Ecologically-themed gardens wrap around the residences, including the Papillon Path, Sunbird Walk, Dragonfly Walk and Lotus Creek. This nature corridor culminates at the Butterfly Gate, which links to the great outdoors. The landscape is designed to integrate with the adjacent park and leads to a cycling and jogging trail as well as the Central Catchment Reserve.

True to its green inspiration, the Eco Sanctuary aims to achieve the BCA Greenmark Platinum standard that will not only help you save on utility bills but also promote sustainability. Some of these features include lifts with a sleep mode, rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation with rain sensor and motion sensors.

The striking industrial chic look at Jewel Café + Bar is based on a design of contrasts and is conceptualised by the local cross disciplinary design practice FARM. Envisioning Jewel as a gem amongst the rugged surrounds of timeworn Rangoon Road, FARM decided on a raw shell of cold, bare concrete which is embellished with jewel-inspired details such as glittering crystal light bulbs, warm brass and copper ceiling features, glass doors, teakwood paneling and pristine white subway tiles reminiscent of vintage diners.
| |
| |

The laidback, quirky personality of the café is also evident from the al fresco patio at the front of the café, which is set up with latticed wire chairs in a retro shade of blue and an oversized chalk board that depicts witty cartoon etchings by a local artist.

For the menu, they took an irreverent approach to calorie-counting and go the whole hog to tantalise your taste buds. For instance, the traditional French Onion Soup is duly capped with a comforting baguette crust of Swiss Cheese, Parmesan and Gruyère, which is a great foil for the sweet caramelised onions beneath.

Don’t miss the unique Shio-Koji Octopoke, Jewel’s rendition of the poke, a Hawaiian raw fish salad, that’s given a touch of Japanese glamour. Tender cubes of pan-seared octopus are tossed in shio-koji (a fermented rice-based salt substitute), wasabi and extra virgin olive oil, paired with creamy avocado and shredded ginger flower for extra zing.

The sweet-toothed should leave room for classic desserts such as Homemade Apple Crumble, Tiramisu and Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Bean Ice-Cream. A standout treat is the refreshing Pan-Seared Watermelon Steaks that’s simultaneously warm, sweet, tart and salty.

Commissioned by the Housing and Development Board as an exploration of the future of affordable public housing, WOHA‘s public housing design for Skyville @ Dawson consists of 960 new homes. Their project is currently under construction and is estimated to be completed by February 2015. The design focuses on 3 themes – community, variety and sustainability.
There is a variety of community space. Each home is part of a Sky Village: 80 homes which share a naturally ventilated community terrace and garden. The block is composed of 3 villages, stacked 4 high, for a total of 12 villages. Other community areas include: the Community Living Rooms at ground level, which provides seating areas overlooking the park and is located on the main entrance route of the development; the Landscaped Park, which retains enormous historic rain trees and provides two community pavilions, play and fitness areas, courts and lawns; the Rooftop Park, which houses a 400m jogging track and rooftop pavilions which support a PV array that powers the common lighting; the Urban Plaza, located along a public linear park and provides supermarket, coffee shop and retail spaces.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The design gives variety by offering you flexible floor plans with a column free and beam free main space, eliminating waste and allowing diverse lifestyles, such as home office or loft living as well as future flexibility.
SkyVille has been awarded Singapore’s Green Mark Platinum rating, the highest rating possible. The project uses passive means and avoids the use of energy-intensive solutions rather than using high technology. Every unit is fully naturally ventilated, with every room (including bathrooms and kitchens) having windows. The common areas, lift lobbies and access walkways are all naturally ventilated and lit. The apartments are cross ventilated, with CFD simulations performed at the block and unit level. The units use passive means for comfort – all walls have vertical and horizontal sun breakers to shade both the walls and the windows, all windows have overhangs and special mid-height top hung panels that direct breeze to seating height and allow the windows to remain open during the monsoon period, the units face north and south and have openings on all sides.
PV cells at the rooftop power the common areas and a swale which is a major landscape feature treats storm water before discharging it to the storm water system. The project uses landscaping throughout the tower in the sky villages, additionally it covers 50% of all roof surfaces. Two major landscaped external spaces totaling 1.5Ha are provided.

The greatest luxury of all is simplicity: honest flavours, authentic techniques and ingredients, traditional craftsmanship and the complete absence of gimmickry. This authenticity and commitment to excellence is what sets Italy’s master gelato makers apart.
They use a special tool for stirring gelato that mechanically reproduces the manual technique practised by the Mastri Galatai from the 17th century onwards.

Singapore's first Ice Gallery has opened at Snow City.
Measuring 7.3 by 17.5m, the brand new "Dino World" features more than 20 intricate ice sculptures created by celebrity ice sculptor Jeffrey Ng. A multi-award winning Singaporean ice sculptor who has represented Singapore on the international stage for over 20 years, Jeffrey Ng helmed the creation of Snow City’s ice gallery. He led a team of experienced snow sculptors to create impressive ice sculptures of dinosaurs set against a cascading waterfall.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Creating the ice gallery was a massive feat done over three weeks at sub-zero temperatures, using nearly 500 blocks of ice with each weighing about 130kg.
Snow City is the only permanent indoor snow centre in Singapore. Wholly owned by the Science Centre Board and operated by Snow Venture Pte Ltd, it has a three-storey high and 60m long snow slope for you to snow tube. They also offer unique corporate team-bonding programs and a variety of special events throughout the year. It also serves as a wedding venue for couples looking for a truly white wedding.

| |
| |
| |
| |
Located at the key gateway into the Central Business District and Raffles Place financial hub, the hotel features lush greenery spanning a total of 15,000 square metres of impressive sky gardens, reflecting pools, waterfalls, planter terraces and green walls.
| |
| |

Amongst its other green features are rainwater and natural light harvesting, energy-efficient air conditioning systems, automatic sensors to regulate energy and water usage as well as carbon monoxide levels, along with solar cells to power landscape lighting.

The Pelican’s culinary team is led by Dan Segall. The American chef has built an illustrious international career since he was 16 and chalked up over 20 years of experience at many respected establishments. The Pelican’s Head Chef, Isaac Tan, who successfully launched Bedrock Bar & Grill, also comes onboard with his rich international working experience and expertise with the wood fire grill and seafood.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The space is designed to be an intimate and convivial destination for lunch to post-dinner lounging. The Pelican’s strategic and premium waterfront locale also makes it an unparalleled watering hole for working professionals in the Central Business District to enjoy after-work tipples. Borrowing influences from the glamourous era of luxurious sea travel, The Pelican’s interior boasts an eclectic mix of vintage curios, elegant black-and-white marble-tiled flooring and large copper framed glass doors that look out to the panorama outside. The most striking features are the ceiling and wall panels that are fashioned from gleaming laser-cut copper plates for added luster. Injecting additional playful touches are the specially commissioned oversized acrylic seahorse art pieces in hot pink, as well as exposed tear-drop vintage globes on thin wires that smartly mimic the angler fish and anchor the cushy leather booth seats for groups at the main dining room. The upper deck is shared by several bigger booths and a second DJ console if the party is taken indoors.

At The Pelican, seafood is the order of the day and there are numerous deep-ocean choices to please any discerning palate. A visit to The Pelican is not complete without The Pelican Platter, the restaurant’s headliner that brims with the freshest raw oysters, clams, poached prawns, a whole crab, steamed whole Maine lobster with lobster tomalley that is stuffed into its shell, and marinated conch salad.

Casio has opened the 1st G-Shock concept store in Asia at Plaza Singapura.
A 10 year battery life, 10-bar water resistance and a 10-meter dropping shock resistance. These were the three requirements of the "Triple 10" concept that led to the development of G-Shock's shock resistant structure. The rugged shape and robust styling originated with an engineer's brief calling for an "unbreakable watch".

Pulau Semakau is located to the south of the Singapore. The Semakau Landfill is located on the eastern side of the island, and was created by the amalgamation of Pulau Sakeng (also known as Pulau Seking), and anchored to Pulau Semakau. The Semakau Landfill is Singapore's first offshore landfill and now the only remaining landfill. It was also the first to combine a landfill with a biodiversity conservation zone.
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
The landfill covers a total area of 3.5 square kilometres and has a capacity of 63 million m³. To create the required landfill space, a 7 km perimeter rock bund was built to enclose a part of the sea between Pulau Semakau and Pulau Sakeng. It is currently estimated that the landfill, which began operations on 1 Apr 1999, will last till 2045. The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, along with the National Environment Agency manage the landfill. Up to date it has accumulated 2,330 tones of waste and is expected to be full in about three years.
It's expansion has been undertaken and is expected to end in 2015, adding 160 ha to the existing surface.
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
Semakau Landfill is filled mainly with ash produced by Singapore's four incineration plants, which incinerate the country's waste, shipped there in a covered barge (to prevent the ash from getting blown into the air) every night. The care put into the design and operational work at the landfill ensures that the site is clean, free of smell and scenic. During construction. The landfill is lined with an impermeable membrane, and clay and any leachate produced is processed at a leachate treatment plant. Regular water testing is carried out to ensure the integrity of the impermeable liners.

The much anticipated Punggol Point Park recreational project was officially declared open by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on 20 November 2011. Active residents of the Pasir Ris-Punggol Constituency marked the occasion with their Seniors' Sports Day at the newly minted park. Located next to Punggol jetty, the 0.6ha Punggol Point Park comprises lily ponds, a children's playground, a viewing deck and an events plaza. It is part of the 1.2km Punggol Point Walk.
Just years ago, much of the Punggol Point coastline was inaccessible to the public. Moreover, there was no continuous connection and provision of open spaces along the waterfront for recreational purposes. Avid anglers who visited the coastline during the weekends had to make their way to various fishing spots via other roads within Punggol Town.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Now, visitors can enjoy panoramic sea views on the ship-inspired elevated viewing deck that overlooks the Straits of Johor at Punggol Point Park. City-weary residents can soak in the laidback atmosphere of the coastline or admire the tranquil calm of the giant lily ponds. Children will enjoy kicking back sand at the playground, one of a few on the island with a sand bed. Cyclists and joggers will also enjoy the use of dedicated cycling tracks and footpaths along the waterfront promenade at Punggol Point Walk.
Punggol Point Walk is one of three thematic zones of the scenic 4.9 km-long Punggol Promenade. This 1.2 km waterfront promenade and park, will anchor the planned recreational cluster at Punggol Point. The 1.3 km Riverside Walk, which anchored the growing recreational cluster at Punggol East, was the first thematic zone unveiled to the residents in March this year and is a lively and family-friendly promenade.
Built by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Punggol Promenade will link up the two recreational clusters at Punggol Point and Punggol East. The Promenade is also linked to the park connectors along Punggol Reservoir and Serangoon Reservoir, forming a continuous 17 km loop around the north-eastern part of Singapore. When fully completed, members of the public can walk, jog and cycle all the way from Riverside Walk over at Punggol East to the park at Punggol Point. Next year, the public can also look forward to the completion of the third thematic zone of the Promenade – the 2.5 km Nature Walk.

| |
| |
| |
The $16.7 million Punggol Promenade project is part of the URA's Parks and Waterbodies and Identity Plans to open up the coastal areas and introduce new recreational activities and amenities for the residents to enjoy. Punggol Point was one of the four areas whose rustic coastal charms were recognised, and will be retained and enhanced further. Drawn up and exhibited in 2002, the plan was aimed to introduce new attractions that will not only enhance visitors' experiences but also preserve the unique laid-back and village-like appeal that the areas are well-known for.
Similarly, the design of all the thematic zones in the Punggol Promenade aims to retain, reinforce and enhance the existing rustic environment and natural beauty of the coastline. This latest recreational destination is a collective effort from the project team, leaders and residents from the grassroots and Constituency, the agencies from the public sector and supporters from the private sector. Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd had contributed 1000 trees that were planted along the entire length of Punggol Promenade to increase the shade and greenery along the route.
| |
| |
| |
| |
It is not just greenery that has flourished along the coastline. The very biodiversity of the area has been enhanced with the addition of various leisure destinations in the area. The Lorong Halus Wetland, the two new reservoirs and the Punggol Promenade will provide new nature areas for biodiversity to thrive. Some of the species of plants and wildlife that have appeared in increasing frequency over the past year include eagles, kingfishers and waterhens.
The Punggol Promenade is the latest in a series of improvement projects that the URA has undertaken around the island to enhance the living environment of residents. These include the Southern Ridges, the Woodlands Waterfront and the soon-to-be completed Labrador Nature and Coastal Walk.

Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE), a new S$120 million research centre at NTU, will harness the powers of micro-organisms for environmental and water sustainability.
The centre will look at innovative ways to process waste water efficiently and trapping greenhouse gases through the study of biofilms.
| |
| |
| |
| |
SCELSE already embarked on two flagship programmes in partnership with PUB, Singapore's national water agency, of which one involves analysing water samples from the Ulu Pandan wastewater reclamation plant to find a way to improve the treatment process.
| |
| |
| |
| |
SCELSE is an autonomous Research Centre of Excellence funded by National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore.
A contemporary main challenge is to ensure clean water and a sustainable environment. The biological processes essential for achieving this objective reside with the activities of complex microbial biofilm communities, which turn the wheels of all biogeochemical cycles in both natural and engineered systems.

| |
| |
| |
| |
SCELSE seeks to become a world leader in biofilm research, to manipulate microbial communities and to deliver the capability to harness or control biofilms, wherever required. Ensuring beneficial biofilm actions in, for eg. remedial processes in the environment, potable water production, and preventative health, will bring about significant economic benefits worldwide.
| |
| |
| |
| |
SCELSE aims to explore, understand and manage biofilm-driven processes based on state-of-the-art genomic, molecular and analytical tools and facilitate engineering and bioprocess platforms to translate this knowledge to achieve novel environmental solutions with small environmental footprints.

Integrating Singapore's water bodies into the urban landscape in new and innovative ways is the goal of national water agency PUB. Under its Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) programme, a 1.2 km stretch of Alexandra Canal from Tanglin Road continuing downstream to Delta Road was transformed from a functional concrete canal into a pleasant and attractive waterway with softened banks, seamlessly integrated with the adjacent surroundings. CH2M HILL is the principal consultant involved in the project design and the redeveloped canal was opened earlier this year.
| |
| |
| |
| |
This section of Alexandra Canal starts from an elevated lookout deck at Tanglin Road in which gentle ramps lead down to the new structural deck. A water cascade coming down from the elevated deck flows into a shallow stream which meanders into a water play area. At the end of the water play area is an Educational Hut, showcasing panels about water. The shallow stream then gives way to a set of wetlands which naturally treat water from the canal, and provide opportunities for outdoor classroom learning. This is a tranquil area with simple boardwalks and intermittent resting points so people can get close to water and nature. The water in the wetlands is pumped from the canal and cleansed water at the end of the wetlands will trickle through a rockscape area before flowing back into the canal.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Part of the existing concrete wall of the canal was removed to create a setback for soft planting, transforming the waterway from a functional drain into a modern canal with softer edges and nodes that extend out to adjacent urban developments. A community plaza suitable for community activities was constructed at the downstream of the canal, providing a great lookout point for views of the waterway.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The wetland modules designed for this project are surface flow, floating aquatic vegetation and horizontal sub-surface flow. In addition, rain gardens, vegetated swales and bio-retention swales form sustainable natural elements that attenuate and improve the quality of rainwater runoff. The pilot-scale implementation of these various features are also good demonstration tools to educate the public on the feasibility and effectiveness of treating rainwater where it falls, which should not be overlooked in a densely populated urban city such as Singapore.

Coca-Cola Singapore recently announced the opening of its S$72 million plant in Tuas which will manufacture and supply concentrate to several fast-growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region.
The facility is the first concentrate plant for Coca-Cola in Singapore and one of its largest in Asia, with the capacity to produce 24 million kg of concentrate per annum (equivalent to over 18 billion of 330 ml cans of Coca-Cola).
This is an investment for growth. Asia is one of their fastest growing markets and across the region they see high demand for their wide range of beverages. Locating the plant in Singapore is in line with Coca-Cola’s strategy of being close to their customers. They can have a short lead time to their markets, enabling a flexible supply chain and low carbon footprint.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The plant will create up to 120 jobs and marks another milestone in Coca-Cola’s 75-year presence in Singapore, affirming the company’s commitment to continue to invest in the Republic where it currently has a bottling plant and a regional marketing office, both in Tuas.
In the last five years, Coca-Cola’s Pacific Group, which includes countries in the Asia-Pacific region, delivered compounded annual growth of six percent in unit case volume, above the worldwide average of four percent. The Coca-Cola Company sold 25.5 billion unit cases* in 2010, making it the world’s largest non-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverage company. The Singapore plant was established to support the continued growth of various markets in the Asia-Pacific region and to help support the Company’s vision of doubling daily worldwide servings of Coca-Cola products over the next 10 years.
In keeping with Coca-Cola’s Live Positively environmental goals to “Grow the business, but not the carbon” and reduce its global carbon footprint by 5% by 2015, the plant incorporates many green design elements and has also been certified a Greenmark building by the Building and Construction Authority.
| |
| |
| |
| |
There is high efficiency equipment installed like variable speed drive chillers, air compressors, hand dryers and air handling units that minimise energy usage. Water usage is minimised by using Singapore’s NEWater (high-grade reclaimed water) in the cooling towers and garden irrigation. There is a cold Cleaning in Place (CIP) system for equipment cleaning and sanitation, resulting in reduced energy consumption with no fuel utilization and 60% less water usage. The refrigerants used are fully compliant with ozone protection protocol. Cell form beams used in the warehouse roof cut steel usage up to 25% compared to a normal truss system.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Building the plant in Singapore shortens the time taken to transport the concentrates to nearby markets where they are turned to finished beverages by local bottlers, helping Coca-Cola reach its energy efficiency and climate protection commitments.
Worldwide, The Coca-Cola Company and its partners are investing nearly $30 billion over the next five years to support anticipated growth across its system. These investments range from new manufacturing facilities to new distribution systems to new marketing investments in emerging economies. The Coca-Cola system currently employs more than 700,000 people worldwide, making it one of the world’s top five private employers.
| |
| |
| |
| |
In Singapore, The Coca-Cola Company – including bottling partner Coca-Cola Singapore Beverages and marketing arm, Coca-Cola Far East Limited – employs almost 800 people. The Coca-Cola brand was first available in Singapore in 1936.
The Tuas concentrate plant is operated by Pacific Refreshments Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Coca-Cola Company, and will produce more than 200 different concentrates covering the whole spectrum of brands that are consumed locally in the markets that Coca-Cola serves. These include Coca-Cola, Schweppes, Fanta, Sprite, Heaven & Earth, Powerade and Minute Maid.

Singapore's longest man-made waterway will be open to visitors from October 23. The 4.2 kilometre-long My Waterway@Punggol features five bridges, bringing visitors closer to the water. Punggol waterway was created out of barren land, and connects Punggol Reservoir to Serangoon Reservoir.
| |
| |
| |
| |
But the area has been given a facelift, making it a scenic spot for a slew of leisure activities. Visitors can relive old memories of Punggol along the way, by stopping at this rest stop, which was an old bus stop in the area.
| |
| |
| |
| |
As the waterway is man-made, the challenge for the Housing & Development Board was how to keep the waterway clean and teeming with life. This is done through a series of eco features - such as an eco-drain that cleanses surface run-off water before it is discharged into the waterway.
Aerators have also been installed to enhance the water quality.

The second phase of MacRitchie Reservoir’s S$5 million facelift has been completed. Among its new attractions is a submerged boardwalk that allows visitors to get a little closer to nature. The boardwalk is located near the edge of the reservoir. The plants lining the boardwalk serve more than just beautifying the area. It also has an environmental friendly function.
| |
| |
| |
| |
It has water plants such as the Beach Morning Glory and Pigweed, which help to purify the water in the reservoir by filtering out sediment. There are also dykes and reed beds, which filter out rainwater from the surrounding pavements before they flow into the reservoir. Larger sediments in the water are allowed to settle while the plants on the reed beds absorb the pollutants, so cleaner water flows into the reservoir.
This feature also helps to cleanse the stormwater, using natural systems like the plants and soil to treat the stormwater before it goes back to the main water body. Another environmentally-friendly feature is the new hilltop restaurant. Decked out with a partial glass roof, the restaurant will allow visitors to enjoy not only sunlight in the day, but also dining under the night sky.
| |
| |
| |
| |
MacRitchie’s iconic bandstand and zigzag bridge, which was gazetted as a heritage building in 2009, has also been refurbished. The reservoir has been undergoing renovations since April last year.
The new features are now open to the public.

Innovative ways to process wastewater efficiently and trapping greenhouse gases are just two examples of the many practical benefits which environmental research can bring. Such focused research will be conducted at the Singapore Centre on Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE), which aims to achieve innovative solutions through the study of microbial biofilms – complex communities made up of micro-organisms that are the central mode of life on our planet, essential for all life support processes on earth and the sustainability of our environment.
The centre is led and hosted by Nanyang Technological University (NTU), in partnership with the National University of Singapore (NUS). SCELSE is co-funded by the National Research Foundation and the Ministry of Education over the next 10 years under the Research Centres of Excellence (RCE) Programme. By understanding how bacteria interact with each other in these communities, scientists aim to harness them and control their activities for the benefit of our urban environment and our well-being through innovative life sciences based engineering.
Environmental engineering solutions which are critical to solve the main challenges facing mankind, such as a sustainable environment and the availability of clean water, can at the same time bring significant economic benefits for Singapore and beyond. In Asia alone, the water market is expected to grow to S$600 billion by 2015.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Cities around the world are confronted with increasingly complex challenges related to growing urban populations, providing a clean water supply and proper sanitation, and the provision of high quality environmental services. Singapore, in particular, is a small city-state with limited natural resources. It is therefore critical for us to carefully manage our water resources, as well as to continue to develop in an environmentally sustainable manner. The science and technology that SCELSE promises can meet these complex challenges that a modern society like Singapore faces today. By delivering an advanced understanding of our planet’s key microbial systems, SCELSE’s work will enable greater engineering control of the biological processes encountered in the provision of environment and water services.
SCELSE boasts a world class research group helmed by the foremost authorities and pioneers in environmental life sciences engineering. The centre is led by Director Professor Staffan Kjelleberg and Deputy Director Professor Cohen Yehuda, both top experts in this field. Leading the three research clusters are also foremost authorities in their own domains. Professor Stefan Wuertz is a world leader in the microbial communities in engineered treatment systems and the present editor of Water Research, the top-ranked journal in the field of water resources. Professor Stephan Schuster is a world-famous molecular biologist who had sequenced a mammoth genome using DNA material found in Siberia’s permafrost. Professor Michael Givskov is a pioneer in biofilm model systems and an authority on biofilm biology.

SCELSE also has world-leading scientists on its scientific advisory board, such as Dr J. Craig Venter, most famous for being one of the first to sequence the human genome and for leading the team which created “artificial life”. Locating SCELSE at NTU will further boost their research in environmental engineering as well as in life sciences, especially since they will have a new medical school in 2013. SCELSE announced at its opening that it has already embarked on two flagship programmes in partnership with PUB, Singapore’s national water agency.
The first involves the Ulu Pandan wastewater reclamation plant, where SCELSE has started a comprehensive analysis of the complex microbial communities that treat water at the plant. By knowing exactly what all of those organisms do and how they function together, the reclamation process can be optimised to be faster, more efficient and to use less energy. The second is to study urban waterways, in which SCELSE has adopted the Ulu Pandan Catchment Areas to study the role of microbial processes in the recycling of surface water and for controlling harmful microorganisms in our waters. The findings will help to provide fundamental knowledge useful for reshaping of waterways by the combination of hard and soft engineering approaches.
SCELSE is NTU’s second Research Centre of Excellence, with the first being the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), devoted to studying earth’s natural disasters, which was opened in 2009.

The PAROS Sentosa Cove is designed by Design Collective Architects. In a context where each house tries to out-do the previous with newer technology, materials and exotic finishes, the philosophy of PAROS was to undo all of the above.
PAROS was to provide the break in the monotony of what was becoming of the common streetscape of closely constructed single residential homes.
There was a conscious attempt to create and to hide architecture. The dwelling space was created by means of peeling the earth up and tucking beneath.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The space created would open out towards the back of the plot overlooking the waterfront and close off and disappear along the front driveway.
Only a blank white wall signifies the presence of a building within the place.
The entire roof of the house seems to rise from the earth, taking along what was the original garden with it onto the rooftop. The roof top garden is accessible from the master bedroom.

Besides enhancing water supply, Singapore’s 16th and 17th reservoirs are also set to transform the landscape in northeastern Singapore, bringing waterfront living to the heartlands.
National water agency PUB celebrated this milestone recently. Created by the damming of Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon, the Punggol and Serangoon Reservoirs will collect rainwater from estates and areas within Punggol and Sengkang, and parts of Hougang and Ang Mo Kio. Together with the Marina Reservoir, they increase the water catchment areas from half to two-thirds of Singapore.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Although Singapore receives an abundant amount of rainfall, it has limited land to collect the rainwater. PUB’s strategy has thus been to create estuarine reservoirs by damming the major rivers to collect and store as much of the 2400mm of rain that it gets annually. This led to the creation of unprotected and urbanised catchments in the 1980s, starting with Bedok and Lower Seletar Reservoirs. Today, Singapore has eight reservoirs collecting water from urbanised catchments in the densely populated city areas and residential towns.
Water from local catchments is a pillar of Singapore’s water sustainability strategy, along with imported water, high-grade reclaimed water branded as NEWater, and desalinated water. Collectively, these four sources of water are known as the ‘Four National Taps’, a long-term water supply strategy to ensure a diversified and sustainable water supply for Singapore in the years to come.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Besides enhancing water supply, the Punggol and Serangoon Reservoirs are set to transform the landscape in north-eastern Singapore. Envisioned as a ‘waterfront town of the 21st century’, Punggol Town will soon become a commercial and social hub, with a 4.2-km waterway that connects both reservoirs running through the estate and town centre. Residents can look forward to waterfront living in the heartlands with a myriad of attractive and lifestyle choices lined up along the banks.
Central to this is the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) programme, a long-term blueprint to bring people closer to water through the creation of beautiful and vibrant waterscapes which at the same time provide opportunities for community bonding. Fifteen ABC Waters projects are now open while another three will be ready by the end of this year.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Located right in the midst of Punggol Reservoir, the ABC Waters project -- Sengkang Floating Wetland – links the Anchorvale Community Club to the Sengkang Riverside Park via a bridge on one side, and a boardwalk skimming the water surface on the other. While helping to keep the water clean by natural processes, the wetland also provides a habitat for fish, birds and other wildlife, enhancing the biodiversity there.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Lorong Halus Wetland along Serangoon Reservoir collects and treats water passing through the former landfill, preventing it from flowing into the reservoir. This helps safeguard the quality of water in Serangoon Reservoir. Like the Sengkang Floating Wetland, the Lorong Halus Wetland is developing into a natural habitat for wildlife over time. Members of the public can also go on the nature trails to learn more about wetland, the plants, and various wildlife that thrive there.

Sling Conceptual Dining has officially open its doors to the public. The newest addition to the Shots group, Sling Conceptual Dining is set to provide its patrons with a dining experience unmatched by any other. With head chef Tony Seah at the helm of Sling, the food and dessert on the menu are of European influences, as chef Tony specialises in French and Italian cuisine. Each dish that passes through his kitchen to the dining table is flavourful and complex, yet light in texture.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Not forgetting the sense of sight, chef Tony Seah creates food that is as good to look at, as it is to eat. Each dish is an art piece on its own; the large white china on which the dishes are served provides the blank canvas for him to showcase his artistic aptitude as well as culinary expertise. In keeping with their policy of using only the freshest ingredients, there is no ala carte menu offered at Sling Conceptual Dining; rather, chef Tony creates a new set menu every one or two weeks depending on what ingredients are best at the time.

From beef cheeks to salmon, you never know what gastronomic adventure lies in store for you. Sling can refer to the tools used in hunting food, both from land and sea. With Sling, they want to provide their patrons with food that is made from only the freshest ingredients to ensure only the best quality and best tasting food is served.
Not stopping at providing just quality food, this fine dining restaurant aims to all your senses apart from just taste. As one walks up the flight of wooden stairs to the restaurant, it becomes clear that the concept of Sling Conceptual Dining was inspired by the idea of water. With walls covered in light blue mosaic tiles complimented by lighting that replicates the effect of sunlight hitting water, the space makes one feel as if one is dining in an underwater glasshouse.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Peaceful and tranquil as that may be, however, looking out the large windows of Sling Conceptual Dining, to a panoramic view of the historical and vibrant Club Street, you are quickly reminded that you are in fact sitting on the second floor of a shophouse in the trendy Ann Siang Hill.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Additionally, Sling Conceptual Dining hopes to hold on average a wine pairing dinner every month. They are extending the concept of water not just in the brand and interior aspect, but also in the kitchen where sauces and food are inspired by any kind of water. They already have a jello made with a lifestyle energy drink, and who knows, you may be looking at an Orangina pasta sauce next or even different waters to be paired with your food, taking the experience of drink and food pairing to a whole new level.

Come 2012, Singaporeans will have one more new leisure destination to enjoy along the southern waterfront, with the completion of URA’s Labrador Nature and Coastal Walk. For the first time, the walk will open up currently inaccessible mangrove areas and coastal areas at Bukit Chermin, offering a wonderful mix of hills, mangroves and coastlines all in a day.
The 2.1 km Labrador Nature and Coastal Walk is an extension of URA’s award-winning Southern Ridges, linking from Alexandra Road to the waterfront at Bukit Chermin, bringing together nearby attractions, parks and nature areas along the way. The walk is a new gem in Singapore’s leisure offerings, giving Singaporeans a rare experience with nature away from the bustle of the city.
| |
| |
| |
| |
Imagine strolling or cycling through lush greenery along hilly paths, coming up close to one of the last few remaining mangroves in the south, meandering off for coffee at Gillman Village or visiting the latest attractions at the HortPark, and rejoining the walk again to emerge onto a stunning boardwalk, with breathtaking views on all sides. This is what the URA planners have envisaged, as first shared in the 2002 URA Parks and Waterbodies Plan that sought to enhance Singapore’s green spaces and waterbodies.
Work on this three-part themed Coastal Walk started in July 2010 and is expected to be completed by 2012. The first part - the Alexandra Road Garden Trail, spans the eastern bank of Alexandra Road between Depot Road and Telok Blangah Road. Beyond the footpaths and cycling paths set amidst mature trees and rich landscaping, this stretch will also have an elevated open pavilion that doubles up as a rest shelter and a look-out to scenic views of the Forest Walk within the Southern Ridges and Gillman Village. This Garden Trail also connects to other key attractions in the area like the Alexandra Arch and the HortPark.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The second stretch of the Coastal Walk - the Berlayer Creek Mangrove Trail, allows visitors to experience one of the last few remaining mangrove areas in Singapore and the rich biodiversity of the creek. The Mangrove Trail has been planned with the public transit commuter in mind. Its Entrance Plaza will be integrated with the future Labrador MRT station. The Entrance Plaza will serve as a rest shelter and multi-functional space for exhibitions, talks and other educational activities related to the mangrove area. The roof deck of the plaza, accessible via a ramp, enables visitors to savour an unusual ‘tree-top’ view of the Berlayer Creek. Visitors along the trail will be able to better appreciate the flora and fauna in the area with information storyboards located at key points.
| |
| |
| |
| |
The final stretch of the Coastal Walk - the Bukit Chermin Harbour View Walk, is an elevated boardwalk that brings visitors all the way out to sea. It skirts the foothill of Bukit Chermin, connects to Labrador Park westwards and to the future public promenade at the Reflections at Keppel Bay eastwards. Visitors will be able to pause at various rest points to soak up the beautiful waterfront views of Keppel Harbour and Sentosa, particularly during the sunset hours.
This walk is an addition to the many URA infrastructural projects like the Changi coastal boardwalk and Woodlands waterfront promenade that offer more unique and diverse leisure options for Singaporeans to enjoy. Watch this space for more updates on this new latest leisure playground at the southern waterfront!

The West Zone of the Resorts World at Sentosa, beyond the Marine Life Park, is a landscaped development, quieter and smaller in scale than the central zone. The West Zone will be a more exclusive setting for visitors to Sentosa looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and enjoy the landscape or the beach.
Here one finds the Equarius Hotel, the exclusive ESPA Spa and Spa Village, and the luxury Spa Villas guest quarters. The Equarius hotel, with 360 keys, is located at the edge of the Marine Life Park and very much part of the landscape experience. The adjacent Equarius Water Park abuts the rising terrain of an existing park with its beautiful trails and heritage trees.
Located between the main hotel building and the rising slope of the hillside are two tree house suites, elevated on stilts and featuring rustic wood construction. The rustic architectural character of the Equarius property thus reinforces the experience of its tropical forest setting.

For the traditionalists, Anar is the Persian word for the red pomegranate but in Resorts World also the synonym of an intricate mix of highly aromatic spices, when blended with simple ingredients revealing a fascinating cuisine.

Owners Javier and Sharon have maintained the same style vibe going as they did at the now closed Raw Kitchen Bar, moving from the leafy surroundings of Upper Bukit Timah for the Kallang River. They’ve kept the majority of their mouth-watering signature Japanese/Italian comfort-style dishes which is great news for us regulars!

Mandai Orchid Garden as we know it will be no more as it has to move from its current location. It will be moving to Kranji by the middle of this year
The 60-year old garden is one of the oldest in South East Asia. The 4ha garden has some 50,000 orchid plants comprising over 100 varieties. However, the move will not be as big as the size indicates: because the new site for the garden, just 0.8ha will be able to house only 5,000 of the orchids, a 10th of the collection.

The Garden's Mandai space will make way for the expansion of the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari. And due to land space constraints at the new place, Mandai Gardens has sold some of its plants to the Shangri-La Group and Singapore Botanical Gardens. It has also offered some orchid plants for sale to the Singapore Island Country Club.
Mandai Orchid Garden was started in 1951 by the late John Laycock, a founder of the Orchid Society of Southeast Asia (OSSEA), and continued under him until his death in 1960. He purchased five acres of land on which to grow his ever-increasing collection of orchids. He leased a further five acres of land for commercial cut flower growing, this land and more forms the Mandai Orchid Garden today.

Since 1961, Mandai Orchid Garden has been recognised by the Singapore Tourism Board as a tourist attraction. The Garden is internationally known and attracts up to 200,000 visitors yearly. One of the main highlights of the garden is our showcasing of how orchids were cultivated in the olden days; that is grown on open beds on the ground. A number of plants from John Laycock's original collection are still maintained, though many were lost during World War II.
A wide variety of orchids are displayed in massed beds out in the open. The sloping hillside on which the beds are laid out is a stunning view to behold when the plants are in full bloom.

The attraction of the garden has grown eclectically to include the famous Water Garden, organic herb and spice enclosure, a fruit orchard, and a hydroculture plant tour and propagation garden. We hope that as many of these amazing features can be replicated at the smaller new site in Kranji.

Jo's Creations is a private studio and gallery set up by Joanna Wong, where she can pursue her deep passion for painting. Jo's Creations features Joanna Wong's works and can be viewed by appointment.
Joanna Wong began her journey as an artist in early 2003. Starting off with Chinese brush painting, she found herself drawn to plein-air painting, and has been fortunate enough to have the privilege of being under the tutelage of Ong Kim Seng, one of Singapore's premier artist and Master Watercolourist.

Over the next three years, Joanna Wong attended a succession of painting workshops and classes conducted both by Ong as well as American master watercolourist Stephen Quiller and master oil painter Wee Shoo Leong to further hone her skills with the brush. She has also had the opportunity to pariticipate in three group exhibitions with fellow students of Ong Kim Seng.
Widely travelled, Joanna's works are often about the places she has visited all over the world. Her training with masters in watercolour and oil shows in her impeccable technique, which can be easily identified on the canvas, where every piece of art is rendered in rich detail and lovingly composed to create paintings that immerse the viewer in the scene presented.

Besides her passion for painting, Joanna Wong also found time to follow her other passion of writing, and is the author of illustrated children's book series Squeaky and ten fully illustrated books for early readers.
