Since their very first days in Chicago at 10 West Madison Street, Garrett Popcorn Shops has maintained their dedication to fresh, hot-air popped popcorn. They continue to use only the highest quality ingredients, and Garrett Popcorn Shops never uses fat or oils in the popping process. They know that their popcorn costs more to make, but their CaramelCrisp® and CheeseCorn are worth it. They’re sure you’ll agree....
They start with their privately grown blend of kernels, pop them right before your eyes (guaranteeing freshness!) and then gently fold them into their three generations old, secret family recipe. This commitment to their recipe also extends to their suppliers and their highest quality ingredients. In fact, they are proud of their long-standing relationship with their suppliers - many of whom date back to their first days in Chicago.
For over half a century Garrett Popcorn Shops has focused on fresh, delicious, comfort food. They limit their popcorn based selections to Plain Popcorn, Buttery Popcorn, CaramelCrisp® (which you can choose to be blended with cashews, macadamias or pecans) and CheeseCorn. Their simple menu allows us them focus on what they do best: deliver an honest product that generates lines of historic proportions outside of their retail locations. It’s all part of the fun, part of the mix, part of the tradition ....you never know who you’ll meet in line.
Customer satisfaction remains their highest priority. Twenty years ago they received requests to produce a mix of their CaramelCrisp® and CheeseCorn. Their customers were right - the sweet and salty combination is wildly pleasing. Originally called "The Mix", customers also inspired its new name, "The Chicago Mix," again reflecting their commitment to Chicago and to tradition.
In 2002, Oprah selected "The Chicago Mix" as one of her "Favorite Things" exclaiming, "It is so good! I love when you mix the cheese with the caramel!" Again in 2005 Garrett was selected as one of Oprah’s "Favorite Things" in a holiday show dedicated to the relief workers of Hurricane Katrina.
Garrett Popcorn Shops have always been a family-based company, and today’s management is no different. Their families are much like your families. They lead busy, engaged, and full lives. They value convenience, and they know you do too. To respond to their contemporary fast-paced lives, Garrett Popcorn Shops has made it easier to order their product online. All of their products, including their new gift cards, can be ordered efficiently with a couple of clicks of a mouse.
Visit them online or now you can visit them at a new prime location right outside Liat Towers on Orchard Road.

The second tower of Asia Square, Singapore, will commence construction this year, with the construction contract awarded to Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. (Hyundai E&C). This brings the total value of the construction of Asia Square to over S$1 billion. Hyundai E&C is currently overseeing the ongoing construction works of Asia Square Tower 1 which is scheduled for completion in June.
Designed by Australian architects Denton Corker Marshall, Asia Square is a comprehensive mixed use development of commercial and retail uses, and the first in the Marina Bay area to be fully integrated with a five-star business hotel. Tower 1 is a 43-storey office building with 38 floors devoted to Grade A office space. The first and second floors feature a mix of retail space and food and beverage outlets. Its companion, Asia Square Tower 2, will include 26 levels of Grade A office space. It will also house the luxury Westin hotel from level 32 to 46.
Each tower will provide a highly efficient, column-free floor plate of up to 3520m2 of office space. The development features a fully sheltered 9000m2 public plaza and 6500m2 of retail space. Tower 1 will be completed in June 2011, and Tower 2 is scheduled for completion in 2013. A 300,000m2 development consisting of twin towers rising out of an ‘ice block’ glass podium.
Asia Square is located in Singapore’s Marina Bay, an extension of the existing Central Business District. Marina Bay is an ambitious 360ha urban development project planned as a lifestyle precinct with projects like Asia Square contributing to Singapore’s position as a major business and financial hub in Asia.
Asia Square comprises an integrated mixed use development of office, hotel and retail uses together with a vibrant 9000m2 public plaza located within the glass podium. Urban and built spaces with excellent amenity are being created, which will connect to and reinforce the existing urban fabric of Singapore. Two elegantly articulated tower forms emerge from a simple, orthogonal, pedestrian-scaled podium. Each tower is seemingly composed of a cluster of eight slender shafts that individually rise to varying heights to create a distinctive signature on the Singaporean skyline.
The façade of the two towers comprises glass and metal panelling, granting uninterrupted views from within while producing a striking random patterned effect from outside. At night, lighting will achieve a ‘speckled’ effect. Encapsulating the entire site is the glass podium which, in contrast to the towers, is expressed as a singular, unifying element. It formally fronts the streets on all four faces and is conceived as an ‘ice block’ floating above the ground plane.
Asia Square Tower 1 is a 43-storey office building with 38 floors (94 per cent of floor area) devoted to Grade A office space. The first and second floors will feature a mix of retail space and food and beverage outlets. Its companion, the 46-storey Asia Square Tower 2, comprises 26 office levels surmounted by 15 levels of luxury hotel. Each provides a highly efficient, column-free floor plate of up to 3520m2 of office space, allowing some 450 people to be located on the same floor together with a multitude of private offices, conference areas and private lounges.
Other environmental features and systems incorporated in the design are:
- High performance façade
- Regenerative lifts
- Energy-efficient air-conditioning system which uses chilled water from the government’s District Cooling System - UV emitters incorporated in Air Handling Units (AHUs) to remove harmful airborne micro-organisms
- Energy-efficient lighting
- Motion detectors and photo sensors integrated with lighting control system
- Harvesting of condensate water from AHUs for irrigation of greenery
- Water-efficient fittings
THE Canadian International School (CIS) has unveiled the partner financing its new $140 million campus in Jurong West. It is Singapore-based private education provider Knowledge Universe, which has more than 350,000 students in its institutions worldwide, including 8,500 in its 41 institutions here, which are mostly preschools.
The injection of funds will give Knowledge Universe a majority stake in CIS, the founders of which will continue to manage the school while retaining a significant equity stake. The new campus can accommodate up to 3,300 students when it reaches full capacity in 10 years. Spread over 43,000 sq m, it will have state-of-the-art classrooms, sporting complexes, outdoor play facilities, as well as a performing arts and fine arts centre, an auditorium and a media centre.
Estimated to be completed by November this year, the new campus will consolidate the school's current Toh Tuck, Bukit Tinggi and Kampong Bahru campuses. The school's East Coast campus in Tanjong Katong will remain, as it was recently renovated.
The school, which is not funded by the Canadian government, has 1,900 students across its campuses now. The new campus almost could not materialise, a victim of the global financial crisis. The school ran into difficulties raising funds, and construction stalled in October 2008.
North West District will set up four fitness centres in its district to promote brisk walking, said its Mayor Teo Ho Pin. Dr Teo revealed this at the North West Brisk Walk Challenge recently. Around 7,500 people attempted to brisk walk three kilometres in less than 60 minutes and were joined by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.
North West CDC has been championing brisk walking activity in the District since 1999. Since its inception, the North West Brisk Walking Club has attracted a steady pool of residents to participate in the zonal and district level walks. The brisk walking clubs are formed at the Residents' Committees (RC) and the Neighbourhood Committee (NC). Members include residents of all ages and race from both the heartland and private estates.
The proposed fitness centres aim to encourage residents to brisk walk on a regular basis and to assess their fitness levels.
Two of the fitness centres will be located in the north and two in the south of the district.

This Bistro, operated by the people behind Swiss Butchery in Greenwood avenue, serves burgers, grilled meats and sausages, a meat lovers dream.
Swiss Grill is a cosy little bistro serving up great quality chilled meats from the adjoining Swiss Butchery Shop. Helming the kitchen is Chef Colin West, who has clocked eight years of experience behind the stove. He is an expert at honest-to-goodness fare, preferring to let the fresh, quality ingredients take centrestage rather than wowing with fancy techniques. Everything, from sauces to mash, is handmade every single day by Chef Colin West and the meats here are never frozen. Even the fries are fried to a golden crisp a la minute - no limp salads here either. The thick, juicy burger patties are made purely from premium chuck beef, and only Angus 200-days Grain-Fed Beef is used for the steaks.
