the building silhouettes.
The buildings dematerialize as they reach the ground to provide a porous permeable landscape traversing the site. Leisure zones and gardens act as a connector between multiple transport hubs and establish a flow of tropical greenery and lively commercial activity, accessible to the public 24 hours a day. A plaza, carved into the center of the towers and integrating the neighboring building as part of its perimeter, forms a new public nexus between the historic district of Kampong Glam and the extension of the city’s commercial corridor.
Multiple levels of vertical connectivity give access to large elevated terraces for the hotel and residents, a public observation deck and a sky restaurant atop the office/hotel tower, while establishing a direct connection to the adjacent underground MRT subway station. Vehicular traffic is lifted off the ground to allow an uninterrupted pedestrian circulation. Extensive landscape areas at the ground levels, elevated terraces and roofscapes provide accessible green space equal to 100% of the site area.
Construction is scheduled to start in 2013, with completion pencilled in for 2017.

Naumi Hoel is the Naumi Hotels Group's flagship. A brand synonymous with personal luxury and prime locality.
A private family residence designed by K2LD Architects, situated on a uniquely shaped triangular plot, the Winged House frames the site with two prominent forms: the trapeziums. These forms open towards the main view at the back of the site where 3 existing majestic palms are, and of lush greenery. These embracing forms carve out and frame a middle garden for friendly and private gatherings.
In response to the tropical climate context, the formal exploration took a turn from cutting openings from a pure trapezoid form to separating roof from form. The form draws from the understanding of traditional Malay architecture where the house itself is climatically responsive to bring you comfort. The form of the traditional Malay house is reinterpreted into folding trapeziums whilst keeping its climatic purpose of bringing in fresh air into its interior space. Elements such as the extended overhanging eaves and the double pitched roof are adopted into the form. The extended overhanging eaves are manifested in the form of extensive roof overhangs for the naturally ventilated spaces, which are enjoyed with much shelter and shade even during the seasonal heavy rain downpours.
The traditional double pitched roof is translated into the separation and staggering of the roof form. This split of the roof achieved a play of light and shadows into the interior space. Spaces such as the double volume dining room, the 2nd storey passageway and the large patio are all celebrated with the overlapping split roof and its light play. This slot is further enhanced at night with concealed light fittings illuminating the split. The staggered roof form also creates for the possibility of the penetration of natural ventilation into the living spaces.
Materiality is key to strengthening the relationship of the two winged forms, its space in-between and roof on roof. In the intermediate space between two forms is the main entrance foyer and living room which is flanked with two feature natural split granite walls, contrasting its heavy presence with the lightness of the roofs and vertical timber lines of the house. Timber is extensively used throughout the house, choosing a lighter species of timber (Burmese Teak) for the underside of the roofs versus the darker wood (Chengai) as the infill medium (ie: the sun-shading screens) to create a play of depth of the façade. The vertical timber screens not only help in providing shade from the harsh sun, but it helps blend the house with the lush vertical tree trunks of the surrounding greenery.

Many successful Japanese ramen restaurants have established their new branches in other countries and introduced their original products to ramen markets abroad. Recently, Marutama Ra-men, which serves authentic Japanese ramen has been making its Toripaitan soup as the new wave in the Japanese Ramen industry following Shoyu, Miso, Shio and Tonkotsu soup.
Marutama's Toripatan soup is served with homemade Hakata-styled ramen noodles. What makes this soup so special and mouth-watering is the 100% pure chicken broth made with absolutely no MSG at all! As for Toripaitan soup, it is one of the most difficult soups to prepare and cook. This is because the taste of Toripaitan soup is susceptible to the change in color and taste and the chef must have the experience to identify the ideal balance in order to make the soup. In every Marutama store they spend at least 5 hours daily on the cooking process and preparation alone. This pure milky white chicken-based soup has delighted and won-over hundreds of thousands of ramen lovers' across Asia.
Marutama offers an authentic Japanese ramen experience with its half-boiled aji tamago and aosa seaweed topping, complete with melt-in-your-mouth char siew. This additional topping of a half boiled seasoned egg is highly recommended for ramen. In Japan, Marutama's half-boiled seasoned egg was recognized as "the best tamago". Its unique texture: fully boiled at the surface and only half boiled inside blends in perfectly with the seasoning.
Marutama is well-known as a restaurant which has developed their shops not only in Ryogoku, Tokyo and Kawaguchi, Saitama, but also in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand since the first Marutama restaurant in 2001. Senai-Desaru Expressway Berhad is soon to chalk up a milestone success in the engineering, operation and maintenance of a large infrastructure project of the 77km long Senai-Pasir Gudang-Desaru Expressway Project (“E22”) in the southern state of Johor, Malaysia. The expressway project is also the third longest highway concession awarded by the Malaysian Government and it has just opened to the public cutting travel time between Singapore and Desaru dramatically.
The works for this project involves the engineering and construction of 6 interchanges, 1 intersection, 4 toll plazas, 2 Rest & Service Areas and also the landmark bridge across Sg Johor. The expressway alignment traverses through Senai, Ulu Tiram, Layang Reservoir, Pasir Gudang and Penawar/Desaru. E22 will be the main connector from the east to the west of Johor.
Travelling time will be shortened from a 2hr journey to a 45minutes journey from Senai (west) to Desaru (east). Previously, the Federal Route FR3 & FR92 was the only gateway to Desaru, with a typical journey of 2hrs.
The E22 has 2 Rest & Service Areas located at KM31 on the west bound and KM32 on the east bound. The facilities include food court, fruit stalls, surau, toilets, wakaf, information centre, ATMs, WIFI, playgrounds and petrol station.
E22 traverses through the environmentally sensitive water catchment area of Layang Reservoir. E22 is the only expressway in Malaysia which features the Pollutant Removal System (PRS). E22 took one step higher by introducing the PRS to monitor and controll any potential impact to the water quality in Layang Reservoir in the event of a spillage of dangerous and hazardous chemicals from any vehicle travelling on the expressway.
Another special landmark for E22 is the Single Stayed Bridge over Sungai Johor. Travelling between southwest and southeast Johor will be faster and more comfortable with the opening of the 75km Senai-Desaru Expressway today.
The highway, costing RM1.4 billion, is one of the biggest infrastructure projects under the Ninth Malaysian Plan in Johor. It provides an important transportation link to further boost the logistics and tourism sectors in the southern region. With the highway, travel time is about an hour between Desaru, in the south-east, and the Second Link or Tanjung Pelepas, in the south-west.
This is a stark contrast compared with the 21/2 hours of travelling along the trunk road. In conjunction with the opening of the new highway, codenamed SDE, motorists will enjoy a toll-free journey for one month from today.

Set literally next door to wild rocket at Mount Emily, Wild Oats is housed in a charming colonial mansion amidst a sprawling garden.
For those who prefer cool air-conditioned comfort, the indoor area has classic black leather armchairs and designer bar stools. Outdoors, the chenai wooden deck with nostalgic rattan chairs is the perfect place to sip champagne and indulge in star gazing amidst the lush tropical greenery.
Being in the Bras Basah-Bugis district which is set to be the arts, culture, and entertainment hub in the city center, Wild Oats shares the premises with Emily Hill – a multi-talented and multi disciplinary group of creative people including an art gallery (MonsoonAsia Gallery), a glass artist (Ms. Tan Sock Fong), a theatre school (Theatre Training & Research Program) and renowned sculptor Mr. Sun Yu-li.
Although wild oats has a wide selection of drinks – easy drinking wine from both old and new world, local and international beers (including Hoegarden and Stella Artois) and classic/original cocktails, the most popular drinks are the Lambrini (a slightly sparkling perry from the UK), Emily Royale (wild oats' original champagne cocktail made with strawberry puree & crème de casis) and G.H. Mumm Champagne.
A small but delectable selection of finger food is also available. A Greek favorite, the feta and spinach pie is given a local twist and made into Feta Tofu & Spinach Wantons at wild oats. There are also the very popular Parmesan Wings, only the mid-section is used (because that's the best part!), deep fried to a golden crust and drizzled with your choice of homemade chicken-rice style super spicy chili sauce or a creamy gorgonzola sauce. If you want something more substantial, try one of the Hot Bitches (more politely known as Hot Dogs elsewhere), each one with different toppings including chili con carne & sautéed onions.
Steve Madden is easily America's most successful shoe designer. Considered the fashion footwear mogul of the 21st century, Madden has been responsible for the design and marketing of the company's trendsetting shoes for the past two decades. His vision to give young, fashion forward women a unique way to express their individuality through style resulted in millions of customers worldwide and propelled his designs to the forefront of the fashion industry.
In 1990, with a mere $1,100 in his bank account, Madden started crafting shoe designs from his Queens-based factory and the Steve Madden brand was born. With sheer guts, years of experience in the footwear industry, and unique creative designs, Steve Madden formed his own successful enterprise.
A year later, Madden introduced a redefined version of platform shoes, resulting in one of the most spectacular success stories in the early 1990's. Inspired by his favorite rock and roll stars of the 1970s, the thick, chunky heel became Steve Madden's signature and a phenomenon in women's shoes.
Madden's footwear vision is continuously evolving. Steve once said, "What inspires me is what I see people wearing on the streets of the world from New York to London and beyond. I get my ideas and inspiration from pounding the pavement all over the world. Today, fashion is dictated by individual style. To me, the fashion of the future is anything that a young guy or girl feels good wearing as long as it's put together in the right way."
Today, the Steve Madden brand represents a lifestyle. It is about embracing fashion while still maintaining that funky independence that first defined the brand 20 years ago. Expanding now into apparel and other accessories such as dresses, handbags, belts, sunwear, cold weather, outerwear and hosiery, Steve Madden is always looking toward to the future. As 2011 begins, more exciting opportunities are on the horizon including re-packaging, new store design rollout and expansion in global markets.
The latest jaw-dropping Spring/Summer collection for this revered shoe label has just arrived at its incredible new store at Marina Bay Sands.

Built in 1933, Clifford Pier was a landing point for immigrants and other sea passengers. The Landing Point derives its name as it signifies the long passage way the early settlers took upon setting foot at the pier.
Elegantly positioned alongside an impressive 6-metre wide indoor promenade paved in bespoke marble mosaics, The Landing Point is The Fullerton Bay Hotel’s lounge du jour. Aptly named after its significance in Singapore’s history as the location where immigrants and other passengers first arrived in the city-state by sea in the early 1900s, The Landing Point is designed by Asia’s highly sought-after design wunderkind Andre Fu.
In hues of aqua green, mineral silver and plum with opulent soft furnishings and subtle lighting, The Landing Point features a 13-metre long bar, a spacious waterfront outdoor terrace and a chic indoor lounge area. The décor harks backs to the colonial era, evoking a charming aura of the old British Concession in a juxtaposition of modernity meets old world charm. As one of the first touch points for guests arriving at The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore, The Landing Point is beautifully dramatic. Guests are greeted by a stunning 7-metre wide multi-faceted ceiling pendant feature, and an array of subtly lit lanterns.
Open for breakfast, lunch and light refreshments throughout the day, The Landing Point serves chic comfort food interpreted through classic dishes, using only the finest and freshest produce. Guests can enjoy a carefully selected variety of salads, delicious sandwiches, local Asian favourites, and desserts.
Afternoon Tea is served daily and presents an array of delightful light bites – Mini Bagels, Finger Sandwiches, Chocolate Éclair, Canele, Tarte Citron, and English Scones with Strawberry Jam and Clotted Cream. The Landing Point’s selection of fresh teas and infusions consists of Honeyed White Tea, Gyokuro Green Tea, Pu-Erh 1998 Vintage Tea, and Lemongrass infusion.
As the sun sets, the tempo at The Landing Point shifts gear, inviting guests to enjoy a sundowner whilst overlooking the sparkling bay. Among a wide range of spirits, cognacs, brandies and whiskies are new and old world wines available by the glass, and a carefully crafted menu of cocktails available exclusively at The Landing Point.
Inspired by the location and history of the venue, “The Clifford Collection” is a range of eight contemporary cocktails that reflect an ingredient-driven philosophy; “The Anderson Collection” consists of eight timeless vintage drinks. The third unique collection named “The Old Fashioned Cocktails” customizes the original 19th century drink with guests’ choice of whiskey, bourbon or rum. These bespoke cocktails are stirred swiftly for exactly 20 seconds and the addition of 2 dashes of artisanal bitters and light citrus oils provide a whisper of sweetness.
The Landing Point is open daily from 7.00am to 12.00am
This has probably been City Harvest Church’s best-kept secret in its 21-year-history. The exact location of the church’s new site has been a hot topic that has kept Christians within and outside the church guessing, since it was confirmed on January 16 that a space had finally been procured after a five-year search.
The revelation of Suntec Singapore International Exhibition and Convention Centre met with great excitement from the church congregation. This location would put all the services of the church under one roof.
It had to be as big as they can go in our small city-state with limited land. Suntec Convention Centre has a total usable area of more than 1 million sq ft—that is 20 times their Jurong West property and 10 times Expo Hall 8. Suntec has the size they need and can accommodate their traffic
They wanted a place that was central and easy to get to by MRT and bus. CHC members come from all over the island. Suntec is centrally located with three major MRT stations nearby: City Hall MRT is a 10-minute walk; Esplanade MRT and Promenade MRT open this April and are even closer by.
A church is not just a main sanctuary and nothing else. Having extra facilities is critical to the operations of the church. They need areas for children, rooms for Bible study, car park space and eating places. Suntec Convention Centre has more than 30 meeting rooms, and we will have access to over 8,680 car park lots in the Suntec-Marina area. Between Suntec City and the Convention Centre, there are 283 stalls/restaurants for our members to eat at, and 622 retail stores for their members to shop in.
Through this agreement, CHC becomes a co-owner of Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre, and has a share in the annual revenues of all its facilities. The two floors CHC will primarily use are the sixth and seventh floors and include the CHC Auditorium which is column-free and can accommodate up to 12,000 seats. Early plans for this space reveal a stadium-style layout with a sizeable play area for children, and 10 meeting rooms. All their morning prayer meetings, seminars and conferences will be held there in the future.
In the event that there are such key events on the same scale as the IMF - World Bank meetings, City Harvest will exercise flexibility and vacate the space for such clients. They are now part-owners so it benefits them too. Although City Harvest will use the space for its services, the building is still a commercial entity, and technically not a “church building”. The church will lease the space to use for their services.
Blending contemporary elegance with understated luxury, Oroton remains one of the most talked about brands in Australian fashion today, complete with innovative collections that are rivalled only by the history of the brand itself.
Founded in 1938, pioneering businessman Boyd Lane rapidly established himself at the forefront of his field importing and wholesaling quality textiles from Europe. Gaining trust and respect from industry peers around the world, manufacturersdelivered a wide variety of products, among them ladies handbag frames from a supplier in Belgium, one of which arrived with a sample material that would eventually play a pivotal part in the future rise of Boyd's company: mesh.
From its best-selling French purse model to the ever-popular brush, comb and mirror sets, whatever the season Oroton consistently remained a retail phenomenon across Australia and became known as the brand with a cult-following. The mesh evening bags were so in-demand the brand was even asked to produce a limited-edition purse especially for the opening of the Sydney Opera House.
With demand for the product at its peak, the time was right for a retail outlet with a difference. Enter the Oroton Showcase which opened its doors at the Centrepoint Gallery Level in Downtown Sydney in March 1973. Today, Oroton has expanded to approximately 50 stores across Australia and New Zealand and is also available through major department stores, international boutiques and www.oroton.com.
Intent on continual growth in Australia and New Zealand as well as international markets, in 1987 the OrotonGroup commenced operating as a public company upon the Australian Stock Exchange. Playing a major role in the brand's decision to further explore product expansion, whilst inadvertently cementing the seductive appeal of the brand and reinstating its focus on affordable luxury, in 2000 Oroton introduced an intimate apparel collection for both men and women.
In addition to jewellery, ties, sunglasses and silk scarves, an assortment of other items were added to the Oroton portfolio including leather accessories, umbrellas, knitwear and shoes. Oroton today is a trusted, quality brand unafraid of delving into design classics and re-interpreting them with a modern twist.

Balaclava – a familiar name in watering hole circles has recently moved into new premises. After a successful decade-long run at Suntec City, Balaclava has now taken up residence at ION, where it is accessed through the fifth-floor carpark rather than the upscale shopping mall.
And that’s exactly how owner Sam Yeo wanted it. The veteran F&B operator, whose five outlets include the 18-year-old Wala-Wala in Holland Village, and more recently, KPO in the lucrative Orchard Road belt, has an eye for interesting locations, and says he wouldn’t have taken up the narrow semi-circular space if it required walking through the mall.
You have to know about the entrance as it is a little bit discreet and it is felt by Sam that being in a multi-storey carpark with views overlooking the Ground Zero of the shopping set (the junction of Orchard and Scotts roads), gives the new Balaclava a distinctive, slightly edgy vibe. It’s the only dedicated bar in ION, so they have a unique offering and they can also cater to the residents in ION’s residential tower.
It’s also an ideal place to have a drink while waiting for the nightly traffic jams around ION to subside. After entering through a push-button black-screen sliding door, patrons are greeted by a bar that has a distinct science fiction look and feel to it. Balaclava is a smart and sophisticated space, with two long bars, seating along a curved wall and different seating zones that – depending on your mood and inclination – will appeal to a wide range of drinkers. There is also an elevated VIP area devoted to drinkers of Blue Label, blended Scotch.
At night, the space is also illuminated by lights from the facade of the ION mall. DJ-style music plays a key role in the venue, and will evoke different moods at various times of the day – the bar is open from 3pm till late. There’s also a small tapas menu with tasty snacks such as spicy prawns ($18), squid tempura ($16), pulled pork tostadas ($15), foie gras burger ($13), and baguette slices with different toppings ($5 per slice or $30 for a seven-piece combo).

Conservation will get a boost in the $50 million makeover for the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. The wetland will get a 38ha park named the Sungei Buloh Wetland Park to help it cope with the rising number of visitors.
It is hoped that the park will attract more casual visitors, leaving the main reserve area for researchers, serious nature lovers and bird watchers. The authorities fear that rising and unregulated visitor numbers may have a negative impact on the reserve's rich biodiversity. The site of the new 38ha park is an extension of the reserve now known as the Kranji Nature Trail.
Under the Master Plan, conservation of the wetland's rich biodiversity will be strengthened, while its outdoor learning and education facilities will be enhanced. In time to come, visitors can look forward to new amenities, programmes and activities to cater to all groups, from students, families, nature lovers to researchers.
A public exhibition on the Master Plan is held at the Visitor Centre from now until 1 August 2010. Go down to Sungei Buloh today to view the exhibits!
