Commissioned by the Housing and Development Board as an exploration of the future of affordable public housing, WOHA‘s public housing design for Skyville @ Dawson consists of 960 new homes. Their project is currently under construction and is estimated to be completed by February 2015. The design focuses on 3 themes – community, variety and sustainability.
There is a variety of community space. Each home is part of a Sky Village: 80 homes which share a naturally ventilated community terrace and garden. The block is composed of 3 villages, stacked 4 high, for a total of 12 villages. Other community areas include: the Community Living Rooms at ground level, which provides seating areas overlooking the park and is located on the main entrance route of the development; the Landscaped Park, which retains enormous historic rain trees and provides two community pavilions, play and fitness areas, courts and lawns; the Rooftop Park, which houses a 400m jogging track and rooftop pavilions which support a PV array that powers the common lighting; the Urban Plaza, located along a public linear park and provides supermarket, coffee shop and retail spaces.
The design gives variety by offering you flexible floor plans with a column free and beam free main space, eliminating waste and allowing diverse lifestyles, such as home office or loft living as well as future flexibility.
SkyVille has been awarded Singapore’s Green Mark Platinum rating, the highest rating possible. PV cells at the rooftop power the common areas and a swale which is a major landscape feature treats storm water before discharging it to the storm water system. The project uses landscaping throughout the tower in the sky villages, additionally it covers 50% of all roof surfaces. Two major landscaped external spaces totaling 1.5Ha are provided.

The design for this Malaysian-Singaporean joint venture actively engages the space of the surrounding city to form a new civic nucleus in Singapore’s modern metropolis. The two towers are not conceived as autonomous objects, but defined by the spaces they create around them.
The design for DUO subtracts circular carvings from the allowable building volumes in a series of concave movements that generate urban spaces, a kind of "urban poché" that co-opts adjacent buildings and symbiotically inscribes the two towers into their context.
By generating the massing through a subtractive process, the elevations of the new towers are reduced to slender profiles. Vertical facades rise skywards along the adjoining roads, while a net-like hexagonal pattern of sunshades reinforces the dynamic concave shapes. The duo of tower volumes is further sculpted to feature a series of cantilevers and setbacks that evoke choreographed kinetic movements of the building silhouettes.
The buildings dematerialize as they reach the ground to provide a porous permeable landscape traversing the site. Leisure zones and gardens act as a connector between multiple transport hubs and establish a flow of tropical greenery and lively commercial activity, accessible to the public 24 hours a day. A plaza, carved into the center of the towers and integrating the neighboring building as part of its perimeter, forms a new public nexus between the historic district of Kampong Glam and the extension of the city’s commercial corridor.
Multiple levels of vertical connectivity give access to large elevated terraces for the hotel and residents, a public observation deck and a sky restaurant atop the office/hotel tower, while establishing a direct connection to the adjacent underground MRT subway station. Vehicular traffic is lifted off the ground to allow an uninterrupted pedestrian circulation. Extensive landscape areas at the ground levels, elevated terraces and roofscapes provide accessible green space equal to 100% of the site area.
Construction is scheduled to start in 2013, with completion pencilled in for 2017.

Eastpak is an American manufacturer of packs, bags, luggage and clothing. It is part of the VF Corporation brand portfolio, which is one of the world's largest apparel companies.
The brand was the first to replace the traditional brown and green bags with fun, flashy colors. This trend was further reinforced in 1987, the year Eastpak well and truly emerged "out of the woods and into the city" for good. For 1987 saw the first appearance of wild, extravagant prints in the catalogue, marking Eastpak's emergence as a genuine, urban lifestyle brand.
This move was matched by the first series of fresh and provocative ads in a range of lifestyle magazines from Rolling Stones on up. The brand had well and truly hit the streets and had finally “talked the walk” as well. By building on the hip, urban explorer image the bags seemed to have already acquired all on their own, it was just a small step to becoming, "the Leader of the Packs”.
Eastpak bag or accessory is designed to let you cram more life and excitement into your day, whether moving across town or across the globe.

Lend Lease unveils the crown jewel of shopping malls in the West of Singapore: Jem. Set to be the "gem" at the heart of the new commercial hub of the West, it will be the region’s mall of choice, seamlessly blending shopping with entertainment, functionality with experience and community culture with Orchard Road inspiration.
With the great retailer partnerships they have secured, they are well-placed to achieve their vision to become the first choice location for shopping and leisure in the West of Singapore. The mall aims to bring the best of Orchard Road to the West with shopping, entertainment, food and leisure all under one roof.
Upon completion in the second quarter of 2013, Jem will be Singapore’s 3rd largest suburban shopping mall with six levels spanning a gross floor area of 818,000 sq ft (76,000 sq m) and housing over 280 retailers. To date, 50% of the retail area has been leased.
Six major anchor tenants have already been secured. Cathay will feature the largest 10 screen cinema multiplex in the West with daily midnight movies. The new retro-chic themed multiplex will boast of eight commercial halls and two Platinum Movie Suites with a total seating capacity of 1,800. This project marks their first venture and sets in motion Cathay Cineplexes’ expansion in the western part of Singapore. With its opening, you can look forward to late-night movie screenings and an extraordinary cinema-going experience of the utmost visual and audio quality for which Cathay Cineplexes is renowned.

Fairprice Xtra will provide everyday grocery shopping with a 70,000 sq ft hypermarket. The new Courts will be a 20,000 sq ft lifestyle store complete with tablet “bars” and Wi-Fi chill zones, while Koufu will provide an 18,000 sq ft food court with a breathtaking sky garden view.
In keeping with the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s decentralisation strategy to provide jobs closer to homes, and business hubs outside the city centre, there will also be an office tower situated above the retail component scheduled for completion in late 2013.
Jem is strategically located adjacent to the transportation hub in Jurong East. There is direct access to the Jurong East MRT station that serves both north-south and east-west train lines. The mall is also exceptionally well connected due to its close proximity to the Jurong East Bus Interchange and has above ground connectivity to neighbouring sites. It is expected to service 1.12 million people (20% of Singapore’s total population) who reside within Jem’s main trade area by 2013.
The Lo & Behold Group re-opens its beloved Loof, Singapore’s first standalone rooftop bar located atop Odeon Towers in downtown CBD. The name Loof is a playful reference to the idiosyncrasies of local speech and culture. Going back to their roots, the new Loof is refreshed but maintains its cheeky and quirky character, but now comes with extra local flavour.
Enjoy carefully crafted Southeast Asian inspired cocktails with bar food that have a local twist. Then take a trip down memory lane and purchase little gems of nostalgia at The Mama Shop. Bask in the cool shade of Loof’s urban garden. Take in the best view of Raffles Hotel.
In the heart of the city, soak up infectious beats from their resident DJs KFC and Tyler Made. Get a weekly dose of ear candy every Thursday at “LOOFAPALOOZA” with DJ Uncle Johnny as he spins tribute indie and alternative beats from the 80s and 90s.
The newest addition to Loof is The Mama Shop. The Singaporean precursor to the modern day convenience store, Mama shops were typically run by Indian Uncles (“Mama” in Tamil). A spin on the traditional, The Mama Shop’s hostess greets customers and sells knick-knacks and treats of yesteryear. Play Five Stones with your friends, crackle some pop rocks, or simply buy kitschy souvenir notebooks and mugs. There’s a little something for everyone, Singaporean, expat, tourist or business traveler.
The cocktail and bar food menus both feature Singaporean elements and lots of local flavour. New Southeast Asian cocktail selections include five distinct drinks that are familiar yet unique.
Bandung Bloom, made with kalamansi juice, vodka, champagne and rose syrup is an updated tuck shop drink that takes you back to those school canteen days. The Singapore Sour plays on salty-sweet with sour plum, kalamansi juice and vodka. All drinks are made with the freshest quality ingredients, including herbs freshly plucked from our own mint, basil, lime and lemongrass plants.
The architects behind the new Loof are Marc Webb and Naoko Takenouchi of Takenouchi Webb. Featured throughout are signature shingle patterned tiles adorning the walls, trellis and backdrop to the bar which brings a quirky, eclectic and playful aesthetic.
Equally dominant is the ample greenery and foliage, a testament to the Group’s organic growth over the past seven years and a nod to Singapore’s tropical flora. The four large trees remain a focal point, now surrounded by creepers, hanging plants, and a green wall, truly making Loof an urban sanctuary.

A new type of gallery has opened in Singapore. Call it nomadic in concept, Artemiss Contemporary takes art to the people by holding exhibitions in unusual places, restaurants, shops, salons, hotels, flats, as well as its own gallery space. They propose a wide variety of original artworks, in limited editions, different styles and at affordable prices.
Popular in Europe, this is the first time the idea of a roving art gallery for European art is being launched in Singapore. Clementine de Forton, the brainchild of gallery owner explains she wants to display the artworks they love in living interiors, that way anybody can see and appreciate the pieces in a friendly environment. They share their passion for amazing European arts, photography, painting, mixed media, sculpture, with the widest group of people possible.
Her partner, Gaetane Prinselaar. thinks of these spaces as a totally different atmosphere to galleries. The buzz of a venue filled with people having a good time lends an extra dimension to artworks. That’s particularly true of their first exhibition, the urban muse, which focuses on the world’s great cities, and the dynamism, drive, humour and trauma of the urban environment. An unexpected encounter with an artwork is like a moment out of time, and that’s exactly the emotion the artists in our exhibition are trying to achieve.
The urban muse comprises several original artworks by four artists: Christian McManus, Christophe Jacrot, Caroline Benech and Joel Odesser. Through photography and mixed media each artist explores the city in surprising and original ways. Shanghai, Hong Kong, New York, Paris, London and many more are re-imagined and embellished, revealing their beauty and diversity.
Clementine de Forton regularly travels to Europe to meet exceptional new artists and select their finest work for exhibition in Asia, often for the first time. As well as the roving shows, Artemiss Contemporary has a collection of work by the artists it represents, which can be seen at its permanent gallery in Singapore by appointment.
As well as exhibiting and selling the artworks, Artemiss Contemporary’s services include leasing, art counseling for interior design projects, creating public artistic events and corporate gifts such as signed art books.

At the heart of Orchard Road lies Paragon, a high-end retail mall that resonates with the luxury niche of Singapore’s consumer market. Home to numerous international luxury brands, it is the destination of choice for both Singapore’s elite and their foreign tourist counterparts.
To accommodate such an exclusive demographic, Paragon’s upmarket tenants favoured an impressive frontage, unwilling to relinquish ground floor exposure for larger spaces on higher floors. Hence, with acute shortage of ground level frontage and to appease their resistance against moving to higher floors, new shop fascias were designed exclusively for each luxury brand, with magnificent Orchard Road frontage on a much grander scale than before.
The plan also dovetailed neatly with the façade enhancement scheme laid down by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) - the governmental urban planning body – that encourages new and unique building facades to enliven the Orchard Road shopping experience. Realising these aims, the existing stone façade was re-clad in layers of aluminium panels and fritted glass to form an elegant backdrop.
Drawing inspiration from the meaning of 'Paragon', the base façade was designed to resemble a multi-faceted diamond. The new façade articulation consequently comprises three main glass cubes, which serve as multi-volume spaces that effectively address the spatial needs of the high-end retailers. In contrast to the angular cubes, a curved glass façade soars forward, drawing all eyes towards the mall’s main entrance; the juxtaposition of the gossamer net against the solid brute stone of the building transforms the entrance into a head-turning focal point that attracts people and entices them into the wonders within.
Not only did the façade articulation presents a creative solution to the spatial conflict, it also maintained its leading position in fashion and luxury, while improving the flow within the urban framework, thereby making the Orchard Road shopping experience infinitely superior.
83 on Club Street is the introduction of an innovative new bar and dining concept.
Urban art, progressive sounds and a kitchen offering an innovative, French-inspired take on food gives 83 an instant cult allure, similar in spirit to places you might find in London or New York.
Just like the food, there is nothing expected about the design concept. Conceived by The Stripe Collective for Deliciae, 83 displays a playful blend of Steampunk and Urban Free Radical influences.
It’s an environment where the visual dialogue is "Jules Verne meets Banksy for a beer and escargot". As with the ever-shifting streets in which Urban Art originated, from month to month 83 will never look the same. Urban artists are invited down to do full wall paste-up's. These gritty, raw and playful works are framed by copper walls, Georgian panelling, leather Victorian chairs and contemporary lines. Not to mention the handcarved lifesize tigers that await you.
83 launches with five giant urban art paste-up’s by Sheryo, Mojoko, Kristal Melson, Speak Cryptic and Eric Foenander; five rising stars of the underground art scene in Singapore. Works by new artists will revolve every 6-8 weeks. Watch this space! High-quality, limited-edition prints are also available from the bar, priced at $83.
Holding true to the statement that ‘it’s better to eat at a bar than drink in a restaurant’, 83 offers a sophisticated drinks and cocktail list, French-inspired bar bites and sharing plates that use only the freshest and highest-quality ingredients.

"There is no such thing as a petite sumo. But no matter what size you are, you can always be big success.” – Chef Kinki
One man turned his shortcomings into victory. From a little respected sumo, Kinki-chan transformed himself into Chef Kinki — the man with mad skills in the kitchen and bar, who had top sumos eating out of his hand.
Inspired by this legend, Kinki Restaurant + Bar is based on the urban ethos of being brave enough to change the game. They’re shaking up the dining scene with an ambiance that defies tradition, modern Japanese dishes peppered with their own touch, and a drink list that features muddles of intoxicating liquids from the East and West.
Kinki is a sweet spot that oozes both local pride and global appeal. They wanted noise, they wanted funk. ‘Zen’ was the last thing on their minds. Drop by and you’ll get an eyeful of a floor mural by tattoo artist Chris Garver of Miami Ink fame. For more urban attitude, one of Singapore’s most respected urban artists ANTZ plastered the DJ console with his graffiti awesomeness. Leave preconceived notions at the door.
Specializing in signature cocktails with Japanese ingredients and inspiration Kinki's rocking rooftop bar has officially opened and its definitely worth a look in.
Launched in January 2011, the IHC architectural design competition attracted a total of 38 submissions out of which four where short-listed to proceed to Phase 2 of the competition. All four short-listed designs were showcased at a public exhibition held at the IHC site from 22-24 April 2011 and the URA Centre from 25-28 April 2011. In addition, the 4 designs were also at the IHC website during the public exhibition period.
From the four short-listed designs, the IHC architectural design competition judging panel selected Robert Greg Shand Architects (in collaboration with URBNarc Pte Ltd) submission as the winning design because it best translated IHC’s stated vision into an iconic, unique and sustainable building that blended both traditional Indian as well as modern architectural elements.
Mr Greg Shand of Robert Greg Shand Architects added "it a privilege to design a building in one of my favorite parts of Singapore. We see the Indian Heritage Centre as a metaphor for the Baoli, an Urban Forum, where the rich diversity of Indian culture is celebrated, nurtured and allowed to grow - a source of enrichment for Little India".
The Indian Heritage Centre will be located at the crossroads of Campbell Lane and Clive Street and scheduled to begin operations by end of 2013.

Volutes is a skyscraper conceived by Asami Takahashi and Jason Lim located in Singapore’s new marina bay area. Their proposal is to pull upwards the urban fabric and create a helical volume.
Public programs are wrapped around a central circulation core while six serpentine structures contain the private spaces. The morphology of the building results from the analysis of 6 control lines sweeping around the central core.
The outer skin is linked to the main structure with spokes arranged in a hexagonal configuration.
Volutes opens at the street level and closes at the top to allow direct sunlight into the city. Its porous skin maximizes ventilation and regulates the green parks and water reservoirs.
This project, conceived by Tan Bing Hui, rethinks the skyscraper beyond its architectural scale by interpreting it as a new urban community. It is located in Singapore’s Marina Bay, where modernization and densification is increasing due its proximity to the Central Business District.
The project analyses and rethinks the properties of Buckminster Fuller’s theory of ‘close-packing’. It is an investigation on the structural and spatial qualities of the octahedron and the tetrahedron. It unveils a possible methodology to aggregate patterns and modules for vertical urbanism.
