World renowned firm Zaha Hadid Architects signature sensuous style is written all over one of its latest projects, a pair of luxurious garden-filled homes called Nassim Villas. Currently under construction on a lot that diagonally faces the Singapore Botanical Gardens, the modern structures are tied seamlessly into the hilly landscape thanks to a series of terraces and ramps. An innovative cantilever adds to the drama of the design by extending the topography into the sky, while also reducing sun exposure at the western façade and doubling as a rooftop terrace.
While curvy and glossy in design, the low-lying villas seem to blend effortlessly into the greenery that surrounds them. Tall tropical hardwood trees flank the estate, allowing it to melt into the plot of land even more. The meandering paths and ramps that connect the spaces dip down to a garage at the lowest level and then up to a peaceful pool and finally to the homes themselves.
The interiors have the same fluid lines that the exteriors do, and have sloped floor to ceiling windows for daylight. Just like the curvy levels outside, some rooms within the home dip down to create nooks for other rooms. Zaha Hadid known for two decades as the visionary of architecture has in the past few years cemented her reputation as the world’s foremost architect and the rare few who are genuinely practicing at the forefront of the architecture advant garde. Her buildings sweep you up and astound you with their fluid theatrics, daring sculptural poise and inventive spatial experience.
In Nassim Villas, Zaha Hadid gives her trademark sensuous and seamless design to lush tropical greenery; and brings her cutting-edge technological explorations to the construction of luxurious living. Flanked by huge luscious tropical hardwood trees on either sides and diagonally facing the Singapore Botanical gardens sits one of the most breathtaking and desirable sites in Singapore. The intention of this design is to mimic the landscape, allow the architecture to be part of it, thereby accentuating the locale and its prominence.
Taking lead from the hilly terrain, a series of deliberate terracing and ramps are employed to usher the landscape into the heart of the villas. The groundscape weaves the site into the building and in doing so, affords an intimate interaction between the garden and the home. The form of the villas is designed to meld with the dynamism of the topography and coalesce into the landscape. Compositionally, there are two adjacent and overlapping volumes in each villa, forming the basis of the division of social and familial programs yet allowing these programs to progress fluently into one another.
With a singular and fluent stroke, a dramatic cantilever extends the topography into the sky; as well as reducing sun exposure at the western façade. The cantilever doubles as a rooftop terrace, wherein one can soak in an elevated and unobstructed view of the botanical gardens. The roof then drapes supplely down on its sides, touching the ground, embracing and sheltering the spaces within.
Maximum frontage to the botanical gardens is designed, resulting in a deliberately public face and a landmark that becomes not just an abode but a showcase for living.
In order to express the fluidity of the design, malleable materials will be used to craft the form and the groundscape. Construction materials for the exterior structure under consideration are Cast Aluminium and Fibre-Reinforced concrete while Fibre-Reinforced Plastic, corian are being proposed for interior elements and glazing.
With only 10 units, Whitley Villas reflects the essence of community living. Here, exclusivity is found in dramatically limited units and genuine friendship is struck in an enclave of like-minded neighbours. The villas exude modern resplendence and a statement which says you have arrived.

After a five-year break from restaurants, Singapore's best-known fusion chef, Jimmy Chok, is back with the 29-seat Bistro Soori. Chok, who has been publishing cookbooks and catering to exclusive dinner parties in the interim, brings three articles of faith to his new project.
The first is slow cooking: at 5 p.m., meat and seafood go into Bistro Soori's ovens to be cooked to perfection in advance of the evening's arrivals. Adding Asian insights to a culinary genre that has long been dominated by Western chefs is the second tenet. "Why do we have Western chefs coming to Asia and discovering lemongrass, and it becomes such a big thing when it's in our backyard all the time?" Chok asks. The third and most important dictate is that Bistro Soori shall serve fusion cuisine of a purist style — in their flavor combinations and nouvelle presentation, dishes like scallop carpaccio with yuzu miso, and rack of lamb with orange hoisin, hark back to fusion's origins in mid-1980s California. To Chok, who has stuck doggedly to the style, even when it fell out of favor in the late 1990s, that's a good thing. Fusion, he says, "is the only way I can describe my food. Don't call it a dirty word. I will be upset."
The 1600 square-foot establishment, conceived by Chef Jimmy Chok and Soo Chan, Principal of SCDA, in a collaboration to celebrate good food with quality design. Jimmy's cooking is like Soo Chan's design manifesto; composed, refined, refreshing and amaranthine. The French cooking techniques employed in Bistro Soori coupled with the Chef's clever Asian interpretation is like a modern gastro-alchemy. Strategically located beneath SCDA Singapore as an extension of the firm's lifestyle arm to complement its multi-award winning practice and also as marketing for the luxurious Alila Villas Soori Bali Resort & Spa. Apart from welcoming diners in search for unique dining experiences, the restaurant offers intimate cooking lessons for aspiring chefs.
Set on the ground level of an art decor shophouse, Bistro Soori pays tribute to its connection with nature and draws inspiration from the region. Lush greenery transits to a crisp poetic interior set with accents of dark timber and neutral coloured upholstery. The bar counter seats offer a good view of Jimmy in action amidst the gleaming Miele kitchen equipment, whlist the large marble communial dining table beneath the sheltered air-well allows natural light and is brilliant for a conference lunch while pouring over architectural drawings.
Chef Jimmy Chok is the Chef of Bistro Soori. The former chef and owner of Salt restaurant is today recognized as one of the most talented young chefs in Singapore. His expertise lies in combining the best of what the east and west have to offer to create dishes that are not only innovative, but also a delight to the eye and palate.
